Watching the game on sky Gary Neville kept saying, “Arsenal need to stop letting utd have the ball” and I kept getting wound up and angry, cause it was clear to me Onana was too good on the ball to press and utd were doing nothing with the ball in those areas anyway. Very pleased to hear this in-depth analysis confirming my gut observations. Can we get some actual football analysts on sky please? Great job lads

Gary knows Arsenal we’re doing the right thing. United are literally useless with the ball, he just wants Arsenal to press high and leave gaps in for United to exploit which is how he knows is the only way United win that game. And because he’s a united fan he’s gonna make it look like United know what they’re doing even though he knows they were passing cluelessly and ineffectively round the back waiting for a long ball to rashy

I agree that arsenal's press was not aggressive and quite strategic. They were not oblivious to the threat posed by utd. Multiple times especially during that 1st half, onana and martinez were trying to play it in the half space between white and saliba to feed to rashford, but Arsenal's press was so compact that it allowed their players to be positionally disciplined to recover the ball or utd overhit it.

Again this united performance feels heavily overstated. As JJ mentioned, Arsenal’s first goal was a product of good quick linkup and Ødegaard’s box-crashing. But this box-crashing and good link up also produced two massive chances for Havertz and Saka both of which you would expect to have been converted. One of Arteta’s principles of play is to get Martinelli 1v1, and he did so on countless occasions. Wan Bissaka defended well 1v1 (if you consider conceding a million corners good defending) and the united defenders simply could not compete with the technical level Jesus showed when he came on. This game could have gone Arsenal’s way in many scenarios, a last minute winner is just one of them.

Spot on. There’s a weird onus to find greatness in every United performance, regardless of how poor they are. I feel like Arsenal are in this slightly awkward position where the opposition now recognises them as very good and so up their game against them, but they're not perceived as *so* good that the opposition just basically accepts there's a 90% chance of losing so don't even try anything risky on the counter attack - the 'invincibility' aura that City have. It might come but it'll take time for the new-look midfield to properly integrate first

Nobody is talking about how leaving Rashford to mop up while we are attacking corners has cost us so much this season.. I can count how many times he's been bullied off the ball in counter situations from our own corners, Awoniyi's being the most prominent and yes it also happened yesterday. Rashford is a decently tall boy, has a good jump and can score headers, he should be a target man in the box and not outside it let alone be asked to defend... We got a set piece specialist coach, he has to rearrange a lot of the plays especially defending set pieces.

It's only 4 games in and every team already knows the best way to beat Man Utd. Give Onana or the CBs the ball and stand off a bit and they wont know what to do- Prob end up kicking a bad long ball to Rashford after 50 passes around the back. (All that hype about getting a ball playing GK and scapegoating de gea gone to waste). If they aren't pressing or winning the ball from turnovers then they look lost. - Courtesy of Ten hag's focus on trying to become "the best transition team" Only time will tell if adding Hojlund and Amrabat will change this - Which is quite interesting position to have your season depending on two "unproven" talents

I feel like whilst Arsenal did ultimately deserve to win, United did very well for most of the match and probably could’ve deserved a draw until injuries forced us to bring on Maguire and Evans. Yes the score looks worse for United, but we also got a bit unlucky with the Garnacho offside and aside of the Saka miss we didn’t concede any real high probability chances either. The Rice shot was a bit lucky and it did come after we had to take off our THIRD best centre back, and the third goal happened when United were already forced forward to go for a desperation equaliser. The team clearly has potential, but lack of quality depth and fit starters is the major issue that prevents us from actually playing properly and consistently for 90 minutes.

Therefore Manchester United wouldnt be able to keep up with Newcastle or City, because City and Newcastle actually invest in their training facilites, coaching staff, recruitement staff, stadium etc. United doesnt do that. We don't have the fastest players in transition, just Martinelli and we've mainly been trying to dominate possession and terroritory so don't get as many of those types of chances. Then there's the fact that we've faced the most amount of low blocks since last season and I feel like teams are working doubly hard to either double/triple team our wingers and deny space in the half spaces on the edge of the box, which makes us look more slow and ponderous.

Brilliant analysis as always, gents. Onana is such a gamechanger. If De Gea is back there the Arsenal press would have been WAY more aggressive. I know you focus on the tactics more than the personnel but it should be noted that Arsenal played an almost full-strength side (just missing Timber, really, and Ben White was 1st choice all of last season) meanwhile United were missing Shaw, Mount, Varane and Hojlund didn't start. And STILL they almost won 1-2 at the Emirates with Maguire & Evans (!) finishing the game. Heck of an effort.

Interesting game for the neutral that... could have gone either way. Rashford and Garnacho (who was a gnat's whisker offside) both put it in the net from quick transitions; not really United beating the Arsenal press per se. Arsenal's equaliser was arguably because some United players switched off just after scoring themselves... Erikesen and Fernandes were all over the place as Odegaard (very sweetly) smashed it in. Better team won on the day, but it was close.

What we actually learned: the mighty ten Haag came to park the bus. The entire game was played in and around United’s box. Deplorable for a big team, most would say, but it’s United so it’s tactical brilliance being a Billionaire Burnley. At 2-1 they have to move upfield to try to play football and immediately get another goal in the back. Loses 3-1 with a parked bus but somehow “United were better.” A narrative you won’t see for any other “big” team this season deploying the same tactics.

Amazing analysis. I think United’s setup at corners was too basic. Too easy to counter against. I imagine they’re happy to see lofted corners come in because headers are really difficult to score and have a low Xg. They ran the risk all game that the Rice goal would happen. I’m glad our analysts were able to exploit that further by telling Tomi and big Gabi to force defenders deeper into their area and give Rice even more time and space to receive the deliveries.

Jesus being healthy and back in the starting 11 will be such a boost to our fluidity and build up. he loves the physical battles and dragging center halves out of position to allow the build up space to work in the zone 14. He and Zinchenko were healthy during our dominant run pre WC last year. we get a run with them healthy and starting and this team will look MUCH more fluid thru the middle, especially since no one plays against low blocks more than us, to even City. Let us gel a bit, then you'll see if they can be flexible and creative enough to overcome everyone forcing us wide. Let Saka and Martinelli have 1v1's again on the outside and they won't be putting a foot on the ball or slowing things up as they do facing double or triple teams shifting to them currently.

I think the biggest thing slowing arsenals attacking play down is Nketiah. No disrespect to him, it’s just his skill set is not in facilitating quick movement of the ball in central areas. Several times Arsenal were on the break, Nketiah dropped deep to receive, tried to play a fast ball out to say Havertz or Martinelli, and the pass would be intercepted. They had the same issue last season when Jesus was injured after the World Cup - winning games through individual moments, rather than the system working. The system works when players like Jesus facilitate the play in central areas and drag defenders around, which isn’t Nketiahs natural instinct.

Great analysis of Arsenal's more conservative press! You are also correct that Arsenal struggled to create chances when United got back into their block. However, they did create the very clear cut chance for Saka that he really should have taken (around the 80th minute). I feel like everything else was more or less a wash in chance creation (especially if you leave out the goal Jesus scored after the game state had changed). I was very disappointed that Saka wasn't able to put away the pass from White as that would also have made the offsides less relevant.

IMO, both managers play to not lose the game. full transparency, i'm a united fan. in EtH's case, it was quite obvious in the first half we DO NOT want the ball, we are either passing between the backline with onana getting many touches or just pumping some random ball up without challenging for the 2nd ball. we are trying to absorb arsenal's attack (which i feel we did quite well), hoping for a loose pass and capitalize on the mistake (which happened for the 1st goal). while arsenal seem to be attacking more, they are not pushing players up aggressively, their only outlets were martinelli down the by line and getting corners, which united dealt with relatively well. I felt the plan was to nick the first goal, forcing arsenal to commit more forward and we can play a more expansive football. the plan worked for a full minute. 2nd half was more open but i felt a draw would have been a fair result for either side. both teams would be lucky to win the match, again IMO, as unbaised as i can be.
