Arsenal drew with Tottenham in a fascinating North London derby on Sunday. Both sides shared the points in a game that seen goals from Bukayo Saka, Son Heung-min and an own goal from Cristian Romero.
It was Ange Postecoglou's biggest test yet as Spurs manager, with the Australian coming away with more points than any of Tottenham's previous 3 managers visits to the Emirates Stadium.
But what did we actually learn from the game? JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie discuss.

Could really do with a world class finsher... Osimhen comes to mind. Nketiah doesn't have more in his game. Folarin deserved a chance. Jesus deserves more for his pressing and work-rate alone. One thing I don't see being mentioned is Raya's long balls were losing possession an awful lot. Didn't seem to be working. Then again, given how good Arsenal's high press was, the tactic could be just to give Spurs the ball in their own 3rd, then press.

They’ll try to make this analysis tactical when it’s so abundantly obvious what happened in this game. Arsenal came out on 3 scoops of pre workout and blew their entire load in the first 25 minutes of the match. This led to multiple players getting injured and Arteta outsmarting himself. Arsenal aren’t worse: Declan rice got hurt, and Jorginho made a mistake that cost us the win. That’s literally all that happened. In the last 30 mins (40 with stoppage) both teams were completely spent. No energy left at all. Ben white is the only player for arsenal that can play at that ridiculous pace for the entire game. We went too hard in the first 25 and it cost us and artetas subs were terrible

The fact that the team can't execute the managers plan kind of does raise questions about their quality though. The first prerequisite for professional footballers at the top level is fitness. I thought the result was fair on the balance of play, it's just that Arsenal had a couple of fortunate moments that resulted in goals to balance out unfortunate moments such as the Jesus miss. The only real complaint I have about the game was the fact that Nketiah didnt get sent off because that was one of the most reckless challenges I've seen in the PL for a long time.
@alexprach

I think they probably went with this as they were low on energy after champions league game, but the probelm with Arteta is since he became manager is that he doesn't rotate, I just hope he just starts playing our bench in the smaller competitions else we will run out of pace at the end like last season.
@alexsmith6322
@alexsmith6322 8 ай бұрын
@@mashfnch30I didn’t see it as a game plan thing tho, as in, I don’t think Arteta said “literally go all out and spend every ounce of energy you have.” I think it was just the environment and wanting to get one over spurs the players got a bit carried away and no player wanted to be the lazy one not pressing. It is literally impossible to maintain what arsenal did for the first 25 min of that game over a full 90 for any football team ever. It’s not a matter of fitness it’s a matter of mentality. It was a mistake of a young team. Not that it doesn’t still raise questions, as you said, it does (tho I don’t agree about what those questions are). But the question is NOT “are arsenal worse” like so many seem to be wanting desperately to believe. Jorginho is worse, yea for sure. As a team arsenal clearly are not though

Great analysis lads, especially the point that Arsenal was struggling to progress through the central area. I noticed that Odegaard was receiving the ball far fewer times , and he is the most vital player who is critical in build-up from 2nd 1/3rd to final 1/3.... So Arteta has to work it out. And Jorginho was probably his attempt to change things... I am disappointed Kai Havertz is still struggling to integrate into the team playstyle and doesnt take initiative... Very worrying signals for Arsenal and fans

Spurs just moved the ball in their own half 55% in Spurs zone while arsenal 55 % of the ball was attacking spurs half . Spurs spent the ball in arsenal zone 18 % and 27 % was midfield . Ange was smart the best defense was to keep the ball away arsenal and press very hard tactical to maintain 100 minutes it worked

If Arteta would have just sat back like other mid-table teams do against Arsenal, that would have definitely meant Plan-B for Ange & Co. Best way to beat Spurs is either be very good at pressing the center backs and/or pivots (and taking your chances) or just sit back and counter.

As people who are surprised at Spurs this season actually look at the Spurs team this season ? Romero - world cup winning CB. VDV- A cb that is regarded as one of the best young CB in football. Madders - PL experience has won the PL and FA cup. Bissuma - A player who many feel is one of the best Mid in the PL. Son - World class striker. Mixed among them is players who are very good players who can only get better. Moreover. Ange won the treble last season. He know has better players. Not saying Spurs will win the treble as they cant. Saying how their playing shouldn't be a surprised.

Arteta really have a big homework to sort out the midfield and the goal threat issue (which is closely interlinked with the way Arsenal playing). Kudos to spuds, Bissouma and Maddison are playing well for them. I still scratching my head of why Arteta choose Havertz instead of Maddison.

For me this game really highlighted how much Arsenal miss Martinelli and Trossard. if both of our best left wingers are not available for selection then the only outlet we have is to Saka out on the right wing and that it too easy for an opponent to deal with. Having said that, Udogie had a good game, as did Bissouma and Maddison. Fair play to Spurs, they played very well.

It's funny how conclusive takes are of both Spurs and Arsenal after just 6 games. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Spurs have rercuited very well in the summer with smart buys, they also are playing with a new system, manager and composition of players. We've seen it in the past, teams analyse and adapt and this will eventually happen with Spurs, have we seen many teams set a low block against Spurs? No, not really. That's the next step for what is looking like a brilliantly set up team for now and the future. Arsenal aren't as bad as the general consensus is. We saw City 'struggle' to figure their new system out at the start and its the same thing happening with Arsenal this season, if it can happen with the best team in the world, it shouldn't be a surprise that they're still a work in progress. What is evident is that despite their struggles, Arsenal have 14 points and are 'only' 6 points behind City and 4 behind title challenging Liverpool. Underlying data suggests that right now top 4 appears to be the teams mentioned above: Liverpool, City, Spurs and Arsenal in no particular order - let's see how things change by Christmas where teams drop off, or push on. The season is still early, guys!

@hilmer316 Thanks for calling out two instances where teams did! I never said no teams at all have, but there's a difference between what City face, for example, almost every game and other teams in the leagues cope with. All I am saying is, Spurs are doing well, very well but at some point they'll be hiccups as there are with all teams in their rebuild. It would be wrong to assume they've 'made it', with again only 6 games being in to his tenure. Sometimes you have to take a few steps back to truly move forward and it'll be interesting to see how they handle it.

I actually think that the Spurs were the better squad and that Arsenal should feel lucky to have taken home the 3 points. An own goal and a handball was Arsenal's scoreline. Jesus had the only real chance created by Arsenal. Spurs created their own chances and if Romeno had not had those two critical errors or moments of bad luck..... I tend to think Spurs would have left with the 3 points.
@Puckett.

I won't pretend to understand how XG are calculated but seeing both sides have less expected goals then real goals is kind of surprising. Considering how many great chances there were that were saved. That Johnson shot that was palmed away by Raya I'd assume had to be a very high expected goal. and Spurs 2nd goal also was a pretty easy setup after the huge blunder by Havertz. so seeing Spurs only have 1.4 XG seems low. Arsenal's XG of 1.8 seems about right. the Penalty is always a full 1 point XG, the OG is obviously not an XG but then you throw in some of the big saves Vicario made 1.8 seems pretty fair for Arsenal.
