Wondering if this is real? Spot any repeated baskets? This was created using the actual radio broadcast. The video is a carefully made composite (with several shots needing to be be repeated) with film of one of Wilt's 73 point games against the same New York Knicks team that happened a few months later. Using score cards I was able to reorganize the baskets to sync with the audio and have the accurate field goal and free throw progression of the 100 point game. So no, it isn't video of the event ...BUT with the audio and progression of baskets it may be as close as we can hope to get to a highlight of this game. No cameras were present in Hershey Arena the day of the 100 point game, because it was a road game for both teams (neutral location) in a small town that was not equipped to video broadcast sporting events. Many NBA games at the time were simply not broadcast on tv especially when on the road like this back in 1962 other than maybe being covered on the radio such as this night. The reason some other games such as the 73 point game have footage is because they were played at larger venues like Madison Square Garden. Hope everyone enjoys this opportunity to see the closest thing we can to this game!

Great recreation. It's hard for people today to understand that very few NBA games were filmed in any capacity until about 1970. As you well know there are hardly any video clips available of Mikan, Schayes, Pettit or other early 50s players (you've dug up most of them). Even Wilt and Russell have only a couple dozen games of video available of their playing career (this changed considerably in 1970 when ABC expanded its national coverage of the NBA but even so there aren't that many Wilt games available on video. Contrast that to LeBron James -- literally every basket of his entire career is available on video (the challenge is digging it up and getting broadcast rights.)

Grew up watching him and Russell nearly every Sunday, and got to see him live once vs. the Royals in 1966. He was being interviewed side court when we came in, and our seats were behind the basket in the first row, so I had to walk right past him. Seeing him up close just standing with the sports guy interviewing you could see the muscles, the veins, and the size. TV does not convey his sheer size or power. The Royals had a 6'8" center (6'10" today) in Wayne Embry. Embry went about 280 by then and it was all muscle. When the 76rs were playing our basket Embry would stand behind him and push Wilt with all his weight away from the paint. At one point Wilt made a subtle motion like a man adjusting his cuff, and Embry bounced off the stanchion right in front of us. That was nearly 60 years ago, and I've never seen anything like him. Not even close.

@gynandroidhead2 жыл бұрын
Not to start a team without Wilt Chamberlain is sheer lunacy. I get asked by younger players what kind of numbers he'd put up in today's game. My answer is always the same: "I honestly don't know, but what I DO know is that he would have the capacity to adjust to ANY era and be a dominant force." We also get the questions of embellished and conflated numbers (excluding that one) regarding his strength, blocked shot totals, athleticism, etc. I am sure some of them were, but does it REALLY take away from how amazing he was, the records he set (of which 70+ still stand and he hasn't played in 50 years), and how he drastically changed the game? These recollections are being stated not only by NBA players, but ALL TIME great HOF NBA players whose names are met with respect. Why would they repeat stories where Wilt made them look like ordinary players? These recollections aren't all playground legend and urban myths. --------------- Because of your amazing channel, there are more people "rooting for Goliath." Hopefully, they'll also gain a broader historical context as well.
@tylerhingleton84932 жыл бұрын
I think his rebounding and blocking shot stats would take a dive due to the game being more perimeter-oriented, but I don't see his scoring average declining, since you aren't allowed to touch today's players. Nahhhh, he was a great shot blocker but a lot of that had was because he was towering over 95% of the players he faced (much like the heavily inflated rebounding numbers). He was known to half ass it on defense quite a bit outside of blocks especially when he had it going offensively. Give him props for the ridiculous stats but don't say he was a defensive monster the entire time as well because he def. wasn't. Saying that he would still be a dominant force in any era but would not be putting anywhere close to the same numbers, let's be real.

Second, Wilt was never the tallest center in the NBA and there were some damn good Hall of Fame centers that were 7 footers that wilt played against light in. and night out when you consider that players then were measured barefoot until Wilt retired and then in '73 they started measuring players with shoes on. With shoes on Bill Russell was 6'11", Walt Bellamy was 7', and Nate Thurmond was a long 7', for example. By the way, I have seen recently a lot of talk about Wilt's FT shooting and that he abandoned underhand technique because it didn't look cool. which made him worse after his best FT season (1961/62). We both know that's not the case, so maybe you'll make a video showing that Wilt kept shooting that way until he got traded to the Lakers? I thought about doing such video, but I don't have much time recently for more advanced YT projects.

Yes I don't know how that concept even came up, I have definitely thought about doing a project on that because it clearly isn't true! I will see what I can do!

Hey. I can't believe that the two GOAT Wilt fans are here at once😁 BTW, I'm Kristjan Klavžer, the author of IN SEARCH OF THE NBA GOAT. I'd be honored if you checked out my work. And if you do, check out the 2020/21 version. I don't want to spoil the book, but I think that every Wilt fan should check it out🙂 This guy is the GOAT yet horribly underrated and misunderstood. Anyway, thank you for your great work!

Why did wilt's fadeaway looked way better in this video? Anyone explain it, Due to injury?
@WiltChamberlainArchive2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are comparing it to, but from my own playing experience when you take more shots over an extended period of time your form can sharpen up and it can sort of get rusty if you take less. He reduced his volume and focus later in his playing career to facilitate and / or only posted up a fraction of the amount of times so it's possible his touch and form eroded a bit. He also did have a severe knee injury and surgery during and after the 1970 season, and a lot of the footage of him is after that season due to film becoming more popular in the 70's.

I saw him play in 61' at Syracuse.Back in those days after the game you could just walk right on the court.I walked up to him and couldn't think what to say. I actually just couldn't believe anybody was that tall.He was so imposing i just gawked until he headed for the locker room.In my eyes he also doesn't get enough credit for the amazing athlete he was.
@frederickrapp5396 Жыл бұрын
Except for Wilt, did any of the other players ever dunk the basketball in 1961? I don’t think that many of the players in 1961 were even capable of dunking.
@danevans5823 Жыл бұрын
If you were alive then you would know that more men could dunk than couldn't.They were talented players with the same hops as today.I saw Dave Bing in 63' playing at Manley Field house dunking over 6'10 guys with ease.He was 6'3. I don't know where you got this info from
@frederickrapp5396 Жыл бұрын
@@danevans5823 I was alive in 1961, but don’t recall a lot of players dunking the basketball. Maybe 1-2 a game. More two hand set shots, baseline jump shots, and layups off the fast break. Players were better schooled in the fundamentals than today. Now, players rely more on their athleticism.
