Thanks so much for this informative video. Ancestry's DNA test is on sale now. I think I need to get it and take it. No specific questions in my research right now that I need one of the other ones for.

Well if you’re an Ancestry subscriber then I would take their test. Full disclosure, if you use the link in my Show Notes, I’ll get a small commission. Ancestry is on sale right now for $59. That’s a really good deal.

I went with Ancestry DNA. Connie here is my problem. I have a McPeake in New Zealand that done his DNA recently. Im trying to see if my DNA would match. My family left Ireland in the early 1700s and a few migrated in the 1800s. Nothing after that. I do know that im kin to all the ones in the USA. I also ran into the same problem on 2 people in my family where there was no fathers names.
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV 5 жыл бұрын
Sos did you match to the guy in New Zealand? I’m not clear on the problem. Keep in mind that you may be going up the tree 200-300 years and then back down to the guy in NZ. So autosomal DNA goes back about 210 years before it’s unreliable and then the amount of DNA you inherit is about 3% leaving behind 97% not passed down to you. You could still be related to this guy but just not genetically.

@@GenealogyTV No not at this moment.im thinking of doing a UK DNA test since it was processed thru the UK. I know how they got to New Zealand. England sent the criminals there in the 1800s and the McPeake"s never left. His tree only goes that far back. Now i do have some in Northern Ireland that have never left there. And they named a town after us and a music school. Ballymcpeake is the town and Francis McPeake of the famous Mcpeake Family music group. Lots of history to go thru. Im also kin to General Merrill McPeake he was a 4 star general in the navy and Sandy McPeak the actor and Holly McPeak all from California. There ancestors all started in Tennessee where im from and migrated there during the gold rush and stayed there. But would it be a good investment to do another DNA test. Im also on Ged Match also.

I can only go back to 7th great grandfather that came over and started over in the USA. His son DANIEL MCPEAK settled in Pennsylvania and his house built in 1740 is on the historical registry list and still stands. Im hoping to one day go see it. And my 4th great grandfather i have his will and his childrens names but i have searched for years as to where him and his wife are buried there is nothing after 1838. My GGG grandfather was only 8 then and he and siblings had a Guardian over them and when he got 18 came to my county and that's where my family line began.

What about these new algorithms that claim to plot a timeline of your dna and isolate towns and villages your ancesters lived in?

I’d examine the evidence closely. It might provide good clues.

Great explanation! Tested at 3 and my sons also. Problem I am having with sons if you can help....they only Y-DNA to a certain man born 1763, no one else. 37 markers tested and no matches to another male. We are stuck for the 1763 male! But I am thinking possibly he was half Native American because they had maternal societies? Whoever he was, he seems to be lacking family roots. Thoughts?
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV 5 жыл бұрын
you may just have to wait till other Y-DNA test takers show up. This could take years. In the meantime you might try and autosomal DNA test like the one at ancestry.

Hi Connie I was adopted and found my paternal line through ancestry last October through Ancestry. I now have a large tree. My adoptive brother just found a brother and other family. What sites do u suggest to find possible half siblings? Bio father in Navy many years and mostly unmarried. Also trying to find real identity if adoptive grandfather using my 1st cousins dna. He was born in approx 1857...similar to your grandfather. I am managing my cousins dna and have only one other Male cousin I can compare matches. We believe he was using an alias name.
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV 5 жыл бұрын
Based on what I understand of your situation, ancestry would probably be the best. Half siblings are going to be roughly half the DNA of a full sibling measured in cM’s. You could also download your raw DNA and upload it to Gedmatch or other services like Family Tree DNA or MyHeritage to see if you catch any other cousin matches.

I have been thinking about getting a DNA test done on me and my daughter wants to have one done as well. My mom is still living and she is 85 years old now. Every time I ask her to have one done she says no. She is afraid to find out that her father may not of been her dad. She wants to leave well enough done as she says. So, I 65 and my daughter is 39. I have followed my mother's father back to the 1st generation on his side. My daughter would be the 9th generation on my grandfather's line and the 12th generation on my mom's side. So, which DNA is best for use to take?
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV 4 жыл бұрын
Well yes, we need to respect Mom's wishes. Knowing the truth does not change the relationship she had with her father growing up, but I understand. It's a delicate situation. They (not Ancestry) are also starting to do DNA on items such as stamps, hair etc. Just FYI.

@@GenealogyTV My mom is on cloud 9 right now. She found her other sister. My mom is the third child of a set of triplets. Her other sister's were born before midnight and she was a minute after. There was Beverly, Helen and my mom. The way she found out was that Beverly was looking for Helen and my mom. My brother knew that mom found Helen a few years back and got to meet her before Helen passed on . My brother got a hold of Beverly.

Ancestry is good for general population of the US. Your mom and dad test, so you can test and see them. More of a novelty than anything really useful. Tools they claim to have do not work for my daughter in law. 23andme is super good if you Asian and everything works way far better than Ancestry. The others just do a transfer. If you test at all the companies you don't really need GEDmatch. They allow access by the police and I have a bed feeling they will sell out to some other company. If your adopted you won't have a tree nor will all the other adopted matches.

I did an Ancestry and quite frankly not impressed... it didnt get the Melanesian although others I submitted the same DNA to, did get the Melanesian.. I mean if you are going to do a DNA test you should be getting the true results...sigh

Try different companies, different results. Not very accurate. Myheritage seems to be the worst.
