What Do Angels Look Like? (As Imagined by an AI Art Generator)

There's a wild (and very detailed) description of what angels look like in the Bible in Ezekiel chapter one. This passage has fascinated people all around the world for centuries because it's so difficult to visualize what Ezekiel is describing, and because the description seems so different than how we typically imagine angels to look. In this video we're going to see if we can get a better sense of it by entering these ancient descriptions into an artificial intelligence (AI) art generator.

Theres lots of different angels and they can take on different forms. I saw Archangel Michael in a dream. He was 300ft+ tall standing on the ocean full greek style armor with helmet no shield huge white wings. The armor was I think all gold and had inscriptions on it. The sword also. He was enveloped in golden light almost too bright to see but his head was down in prayer. It was a dream of 1 thessalonians 4 13-17. Beyond epic.

I saw Archangel Michael in a dream of 1 thessalonians 4 13-17. He was over 300ft tall had white wings greek style armor all golden and inscribed same with his 2 handed sword. Had a helmet I think but he was enveloped in golden light almost too bright to see. His sword was pointed between his feet with hands resting on the hilt head was down in prayer. I dont have words to describe how epic and glorious is was but maybe God can help you draw it. I was an orb with thousands of other orbs we looked like blue white electricity balls and communicated telepathically. We were hovering all around him and once he was done praying we all magnetically shot down to his feet and he exploded up into the air spinning creating a giant vortex with his wings. I could see the wing tips make clouds he was going so fast. We spun around like glitter under his feet until we got into the upper atmosphere and then I woke up. God bless!

A few thoughts: The "CH" in "cherubim" (if I'm not mistaken) is pronounced with a "K" sound like in Nebuchadnezzar. The wheel intersecting a wheel makes ke think more like how we illustrate an atom (keeping in mind that thenimage of an atom is, itself how we depicted something we couldn't see). Wheels in ancient times would not have been cogs and mechanical in appearance but would have been used for chariots (and possibly certain tools). These wheels would have two possible appearances. One depiction would show spokes while the other (such as a spinning wheel) would seem like a circle around a central point...again, like an atom) The four faces and multiple wings as well as the fact that they don't turn as they move is an indication that these MAY be beings who transcend merely three dimensions which would cause thier movement to confound our ability to fully grasp what we were seeing.This is not necessarily the case but is worth considering. Regardless of thier nature, the sight must have been...well... traumatically and awe-inspiringly wonderful. The fear...the amazement... the sense of how small and insignificant you are in the presence of such beings while knowing that they, too, are mere servants of One even greater still... It makes one contemplate why we have such a lack of reference and even treat God with less dignity than we would some random person we see on the street as we go about our day.

As for the Mid journey aspect, you might try getting it to render an image where you leave out all fire and just let it focus on the appearance of a singular being. (Bearing in mind that having "legs like a calf" may or may not be meant in a literal sense and may just refer to the way the legs bend or how the musculature is developed.) Just some thoughts.

I saw an angel once at night standing at a corner of my house. He was standing sideways, over 6 foot tall with the moon highlighting thick auburn hair that curled at the nape of his neck. One thing, though, about the "biblically accurate angels" trend is it to some extent has become the mythology it was originally meant to combat. One thing you see in most "biblically accurate angels" art (not so much in your art but it's still somewhat there because of the training data) is the angels having a giant central eye; for example. This is not described in the bible (eyes are mentioned but they are never said to be giant or central). There's also the concept in that trend that every angel looks like the ones in Ezekiel, which is flatly false.

so, uh... this is one of my great and profound annoyances (it's also wildly petty, so take it for what it is ;) ) - Cherubim and Seraphim are never described as 'angels' in the Scriptures. 'Angel' is a job description, not a species... but every time you see an angel, it has no wings, is in appearance like a man, and has an important message for somebody - hence the term 'angelos' in Greek and 'malakh' in Hebrew - both mean 'messenger'. I've quite recently spent time preaching on Ezekiel 1, and have a sermon series through Revelation that engage with this topic. I actually think AI does a pretty amazing job of capturing the essence of what the prophets were seeing - though I think too it's fairly evident that they lacked the ability to 100% describe something that is essentially profoundly alien (in the true sense of that word - not little green men). I think though we should expect some of that when we come to the Scriptures. God *is* alien - and in fact I would suggest that the word 'holy' bears that implication, even from the beginning. That which is holy is alien - foreign, different, 'other'. And that's why the Seraphim around the throne cry 'holy, holy, holy'. They're not declaring "you're set apart for God" (a common understanding of 'holy' that only works if you're talking about earthly things) - they're declaring that He is completely and uniquely 'other'. Utterly foreign in a way that is majestic and glorious and pure and wholly beyond our understanding. These images go some very small distance toward capturing that thought. It's a worthwhile exercise. I appreciate it!

I am Orthodox and as a result I have a very diverse view of angels. Six eyed, six winged Seraphim, Cherubim, arch angels. I think there are nine ranks of heavenly angels. I am not even sure I would recognize an angel if they had a message for me. This was fun.

Ezekiel provides one of the most vivid imagination of beings beyond our world, so like St. John did with the Apocalypse, Ezekiel used analogy to describes what he saw as best as he could. One such example is the appearance of wheels strongly suggest the shape of gyroscope. What is the role of gyroscope but provide stability and orientation? What does the prophet show us? That the wheels did not move unless directed by the Spirit - that is the Spirit of God - the Holy Spirit. It goes to show that God is at the very center of it all - His Spirit directs and His creations obeyed without objection. It also show that these majestic beings are finely in tune with God's Spirit.

A possibility of what Ezekiel witnessed is an extraterrestrial craft. When I searched the internet for images of what he described, many interesting renditions including Vimānas were posted. There is a particular one that depicts what Ezekiel could have seen, and it is an illustration of what we popularly refer to as a flying saucer or disc.

I used to dabble a bit in coding when I was younger. When I got deep into a coding project, I noticed that I would start to feel the code in a weird Synesthesia like feeling. Something that is hard to explain. I get the feeling we're reading something similar here. It's hard to make heads to wings (see what i did there ) of the text because we're assuming we're viewing only visual information. I feel like, when I read it, that Ezekiel is applying visual meaning to some other sense(spiritual sense?). I also get the feeling there may have also been some sort of temporal shenanigans. Maybe each face is a development stage or a different angels at different temporal points merged into one. Wait, was that a Star Trek episode?🙃 Oh, wiat, that was Babylon 5. 🤣🤣🤣 What I do know is Matt utilized a supercomputer that statistically inferenced images based on the majority of humans verbal and visual collective knowledge. And came up with cool, but ultimately insufficient images. I think that part is in the bible in order to show that we, even collectively, can't come close to comprehending God's glory.

The angel I saw had a robe on and very curly hair that was shoulder length. The angel was large statured. He/she was kneeling and the shoulders were hitting in that position right above counter height. The most interesting thing was how large the wings were. They were folded behind where the tips of wings were on the floor and the elbows were more the 6ft, so i could imagine if they would have expanded you would have to double the number. It was a humbling experience.

This is a very thought provoking undertaking. When I read scripture, I do stop to imagine what is being described. I can’t come close drawing, nor do I have AI software to give it a chance. But I think it is very appropriate, as Christ coming is soon, that we saturate ourselves in scripture, and that includes doing what you are doing. I have seen several depictions of what the parting of the Red Sea would actually look like, with the likely scale of men to water. I have seen depictions of the pillar of smoke and fire from Exodus. It is super cool to meditate on the awesomeness of God’s BIGNESS of these events. Please continue doing this! Oh, the 4 faces, I saw a depiction of it in an X File episode. The head was 4 sided, and it would turn revealing each face.

Lucifer isn't mentioned in Ezekiel 28. It's mostly an adress to the king of Tyre, but the allusion may actually be to Adam, not Satan. Totally with the idea of God using angels as vehicles. Psalm 18 has it! If it's good enough for David, it's good enough for me.

This being in Ezekiel 28 is also cast out from " Eden the garden of God" like the serpent in Genesis 3. We know from Revelation 12:9 that Satan is referred to as "that ancient serpent of old" which seems to be an allusion to the serpent of Genesis 3.

I've always imagined the vision of Peter's of "something like a large sheet" being more like a floating platform out of TRON. How would someone in that world even begin to describe modern or futuristic technology? We get so caught up details, but I tend to think they'd skip past the rigmarole of minutiae details that aren't important and just get more to the point. And when we go back and try to reconstruct it, we focus on those images instead of the message. Though, I understand that you're doing a thought exercise here and not a sermon series. But still, was Jesus crucified on a cross or an execution stake? Was he born in December or March? Was he 6'2" or 5'7"? Or does any of that really matter as much as who he was, what he said, and what he did?

One interesting thing about the cherubs is it seems only those particular ones have four heads/wings. The cherub statues that appear later in ezekiel seem to have two heads/wings. Also, one part in ezeikiel it says 'head of a man', while in the other it says 'head of a cherub' (as if the other three heads might *not* be regarded as the head of a cherub).

when I was in high school I was in an arts magnet program and was fascinated by odd biblical descriptions. For a period of time I happened to agree with the now-popular "biblically accurate angels" videos on youtube... but over time I've come to realize that hyping up these odd descriptions, and doubling down on ONLY the weirdest parts, especially in light of the different passages in different areas that seem to describe something similar... it aint like the popular weird alien images online.

I have studied the bible many years and Ezekiel is one of my favorite books. What he is trying to give you and image of is a Ship that has rings within rings. Slow down and read each sentence one by one. The Living Creatures are very important. Their heads are not square but each have a face of a man on the front, on the right side was the Lion, on the left the Ox, on on the back the Eagle. The rest of the scene, the rings - read that very carefully. Rings that sparkle like 'topaz' (just and FYI..lol). So they are a bit of a light bronze color but shiny. The eyes could be Windows but round which would not be something Ezekiel would be familiar with so he said 'eyes'. They might also have a cover on them that may have been either opening and closing at the time he seen them - again, appearing to be eyes. Same with the eyes on the wings. Not literal but more of a pattern. I believe the faces seen on the wings may have been pattern as well, in fact it could well be the face of God they bore. English translations and cultural cosmology creates some issues with Ezekiel 1 and 10. The cherubims' faces align with the cardinal points of the Babylonian zodiac, and given that these cultures (Israel included) were astronomically and/or astrologically literate, can easily point to the more important issue within Ezekiel's visions: Yahweh on His Throne. The cherubim throne of the God of Israel was in the temple, per 1 Chr 28:18 (David gave the "blueprints" to Solomon), so what Ezekiel is seeing is that his God is not just the God of Israel, but also the God who is superior to Marduk or anyone else in Babylon's territorial pantheon. How? Because the location of Ezekiel's vision in chapter 1 would have been down the road from Enlil's (likely ancient) temple. So if the guardians of the throne of Yahweh are divine beings, who represent the reigning empire's astrological system, but they're leading Yahweh's throne on location outside Enlil's decaying temple, then my God is telling his prophet "Dude, I'm the God of the cosmos, not just the God of Israel. Location cannot limit me (Babylon included), and I am here for you. My Jerusalem temple may be gone, but you know it is due to the rebellion of Judah, but I will be with you. Now go and be my covenant watchdog to those rebellious people and call them to repentance." Essentially, Ezekiel 1 is an unfamiliar (to modern westerners) snapshot cosmic warfare and religious polemics. And Yahweh is in control, and winning, the whole time.

The movement of angels sounds suspiciously similar to how a higher dimensional entity, say 4th or 5th dimensional being, would appear to be moving through 3-dimensional space. It would look really weird and difficult to describe in detail

It is interesting you say you don't think we live in a simulation. I don't know either, but pretty much all religions describing the world pretty much match a simulation. You are given a body, with your soul riding it, so you can live in the physical world, and after your physical body expires (dies) you return to where you came from? Now I'm not saying it is done by a computer similar to what we understand, but it is done by something! It doesn't mean our world is fake or not real, same as every bit in a computer exists and is real.

Probably my favorite sculpture is in San Francisco on market Street called 'Angel'. When I first saw it, it had a physical impact on me. I continued to visit that sculpture until I left San Francisco. I cannot forget it. It is my favorite Of the many many sculptures in San Francisco out on the streets free for public viewing.

The four fixed signs of the zodiac: man (aquarius), leo, bull (taurus), eagle (highest form of scorpio). And yes, the wheel exist, is the zodiac circle. Some of the images are similiar to the tarot card: the wheel of fortune. You also have the same four fixed signs in there ;) in the universe card of the major arcana... The burning bush is in the lovers card. You have to see the rider-waite version of it!

I witnessed an Angel and heard thousands singing. It looked nothing human, more like Batman with large oval shaped cerulean sky blue eyes, and huge ginormous wings. It was invisible altho i could see it. There was no verbal message, it looked as though it was listening with its head tilted to the left. The Angelic choir was Heavenly, so beautiful. My legs buckled from under me and i dropped to my knees and cried. The feeling of uncondional love, protection and comfort was indescribable. I felt the love literally lift me up like soft clouds and put me on my feet. I was told by peofessionals i was mentally unwell, depressed and delusional. They also put razor blades in my room and my medical notes said i wasnt humble enough.

the 4 cherubim are throne guardians, and they are carrying the throne of God on a square platform formed by their wings touching in the middle of 4 sides of the platform with an angel at each corner, and each one has a castor... a wheel that can move omnidirectionally like wheels on a well made castor-wheel assembly... it's an ancient version of a table with wheels at all 4 corners, and each wheel is connected via a throne guardian, and each thrown guardian has 2 supporting wings and 2 flying wings, and they face 4 directions with a face representing 3 animals and a man, animals often used in biblical symbolism... the entire point of the passage is borrowing imagery from the temple and the ark of the covenant, and it's a spiritual/plane heavenly version of these accoutrements of God's presence in the real world, and God is showing to Ezekiel, that God isn't stuck in Jerusalem, he is free to move wherever he wants, to be with h is people and accomplish his will. It's an image of the freedom and sovereignty of God. His throne is omnidirectionally free and he can exert his rule anywhere he wants, see anything he wants, and be with us whenever he wants. The disaster that befell Judah didn't limit God.

I lay on an Emergency Room Hospital Bed. A Catholic Nun stopped by and I asked her to pray for me as I thought I was about to die. She prayed that God would send his Angels. I looked up and saw a 8ft maybe 10 foot Angel. It had long flowing redish hair. He wore a headband. His robe was a pure white flowing robe with a gold band across his chest. He wore a waist band. His wings had feathers. His robe had a collar with intricate embrodeiry. He looked at me. He had a very masculine facial structure but he had a very comapssionate facial expression and smile. He said, "you are going to be alright" and then he vanished. I later recovered and my severe chest pain turned out to be a bad case of GERD. After a few days, I was all ok. I often thank God and Jesus for thinking of me.

The suggestion is that the Apostle John in Revelation is actually looking down on Earth from Polaris and, when you do that, the view is Earth surrounded by the constellations Leo the Lion, Taurus the bull, Orion the man, and Aquila the eagle.

Thank you for sharing, both the images and your thoughts. Surely the descriptions in Ezekiel are intended to exceed our imagination, no matter how much technology advances. Another aspect is the limitations of language - taking a simple example, how would you describe reinforced concrete using only language of the Babylonians? Hint: Daniel 2 v33.

I read a book when I was 16 ( 40 odd years ago ) that I think was called " Ezekiel - Manna from Heaven", it was the Bible through a Ancient Alien type writer. So my idea of Angels was always a little off the norm, but trying to make sense and imagine these Angels always was difficult because it seemed more like a machine. If we follow the train of thought about the vision being Technological, we have to remember that Man's thoughts are based on the thoughts that transpire because all things come from God, so if man thinks technologically it is because those thoughts come from God. ( I am not religious but who is to say there isn't an element of truth in it somewhere.) Also remember this world that we know, is very Mundane, Coarse, Raw and Solid - God would be Above, Beyond, Glorious and Ethereal so for us to explain him in terms that would be easily recognisable is very much sub standard, we don't have the exact words to do Him justice.

When my son and I saw angels they had no form they were just pure light, so bright like lightning... The first night only I saw them they lit up my whole backyard flashing like fireflies but lit up the whole mountain. This happened right after I battled demons in my dream, I woke at 3:30 and prayed they leave in the name of Jesus Christ, then I saw the Angels. This occurred the same night I repented and gave my life to Christ. The next night my son also saw them, he was 9 at the time, they stayed for a week and I knew they were protecting us. I haven't physically seen them since, but I know they still watch over us.
