Your birds look very healthy, if you can keep them in dry conditions a lot of the normal breathing problems do not get a foothold in your flock, and the use of wood shavings is very sound, it also gives a good base when you put the cleanings on the compost heap, I found our compost heap just sat there for months without decomposing, when I put the clearings on there it rotted down in just a few weeks, like magic! What predators do you have to contend with where you are ? The Fox is the main problem in Europe, they can wipe out the whole flock in one night, and I leave mouse traps set at all times, it is surprising how many you catch, even though there is no other sign of them. Stay safe ! Chris B.

Thanks for watching Chris. Our biggest predator here is Raccoons and Coyotes. I just make sure that I lock my poultry in every night. So far we haven't lost any in years. With my chicken compost I've been using it to cover my strawberries since there dormant now. With all the nitrogen this winter absorbing into the ground and roots the strawberry plants should produce like crazy next summer! Stay safe and Happy Holidays!

we have the whole predator population where I live. Coons, Opossums, Coyotes, Fox, Mink, Weasels, Hawks, even Bald Eagles. Saw a Blad Eagle sitting on a tree limb directly over our run a few days ago. We had to predator-proof the run and coop.

wow. so much information in the video. i sure would like some farm fresh eggs but there are only grocery store eggs that ya don't even know where they come from. yeah, the farm is listed on the package and date if ya trust the label.

Thanks for watching! I totally agree, farm fresh are the best! It's funny when you crack at store bought egg versus a farm fresh egg the yolk color doesn't even compare or the taste the same. Happy holidays and stay safe!

Hi Shellie! I loved this video. Its been years since I had chickens, but I would love to have just a few again. I learned a lot from you today, about pest control, the pecking block and moulting. Actually, your other videos I've learned how to sex babies, so it seems I learn something from each of your videos. I love the white chicken with black in your video and the one that has patches of different colors the best, but all of them are pretty and look so healthy. I watched a video that you made when you groomed your German Shepherd. I would like to get the brush or whatever it was for our dog. Could you let me know what it was and where I can find it? Your daughter does a great job filming your videos! We hope you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving! I am still recouping from both of my knee surgeries, but improving a little each day. At least the worst is over! I am looking forward to gardening again. My husband is doing well so far, thank God. 🙏 I love 💘 watching yours and Mike's videos! You guys are always busy doing things. I dont know how you find time after homeschooling your girls. You're building many special memories!! Take care and happy holidays!!💙💜

Thanks Marcia for all the kind words. I'm glad that your husband and you are doing better and healing. I also love the white with black hens (Light Brahma) . Wait I love them all, I can't choose! They're all so different and they have different personalities which makes it fun to just sit and watch them. Maybe soon we'll all run into each other in town. Happy Holidays to you all as well! 😇

So we have our first flock and they're about 5 mos old. Question: After your chickens go through their first molt, will their new feathers/markings be the same as their old ones or do they look different?
@farmmom7140
@farmmom7140 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Your chickens will look exactly the same. Just at the time the new feathers fully grow in your chickens will look beautiful and healthy with there new down. The first molt won't start till around 17-18months of age. After that, each year in the early fall they will molt and regrow new feathers. Happy Holidays!
