I’m from Perth Western Australia and we definitely don’t get snow and our Emus are use to hot weather. It’s quite strange for me to see emus running around in the snow. Plus I’m jealous as it very hot at the moment and to have a play in the snow would be a nice change. 40-45 degrees Celsius.

From what I remember they said emus should be raised in at least pairs. But only Bamboo hatched in his set. So he had to wait a couple of months for the twins to hatch. He had a long time where it was only him & the humans. I think as a result he's bonded closer to them. The boys especially were like his hatchmates in how they played by running around the front yard.

@@lucasramey6427 It very much was adorable. I loved watching them grow up together. Hopefully it will lead to Bamboo also being a much friendlier emu than some. They can be fairly dangerous I some circumstances. Those feet/talons are not just for show. They can be a defensive weapon too. But I think bamboo really cares for them. Look up their old videos if you haven't seen it already & again if you have. I lived when they took bamboo on a leash to a local parade.

THERE IS SNOW IN AUSTRALIA! In the part of Australia I live in we get significant snow in winter on the mountains around us especially a couple of hours to the south. This is our Alpine area, is snowy for months. Wild emus survive fine even in the pretty snowy country, but they don't go much beyond the tree line as in deep wet snow they can get stuck easily with those two kinda crazy legs. If those emus have some alpine genetics, they'll be fine. If they are desert or tropical emus they may struggle. I've never been a fan of emus, but I've only ever known the real wild type. They are amazingly bold, will peck at you with bruising force, stalk you and steal your food. Your eyesight is at risk around wild emus! Obviously they are more friendly when raised right from the egg, but do try to teach those three that pecking is not acceptable! I'm nervous for the kids once the emus are fully grown.

She looks knock-kneed not bow legged. I honestly never even noticed until you mentioned because their emu movements are all so goofy to me in general. I think you guys will find yourselves needing to bring in a lot more straw and bedding for the first winter. Ducks and "tidy" just don't go together. Merry Christmas. Good luck with the swans.
@CopperValentine4 жыл бұрын
Since she's not in perfect condition, that probably means she should be taken out of the breeding pool. That should be the one they sell and the one in good condition should be Bamboo's mate.
@puirYorick4 жыл бұрын
@@CopperValentine It might be a consideration. I don't know enough about emu or ratite skeleton development or their genomic factors to determine that one. I have seen cases in some species where a baby develops too fast or too slow or for too long and ended up with non-genetic skeletal growth early on then grew into their own later. Some poultry that don't have a proper surface to walk on in their first weeks after hatching may develop gangly or splayed legs because the floor was too slippery. Nothing to do with genes in that case. Ratites may be different like I said.
@Matty.Disson4 жыл бұрын
puirYorick not enough calcification obviously! They don’t look like that in my country Australia but I think he knows he just isn’t saying anything because it’s to late to fix it now
@puirYorick4 жыл бұрын

Aloha from sunny warm Kauai! Two thoughts, first, if you want to keep the coyotes out, how about an electrified fence around the whole property, that way the flock can have more room. Second, I work at a cabinet shop that makes a lot of sawdust/wood shavings, we bag it and sell it to farmers, ranchers. If you have a need for bedding, that is a great source if there is a cabinet shop close to you.

You spoke of the Coyotes... I found this and thought of you: Don’t feed coyotes and make sure you prevent any access to food. Don’t leave pet food outside and secure all trash. Try to keep small mammals (like squirrels) from eating around bird feeders. Their presence can attract coyotes. Clean grills and put them away when not in use. Dispose of any dead animals such as roadkill. Don’t let your pets go outdoors alone and bring them in at night. If you need to keep your pets outside, put in fencing and motion sensor lights to keep predators away. Keep any outdoor animals (chickens, goats, etc.) in enclosures or secure areas. If you see coyotes nearby, haze them. That means scaring them with loud noises, waving your arms, throwing objects towards them (not at them), and/or spraying a hose.
