Can you do a review on "The Row"? The Olsen Twins have been around in the fashion industry forever and I think their brand would be cool to discover if their quality is worth the high pricing or if the pricing is created with the idea of releasing product for their celebrity customers?

@@tanner.leatherstein Funny story: I carry a huge laptop for work and was sick of using a nylon backpack. I found what I thought was a really attractive leather bag on Etsy that would accomodate my enormous computer and still look chic. What showed up is a Margaux super fake. Literally every single detail is the same including the interior fabric and the embossed hardware. The irony is I had never heard of The Row until I googled it and saw the price (my bag was about $250). The quality is exquisite (perfect thick edge paint, perfect stitching, substantial hardware with clean embossing). The seller has disappeared, probably re-invented under another shop name.

I often think the greatest compliment a fashion or accessories brand can have is popularity in the Japanese market. To me they are the most discerning, appreciative and stylish consumers who recognise quality and craftsmanship when they see it., and they rarely buy into hype or for the sake of showing off wealth. If the world were filled with Japanese-minded consumers, individuality would flourish and there would be a thriving independent craft industry, and our shopping streets would be filled with exciting shops and quality vintage stores instead of the cookie-cutter fast fashion and mass-luxury chains that currently blight our cities.

Japan is a leather bag lover's heaven. Leather for crafting is sold in Tokyu Hands (a store chain that's basically everywhere) for hobby leather bag makers and crafters too, so even as a casual shopper I think people develop an eye for what's good and bad, what's high quality and what's plastic cheap stuff. The designs there are *a lot* about function and durability, not just about status since people there will get give side-eye to bags and fashion that give off too much of a "look at me, I'm rich" vibe.

I met Il Bisonte founder Wanny at a trade show in Paris in 2014. I’m Italian, never heard of him nor the brand, snapped a photo because he looked amazing in his indeed very eccentric outfit. I had assumed it was maybe an emerging brand - turns out it was storied and well established, I just never once had heard of it. Now to learn they’re all the rage in Japan is just awesome lol

I love Il Bisonte. I've been buying pieces since the 1980s. I used to go to the Paris boutique on the rue du Cherche Midi in the 6th, a few steps from Poilâne bakery. I'd go to the bakery and then drop into Il Bisonte. I don't remember if that's the first Il Bisonte boutique that I went to in Paris to check it out, but when I noticed that boutique near my bakery, I started going to that one regularly whenever in Paris. Nice video and honest deconstruction. It appears they are made in Italy without the amount of attention to detail & hardware quality expected from an expensive bag & brand. It basically shows that a very high-quality leather bag can be made anywhere in the world using the best leather and components from around the world. High-quality craftsmanship & process really matters whether it's Asia or Europe. But the country of origin perceptions can get in the way of getting a premium price for the product. So people will pay more for a Made in Italy bag than one made in Asia even if the all-around quality is superior in the bag made in Asia.

The quality of their bag is amazing! I have many them… unfortunately it does not get the recognition it deserves
@tanner.leatherstein Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the recognition is all about marketing and when you fairly price your items you don’t have a large budget to run that type of marketing. The luxury houses does that well by overpricing their products first to give themselves that budget to overmarket and create the perception of quality and luxury (sometimes falsely). It’s a business choice of the brand but has a very important impact on the life of the business and its perceived value in the market
@barbthegreat586 Жыл бұрын
@@tanner.leathersteinMarketing 101: there's no (or very little,) relationship between quality and price because marketing is now about selling 'experience'. I think it says it all when even experts find it difficult to distinguish between a very expensive product and a knock off at a fraction of the price. I wish there's more diversity - if you want 'experience' but I'd like to have products of good quality at a decent price.

I live in Kyoto so I often go to the il Bisonte store to compare their prices and workmanship to my own work. At first I liked their minimalist designs and the natural vegtan look and smell but the more I learned about leathercraft the more my opinion changed. As you said with the clutch they're able to hide their seams but with items like wallets and coin cases these shortcomings become much more apparent. They don't use glue, bevel or even polish their edges so while the leather itself might be decent, it feels like a half-baked product for the price you're paying.
