The Quarians are fascinating to me cause it's survival and unity taken to a new level. Like yeah the Geth is very important in their history but the fact that Quarians managed to adapt and survive while also maintaining technological levels comparable to the major powers of the galaxy is nothing short of remarkable. On top of that they essentially created a whole new culture that both give their youth some freedom while also adding to their collective power.
@arx35162 жыл бұрын
Being stuck in spaceships made them totally dependant on technology. But i wonder why they couldn't find any suitable planet to migrate on after their exile from Rannoch. You'd think they could have found one within 1-2 decades after the exile.
@jaffarebellion2922 жыл бұрын
@@arx3516 They did. The Council threatened to bomb them off it, and they left.
@zeropolicy74562 жыл бұрын
It doesn't help that Rannoch's ecosphere is insanely unique, even by Mass Effect standards. Even if the found another planet suited for their incredibly delicate immune system, I think that it would essentially have to outside of Council Space for them to be allowed to successfully colonize. And we've seen what kind of a chaotic world it is outside the Council's sphere of influence. Couple that with the Council's ridiculous policy of an almost obsessive grip on grudges for past transgressions of formerly embassied races, and you have their hands essentially tied. They really do need to stay within what little good graces they have with the Council, because while they do not receive direct protection, they absolutely benefit from the massively increased safety and security from regulated Council space. Even with all of their technical knowledge, they absolutely cannot risk colonizing within Council space and burning their bridges with their only viable trade options. Nor can they risk colonizing outside Council space because of their delicate biology that makes them an easy target for bio-terrorism. The only reasonable thing for them to do was to take back their homeworld, Rannoch was never officially recognized as Geth owned, so they still have rights to it officially. They just lack the strength to seize it, and with the Council being fence-sitting pricks about the conflict on their front lawn, they have no real support until the threat of galactic cleansing via Reapers to reclaim what is legally still theirs. Sure,the Quarians played with fire and burnt their house down, but the lack of empathy for their refugees in the face of the "Geth Mistake" is a telling indicator of old world dogmatic philosophy that permeates the Council pre-Reaper War. Thankfully, my Shepard was able to lock everybody upside the head and get them to play nice if for no other reason than to fight a common enemy. And just so happened to broker peace between Quarians and the Geth as a happy side effect.

You missed one detail about Quarian biology that has driven me nuts for years. Upon arrival on Rannoch, and following paragon speaking options, Tali will say, "Our bodies carried the seeds that spread the desert grass." This is wild to me, because it implies one of two possibilities: A) Quarians eat raw grass, and freely defecate, or B) Quarians are fuzzy. There are other ideas, but those two are the most likely. 8 month old comment, I know, but there are 17 million quarians, and they get so many resources from trade and mining, and can't really exist next to others due to their immune systems. So if one of those races picked them up they wouldn't just be "oh hey it's cool if you live with us for a bit", they'd have to essentially give them a colony or star system in space and resources. That's not a small purchase. I don't disagree, I definitely think that the Taurians should have "bought" them, it just makes sense as natural allies, but I can understand why they wouldn't

Great video! I've always been a big fan of the Quarians and their background, even if the idea that they couldn't just find a new homeworld in the vast expanse of the galaxy is a bit convenient for the story. My one criticism of the species is that the designers fell into the tired old trope of making them look like humans with a few markings and or bumps on their heads as opposed to something truly alien like the Turians or Salarians. I would have prefered them to be not even remotely attractive by human standards; angular features, slit like nose, lipless mouth with needle-like teeth and pale, flat white eyes. Then Sheppard has to face this moral dilemma. Emotional or physical attraction. Seeing how Sheppard would have reacted in that situation would have been interesting.

It's not that they cannot find a new homeworld in the vast expanse of the galaxy. It's that they're space gypsies. Wherever they go, they encounter people who don't really want them to stay around too long. Their biology limits the number of suitable worlds they might colonize, all the other species around them aren't as limited so they always seem to get to worlds and resources first.
@artemismoonbow24752 жыл бұрын
@@OrangeRiver Or, whether they were originally pale in the light of their home world, life-times lived in the confines of an environmental suit would create the pale complexions of a cave dweller.
@PacMonster02 жыл бұрын
For the record, Tali explains pretty reasonably why they couldn't find a new homeworld. The Quarians *did* colonize other worlds than Rannoch. The Geth pushed the Quarians out of their entire home system, not just from their homeworld. And in the time it took to try and find a new homeworld their bodies had already adapted to the clean environment of their migrant fleets making settling any new world essentially suicide. Space is gigantic, and finding habitable worlds is not easy, let alone ones that meet their very specific physiological requirements. The mass effect relay network did not make the entire Galaxy 100% open to exploration (as the Humans immediately found out when happening upon Turian controlled space).

Something that Mass Effect messed up is that a three finger hand cannot stabilize a pistol grip while firing.
@voidseeker4394 Жыл бұрын
I think it'd be possible with two hands, if we account for enhanced strength in each individual finger. For one-handed grip special shape of the handle would be required. And i think it's missed oportunity - changing grip shape depending on the wielder specie. Our pistols often sold with different grips for different sized hands, and you can separately buy even more grip options. Same would make sense for multi-species economy.

I read that the clothing worn by female Quarians, specifically their hoods, was inspired by traditional iconic images of the Virgin Mary. This was originally done to fit the "virginal" and "almost motherly" quality which the developers saw in Tali. I also seem to notice how Quarians bear some similarities to Romani Gypsies as they're nomads who travel in a fleet of derelict ships that are similar to caravans, and they're discriminated by most of the galaxy who see them as thieves and vagrants,

Only having three fingers also allows for each finger to be stronger with the same muscle mass. The middle and ring finger on humans tend to be less strong and dexterous, so if you just took them out from birth and had the three remaining fingers be stronger to compensate, you probably wouldnt notice a difference (unless you want to roll and coin around your fingers i guess? since the spacing would be bigger? Medicines, immuno-boosters, everything a quarian would need to be safe and comfortable, even if it means paying for it out of my own pocket. The xenomorph in Alien/s have been depicted with 2 knees per leg. I've seen it on various posters and comic book art and drawings. The foot, being long and thin, still has a heel or more accurately, a rearward facing toe with a claw or talon with a subtle but physical ankle below the first knee that bends backwards (like a bird's knee) which is below the other knee that bends forwards. Other biological "abnormalities" would be the 6 digits on each hand. 4 fingers with 2 thumbs (on opposite sides of the palm from each other). No eyes but not entirely sure how they navigate their environments or hunt (echo location is a possibility but I'm not dismissing thermal or other non visual sensory types of input either). The 4 respiratory tubes on the back (I think they are necessary because the organism doesn't have enough room in it's head/neck for a sufficiently sized bronchial tube, what with the extendable secondary set of jaws). The prehensile tail and the highly acidic blood is well known along with the creature having an exoskeleton...it's form of reproduction is parasitic but the creature is not a parasite. I believe it is a biological weapon, developed in a laboratory, in a petri dish, under a microscope, in a test tube.

For those curious, she doesn't fit. The neck is too thick, the arms aren't log enough, and the fingers and not jointed in the right places, and the hair would require her helmet to be hiding about 4 extra inches of space to be anything other than stuck to her head at all times.

Quarrians have had to basically repurpose, recycle, and figure out how to get dispirate systems to talk to eachother for the cohesion of their migrant fleet, often forced to buy ships that are of.... debateable quality. Hell yes I'd hire on quarrians. Though from a practical standpoint I'd also want a few Turians stationed on board too for the sake of ensuring any foodstuffs and or medical supplies isn't going to just one person. Granted that would also mean having some fairly substansive medical, but given the potential value add of quarrian engineers? Totally worth it. Plus, y'know. I'd be more than a little curious on how they handle interpersonall issues, sinceeven if it wouldn't work out in 'my' situation, helps to know the crew's way of doing thigns on their last posting.

I'd be hesitant to hire a quarian. Their galactic status as a shunned people for their horrible mistake, unleashing the geth, would be the least of my concerns. To care for a quarian, to have the necessary medical facility and medical knowledge, would be a financial issue. As a captain you will also be burdened with the potentiality of informing that quarian's family that they died from an allergic shock brought on by a punctured suit. A reality that wouldn't be a factor with non-quarian crewmates. However, knowing that quarians are exceptional engineers and unreasonable resourceful I'd likely hire at least one; doing my utmost to invest in my ship's medical facility and to provide extra protective material for their suit.

The appearance of Quarians should be k own, I'm sure a quick search over the Mass Effect version of the internet and anyone could find that out. There is even data entries describing porn in the Mass effect universe that even mentions Quarian porn. So it seems that the appearance of Quarians isn't some huge mystery that non-Quarians wouldn't be able to find out. Hiding things from the player that your character should or easily could know is dumb. Keeping a specific character like Tali's appearance is fine, but there should have been images of unsuited Quarians the player could find.

This was a very fun video, but I'm going to complain, all the same. I hate the idea that people don't know what Quariajs look like. It comes up at least once in possibly every sci-fi setting, from Dune, to Star Wars, and on, but while the Guild Navigators are literally always isolated, and a weird element of how the Spacing Guild actually operates, instead of the magical monsters who run it, many others aren't. What does a Jawa look like, under the hood? A Tusken, under the bandages? Has no one ever killed one, and snapped a pic? Is the medical community completely shut off from them, that they've never offered aid, or conducted an autopsy? I can appreciate that such doctors, with some decency, haven't just spread images callously, but not everyone is nice, and decent. Luke and Kenobi dealt with lots of dead Jawas; I guess they know. The Quarians are the same. I get that they do dwell in their enclosed environs, and then closed off in communities almost as much, but I just find it hard to believe no one has pictured dead Quarians, or exploited some, to answer this burning question. From the outside, I get the appreciation of the mystique, even as I whine, but in-verse people seem in the dark, and that just boggles my mind. Apart from that pointless tirade, I was entertained. As a people, the Quarians are a race I enjoy, both for the Ines we meet, and some of the social commentary, both for their own hardships, and their own mistakes. I usually prefer my ME species to have biotic potential, and I don't beluthe Quarians have been exposed to Element Zero in ways that would trigger this, even living upon so many ships that I assume have eezo drives, but of those that favor more natural abilities, and tech, over dark energy space-magic, the Quarians are great! And yes, as a ship captain, I would value having 1+ among my crew.

While Quarians may not use money to trade between themselves, they would still require "alien" money so they can trade with those aliens they encounter, so that notion makes sense.

I don’t see the romani connection. The Quarians are technologically advanced, care about hygene and are actually industrious. We don’t see any basis for any of the stereotypes that Citadel races have against them. There is literally no scummy or violent Quarian ingame.
@jenx58702 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Never thought of them that way, but you could be right. I always viewed them as the space equivalent of the Jewish race. Both well known for traveling and being outcasts, so I guess it could be either/both. The Romani would fit with the bartering, while the Jewish fits with exile. The Quarians are complex. I like a lot of the characters, but they definitely set in motion their own fate when they tried to destroy another sentient species (the Geth). Their ancestors got scared and messed up. I always make peace with them in ME3.

I dont see why I wouldn't recruit a Quarian. If they can do what they do best, I dont see why they couldnt become family. One's race doesnt define what they can or can't do.

i feel like with how smart the quarians were they would have brought humans to live with them so that they could adapt their system to be similar to ours so that they wouldnt die from a suit tear possibly. Thats one of the only things i didnt get because tali made it seem like it would be pretty easy to adapt back to their system with some time.
@bombomos2 жыл бұрын
Over time means several generations. So 200+ years depending. But it wouldnt even really work with a human. You can't just transfer immune systems. Plus they would need to be on a planet. No matter what, living in a space ship makes you weaker. Even our astronauts can't stay in the international space station for more than a few months or they get extremely weak and their body starts to deteriorate.
@mech0p2 жыл бұрын
@@bombomos To be fair they're insanely more advanced than us so they technology to do these sorts of things is way more likely in their time I mean hell they've lived in space their entire lives which as you mentioned is something we can't do so it's hard to look at it from our perspective. But I look at it like the chicken pox or even a vaccine that introduces these things to your system this way you can either fight it off better or just be completely immune. Also, I couldn't imagine it would be that hard to collect bacteria or whatever it may be from their planet and make a vaccine or slowly introduce it into their suits but hey I'm not a quarian expert so what do I know lol.

I think the best real life parallel for the Quarians would be the Roma. Both are looked down upon by other races. They don't have a real home to call their own, so they just rome endlessly.
@seannemo80762 жыл бұрын
I have a few things to say… I’ll start with a couple of issues: First, limiting families to one child wouldn’t result in a stable population, but in a shrinking one, presuming a binary reproductive system (2 sexes necessary for reproduction). Families should be encouraged to have 2 children, with the councils allowing 3 of the population becomes to small, restricting families to 1 in case I’ve overpopulation. Although I doubt that overpopulation happens often given the attrition that undoubtedly occurs due to the Pilgrimage. As for money, while Quarians may have a truly Socialist society (possible due to the insular nature of their society and the limited population), they would still need money when dealing with the rest of the galaxy. For example _maybe_ they could pay for a spacedock slip for a major refit through trade, but money would make it much easier. My last point is not a problem, but personal observation and theory: That the Quarians are responsible for their own weakened immune systems. We know that if people who are “germaphobic” have weaker immune systems due to their bodies not getting minor infections and illnesses to strengthen their immune systems. We also know that people in enclosed communities (like aboard a ship) can pass illnesses through the community rapidly. My theory is that an early Quarian ship had an illness that tore through the ship, causing everyone to use environmental suits to effectively quarantine themselves, and then thay all simply _stayed_ in those suits. The extreme sterile environments have caused the Quarian immune system, which was already weak, to degrade further. Whereas if they had _not_ quarantined themselves, their immune systems would have become _stronger,_ not weaker, due to the constant exposure to outside influences. Anyway, it was a good video, thank you. I just wanted to put in my two cents.

Your videos are always great but this one has been particularly good. I love Tali and I love the Quarrians. I don't get the one child thing though, because you half the population each generation. Two parents would need to create two children to maintain a stable population, generation after generation.
@OrangeRiver2 жыл бұрын
Based on my understanding, zero population growth is not so much based on the actual number of children but the ratio of births and deaths. That said, it's definitely a throwaway line--I can't even remember where it's said in the series. Probably during ME1. Either way, so glad you liked the video James!

It’s balanced out because of the population starts to dip, the law is relaxed. And if it begins to dip too rapidly, prospective parents are actually given incentives to uh… do their part. Then later once the population climbs again the low is reinstated.

I society can choose to not use money amongst themselves, and still have the need for money to use in trade. This would be like in a commune or cult. They don't use cash for internal trade, but do use it to buy things they cannot produce themselves.
