What do Sunderland fans think of Newcastle? A Toon fan visits the Stadium of Light to find out!

When Sunderland were playing Plymouth Argyle, I decided to travel to the Stadium of Light in order to approach Sunderland fans and ask them about what they think of the Newcastle takeover, relegation prospects and other things.
All my conversations were in good humour and only a few wouldn't speak with me, due to my support of Newcastle.
I'd like to thank the fans involved for taking part.

What a great video. I'm a Sunderland supporter and I think that healthy (respectful) banter is great because we are basically the same. I should know cos my Dad was a Mag and he was the one who respected my wishes as a 9-year-old living in East Boldon (my parents had split up) and took me to my first ever match at Roker Park, God Bless Him. He passed away 2 months ago but I'll always be grateful that he did that. Good luck to Newcastle and your amazing fans, every bit as passionate as we are. Hope we have a Derby again soon and hope it's in the Premier League. Cheers.

When I was a young man in the early 80's I travelled away with Chelsea to Sunderland at Roker Park. There was shenanigans and I got some boots wrapped around my head. We were asking for it. Fast forward decades to a few years ago (when aged 18 and 20 years respectively) my two daughters (South Essex born/bred) travelled up to Sunderland for a Rihanna concert at the Stadium of Light. I was worried because I consider them a bit naive (not so worldly-wise) and bit daft. As I feared, they got lost and confused in their travels around Sunderland, to and from the Stadium/Hotel etc. The people they encountered during their experience in Sunderland could not have been more friendly and concerned for their well-being, going out of their way to show them the way rather than simply giving directions. The upshot is, my girls to this day feel that Sunderland is the nicest, friendliest place on earth. I run a finger across the two inch scar above my right eyebrow to remember the place within my own time at that same age. 🤛 Bless the North East... I've come to believe it is the best place and best people in Britain. As a Londoner, I aim to retire in Northumberland. Can't wait. Great Video, as ever!!

My dad was a Sunderland Fan living most of his life in Newcastle as my mum was a Newcastle girl. When I was about eight he refused to take me to watch Newcastle saying he wouldn't set foot inside St James Park and it was left to my uncle to take me to the home games along with my cousin. I have to say it was all good banter when we went to visit my cousins over Sunderland way. So I can understand the passion from both sets of fans for their club and I don't care how much some fans hate each other there's nothing like a northeast derby. Newcastle my one and only club ever since I started watching football decades back. From the perspective of an overseas fan who has never stepped foot in the UK, I find the rivalry really interesting to hear and watch about! Hope it never ever gets aggressive or does it? Great content again, Eddie. Love that you constantly work on getting better at it. Still remember you had some audio issues earlier on with your interviews and in the very next one, you came back with a mic and fixed that. That is also all I hope for our team, to work on getting BETTER whatever standard of play they are/will be at! As long as EFFORT is not lacking, they can count on my support! I have watched every single game ever since the takeover. That's more games than I can remember following during Ash's ownership. I have to be honest that I didn't even know who we have as our players for more than a decade. It is different now. There is hope! Trust the work; trust the journey!

This came into my KZbin choices tonight and I enjoyed watching it. As a Sheffield Wednesday fan, who lives about 45 minutes from Hillsborough, I have been friendly with two north east lasses, neither of whom followed football. The first was from Chester-le-Street and her family were Mackems supporters, whilst the latter was from NE6 & had Toon followers. What I will say is this; football-wise, I'd love to see Magpies, Black Cats, Owls and Blades in the top flight. Social wise, both families were lovely and that epitomises the North East in general. My son and I have enjoyed several fantastic Northumberland holidays too. Enjoy your football! God bless and best wishes. Stu. ⚽

Would take some courage to visit and ask them questions - and fair play to the fans who gave their time to participate as well. Good videos mate. As a Sand Dancer, and staunch black n whiter, I’m old school in thinking, and think if you’re a Tynesider, you should be a Toon fan. Back in the fifties-before any real fan rivalry-people would alternate between watching the two teams, depending on who was at home. When Sunderland became known as ‘the Bank of England club’, fans sided with them, hoping to see the better football. So, you could say the mackems were the world’s first glory hunters!

Got a good NUFC/SAFC related story. Used to work with a good lad, big Sunderland fan, in Newcastle early 90s. Scott Sloan (ex NUFC) had his stag do in Ripon if memory serves right? Said Sunderland fan was also on the stag do. Didn't end well with SAFC fan having most of his clothes thrown out of the bus skylight along the A1 on the way home. No scrapping just alcohol induced malarkey going a bit too far! Taxi from Pilgrim Street got him back to Sunderland once we arrived back in the Toon. If I was to take anyone it would be ASM absolute pleasure to watch play however not being biased he deserves a better club to play amongst players at his level so he can shine a bit more Also an honourable mention to joelint on I don’t think enough people sing his praises if you watch him play of recent you can tell how much he is starting to contribute to the team In terms of yous staying up its a bit of a tricky one, heavily dependent on who you pick up in January I think defensive additions are an absolute must but looking at the team now you’ve got a couple stand out players amongst championship standard players. As a Sunderland fan I would love us to meet in the middle for a good old Tyne Wear derby again however at the moment for football clubs in the north east Newcastle are doing there bit with yous up in the premier league however we will have to see how the season comes along All the best for the season pal

BZ for that matey, no real surprise at the genuine dislike in some cases plain hatred of those 13 miles up the road, tribal loyalty on full display. We are on different paths personally I would like to see them eventually back up and the derbies return. Whilst the Toon is a mess it's nothing to the catastrophic demise of Sunderland all caught on Netflix, whilst we have a difficult road ahead, they have the proverbially mountain to climb.

Fair play to going to the lion's den so to speak, not sure why you'd do that to be honest, couldn't you just speak to a Sunderland podcast and save yourself the bother?! I was amazed you got as good a response as you did! I'm a Blades fan and I'd never go to Hillsborough on match day outside and say I'm a Blades fan.....etc! I am fascinated about the Mackems/Geordie rivalry got to be the most hostile in English football. Hope that both teams are in the PL as it's a derby that should be in the PL, I'd like to think the same about the Sheffield derby but that would mean Wednesday in the PL and they'd be saying they're gonna win it knowing Wednesday fans who call themselves the Massive, say no more!

I've got to say, I'm a mackem and I really couldn't care less about football, so I've never felt part of that rivalry, I love going to gigs in Newcastle and drinking there, I've never had any problems, albeit one time on the way back from York I ended up a train with the gremlins, they seemed bemused I didn't care about what they were saying about football players, I honestly didn't have a clue what they were talking about. But when your passion for a sport makes you want to be violent, then I do think that casts a huge shadow over genuine fans.

As a Sunderland dialect word in its own right ‘Mackem’ can be literally translated to mean ‘make them’ (or mack ’em for short) and although it almost certainly relates to shipbuilding - the industry for which Sunderland was primarily known - it does not fully explain why it is used for a Wearsider. One possibility is that ‘Mackem and Tackem’ in reference to Sunderland could be explained by the two principal forms of employment in 19th century Sunderland. As mentioned on our brief page about Sunderland industry, the census of 1851 showed that sailors and shipbuilders formed by far the biggest workforce in Sunderland at that time. ‘Mackems’ could quite easily be the shipbuilders who made the ships and ‘Tackems’ the sailors who took them out to sea. This seems straightforward enough but it is often claimed the ‘Tackems’ were the Tyneside shipyards that took Sunderland-built ships to have them fitted with engines in the Tyne yards. Possible of course, but not proven, and this suggestion, which seems to have later twentieth century roots does seem to have an air of superiority about it.

It's 50/50 for me if Newcastle will stay up depends who they bring in and who they offload in January definitely need a couple of CBs for me got enough going forward to score enough too stay up just need to strengthen defence (honest opinion) liked the video

I would honestly love too see Newcastle and Sunderland challenging for cups and high Premier league positions if we ever get back there lol but seriously sick of seeing the likes of Manchester and London clubs dominating our fan bases and potential are as good as anyone else at the top (Sunderland failed at every level from board to mangers and players were in league one because of very poor recruitment) Newcastle have got a chance of saving themselves from relegation if I'm eddie howe I'm looking at Cbs linguard would be a good signing too be interesting too see who Eddie brings in. @@andywright160 I agree! I’d love to see Lingard, Trippier et al come but I’d be shocked if they do. These are players wanting to play at the highest level to stay in the England plans. Tbh, these fans probably don't know any Newcastle players - the one I'd have is Saint-Maximim - What a player he is. I think Newcastle may stay up as long as they do the appropriate thing, that is, sell deadwood, use that fund and a little from the board, to buy players, and with the right business, can avoid relegation. That said, still a possibility of not getting the squad to gel well, but under Howe who likes to grind results out and had done very okay with Bournemouth despite relegation. He had indeed made them more popular. As stated, with the right business, especially the back four, can avoid relegation.
