Interesting to hear very positive Turkish views of Germans. I guess it’s the politicians and media that spoil the atmosphere. I met a lot of turks in Germany and Austria. All of them were friendly and helpful to me during my very brief stay in Europe.

Don’t care about German Turks, all they do is getting lower of the Turkey‘s reputation. they come to Turkey with the super lux BMWs or Mercedes‘ and showing them to us nor they vote for Erdoğan for Turkey but in German elections they support the left wing. They say they hate to Germans and the German Government but when they come to turkey they criticize about Akp‘s „wonderful“ works.

So all German-Turks are like that how you say it or what? we just go to turkey because we want to show the people there that we drive Mercedes BMW? We want to visit our families our for example my parents want visit there homelands nothing more and believe me there is hard work behind the vehicle.When you got a nice car and just drive normally on the streets in turkey and do nothing bad the people will be jealous and think you try to show them that you got Bmw, Mercedes.Soo silly.

@@metis9692 well you have to keep in mind that they have left a very different country. The turkey they or their family left 50 years ago doesn't exist in reality anymore, but only in their heads. So I think they probably still think in that way when going back to the modern turkey. 50 years ago Turkey was a lot poorer than it is today, hence visible signs of wealth are probably still a lot more important in their heads than in todays turkey. Also voting and praising the "strong man" makes sense when you think of the societal uncertainty and repeated military takeovers that happened in the time when most of them left. So they are voting and behaving from a point of view when turkey was still poor and in societal turmoil, not the prosperous nation it has become in the meantime. Not to excuse their behaviour, but I always find it helpful to try to look at the world through the other's eyes to understand their motivation.

I liked both videos. I noticed that the Turkish people talked a lot about the characteristics and philosophy of the German people. Whereas the other video German people talked more about the contributions of Turkish food. Wish there can be an episode 2 of Easy German where they dig deeper.

A very interesting video.Turks seem to have a very positive view of Germans. I do hope that we Germans are able to keep up that opinion.I was in Germany (Munich) recently and I am sad to say that the only youngsters that show education seem to be of Turkish origin. I don't know what happened to the original population. They seem to spoil their children up from kindergarten age. I loved to buy fruit in Turkish shops where the cashiers are friendly , always with a smile, attending their clients bilingual, changing between German and Turkish with amazing ease.

German kids are mostly too spoilt by their anti authoritarian -"buddies" parents to be able to be less selfish, well-mannered,courteous... This German authority trauma backed up a permissive mindset- which has deleterous backlashes onto education system😮 e.g:no homeworks ,kids' blossoming first with stupid creative writing assignments... Then Königkinder kids as kings become grumpy,unfriendly adults at cashier desks😢Lack of empathy,good image. Please let's send out German kids into Turkish ,Japanese families to tame them back😂

Thank you for this episode. I really enjoyed watching it. Without a doubt, there is still not enough friendly and positive communication between people. The media say: bad news is a good news. And you say: good news is what we need the most. I strongly believe that over time people are going to get closer to each other, that they will understand each other better and trust each other much more. But for this, we need more cultural exchange, more communication, more mutual understanding. And your work is providing this.

Hello from Germany! My family members came from Turkey to Germany in 1969. But they didn't come as typical guest-workers. They were students. All of them have degrees from German universities (my siblings and I are also academics). We have always been extremely well integrated into German society, because my parents have never been religious. They were influenced by the ideology of Ataturk. What I want so say is that .... when it comes to Turks, successful integration often depends on their level of education and also on the fact, whether they are religious or (instead of that) were influenced by Ataturk (which means that they behave and live "western"). In general, educated Germans and educated Turks don't have any problems with each other.

Ich glaube, als Kind haben sogut wie alle es gehasst, wenn man von den Eltern gezwungen wurde, "die Sprache der Heimat" zu lernen. Als Erwachsene waren aber sicher die meisten froh, dass sie statt Fußball zu spielen auch mal zu Hause sitzen und sich durch langweilige Bücher und Filme quälen mussten. Schönen Gruß an alle, die zwei Muttersprachen haben. Bei mir wär's Plattdeutsch gewesen, aber meine Eltern haben mich halt nicht gezwungen. ;)

We all know that many mistakes have been made on the German side and that it took a long time for German politicians to recognize that the Turks who were once brought are not guests, but fellow citizens. Well that's not a surprise. I'm a German-Turk. And the german media shows Turks specially as arabs. Examples are the Murders of muslims womans. When arabs kill their woman's because of 'religious' reasons, the German media shows them as Turks. The most famous "turkish" comedian in germany who made the most stereotypes against Turks, is an arab. Who portrays himself as Turkish. The list goes on, but mainly the germans know Turks for their religion. Which is pretty bullshit, because Turks are secular.

You are right, Turkish people are diverse. About your question, there are "east asian looking" Turks but they are not "that" common. (In Istanbul at least)

They look diverse because they are mixed. Ask them to do DNA test and they would find out that they have Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Bulgarian, Georgian, Albanian, Circassian roots. Have you ever seen light-skinned blue-eyed Turkish actor or actress on screen? He or she must definitely be mixed!

Ottoman Empire was huge back then and had people of many nationalities, your emperors or sultans married foreign women, and it is even depicted in your TV shows like Magnificent Century, your main characters and even actors have foreign background - the guy who played the Sultan is of Albanian descent and the Sultana is half-German. you guys are mixed and this is the fact, no matter how much people or government are trying to implement pride & Turkish nationalism into society.

In the 70ies my parents saw that a lot of workers from Turkey came over to our town, they thought, that they could probably get homesick, because everything was different in Germany. So they asked an Turkish/German Interpreter for companies, that sell main stream food, which can be easily imported. My parents wrote letters to these companies and imported turkish products and sold them in a tiny supermarket. Sometimes I did my homework at the office of my father and one day I realized, that some of the Turks screened movies in Turkish in a club room for free, just around the corner of my parents shop. Sometimes I went there and watched a movie there. Most of them were Bruce Lee movies. You don’t have to understand Turkish to comprehend the story of such a movie. One day they screened a movie, that had a very strong impact on me. It was Yilmaz Güney‘s „Yol“. The inhuman fate of the characters of this film, moved me very much. It was a strange situation, that after some time a few guys left the movie. I thought, because they might have go to work. When the movie was over they stood outside and had an argument with another guy and started to beat him up. I could not understand why. Later one of the guys who could speak German, told me that the movie also had something to do with the quarrel between Kurds and other Turks. It was really shocking to me that a movie can lead to such an aggressive behavior. I was told that it’s about the honor which would have been attacked and that people get violent about it. I never went there again and then 20 years later, I read the story of Hatun Sürücü in the papers, who was a victim of a honor killing in 2005. To this day I can’t understand how anybody seriously thinks, that the honor of the family can be restored by a murder. To kill somebody, regardless if the person is part of your family or not, just because she or he has a different point of view for the own life, is a poor and coward act and for me, the honor of everybody, who agrees to it can’t be lower. It comes from an attitude that is patriarchal, regarding men as superior, instead of being respectful to one another in the most elementary manner, when people disappoint or offend you, then led them go, but being violent to them reveals, that there’s no brain. It doesn’t solve the conflict to kill a person for having a different mind set. On the other hand, I have so many cool friends and coworkers with both passports (Turkish and German), we don’t care at all what others are thinking. Maybe its bc the interview done with people having no ties with Germany at all, i dont know. without traveling and having an experince, of course Germans would be undermined to “discipline”. i believe tolerance and freedom given by the society and also by the state (w/o considering religion, sex, sexual orientation, place of birth and etc.) is the definition of todays Germans.
