In 2007, I downsized from a 4bedroom 2300 sq ft house down to 405 sq ft apartment for several months due to an unexpected financial situation. We were there for 3 months. We adjusted by doing more things outside such as hiking camping and free outdoor concerts. Also trips to library and free museum days and baseball games. We made it work and have fond memories of that time, I free up in a 1000 foot 2 bedroom home with parents and 2older brothers. Would extra space and extra bedrooms have made us happier? I seriously doubt that. We were no happier in our much larger home from my very early years.

We’ve downsized each time we’ve moved and it’s made us much happier. We now live in a 73m2 apartment in a city we love and are working towards creating the life that’s perfect for us :) Thanks for sharing yo wisdom, we like listening to it 🖤

Very interesting to watch as always :) I don’t have kids but I do have a kitty between me and my husband. I always wanted a large place but I now feel content with the home we have. Decluttering has definitely helped us feel less claustrophobic!

We’re currently in the process of downsizing as a family of three, myself, husband and 3 y/o. We sold our three bedroom house (which wasn’t huge to begin with, only one living area but was on a large 750m2 block. We’re moving into a 2 bedroom apartment, we’re currently staying in a motel room until the new place is ready so getting the hang of being in a smaller space, the new place will probably feel spacious compared to this. We sold/gave away/threw out a heap of stuff that we no longer needed or will have space for and it felt so cleansing, cathartic even.

I have a 1,300 sq ft home and when I thought about down sizing in home size we my family and I put post it notes everywhere we used and the path traveled to see how much room we really use it was eye opening. We went and visited a tiny home perfect for us, we plan to have built. Now the hard part . How do we really know what things hold value enough to enter the new space? being that we will be living in 400 sq ft and every inch matters.

Why not do a packing party before you move? You'll get to see what you actually use in your daily life. You'll have a better idea of what to keep and get rid of.

Firstly what are the essential items you use regularly? Which items could you do without? And of course what is special to you, holds sentimental value and just can’t bear to part with. I started by imagining my house on fire... what would I grab first (I narrowed it down to literally just one archive box of important docs and my external HDDs with my photos and music on one and back up of the computer on the other, basically stuff that insurance can’t replace), then what would i be most sad to lose (that was mostly items with sentimental value and again irreplaceable when it comes to insurance) and what would be the things I would replace first (bed, fridge, sofa, kettle, etc)?

Thanks for answering my question about downsizing. What you said aligns with your previous messages and advice, which makes sense. The one specific question I wanted to get your thoughts on though was how to deal with moving out of the area you're in when you have a large home (moving schools etc) to find the home that you like but is smaller vs. moving into a smaller home in the location you love, but the house is outdated and not really what you or your family desire? The smaller houses are all older and need work and are way overpriced for what you get... but I guess you're paying for the location. So the real question is what's your take on downsizing when your target location has this type of makeup?

loving these daily updates, such succint answers to important questions on the minimalism journey that other vids might waffle for an hour over. Thanks bro. My question would be: I enjoy lots of hobbies, so have acquired multiple sets of equipment for these hobbies. To the point where I don't have any more space to do them. Do you have any tips for how to choose what gives me the most value and purpose?!

That absolutely astounds me about the house size in America being 4500sq ft. That’s 5 times bigger than our house 😮 (family of four in New Zealand).

Hi Joshua! I've been a minimalist for over 2 years now and i've conquered most aspects of my life with this mindset and purpose. But i am having a lot of trouble quitting a very unhealthy and stresfull job because its so hard without a back up plan. So my question is: what is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to let go of a dreadful job that pays the bills in order to have a better life?

My question ~ I hear these words ‘I’m a minimalist’ from other people. Do you recommend calling or proclaiming your a minimalist from the start or do you say nothing? An extension from the last question regarding children our 10 yr old love to collect from rocks, leaves etc how do I encourage him to only limit a few not an entire bucket load? This seems to stress me out.

Not to mention debt!!!! Debt to GET that square footage...just cuz you have the money to use it on sq ftg doesn't mean you HAVE to...if it's gonna get you in debt...that's not simplifying.
