Spending 5,000 usd per month in the philippines is ridiculous and probably a waste of money. I live a very comfortable life right now and I only spend 1,200usd per month. That's eating out 3x a day, getting coffee 2x a day. Granted, I'm a local, but 3,000 usd is already overkill as it is, 5,000 wouldn't give you much else, unless you wanna fine dine 3 meals a day, and permanently live in the best hotels

I live here has retired military and civil service. Collect SSN and 100 % disability. So I have some experience on this. You can live very very well just on military retirement and disability. You go to same places lawyers and doctors go to. Stay in 5 star hotels. The upper class locals just kind of look at you with distain. I found it better to live in country side and go to BGC and Makati once you get bored. Living there is a bit much if you older.

If I stopped working today, and retire beginning next year and assuming I can already withdraw - $3K a month is what I'll receive based on how it computes. This is broken down into: - 1.3K from 401K - 0.3K from IRA - 1.4K from SS It will just go up from here. My target is go get this up to $3.5K because tax will probably get the extra $500K anyway, bringing me back to the $3K but this time a net.

Great Video. I'm subbed and have been watching a while. Here's a suggestion for another video. I'm a 60 year old male, retired and planning to use BGC as a base to travel Asia and relax about 6+ months per year. In the past, I have lived in Korea, Japan and the Philippines for a total of about 10 years, so I am fairly familiar with life in the PI. I do not plan to live there full time, so renting a condo on an annual basis may not make sense, but then again, an annual lease may be cheaper than 5-7 months of condo rental. Please consider a video that contrast an annual lease in BGC versus 6 months of monthly condo rent, versus living in a hotel (if there are any long term good hotel deals). Does renting by the month usually include utilities/internet and all the condo amenities such as the gym? Furnished versus unfurnished? Do condo buildings in BGC that are 5+ years old start to become less attractive due to lack of upkeep, management, less security and newer building being more attractive due to newer features, etc. (I know this happens in Bangkok)? What are the possibilities of living in a hotel? I know the price may initially seem high, but are the utilities and breakfast or club room (evening drinks and hors d' oeuvres) included? Are there different/unique visa considerations for someone who signs a one year lease? My budget would probably be $2500-3000+ depending on what's included. Thanks, keep up the great work.

A better advice would be work, save and invest for 30 years in America. Have your kids finish college in America, once they have their own family then you can move to the philippines and live off your investment of 8m(invested maximum in 401k and roth ira every year for 30 years in sp500 and schd) pulling out only 320k dollars a year(4%) which means it will never run out until you die. This way you can have multiple house maids, personal assistants, driver and couple of body guards. By this time, you should also own paid off house in america which you can sell and buy acres of land and mansion. Only go back to america for annual health check ups and tax returns or family emergencies. You can also help your filipino communities by building schools, churches and stores. If you move there right now, it will be hard for you to progress in life unless you keep investing in American market.

With the recent airline pilot union contracts. A senior airline pilot (captain with 10+ years) with a U.S. Major carrier (Delta, American, United, Alaska) earns in the high $400K to low $500K range. A young first officer who recently got off probation earns about $200K. These are ballpark figures. Pay can vary based on aircraft and routes flown due to hours worked, amount of open time you pick up or type/amount of reserve time you sit. Good pay, but you run the risk of layoffs due to a changing economy. Also spend much time away from home/family and work a tough schedule with long hours/night/shift work.

Can’t compare a cheap school vs a top of the line University…even with a lot of cash,they won’t accept a student …many time or most of the time,cash and best grades it’s not the only thing to accept a new student…goes one on one too,plus grades plus money or even for free sometimes…not a single rule …very complicated.

Pay attention to the key metric he used: 56 to 1 peso. It is highly unlkely that ratio remains that high over the next 10 years. If it goes to 25 to 1 and you are living on SS, everything you are paying for doubles. If the US dollar gets replaced as the reserve currency of the world, it will take a steep drop. Ex pats really need to protect themselves from a dollar shock by finding a way to make some local income in pesos. Maybe SE can do a video on that

If, if, if.... BS fear mongering, without any basis in historical reality. Since 2000, the PHP - USD exchange rate has fluctuated from a low of 42.22 to the current high of 56. While a (highly improbable) 25% drop would not be fun, it would also not financially incapacitate most fiscally responsible expats. I am betting on no worse than that for the next quarter century, after which it will likely no longer be my concern, or that of many of the expats commenting here. Social Security annual increases and intelligent investing of saving can also hedge currency exchange rate fluctuations.

For your next videos: How to be “savvy” when buying a car / big bike / scooter etc. in the Philippines 😊
@justsmy56778 ай бұрын
I would be savvy and NEVER drive. Hire a driver. If you have a wreck in the PI and injure or kill a Filipino you may very well find yourself in jail or getting sued for a huge sum. That is like playing an "away" game with "away" refs! You could spend 6-12 months in jail just waiting on the charges to be dropped.
@SirMountainpass8 ай бұрын
@@justsmy5677 Thank you for sharing - that’s certainly an option for the less than extremely experienced who have NOT driven / raced cars & motorbikes in many countries around the globe 😅✌️🏁
@justsmy56778 ай бұрын
@@SirMountainpass - If they know you have a racing background, then you have a wreck (dog runs out in front of you, people drying rice in the road), they will accuse you of driving like a race car drive in a residential area. It's been a few years, but if I needed a car for a day, I would hire an airconditioned taxi (that I rode in and checked out a day or two prior) for the day for about 1000 pesos/$20, which included gas. I'm sure prices have gone up and it is cheaper if a Filipino negotiates the deal for you. Cheers
@MoralHazard-g1e8 ай бұрын
@@SirMountainpass It's not about you. It's about the trike driver who does an immediate u-turn from the far-right lane without signaling or looking. The motorcyclist who decides to take a shortcut by driving into oncoming lane. Or the truck driver who wants to drive at night without any lights, or the urban planner who builds a road with a random tree in the middle of a lane. Your experience don't mean squat in that environment.
