Quick clarification: My school (UTHSC) does all of the purchasing of these kits. We pay for them, and we receive them in boxes all taped up. On the first day of the semester, we all go to a lecture hall on campus to go through our box and make sure that everything on the list is in there. That means we don't actually research all these materials and pick them out ourselves. We would have no idea what to get lol! All we do is pay and pick them up!

Interesting to see how other schools do things differently. At my dental school, we "checked out" equipment for the year and turned it all in at the end. Looks like you'll be keeping all your equipment!

I kind of wish we just rented it because I imagine there will be many things in these kits I won’t use in private practice but we’ll see! A good example is my hand pieces which are electric while the office I plan to practice in has air driven handpieces. It’s awesome to get all this stuff though because it just continue to remind me that I’m really becoming a dentist one step at a time!

Handpiece that cost a couple thousand- what? The electric GENTLEpower LUX 7LP slow speed goes for like up to $450 and the 6500b GentleSilence go for like $300-$500... I am wondering who is spending more than that when that is what I see dentists using these as their main workhorse.

Thanks for the comments! This is an older video of mine and it is entirely possible that I misspoke on some of the prices! I will say we use the Brassler Forza handpieces which I believe can reach the $1000 mark in price and we have a Valo Cordless LED Curing Light which I have found online for $1700 (which is BS because it is not worth that much). We don’t get to choose what we buy! Our school chooses all of these products for us and then we just pay for them. When I get into my practice as a dentist I will be making plenty of videos on the dental supplies and instruments we are using in the practice. I look forward to that!

Holy hell , seeing this makes me appreciate my university, ( 6th year dental medicine ) we didn't have to buy 90% of this stuff as it was provided by the university, now i get it why ppl say uni is expensive in the states.
@stephenraydentist
@stephenraydentist 3 жыл бұрын
Very expensive my friend. We will take all of this with us when we graduate to get a jump start on all of the supplies we'll need in our practices but it sure is a lot. And they set it up for us so we cant shop for cheaper options (honestly probably a good thing though because I wouldn't know where the best place to get triad was for example)

@@stephenraydentist yea but those things a just a water drop in an ocean when it comes to a full practice, but do stress the budget of a student a lot , in my country there are no student loans like in the USA , so your patents need to have the money cash.

Everything is expensive in the states. We really need universal dental care. So many people (like me) neglect going to the dentist every year because we can’t afford it. Even w/ insurance it can be really expensive to get work done. Too bad the gov’t doesn’t care about the voters and what they really need. 😒
@stephenraydentist

Completely understandable and an issue that absolutely should be addressed. On the other hand, there are plenty of students like myself and classmates who will come out of school with hundreds of thousands in debt and without a guarantee that we can make the money back. Lots of young dentists have a really hard time finding good work that can help pay back their loans. Some think all dentists are greedy and make truck loads of money but that certainly is not the case in our day. I have multiple young dentist friends who can attest to that. It’s definitely a difficult line to walk! Have you checked out corporate dentistry or tried a dental school near you? Those locations tend to have much more affordable options!

Hey man, great content. I'm currently wondering -- let's say you don't want that $1500 curing light and find a much cheaper one that does the same job. Is it allowed for you to sell that one and use what you would prefer? How strict are they? Thanks !
@stephenraydentist
@stephenraydentist 3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question!! Thanks for asking! I haven’t heard of people doing this even though it’s a really good idea. I think it would depend on the instrument. For example, our hand pieces are specific to the motors they have in our lab so unless we somehow bought used brassler handpieces or something I’m not sure that we’d be able to use them. I think the curing light may be exempt from that issue, however. We do purchase all of this and it’s all ours so technically I would think we could do whatever we wanted. As long as we could still do the work in the lab and clinic! Thanks for the comment!

For educational purposes I am wondering the same thing. For a dental office that uses the light 100 times a day- it might make sense- but the light is no different out of a more affordable unit. It is about durability and ergonomics. I guess there is an idea of setting people up with the tools they need... but this seems extravagant

Not a stupid question by any means!! That’s actually a great question and I appreciate your comment! Yes we can. Since we purchase all of our equipment, we will be able to bring it with us into the next steps of our careers!

The fact that you had to pay $5000 for your materials and the university didn't provide anything is outrageous and it makes me quite sad. Such a discrepancy between the American medical school and (Eastern) European medical school regarding their own students' well-being, like what can a low income student do if they don't have the money to pay up?
@stephenraydentist
@stephenraydentist 3 жыл бұрын
Well so we all take out loans for all of this. The $5000 for this dental kit didnt come out of my pocket by any means. It's just the way it is here. Dental school has gotten outrageously expensive, however. When my father went through dental school at the same school I'm currently attending, he did it all in 3 years for under $10k. When all is said and done, I will have spent about $300k for my 4-year dental education. I will have plenty of loans to pay back. Tuition is definitely a problem here I'll say, but there is still a lot of opportunity to do well for oneself in the United States. Many young dentists find their way to rural areas of our country and make $200k-$300k a year which really helps pay back those loans! Thanks for the comment!

@@stephenraydentist But a loan means you have to pay more than the 5K. Some of the items make total sense- but others seem like they are taking advantage knowing this
