If anyone reading this is nervous, anxious and/or scared. So was I and so we're most people. Trust me when I say this. DO IT. If you are thinking about doing it, DO IT. It is the one of the best choices I've ever made. These are not ego driven killers. BJJ practitioners are some of the most compassionate and understanding people you will ever meet. There is nothing to be scared of. Do it, you will not regret it.

My school doesn’t have any beginner classes. It’s just “all levels classes”. I remember my first day I just jumped straight in to break falls and front/back rolls while we were doing the warm ups. Then during drills it was covering de la riva guard and sweep. I was a little overwhelmed but I’ve been going for 2 months now and it’s been pretty awesome.

My friend has asked me to go to a BJJ beginner class with him. I have massive anxiety about this because my cardio is practically non existent. I’m overweight (but not massively, I’m skinny fat verging on fat lol) and have never been able to run/ do any exercise above standard cycling / walking. I have always felt in my head that my heart etc can’t handle doing running or something strenuous like that. It’s probably more something I’ve built up in my head but It worries me. Watching this I’ll be honest I feel like I’d really struggle just doing the warm up let alone the actual rolling and drills etc which look exhausting. I’m absolutely convinced I’d be gasping for breath after the warm up and panic. Any advice would be massively appreciated here. I know people always say just do it but is there a limit to that? Should I sort my cardio first?

What’s the best martial art for striking and like takedown/submissions, or would that be from just different kinds of martial arts.
@chadsteel3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion. I like boxing and kickboxing for striking. Take downs would be wrestling and a bit of judo. The best for submissions would be bjj. Based on my limited experience. But try it all and see what works for you. I'm just a huge bjj fan.
@mydude3483 жыл бұрын
MMA involves all 3 - however the very best often have backgrounds in boxing, kickboxing, judo, jujitsu, certain forms of karate, Muay Thai, and wrestling (maybe some Taekwondo as well). Tbh, boxing, judo, and wresting have a little bit more risk than the others - with pretty much every combat sport having some danger. Therefore, if you wanna do a strike sport I would suggest going for Muay Thai because it’s widely considered the best - however - note that at high-levels you’ll burn a lot of calories so you’ll have to work to not degrade your lean muscle. Finally, choose whether you’ll go competitive or not - although sparring here and there is normal - think hard before going full comp.

so I do MMA and I've done striking my whole life, I'm a black belt in Taekwondo, and I've been doing MMA for the past two years, I have done jujitsu before (one class ages ago) and I did one yesterday and I loved it! I don't know why I didn't love it ages ago but I had so much fun and I'm a very quick learner so it's very helpful for BJJ. For the second class I've ever been to we were doing some advanced things since it wasn't actually a beginners class but I still managed to do everything almost first shot, I impressed my trainer a lot because every time he came over to check on how I'm going I saw his eyes widen in shock that I was doing it almost perfectly lol. I did mess up a bunch but I pretty much got all the holds and stuff down and I loved the feeling that I was good at something since I haven't felt that in a long time and it was so chill and I cant wait till the next class.

I am looking to get into BJJ but this is where I'm confused. You roll for 3-5 minutes....with what techniques? You learn a technique and rep it out but....how are you defending, transitioning, etc? You don't know anything. This is where I am confused as to how a beginner can even begin to roll if he only knows 1 or 2 very basic locks. What is the other guy doing, just 1 untrained guy going for a submission and the other untrained guy struggling how an untrained person would struggle?
@chadsteel3 жыл бұрын
First off definitely go do a free trial class I think you would love it. You roll for 3-5 minutes at the end of class. The first 30-45 mins is spent learning submissions, escapes, transitions, takedowns and more. If it's your first class you might only know one thing that you just learned. If you have done 10 classes maybe you have 10 things you can use. After 100 classes you have 100 techniques. Much like a chef you need to learn one recipe at a time and build from there. The more you train the more you will learn. I love it because it is the thinking mans martial art. The only way to really experience this is to do it. I hope this helps mate.

It's a frank question. How do you get the attacker to the ground?He has to 'agree' to be lie down first? Newbie to the whole martial arts stuff - Looking for a self-defence class against bigger sized opponents.
@joeridestrijcker44511 ай бұрын
Good question; in most fights or altercations you'd start from a standing position and avoid going to the ground as long as possible (falling down hurts and it's very difficult to defend against other people standing around you while you're rolling around with one of them); after a take-down, you're probably both on the ground. Apparently in many of these BJJ classes (correct me if I'm wrong!) they just sit down on the ground and climb on top of each other to practise locks and chokes

Flaming it’s not that simple really like the instructors have a big roll in how it is so good dojo good fun no guarantee on belts for when you’ll get them is a good sign taekwondo is fun mostly personally I was just bad at patterns search up tiger 1 white belt to see what patterns are also it’s not the best for self defence(still good) but it helps and is great for fitness so I’d say give it a go normally they’ll offer one free lesson so try it and tell me how it went. The only reason for first comment was because I’ve done no sparring over the year which was annoying but covid caused it.

Flaming yea very odd no free trial the only real negative about bjj is if your fighting 2 people. apart from that it’s way better then taekwondo for self defence I’m also going to start bjj in a few weeks let me know how it went.

It’s cool bros, just avoid the eye contact when you roll up close and you’ll be cool. Okay

If it's your first time the instructor will most likely put you with a friendly more experienced partner who can take better care of you. You don't have anything to worry about

no one is going to look at you funny. Everyone was a begginer once and everyone is there to get better and improve.

It's kinda strange there's no this japanese ritual, no bows and stuff like this even if you guys are wearing traditional japanese training outfits. I wonder how BJJ class in Japan looks like. :)

This isn’t Japanese? It’s Brazilian, hence the B in BJJ

Will it be hard to a person who have a bad suppleness😂
@chadsteel4 жыл бұрын
I think it can be difficult but it shouldn't stop you from trying it, getting better and getting more flexibile. I traing with some really big guys who can't even touch their toes. The best thing that flexibility gives you is less chance of injury and you are able to get into and out of situations more fluidly. Definitely go and try it though because it is an amazing sport!
@sgt74 жыл бұрын
Hi I'm 43 and have mild fibromyalgia. Basically, this means I have no suppleness and get injuried easier than most. I started training Jiu Jitsu a few months ago. If you are similar to me, I would recommend starting by only training once a week to give you a chance to recover. When your suppleness increases after maybe 6 weeks you could try twice a week an so on. Also, it is also a good idea to just get private lessons for your first 8 lessons. This will allow the instructor to tailor the class around your weaknesses. After several months you should have no problem with intense regular training. Just start off easy. Avoid moves that strain you too much. With time you will be able for them.

I have a gracie academy where I live and I am interested, but I have to ask is it mandatory to bow down in jiu jitsu? because I am Muslim and I bow down to no man
@ajth72213 жыл бұрын
Im a muslim too but in jiu jitsu you both bow down in respect for each other not only one bowing down for another one who thinks he is superior . Bowing down in jiu jitsu is just like saying salamou alaykom in our religion so respect them by respecting their culture
@chadsteel3 жыл бұрын
We have a brief bow at the start and end of the class. But it doesn't seem compulsory. I'm sure most schools wouldn't force you to do it if you asked them politely. Just check before you start training.
