Hi. I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm currently trying to figure out if I want to go into the field. I'd like to study sex related differences in the brain, specifically when those happen, how are queer people's brains different, and how did the brain change during hormone therapy. But I'm not sure how much of my own research I'd get to do versus what a university would mandate I'd do. And I've hurdle that I have I'd that I've already gotten a bachelor's in public relations so getting the prerequisite undergrad background to qualify for grad school in the field seems a little daunting.

Hello. I'm from middle east of asia.and I'm 13 years old Since I was a kid I have always imagined myself as a doctor in future. So I decided to read books more relevant to becoming a doctor;books like on becoming a doctor, the history of nursing, medical dictionary, the doctor' heart cure, the good doctor and so on. I have earned two " applied anatomy of the locomotor system " certification related to anatomy field and one certification bout neuroscience from edx and udemy site online courses and currently I am attending the neuroscience reconstructed :genetics and development course on edx and at the same time I am very fond of learning German language, because that can help me to become an expert in reading medical articles from German. I dropped out from my school because school could harm and delay my time to reach my goals as I planned for. But unfortunately never have I ever had the opportunity to extend my career in universities or meeting excellent and experts to guide me through this journey of mine .therefore I don't know what way should i take to create my destiny as I have always imagined. Can you help me out with this problem please 🙏 😔

Which country do you belong to.? From which part of middle East? You need to complete your School first. Without School grad University doesn't allow you to enroll in a medical degree program.? You have to go with Education board exam.

Oh my god yes😂 I’ve been kinda hung up on sex differences since! I met an older PI recently who doesn’t think women should be allowed to work with mice because our cycles will throw them off and you bet I brought that up😂

I accidentally browsed through your video while searching for head transplant possibilities. I liked couple of ethical points that you raised in that video however I don't agree with all the points. Let me tell you about myself that I don't have any backgrounds around science or the academics. Though I just like and appreciate videos about science 😁

THANK YOU!!! This is wildly helpful. I also love the term "Steminist". First time I've heard that. Also, thank you for the bit about volunteering in labs. That's also very helpful. Do you know what that entails? Is it like having a job where you're there every Tuesday and Thursday for a set number of hours? Also, I'm on a self-directed study course in preparation of going back to school, since I took some time away. Do you think there's any possibility of getting to volunteer in a lab without actually technically being a student at that University?

Hi Morgan! Just discovered your channel and it's awesome! You've given a pretty clear path for someone who is doing their undergraduate degree to become a researcher, but do you have any advice for some of us who have finished their undergrads with no research experience, have gone on to work for a few years (in something mostly unrelated and super boring) and who want to switch into research in something like computational neuroscience?
@danielg39243 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of scared of volunteering for free given that I need to eat and I don't think I have the street smarts to be homeless
@AskANeuroscientist2 жыл бұрын
Hi! That's totally valid and honestly I hate how much getting research experience relies on volunteering. There are a lot of undergrads who can't afford to volunteer either because they're working and taking classes full time! But if you've already graduated and hold a bachelors degree (doesn't matter what it's in) I really recommend applying for a research technician job in a lab! I have a video on it further down on my channel, but it's a paid job in a lab that usually requires little to no research experience! It usually pays around $30-40K a year, which isn't a ton but it's better than minimum wage. So that can get you your initial research experience and from there (if you're in the US), you can apply to Ph.D. programs. Not all Ph.D. programs pay, but most neuroscience ones will pay around $30K a year and will also pay your tuition. Hope that helps!
