The bass sound's with different notes because this song is on DGCF tuning not the standard EADG, so this man is a little bit ignorant in my opinion

Never thought of that, but as a bass player myself its obvious that they don't use the album track of the bass since some notes don't sound the same on the live track. I can't see anything suspicious. That some people cant stand backing tracks one has to live with I guess, but nowadays almost everyone does so he must be very upset most of the time I guess.

There is no way the bass player is playing those notes? Well, there's no way he's that blinkered, ignorant or just plain wrong, yet here it is on video for all to see. I mean, it's one thing to not like a band or their music...nothing wrong with that. But to accuse them of not playing their instruments live when they absolutely, positively, most certainly can, do, and are... well, that's more than a couple of steps beyond acceptable.

Thank you for your supports for the band. I'm a Japanese and not good at English, so maybe I can't understand exact nuances about what Mr.Paltrowitz says. Anyone can talk free about his preference, but his comments about fami's playing is totally unacceptable. His words insult not only fami and the band but all the stuffs behind the stage and all fans at the live venue (including me). Post- production? Talking about mixing and mastering? Of course, I never say the sound of this video is exactly the same what I heard at the venue, but it only shows how good Japanese recording engineers, and fine job of Finnvox studio as always. Many fans know the band's pride as "The Live Band" and their tremendous efforts on pre-production. Practices and sessions hours and days, rehearsals and rearrangement repeatedly. I don't mind his comment or taste about backing tracks but, witnessed three times in different venues they performed this song, as a Japanese, I highly request to correct Mr. Paltrowitz's misunderstanding about their live performance.

High bar set there by Darren. "Musical crimes", I don't know. In my view, the "crime" only happens if the performer is concealing the fact that a backing track or other enhancements are used. Lovebites doesn't hide the fact that they are using a backingtrack for various keyboard lines. These are for the most part still played and recorded by Miyako, and the add a colour to their live performances that they apparently feel they need. And Miyako does these parts better than most artists out there, I'd venture. But to each their own...

Lovebites are real musicians and a real band. They can be viewed "under a magnifying glass", no deception. And there are all the possibilities for this - a rich selection of studio and concert releases. Lovebites six full concert blu-ray (Battle in the East 2018, Daughters of the Dawn 2019, Five of a Kind 2020, Awake Again 2020, Heavy Metal Never Dies 2021, Knockin' At Heaven's Gate 2023) and dvd performances at Wacken Open Air. In addition, a blu-ray was released with all ten music videos (now there are twelve). Everything with excellent video and sound quality can be viewed in detail on a large 4K screen and listened to on very good equipment, they only benefit from this. A delight for the eyes and ears. I must say that Lovebites' concert releases in blu-ray version are among the best in quality in the music industry in the world today. The same can be said about the sound quality on studio albums. As for the additional instruments in Lovebites music both in the studio and on stage. I think it's Miyako's contribution. And that's what makes Lovebites' music epic. There are a lot of great rock and metal bands in Japan with very good musicians. But in terms of epicness, none of them even comes close to Lovebites. Their creativity is not just composing and performing songs. They create real music. Lovebites are comparable to giants like Dream Theater. All their studio releases of the first line-up (3LP and 4EP) are already very good, at the highest world level. But the new, just released, fourth album is something else. It's a challenge, a bid for greatness. I don't think there is a group that can do something like that right now.

Accusing someone of Miming their part is serious business. Milli Vanilli have become nothing more than a meme. You have had guests with a lot more class than this guy. His only evidence was ''I am a bass player''. And how many people have paid to watch this guy perform? Even if he really believed Fami was using a backing track, he should have stepped back and gathered evidence and reviewed it. Just throwing it out there like that on a first listen is reckless and arrogant. Then he conflated this with having a backing track for keys or electronics. Any one even remotely close to the music industry knows that this is extremely common, not a sin. Conflating the two is lazy and foolish. The Party Like a Rockstar Podcast has always had class. The question is how will you handle the rare occasion when one of your guests fails to be respectful and classy. He is entitled to his opinion. If his opinion makes him look foolish, someone ought to inform him that he has been offensive.

I don't mind Lovebites being criticized for having too long guitar solos finding them boring or about their songwriting, or that it is difficult to understand the vocals, or even regarding their "stage costume", but accusing them of not playing live is absurd and is totally off point. I've been playing guitar for 35 years as an amateur and I can't see WTF he's talking about as far as Fami playing "impossible notes". She does have an unorthodox way of playing with how she slaps in some sections, which really sticks out when you compare her playing "Hammer Of Wrath" first bass solo with Miho's, but it doesn't take a musical conductor to tell they all play live. I think this is a case where once he saw their look he had it in his head that LB was some manufactured act so when he saw something that didn't quite compute, he automatically went to "oh this is fake" instead of considering that it might be a technique he's not used to. He can't even wrap his head around the possibility of a backing track for the keyboards, and why Joel didn't bring this up is also a mystery.

There is a group of "purists" out there who think every note in a live performance needs to be played by someone on stage. The ability to play WITH a backing track is far more difficult as the band has to follow the click track perfectly. As for the sound sync to the video, I rarely see a live recording perfectly synced to what is being played. There is almost always some delay. He is watching 5 of the best musicians on the planet and criticizes some minor backing that was played by Miyako? Unbelievable. Those bands from back in the 70s and 80s WOULD have used the technology if it were available. And this is from a guy who grew up in the 60s listening to Yes, ELP, and Procol Harum. Miyako loves to play the guitar with Midori. So she records some of the piano/keyboard parts and uses them as a backing track during the shows. She plays the piano during the shows as well. They could simplify the compositions, but then the songs wouldn't be as harmonically rich and dense. I enjoy all the layers. If they added another band member, then they would have to split the revenue 6-ways instead of 5-ways. Many reasons to do what they do. Wolfpack is totally fine with everything they do. There are backing tracks throughout most of their tracks, just like with a lot of other bands. A lot of their tracks have keyboards go throughout the whole thing, especially the Mao ones. I have absolutely no problems with it, it's just part of music nowadays, but I can see why people who want to only hear live audio do. I just don't think that will work for most bands (especially in Japan) with the huge amount of poduction they put on most of their music (including live Blu-rays). From my experience most Japanese bands have either extremely polished live blu-rays with tons of post-production (Lovebites, Band-Maid, Unlucky Morpheus, Trident, ...) or they are very small bands that self-produce DVD-R's with video on it that sometimes even has a logo of the trial software they use on it because of the lack of money (I own one of these, it might have been Rie a.k.a. Suzaku, I don't remember). I am sure there is a middle ground for some bands, but most of the Blu-rays I have seen are extremely polished to the point that some of them don't sound super live any more. They sound great from an audio perspective, but as someone who loves raw audio, it doesn't always sound super live. Bands are pretty good nowadays in trying to mix it up so you get something from both styles though. I haven't received my copy of the newest Lovebites Blu-ray yet, so I can't say for sure how this one is produced, but going from the previous ones it's probably pretty polished after the fact (again nothing wrong with that imo). One of the bands that I can think of that do play live without backing tracks are Otoboke Beaver, but you can't really compare raw "sloppy" hardcore punk with highly produced power metal. Both Mao and Miyako put a LOT of keyboard parts in Lovebites music, so without a keyboard player it will jut always be clear that there is a backing track. I love both styles of live audio although I probably prefer raw audio with tiny mistakes over cleaned up audio (although there was a tiny mistake in one of the guitar parts in this one), but it doesn't necessarily work for all bands and styles and that's ok.

@@rolandkarlsson7072 It's like we watched a different video, I don't remember derogatory names. He actually said he liked the music, just that he prefers recordings to sound live and bands not playing without backing tracks. Both can be true. Again, I love raw sounding music without too much extra stuff, but I am not convinced it would work as well for them with the amount of keyboard tracks they have in their songs. I can see why what he said comes over as negative as a lot of the comments here seem to take it, but I honestly had the feeling he enjoyed the music just not the live recording. And that's just a subjective thing, although I do think you will have to try hard to find bands that play completely live without backing tracksand other production nowadays (again some punk bands do, but I don't know that many others do). It's all personal preference, there are full festivals that forbid bands to use backing tracks. I do think the people who go that extreme take it way too far, but it's their preference so who am I to tell them it's "wrong".

Thanks Joel…keep plugging the band As many know I saw this performance, from the second row (1 1/2 row in reality). As a person who worships Asami-san, having her gaze down at me (it was ME, honest) it was the only place to stand. But when the show was released I realised that most of it passed over my head…literally. For example I saw Harupi 4 times…entering and leaving the stage. I saw Fami-san and Midori-san a few times (Fami-san was right above me for the shining moments such as this, Stand and Deliver and Hammer of Wrath. I got the odd glimpse of Miyako-san, but didn’t know she’d moved to the piano for her solo piece until it started. I didn’t realise that the light show was spectacular. And though I knew what I was hearing was musical perfection, I wasn’t hearing it as perfectly as I will on speakers or headphones. Last night I saw the Sapporo leg of the JD tour, from the back of what was a much smaller venue (500 people). I’m telling you in total honesty that what I witnessed last night did two things. Firstly, it confirmed that what I heard in Rappongi *was* musical excellence, because I could hear everything so much more clearly. But secondly, it left me actually trembling at the end of the show. Really. I have never, in 50 years of live gigs heard and experienced such a complete performance as I did last night. M&M were…M&M…yet better than this show. Haruna-san was just f**king ridiculous. How she isn’t on a stretcher at the end of these shows defies modern medicine. And Fami-san. What a transformation. I was watching only her 5th live performance with the band, and wow, what a stage presence. Added to the inevitable beaming smile there were “oh lion” gestures, moving around the stage at will, utterly confident and playing her heart out. And there were lots of moments when there was a guitar trio. She muscled in (presence wise) on several M&M duets. Fantastic. But I’ve saved the best for last (well, last but one) Asami-san. What a voice. What a goddamned voice. They played at least 7 JD numbers and as we know, she stretched herself vocally on that album. Well, er, no, she actually didn’t. She hit and held every note, sang “power metal” (I don’t like that phrase but many seem to so I used a description you can relate to). Ronnie James Dio and Asami-san share the same date of birth. They also share the same level of talent. As for stage presence…only the late, and greatly missed Freddie Mercury can be mentioned in the same breath. She NEVER stopped. If she wasn’t singing, she was waving, individually, to probably half the audience. And one scene I will never forget. During an M&M harmonisation the crowd was, naturally, transfixed. Transfixed means not punching the air or chanting. Asami was taking a much needed drink opportunity. She put down her bottle (facing Haruna-san) walked to just behind Miyako-san who was facing Midori-san, both dual soloing. Raised her left hand and began punching the air. When the crowd were obediently doing as they were told, she went back to the drums and nonchalantly continued her drink. Here is the last remark. The standard of musicianship on that stage last night renders KOHG as the prelude. The warm up. If they record one of these shows it will dwarf everything before it. Truthfully. It was absolutely magnificent. Note for the critic. Lovebites uses a backing track for the symphonic stuff only. They have WAAAAY too much class to mime. Fact.

In this case, the accusation of the use of backing tracks is a bad set of ears and pretty much an insult to Lovebites with an accusation he has no proof of. Actually, he's the first that has gone down that path. I'm guessing Darren can't comprehend that metal can be played at virtuoso level.

I have noticed several old heads lately that have a really difficult time coming to terms with backing tracks. Backing tracks are now an industry standard whether they like it or not. I don't think you will find any touring band that does not incorporate them into their shows in some fashion. Whether it be for extra instrumentation or additional vocal layers or even full-blown choral background vocals, everyone is using them. Are there some bands using them to cover up their inability to perform...absolutely. This is especially common for the much older bands from the 70's and 80's... especially vocally. Unless you train like an Olympic athlete vocally, age will rob you of your abilities, especially in the higher registers. But young bands like Lovebites have had no degradation of their ability to play or sing. The whole backing track conversation is really about innovation and leaps forward in technology. The main culprit is over-production of bands in the studio. This really became a thing in the 1980's when everything went to digital mastering. A good example of this was Def Leppard. I saw them on their "On Through the Night" tour as well as the "High and Dry" tour. They were exceptionally good on those tours. When they recorded "Pyromania," Mutt Lange came in and over-produced them. There were layered vocals on that album that the band was not going to able to reproduce live as not all members of the band could sing. I saw them on that tour, and though they were still good, the new songs sounded rather hollow without the vocal layering. I thought this was a mistake on the producer's part. Yes, over-production makes for an incredible album, but reproducing that live on stage is another matter entirely. The best sounding bands live were the ones who were not being over-produces and could pull off live exactly what was on the album. 80's bands like the Scorpions, Judas Priest and Twisted Sister come to mind as bands that sounded exactly like they did on their albums. In today's music industry, almost everybody is over-produced in some way. In the case of Lovebites, it is extra instrumentation. That extra instrumentation makes for songs that are absolutely epic in scale. I for one am glad they are doing it that way.

What to say about his criticism ? Certainly an intollerant opinion, especially towards young bands. Today's young bands have a hard time to earn money in times where everybody consumes music for nothing on the internet. Where should the money come from for an additional pianist and a choir ? These people would only be needed for one or two songs, but would have to carry the whole tour and be paid. On the other hand the women of Lovebites would like to present a perfect song to the entrance paying audience. These attitudes of western men in this age is typical. Intollerant towards young musicians, no empathy to find out why young bands use backing tracks. Because of such people the Rolling Stones will still fill stadiums when they are 100 years old while young bands hardly have a chance. Musical crime because of backing tracks in 2023 ??? And this from the mouth of an American ? The country whose music industry has been spreading the biggest musical shit all over the world for 30 years ? I call that a very arrogant impertinence. Sad. Question : Have any of you been to a Rolling Stones concert in the last 40 years where the bongo drums on "Sympathy for the Devil" were played live and not from a backing track ?

I understand the criticism [especially on the post-production - although I want to add here that KZbin isn't the most reliable source when it comes to perfect audio/video correspondence. Even on videos which were posted by the band's management themselves it sometimes happens that those two aspects don't perfectly match although they absolutely do on the actual DVD/Blu-ray release. I can't tell if that's the case here or not but just something to keep in mind] but for me it's not a crime whatsoever if a person doesn't have 4 hands to play the guitar and piano simultaneously ;) However, if you were to deter from using your full artistic vision while writing a song because there are some people bitchy about you using backing tracks during live shows...THAT would be a crime to me. That being said I do have to look at my own prejudices and tastes here. For example: Dir en grey is a band that has extensively experimented with both and while I never mind them using backing tracks for additional piano, a rare violin or most often for non-instrumental atmospheric noises - I never liked them being used for additional vocal lines [which they use quite a lot on studio recordings] because Kyo always gets most creative and artistically insane when he has to do everything live on his own ^^ I also wander what Darren would think of sukekiyo who do pretty much everything on stage but use a whole number of electronic devises and the occasional pre-recorded track. In other words: Is it a difference whether that backing track is put on somewhere behind the scenes or by the members themselves or if it's even produced on stage for all to see etc.?

This critique about "music crimes" basically holds up garage bands as the model for what all bands should be, and that is deeply flawed thinking. The only bands that can reproduce literally everything they put on an album live, without backing tracks or hired backstage musicians, are pretty much garage bands. They can produce all that live, because they are stripped down to just the basics from the very start. Nothing wrong with that. AC/DC has made a living doing that, and so have several others. But bands that bring more complexity to their albums pretty much have to use backing tracks to bring to the audience what they bring on the albums. There's also nothing wrong with that. The old-school "if you can't reproduce it live, don't record it in studio" mentality has always been a false dilemma. The appeal of music is music, and there has never been any rule about having to reproduce every single part with a live person on stage. The people who try to invent that rule are a bit full of themselves.

I worked in a large concert hall in Brisbane, Australia about 35 years ago. I saw many international live acts there, including ACDC. During the ACDC concert I saw, they had a session guitarist playing with the band live, but he was not visible to the audience. He was actually standing behind a large stack of speakers (which was probably a prop). I could see him clearly from where I was, but again, he was hidden from the audience. I have no idea if ACDC did this sort of thing regularly, or if this was a rare occurance.

For someone who has been involved In the music industry for years it seems very strange that Darren Paltrowitz seems to have never heard of, or understood when backing tracks are used in live performances. They have been used in live performances since the 1980s, forty years ago. I would guess that most of the "who's who of rock and roll" he has interviewed have used backing tracks at some time in their live performing careers. I have just watched Fami's solos on Judgement Day on my Blu-Ray of KNAG frame by frame and I can assure Mr. Paltrowitz that finger positions/movements of her fretting hand match the movements of the fingers of her right hand and the notes played. She IS playing her bass. I thought that everybody and their dog (although seemly not Mr. Paltrowitz) knew that KZbin audio and video is out of sync, usually due to latency issues/delay in network communication between the user's device and the KZbin server. Causes can an be an unreliable internet connection, outdated hardware or software or the video being encoded incorrectly.

Nowadays the live music is so post processed that it nearly sounds like studio yes, and i understand some people likes the records more raw, but i don't have problems with that. I can finally enjoy this new interpretations of their music without the technical problems being in the middle. Also they record the track themselves, mostly miyako in the keys herself, so no problem for me. And you can watch their first concerts, Battle in the East or Daughters of the Dawn when the sound was mostly untouched and it still sounds great, or recently The Shining vol.2 that was just a raw live streamed aired on the fly. Still they play great and sound excellent, if you discount the rawness of the sound in comparison to the blurays.

Darren is correct when he points to the keyboard tracks (only), Lovebites does that with many songs. Fami, I believe, is playing every note. Darren may be a bass player but I think is is missing how quick and how Fami drags her fingers to quickly play 2 notes - her techniques. Also, Lovebites leaves in their mistakes. There are several LIVE videos where you see mistakes and I love them for it. So they are only guilty of backing Live songs with keyboard parts which Miyako played in the studio, I can live with that.

If you listen intently to LOVEBITES live recordings you can hear these very little things that could have been corrected in post production, but they didn’t. And the live sound is never close to the studio version and every time different. Also they play with different instruments the same songs from time to time. For example Miyako’s solo in „break the wall“ you can hear the characteristic sound of each of her different guitars in the different live versions. So they must have recorded a ton of different versions for any song if they would play anything not live.

Backing tracks are a little bit the same problem than autotune when presenting a band or artist to someone who has never heard of them: hearing the backing track (like here) or the autotune make them instantly think the artist NEEDS it to sound good and give them doubts about everything that's actually played - because that's the case for many bands and artists nowadays! Of course, we the fans who follow Lovebites since their beginnings, we perfectly know they need no "help" at all to sound fabulous live, and that the backing track is an artistic choice, nothing more. But I can partly understand his reaction - when presenting an artist to a "newbie", it would be smart to choose a very "naked" track with as less as possible embellishments (like Break the Wall).

So, any backing track is a musical crime, even if they recorded it themselves ? You just destroyed three quarters of the bands on the planet.🤔

When R&B/jazz singer Asami was asked to audition for a newly formed metal band, she sang Hailstorm's "Love Bites (So Do I)" because she did not know any metal songs. Along with her song, the band members liked the song and asked her for the name of the song, which led to the band's name.

Guys, this is going over the top. As we've heard all of Lovebites studio songs, we know that each performance is different and can tell they are obviously performing live. This was his first ever listen. I hope Joel continues to introduce Lovebites to new listeners on his channel. This pile-on might persuade him not to. The guy was wrong. Perhaps he should watch the livestream coming up on the 24th. That's it.

First time or not, Darren blew it with what he said. He would have been better off saying nothing, but instead throws out defamatory accusations. It's not over the top at all to attack him, because he attacked Fami with no grounds.

Yeah, I really do not care about this "expert's" opinion at all. About as valid criticism as modern videogame journalism (or journalism as a whole for that matter). Musical crimes my anus. Nightwish, Epica, The Warning and possibly most contemporary bands are criminals then. By his logic, I guess you can only do symphonic metal only if you are willing to bring and pay whole orchestra on the stage for every show, right? My dude should just pull his head out of the toilet. Or not, I really could not care less.

Musical crimes? Most modern bands play with backing tracks and, although not mentioned, click tracks. The cost of touring with multiple musicians is excessive when the artists are mostly living off the proceeds of touring. As for vocals, I had to give credit to Pete Townsend who asked our (the audience) permission for his nephew (on rhythm guitar) to sing Roger's high notes. Of course we all cheered and the show was great.

I saw Cliff Richard live in the early 1990s. I was working at the venue, not a paying spectator. Cliff told the audience that he was going to mime the entire next song because he was too old to sing it and dance actively. He also made a joke about the Milli Vanilli miming incident that had recently happened. The audience were perfectly fine with it, because he was honest with them. It was actually one of the better live concerts that I saw.

Thank you very much for the info, I am not a huge Lovebites fan (I like them though) so I missed this. I love watching raw performances though and I was already hoping for something like this (I was looking forward for possible fancams for next year). I see it's on PIA though which I believe is not available outside of Japan the last time I checked, but I might be misremembering and thinking about an other service. I really hope I am wrong, this would be fantastic.

Darren seems to forget that not all bands can afford to bring in a pro musician to do the live-shows. Especially considered how expensive there tours already are, and how little profit is left. So I find it appropriate, because I would rather have the full experience, that backing tracks give than an amputated experience. Not all fill stadiums. "I heard things that I didn't see the bass-player do#?? I would loved to see him specify.... Jeez i really don't like music-elitists.. Still liked his first assesment. Thanks for spreading the word about this great band. Look out for gigs next year. Wouldn't be surprised they do more than the prog-power gig.

@@TheCyberMantis He claims to be a bass player? Fami would destroy him 1 on one. So would Misa from Band-Maid and Haraguchi-San from Nemophila. I've been fortunate to see Nemo twice and Band Maid 3 times. They defiantly dont fake it either. That prerecorded piano and chior has to be played to make the song sound right on stage. And thew dope fails to realize the video feed will sometimes not match the audio with the motions you see. So he automatically thinks they are faking it? But he wants to accuse her of faking it? Seriously? I sent this reaction to a friend who was front row at that show. He's station in Yokosuka, I'm flying over next not for his retirement form the Navy. He was front row. He said this guy is a, well I won't use the exact words here..lol. But he was close enough to see the strings moving. That none of them were faking it. Now I'm a decent drummer and bassist myself. But I am nowhere NEAR!!!! these ladies level. I could be wrong, but it seems he just don't like the fact that tiny Japanese ladies are kicking ass on stage better than he could. It's fine to not like a particular band or performer. We all have different taste. That's your right. But to make accusations like that? You best have solid proof Bubba. Thanks for sharing LOVEBITES with so many people. But I do take offense to what he said about them playing to backing tracks. The only thing on a track is the strings/keyboards. Miyako can most definitely play guitar and keys at the same time but not with a song like this. The layers are needed or it would sound like a different song. All I can say is Boooo!!!! 👎🏻

If a band is creative enough to use a different instrument to make a song more interesting then deletes that just for the sake of being 100% live then all they are doing is killing creativity. For god sake don’t show him HANABIE live. They barely survived Covid financially and this guy wants them to hire extra keyboard players to play 100% live? It is a band killing concept to be 100% live.

I do kind of hate backing tracks, but should Miyako play piano at the same time as the guitar? They should hire somebody?? Also a weird solution, even if I thought about it. i want pure live to and also I want a bit improvision in a live song. With a backingtrack, I guess you need to go like on a rail? I remember when I first heard Rammsteins old live from Berlin, after the release of Sehnsucht. It was totally useless. It sounded exactly like the studio album. Not a note extra...and sometimes I wish Lovebites too could suprise with extras in the songs. Haruna solos...and definitely now, fami solos!
