What does "se" mean in Spanish?! This is one of the most common questions Spanish students ask me. We see se being used in a variety of ways in the Spanish language, which makes it so confusing. It can be used as a reflexive pronoun, for the passive and impersonal voices in Spanish, to replace the words "le" or "les", and a few more! If you enjoyed this video please give it a like and subscribe now if you haven't already!
Hey, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school seven years ago and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me.

The english 'one' has fallen out of use which is too bad because it is the "best" translation of the impersonal 'se'. A lot of European languages (of which English is one) have it. For instance in German, it's 'Man' as in 'Man sollte nicth rauchen'. Great content as always!

Aprendo Espanol. Hablo un poco de espanol. This is a good starting lesson for Se. Necessito repitir mi espanol. Soy trenta y tres. Spanish is confusing with all the words meaning having different meanings. Tan and Asi both mean So, but not sure why still. Como can mean what or how. Que can mean what or like 50 things it seems. Its interesting but challenging. I have found about 3 spanish pages I enjoy watching, one being yours. Thx for the videos

Thats awesome! Tambien aprendo español, pero en mi universidad. Te aconsejo que uses "tener" cuando tú hablas sobre tu edad (when saying one's age, use tener; yo tengo treinta y tres años). And yes I agree with a lot of the confusing parts you mention but it gets easier the more you work with the language over time and there are some things that take time to grasp. Spanish can be both easy and hard to learn as an English speaker, but it has been really enjoyable!

Let me help you a bit! TAN = SO: _Él es tan viejo = He's so old! _Lina es tan joven = Lina's so young! _Ellos son tan competentes = They're so competent. ASÍ = THAT WAY: _Hazlo así! = Do it that way! _Así no! = Don't do it that way! _Así es! = That's the way it is! CÓMO? (accent) = WHAT? HOW?: _Cómo se llama? = What's your name? _Cómo se siente? = How do you feel? _Cómo está? = How are you? COMO (verb, no accent) = I EAT: _Yo como mucho = I eat a lot. _Yo como poco = I eat a little. _Yo como frutas de desayuno = I eat fruit for breakfast! COMO (adverb) = LIKE: _Dino es como yo = Dino's like me. _Alba es como su madre = Alba's like her mother. _Ruy es como su hermano = Ruy's like his brother QUÉ? (accent) = WHAT?: _Qué quieres? = What d'you want? _Qué es eso? = What's that? _Qué feo! = What an ugly thing! How ugly! Now, you said you're 33, so you can still learn Spanish, or any other language, if you study a lot, memorize as many words as possible, and mainly, if you practice every day; if you have the chance! I hope that helped! 🍀

There are also verbs that always take se, like quejarse and arrepentirse. They don't exist without it. Then there are verbs which change meaning when se is added, like ir(go), irse(leave), perder (to lose something) and perderse (to get lost). Se is the most difficult concept of Spanish. I'm sure it messes with Spanish speaker's minds.

I know one of the hardest things for me is when a verb either changes meaning in the reflexive form or is used in a different manner. For example, probar translates in English to “to try” or “to taste” as in trying a new thing and tasting a food. However, when you make it reflexive the verb probarse means “to try on” as in trying on clothing. I’ve always struggled with this concept and it’s definitely something that has prevented my writing and speaking from becoming more advanced.

A Spanish speaking friend (who lives in L.A.) referred to a restaurant and commented, "El restaurante tiene - C" (He wasn't referencing "se" the pronoun or "sed" the word that translates to thirsty). In actuality, he was referring to Los Angeles county's letter grading system for restaurants that has reduced foodborne illnesses by 20% in the county. It was all just a play on words (ha-ha). On another topic: Nate! Just like you do, I prefer to use the pronoun "one" because it comes across as less judgmental than "you". By the way, you also do a great job at teaching the grammar to native Spanish speakers who were taught very little Spanish grammar as children. Muchas veces tus lecciónes son revisiónes o repasos - aún ayudan mucho. - un Hispanohablante en Alta California

#6:30 Excuse me, but "se vende casa" or "se prohibe entrar" (I would say: "NOT enter")" are paradigmatic examples in Spanish language of IMPERSONAL sentences with "se". No way, both examples, could be able to be examples of "passive reflexive sentences with se". Since all passive reflexive sentences with "se" must be capable of being transformed into passive voice sentences whose MANDATORY "agent complement", which could be omitted because it could ALWAYS be deduced from the context in which the phrase is used. And in the case of "se vende casa" no Spanish speaker could transform it into: "The house is sold=la casa es vendida"; since, not only does it sound totally inappropriate, but it would be INCOMPLETE due to in Spanish language the passive voice OBLIGATELY requires knowing or (at least) being able to DEDUCE WITHOUT ERROR (hence omitting!) by whom "the house is sold" (opposite than English language)? It lacks the "agent complement" of the passive voice in Spanish; since we will NEVER be able to deduce from context whether "the house is sold" + BY a real estate agency or BY + an individual or individuals. And since it cannot be known or deduced, that is, precisely!, the essence by DEFINITION of an impersonal sentence with "se" in Spanish language.. in my humble opinion.

_"Excuse me, but "se vende casa" or "se prohibe entrar" (I would say: "NOT enter")" are paradigmatic examples in Spanish language of IMPERSONAL sentences with "se"._ No, _Se vende casa_ is indeed a passive construction. You can easily prove that by using a plural subject, i. e.: _Se venden casas._ In impersonal constructions, the verb is ALWAYS conjugated in the third singular person, regardless whether the direct object is singular or plural. On the other hand, in passive constructions with _se,_ the verb must agree with the passive subject in plural if it is a plural object. The same happens in _Se prohíbe entrar._ This construction uses the infinitive _entrar_ as a noun in what in Spanish grammar is known as a "sintagma nominal". You can prove this by inserting an article (only nouns can have an article) _Se prohíbe el fumar_ which is equivalent to _El fumar está prohibido._ In standard Spanish, the use of impersonal constructions is normally limited to refer to humans or humanized things: _Se les recomendó [a ellos] que no fumaran; A la patria se la ama sin reparos._ When referring to inanimate subjects (things), the normal construction is a passive structure with _se: Aquí se venden huevos = Huevos son vendidos aquí._ P. S.: More information about his subject can be found by searching for _se_ in Real Academia Española's _Diccionario panhispánico de dudas._
