In this brief video Dr. Long explains what someone with macular degeneration sees and what symptoms they might have and should be aware of. Please be sure you see your regular eye care provider should you have any of these symptoms. Once your primary and/or retinal eye doctor either refers you or says "no more can be done" then call me or another low vision provider to get help with your functional vision problems (e.g. reading, driving, seeing television and computer, etc.)

I have hard time driving. Daytime ok but night bad. My doctor test my eye with new glasses that don't work. Said need shot in my right eye. I have catracts too.

Thank you for sharing. Difficulty night driving is one of the most common complaints I hear in my general practice, as well as in my low vision specialty. Filters and some special lenses, such as E-scoops, can help, but there are no easy remedies. Sometimes, night driving must simply be avoided. Best of luck to you. -Dr. Long

What about left eye fine, the other in dry MD, will loss in right central vision affect biopic vision, as the brain merges the transmission from both eyes?

Great question. The answer is "it depends." Therein lies an example of the value of a low vision evaluation by an experienced doctor. Certainly, determining whether one eye alone (occluding or not occluding the other eye) or both eyes together is very important to establish early in the evaluation. Also, in regards to binocular/monocular, what works best for distance vision (bioptics) may not be the same as what is best for near vision. The low vision examination is a very different type of eye exam and we typically need at least an hour to determine what works best for our patients' goals. I wish I could help with all of the requests to "just send me those glasses please." But, there are just too many factors to consider. --Thank you, Dr. Long

Hi Dr. Long I had the same issue. I used to experience a oval shape file covering the spot/face when I tried to focus on the spot/face. However, after use to an eye drop prescribed my my ophthalmologist, I don't experience the film covering the spot but still I can't see the details. Please, suggest How to improve further ?

Thank you for responding. If a magnifier helps and you see the details in larger, closer objects more easily then low vision care will certainly help you. In addition to magnification, contrast enhancement and brightness control can be useful as well. Thank you again. --Dr. Long

I have wet macular seems overnight I couldn't see a stop sign ran to eye dr . sent me next day to a retina specialist getting an injection past 6 months every 6weeks now no improvent said it wS to keep from getting worse now I keep a patch over it because it's like looking into a funhouse mirror. this was my good eye

What's your age? Did you have high cholesterol before that happened?

now have two floaters that I think are Flys! dr. says he sees them in my eye!
