I really feel bad for Sam Cane, sure he might not be the number 1 flanker in nz but the amount of hate he gets online is completely unjustified. Look at the stats for every game he plays his work rate is insane he makes all of his tackles is clinical in the ruck and has the experience behind him too. Papalii is no doubt on form compared to cane but if you look at the stats for that blues chiefs game last week cane out performed papalii in almost every area of the game. I feel like people who say nasty things about him online know nothing about rugby and are just using him as a scapegoat cause he's all blacks captain and the all blacks are underperforming.

I don't hate him, for all I know he's a great bloke and his Chiefs team mates seem to back him 100%. I'm strictly against vilifying him, as he's just a rugby player trying to do his best. But the question is, whether that best is good enough to eclipse say Dalton Papali'i, whose turnover capability can change the momentum of a game. I'm not convinced, that it is.

@@tysonwilson7588 I agree. People can be vicious. Dude is just trying to play for his country the best way he can. He might not be the best option, but he shouldn’t be vilified and treated badly. I realized this after the POM incident. Sam was getting the shaft from all sides. Media, fans, opponents. Most of the people who talk him down would melt under that pressure. But he just continued working hard and speaking softly. I’m a ‘Saders fan, so zero reason for me to unduly inflate him. Just aware enough, that there’s a human being behind all that.

Nonu was never a good center, it was the move to second-five that made him. However, it could be argued that Jordie & Rieko are just moved back to the positions they were in coming out of high school, and that they were converted originally to fullback and winger. It is also nothing new, I remember Bryan WIlliams & Stu Wilson being converted from winger to center back in the day. Also Tana Umanga.

I'm with the young lady on the left: The ABs were at their strongest when they had elite midfield (e.g. Nonu + Smith). In this cycle, they not only don't have anywhere close to the world's best midfield, they don't even have natural midfielders playing in the midfield (apart from cameos by ALB and Tupaea). If you think you can field a winger convert (Ioane) and an bunch of utility backs (Havili, J. Barrett) at 12 and 13 against Danty+Fickou, or Henshaw/Aki+Ringrose and come out on top, I've got a bridge in Florida I'd really like to sell you. Seen from that perspective, the Nankivel departure to Munster has got to be the biggest NZRU blunder in recent years. The way they mismanage their scarce midfield talent is unbelievable. I'd pick Blackadder over Jacobson, too, and Cane might be past his prime now, let alone in the next cycle, when he's just stealing caps from Papali'i. At 9, I'd go Roigard. Exceptional, and playing for a worse team. At 10, McKenzie might be the incumbent, but I expect Perofeta, Morgan and/or Love to make him work hard for the jersey. Bryn Gatland playing the role of the Badger of the 2027 cycle. On current form, Stevenson should be an All Black come 2023 RWC, let alone 2024. Same works for Telea, who has been phenomenal. If NZ are hell bent on not having natural midfielders at 12 and 13 as a point of principle, why not convert big Leicester to a 12 (he's got the physique and skillset for it, if not yet the awareness and experience), and give the 11/14 jersey to Will Jordan? I'm a big fan of his, but I'm worried Leicester lacks the top speed required for an international winger.

I think NZR is genuinely on the decline. Iron sharpens Iron and I don't see how NZ is truly going to stay sharp playing the likes of the pacific islands and Australia at club level. Losing the Saffers to the northern hemisphere was the single worst thing that could have ever happened to NZR and it shows in the quality at international level. You never hear any NZ pundit talk about this but I think it's 100% the biggest factor in the drop in the AB's form. The Crusaders lost to the fijian drua the other day mark my words it won't be long before NZ super rugby sides are losing regularly to the AUS/Islander teams.

@@wanderer5598 Yeah short-term success but long-term decline: Pumping money into the top is not as effective as developing grass-roots. And tbh, League does a better job of developing rugby talent anyway in the core basic skills. So even if Aus are good for beating the Kiwis, it's not going to resolve the underlying problems. In NZ someone already said: Go back to local rivalries instead of Super Rugby. That person is dead right: That's where the grass-roots game is able to develop and attract the younger generation.

@@Trajan2401 I would actually say it’s worse than any previous All Black teams we’ve seen. It doesn’t look inspiring at all in fact. Barrett, Savea, Retallick, Ioane, Whitelock, Mo’unga, Frizell, Smith all heading to Japan. Laumape, Bridge, Tu’inukuafe, Fifita, Naholo, Sopoaga, Lam all gone already. Jordan & Havili are weighing up their options in New Zealand. Two very good players. They could be out the door too. Dane Coles retiring. Jordi Barrett possibly off to the NRL. Sam Cane not the player he once was. Too many injuries. That’s a lot of big names with a huge amount of experience leaving and on the wrong side of 30. The next crop of players are average as we saw when Ireland beat them last summer twice. Ireland have also beaten the All Blacks 5 times in the last 7 years. So it’s rather a case that Irish rugby is now producing some real world class players and their strength in depth is starting to show how good it is now. The All Blacks aren’t what they used to be and teams like Ireland aren’t afraid of them and know how to beat them regularly now. But I will say that there are some quality players still in New Zealand. Hopefully Robertson can get the most out of them.
