One thing I think you missed - I don’t think “you’re a terrible sight” is just about the way you look or how organized you are or whatever. It’s about your ability to SEE the future. It’s like...you’re not good at seeing the future and what adulthood is like, but I’ve arrived here and you’re going to be OK. I think that’s what he means by being a “terrible sight.” That’s why later, the lyrics say, “I don’t know which way I’m going, but I can hear my way around.” You have to “hear your way around” because you’re a “terrible sight.”

My take? With Neon Gravestones sort of relying on this idea of glorifying suicide, and the mentions of struggle in verse two, my thought is that the “hype” is about the dark thoughts many people encourage -don’t believe them, and those (perhaps you inner Blurryface) who tell you to fall victim to this hype.

I think in the chorus the "I don't believe the hype" is also a bit about the insecurity Tyler talks about in a couple of songs on Trench that people will just move on from them. So he's relieved to know he has a "core fanbase" that will be with him no matter what because he doesn't believe the hype that is happening around them right now will be lasting

Wanted to clear something up about a different song. Someone told me they hear that “Leave the City” ends on the same note as “Truce”. Wanted your take on it? I personally feel like the last note of “Truce” is slightly higher in pitch than the last note of “Leave the City”
@AceMusicFreak
@AceMusicFreak 6 жыл бұрын
it's both a G5 chord (intended major) though Truce ends on the lower G (root) and the middle D (fifth) and Leave The City end on the lower G, the middle D and the middle G
@AceMusicFreak

EmoSigma Well Goner is in A which means without extensive extending of the key which you would never do in modern pop music there is no G(major) to be found.

Leave the City and Truce both end on a G/B third above middle C, so yes... it's the same. That's pretty cool! Goner ends on the A below middle C, so no for that one. (I just sat down at my piano and figured this out so I'm fairly confident in the notes but I may be wrong about the octaves)

Dude! Me too! My poor husband knows WAY MORE about this band then he has EVEREVER wanted to know! He was generous enough to take me to their concert in November, but i think he may've gotten the ill-conceived impression from that experience that he's like, done for the year?! Au contrair, Mon Frair! ...But no, really, i actually DON'T want to overly burden my marriage with myriad tøp trivia, nor the infinite speculation i am prone to get into on the subject of the world of Dema & Trench..& kind of the worst aspect of the whole shebang, which is, of course, Tyler's motivations, intentions,& how these, along with his anonymous snooping, have thus far formed this story..(cannot EVEN express how sick my man is of hearing about what must've been in Tyler's mind when he wrote this, did that, sang this..its one of his favorite things to rib me about).. For example: had you noticed the difference between the neon shapes the bishops were making in the NATN video & the eventual inverted 'double bars' shape that's supposedly the 'neon gravestones'? They are more rectangular, i think, in the MV than in, for example, the graphics on their big screens showing during the show..well, 'Sarah Lugo', a commenter from about a hundred years ago, pointed out that the (original) shapes look exactly like the Kanji character for 'bright','ray' &'sun'! & you know they love Asian languages! Wouldn't it make so much sense for Vialism (the worship of the Vial, or Vessel)to be directly opposed to the worship of The Light, & The Son? Like worshipping the vessel of light versus worshipping the Light of the world, or revering a cold piece of the light of the sun, captured in glass, instead of the Fire of the Spirit, or the Son of God, who lights the way, etc.. Anyways, i guess you probably feel me..just wanted to offer my empathy & solidarity..keep your chin up, kiddo..& if you ever need to discuss some tøp minutiae, hit me up on this post & i'll see it pretty quickly..muchlove, suki

i personally saw the bridge as what you explained but also his ukulele is introduced at that part (i'm not sure if it was in the song before the bridge) and it could also reference how he's using lots of different styles of music to express himself in this album, and he's "hearing his way around" because you hear music. i'm not completely sure though, i just thought it was cool how that connected in the music itself :)

For me I think when he says “you’re a terrible sight” it’s referring to how they can’t see their future very well, as he says later “but I’ll hear my way around” and I think the “hype” is about how everyone keeps hyping things up like it will go perfectly and amazingly, but he’s saying don’t believe it because it’s always different than they make it out to be. So basically, I think he’s saying in the song, “don’t believe the things that people hype up too much, avoid it and make your own future for yourself” Just my take though

I read the Coupe de Main interview and I didn’t get that from the interview. I thought he meant that, when he was writing Hype, he thought about what he wishes someone had said to him. And now he’s utilizing those thoughts as he’s writing this song. But like most tøp songs, it’s probably 2 levels - maybe it’s both, like you said. (And thank you for providing the forum for us to discuss this!!)

So further on the point of Tyler talking about staying true to what is actually true and not blowing things out of proportion, this lyric from Morph I feel like says a similar thing: "theres no above or under or around it for above is blind belief and under is sword to sleeve an around is scientific miracle." Particularly the above and under here I interpreted as being similar to what you mentioned. "Above is blind belief" is saying how having a bloated ego is having a false belief of yourself that makes you sound blind and foolish. "Under is a sword to sleeve" this ones a bit of a toss up for me because it could mean that you shouldn't put yourself down and think lowly of yourself. However, I feel like the fact he describes it as a sword (even if it is something getting put away) gives it different meaning than that. What do you all think?
@gFamWeb
@gFamWeb 6 жыл бұрын
I see "the hype" as people saying "oh just do this and you'll be happy" (essentially "quick cures" for depression or other serious mental issues). So Tyler's basically saying: "You're gonna be ok, but it's not going to be easy or simple as people make it out to be. You're gonna have times where you backslide, but it's ok. You're going to be ok in the end."

Maybe the beginning talking about being sanitized ties in with chlorine. In chlorine he talks about overdoing the creative process. However, chlorine in the right amount (ie in a pool) can be cleansing and helpful. So in the hype songwriting, slipping off from the exterior world into his interior world, provides need purification. They have talked about how they sort of used the silence as a way to siphon off people who weren’t as invested. So they are left with the people they know will be on their side. So cutting off the people talking behind your back and being left with your core group. Theory: “No, I don't know which way I'm going,” Tyler doesn’t know exactly where he’s going or what he’s doing (he’s talked about this as a big theme in trench, you are working on getting to a better place even if you don’t know what that looks like yet or exactly how to get there). “But I can hear my way around” maybe the music is acting as his guide on many levels. In one way to help him get out of trench and lead him to a better place. Music seems to be a big source of help and guidance for him in his life. Secondly, focusing on the music helps you avoid the hype. He talked about cutting himself off from outside influences during the writing process, letting the music guide him through the weeds and pressure of following up blurryface. They also have talked about how when they were beginning they kept their heads down and just worked hard not looking at what other people were doing. The music lead them to were they are and helped them avoid the trappings of the hype. So as he is looking for where to go next, he doesn’t know what that his but he can let his hearing/following the music guide him

As a Christian, to me the bridge means a lot about trust in God. He doesn’t know where he’s going at all, but he’s trusting God’s plan and trusting God’s voice to guide him, step by step (hearing his way around). I know Tyler’s faith influences a lot of his songs, so it’s a possibility. Either way, this interpretation is what fits me the most and means the most to me. Tyler intends for his lyrics to have different significance to different types of people, which is beautiful.

I absolutely agree :) I also think it's about other people guiding him too! Right before the bridge, there's those voices that are speaking to him. To me those are the Banditos calling where he should go. In a sense he's being guided by the little flickers of light from each friend, and all of these little parts of truth come from God. There's that line where its saying "it might take some friends and a warmer shirt" it kind seems like God is that shirt (or jumpsuit if you will :P) that is covering us from the cold. I really like the way you think about it!

I personally feel that he was talking about the immediately outer and world all around him, or also his kind. This is why he and his kind has to go to the tapes in their own basements. The tapes are the thoughts that are in all of our heads. This is why he has to go to his basement, deep within himself, ourselves, deep within thoughts and one's own self. Also, when he's talking to "you", again he's talking to himself and others. Yes, he talking about his own experiences, but by saying "my kind", he's bringing others by comparison into this introperspective point of view too. "A terrible sight", means the appearance to the rest of the world. The hype, is just that. It's all hype. It's the outer appearances and judging from this world too. "My kind" with, "I don't know where I'm going, but I can hear my way around..." is the unity and ability to think for one's own self. This is "My kind". "The hype", is all the noise that is trying to tell us what they want us to think how and what things are. Don't believe the hype...!

I think "The Hype" is what he sees. they hype is was is being put in front of him and he constantly is telling himself to not believe what he is seeing because its Hype. He is more likely to believe what he hears like in the line "I don't know which way I'm going, but I can hear my way around" to me, he is sort of saying "I'm closing my eyes to the hype and trusting what i can hear (the music he creates) to navigate his future.

I see "I hear my way around" as Tyler being led by his music.

Okay so... When I hear "I can hear my way around" I think Tyler means he can lead himself around his exterior and social life by hearing the rumors or "hype" and depicting what he thinks is true and what kind of people he can gravitate towards safely. I mean, now that I'm typing it it sounds less of a theory, but I'm a high school student and this lyric just stuck out to me and that's how I took it. #skeletoncrew for life!

"I can hear my way around," is Tyler referring to the Holy Spirit. Since we can't see, smell, feel, or taste the Holy Spirit it leaves us with the last sense, sense of hearing. Scripture uses the sense of of hearing when talking about following Christ and the Holy Spirit frequently. Some people refer the Holy Spirit to a sort of "conscience," and how we should listen to our "good conscience." In Tyler's case, and mine too, it is the Holy Spirit.

Hear my way around could also be a play on the phrase "playing it by ear". As in Tyler hasn't really figured it out. He's just taking life one day at a time. Just a thought.

When he says "And you know you’re a terrible sight But you'll be just fine Just don't believe the hype" I believe he is saying you know you're a terrible sight you know that you're dealing with some stuff and struggling but you'll be fine in the end and don't believe the hype I feel is a reference to neon gravestones and celebrated suicide and that you shouldn't believe the hype that the media can portray about suicide

When I heard the bridge of this song, I felt like it was a spiritual reference: in life, we really don’t know what we’re doing or where we’re going, so we feel blind. But Tyler is listening to God or the Holy Spirit to guide him. That’s what I got from it 👍
