YES YES!! I was just talking about this with my girlfriend this weekend. What the stress of buying fancy cars/houses can do to a person. I like the simple life as well. I do have a home in the city that is close to my daughters dad, but when I can I am in the wilderness, living in a tent. This year, I lived in a tent 61 days, some of the best days of my life.

I agree!! But sometimes main stream society (when you must deal with it, as I must) looks at you as though you must be totally nuts when you express the idea that you want to live off grid in a remote cabin in the woods! I look forward to being able to meet you and Brooke within the next year or 2!! Thanks for taking us along on the adventure!! ~Kitty

I found this video at exactly the time I needed to see it. I've been wrestling my own problems whilst trying to sustain a life I wasn't happy with, and hearing Dave's words once again proved to be the kick in the backside I needed to have a drastic rethink. I've been a long time fan of Bushradical and Girl in the Woods, and I find that both Dave and Brooke always seem to say the things I want to hear whenever I watch their videos. I think more people need to see this video in particular, as it truly defines how I want to live my life, and I'm sure many more people do too. Dave and Brooke are living the life they want to live, minding their own business and showing the world that we can all do it too. That's why I find them so inspiring. "A lot of people say 'You know, you're living the life, you're living my dream.' That's too bad because you could be doing that too" I'm gonna live my dream, I'm gonna be happy and I'm gonna be radical. Thank you for inspiring me, motivating me and helping me realise I could be doing so much more.

Agree with you 110%. Life's too short to live in the fast lane. An it ain't broke til I can't stick it back together with the welder or change it up with the cutting torch. An when kids were younger. I'd tell them we're going to get lost today. So now with my grandkids they're calling an wanting to go get lost. Life's a adventure live it to the fullest. An one time my grandson asked if I have ever been lost. I told him been turned around but never lost because I'm standing right here. Lost is just a place in your mind. That grandson going to be a handful because he's always thinking. But I wouldn't have it any other way. He loves helping me an being outside. Darn seems like I write a book Everytime I respond. Well anyway keep up the great work.

I just watched your explanation of "Bushradical" and I don't believe I've ever identified with anything so completely. I've been miserable with society for some time, and I've made the decision to take the plunge. The only decision I have left is whether to choose Alaska or Montana. But your videos have been a real encouragement to what I'm preparing for. I can't wait to get out there and build my own cabin. Keep the videos coming!!!
@Bushradical6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. I really had a hard time "defining" the core concept I wanted to get across with this channel....If you read the channel description it says "survival, adventure , and rustic living"......but the real heart of what I want to get across is that you don't have to play the same ball game the rest of the world plays. You don't have to conform. You don't need the 401k, or the car payment, or the rat race, or the 3 bedroom house on a thirty year mortgage.....You can choose to have an auction of your "stuff" and be in the northwest territories, or Alaska in a month...its all a choice. Too many people don't believe they have a choice. Many people think they "have" to follow the same pattern of work/payments/ mortgages......that everybody else follows.....screw that. We're all headed to meet the Lord someday and you can't take your new SUV, with you. I appreciate the fact that idea resonates with you. Best of luck on whatever you do brother!!

No need to explain what “Bush radical” means......we always understood what you meant by that. Your “living”, not just “existing.” I worked for almost 30 years at a job that was repetitive, staying there only for the pension benefits, not realizing that I was very unhappy. Now that I am out of that place, and now receiving that “pension”, I will no longer waste another single day doing something that my heart isn’t enjoying or believing in. From here on out, I want to live a “bush radical” life style. It’s where I’m most comfortable. Free! Free at last!! -Stephen, Ohio

Well Said! I have lived a very similar life on being self reliant and homesteading and yes it is about the adventure and the fact of knowing you can do and take care of yourself and the sense of accomplishment you get from that. Being practical and resourceful and a sense of knowing who you are is the key. Of course people are drawn to this channel and you are correct it is about freedom and doing with what you got on hand. This is a good time to say THANK YOU to both you and Brooke for sharing. Dave, You sure got that right. I worked 16 yrs. for a Canada printing company here in our small town in E.central IL. and got where I would rather take a beating than go to work . Because it was one of best paying jobs in the area and I had two sons to get through college . I had PTSS and migraines from Vietnam combat and ended up in the hospital with the migraines, 7 yrs. later. It was 16 yrs. of wasted hell. When I got out of there, it was like a large weight lifted off of me or a bird turned loose and flying off into the sky . With in weeks the migraines started getting farther apart. I could enjoy life in the country where we moved to raise to boys . Life is to short to waste like that. Born to hunt and fish , made to work !

Thanks for the backstory Victor. You sound like someone I would love to sit around a fire and talk about life with. There just isn't many good reasons to live the way we sometimes do.....Out of the last 4 years I have lived 1 year, 3 months in a wall tent. Ive been happier in the tent than in the home I own.

@@Bushradical , I suppose that depends on who your with and what your doing and where ? When we 1st got married ( 1964) , on weekends in the summer we would go down to the river and throw a 9x9 canvas tent in our 14' Alum boat along with fishing a few cooking things and head up river to a spot I had cleared at the mouth of a creek and spend the weekend fishing. I dug a narrow trench to cook in and through a refrigerator grate over one end for her to cook on . If we could get a 3 or 4 day weekend, it was even better . Later on in the '70's we use to go to Southern IL. Shawnee Nat'l Forest to deer hunt and camp out for a week in the fall and I could walk all day and never walk out of the woods and not see another person all day. :- ) The terrain looked like Eastern Ky. with sheer rock cliffs dropping 100- 200 feet. I was ready to move, but there were no jobs as the coal mines had all shut down. We still have fond memories of those days. You two have sure lived life, like no other couple I have ever heard of. What a wide range of experiences. My wife and I could listen to you two tell about them around a camp fire for days !! Another blink of your eyes and you two will be empty nester's ?? God bless you both.

Hey friend 🙂 Great video! I think maybe the whole bushcraft movement is people trying to break from this giant system and live how you do even for just a little piece of time. A night or a weekend. Everyone wants your life including me lol. It just seems impossible to achieve... I have 4 children and the oldest is ten. It is nice to watch you and see someone achieve our dreams. I know it’s not an easy life... but you are right about me at least waking up to the same thing and having no control of my own destiny. No drive. Bushcraft is a hobby that fills a void for me that seems missing. Keep posting your videos please to give us hope that there is still a way🙂You live what we go out on the weekends to get just a taste of.

Dave, the things that you are saying here, and some things that you've said/done/shown in other videos have definitely given me reason to ponder some things in my life. Things are getting worse at work for me (I work in medical imaging), and two days last week I came home flat out angry. It pretty much took a much needed trip out to the wilds for some camping, kayak fishing, and video shooting to help get my balance corrected. Some aspects of my work I do like (helping good folks who need help/care), but a lot of aspects I strongly dislike. When I see people living their lives free, happy, and fulfilled, as it seems your family does, it really makes me ponder what it would take to make that happen for me and my wife. Sometimes I wonder if I wasted too much time when I was younger to pull off a more rat race free life at this point? (Based on your comment about the Edmund Fitz sinking, it sounds like you are probably close to exactly 3 years older than I am.) I do know that a big change would take me out if my comfort zone....but then again how much is comfort worth if maintaining it means going to a job that I generally don't like. I have plenty of food for thoughts and ponderings......that's for sure!

Hey MCO! I hear you brother. I'm 42 and I still don't know what I want to do with my life....but I do know that I would rather rather be excited with life that feel trapped or bored. There is so much to say on that topic. I run into people everyday that feel unsatisfied with their circumstances. Years ago I found out I could live in my truck and be happy. That I could live in a 12x12 cabin and be happy. That changed he way I looked at the world around me. The last three summers Ive lived in a wall tent and loved it. There is such freedom in coming to understand how little any of us really need. How less luxury makes everyday richer. How much better a good book is when you have plenty of time to read it. The satisfaction of things made with your own hands. Hopefully this summer I'll finish my 16x20 cabins and move in. It will feel like a mansion after the tent, and I'll have less than 3k into the place. Feel free to message me anytime, I love talking shop about rustic living.

Dave I worked minimum wage jobs. I raised 2 son's single mom. Every penny I made went to support myself and 2 son's. I I needed a new pair of shoes or one of them they got the shoes. I lost my youngest son 8 years ago. But now seems life passed me by. I am 67 now. Diabetic with Neuropathy in my hands and feet. I would love to live out the rest of my life in a way you do. My oldest son won't even take me camping for one last final time. I am able to do things just not by myself. I am afraid of an outhouse or not having running water. I was raised in WV by my grandmother after my mom died of breast ca at 39 I was 13. Dave those were the best days of my life. So much so I have asked that my ashes be taken back to WV to be spread. Glad you gave this descriptor it makes sense. I am curious about your approach to parenting while living this kind of lifestyle. I assumed because you were able to do Alone that you have people you trust to leave your kids with. The fact that you took them with you on the Yukon River Run I am sure shocked or horrified a lot of people. I would be interested in hearing what you think are the pros and cons of creating a life of experience is for your children.
@Bushradical7 жыл бұрын
Actually both our kids were born in Fairbanks. They were 5 and 3 before Brooke and I got running water. We would boat out to fish camp and stay in our wall tent in the summers whenever we could......when we shot Yukon river run the kids weren't even excited about it...to them it was just another trip in the old boat to camp out in a wall tent...... We're all really close and we try to raise them to be free thinking and resourceful people. They're good kids.

I think there are great advantages in raising kids outside of normal thought, though that can create issues for them with in "normal" peer culture when they hit the teen years. That might be the answer..I really don't know. It would be great if healthcare wasn't ridiculously expensive. You can get your knee replaced in Thailand for like $2,000 . My friend Neil had his teeth replaced in the Phillipeans for a few hundred bucks....it would have been 10k here.

Thanks LT. None of us really liked the way that show was edited. Too much Drama. But Brooke and I have know Neil and Lauro since 2000.....I have pictures of Brooke, Neil, and myself on a log raft floating down the Yukon 17 years ago...You would think its the same raft except all of us are a lot younger!

I used to hunt when I was younger. While I was in Alaska full time I got a caribou once.....Fishing is more my speed.

Wish I gad gotten that advise 20 or 30 years ago. P.S. Thank you so much for responding to all my comments.P.S.S. If you have some time to kill check out a You Tuber, "Second Chance Hiker". 98 average 12 minute episodes. watch one or two a day to feel good. It's about a 400lb young man hiking the PCT loosing 100 lbs and finding love. His spirit is infectious.

I'll check him out. Sounds like a great story and I love a good story!

You should make a video about " contentment " . People these days are not happy / satisfied with what they have or what they have achieved.. always feeling inferior , i think 2020 have made it even worse

Just wondering if you have a paying job? You must still have bills to pay?
@Bushradical7 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a "job" job in years. I do free lance construction in the summer, Both Brooke and I do public speaking when we can, I buy and sell antiques, and musical instruments......lots of little things. I used to be a cement contractor. One thing that makes a big difference is we don't have a mortgage. I built the first 3 homes we lived in in Alaska, and I built them out of pocket when I was a contractor and had a lot of cash flow. We sold our house in Delta junction in 2012 and bought this old farm with cash. We also have our property in Ak, and we bought that with Cash....we do 95% of our own mechanic work, and all our vehicles are paid for. Those things give us a lot of freedom. Thanks for the question Lisa.

That is how i wish we could live. Mortgage free, we do not have car payments. But my husband and i arent mechanically inclined. Good for you. Live simple and stress free. Love your channel and Brookes as well. I rooted for you on Alone!!!!!

I would love to see a video from a concrete guy like yourself explaining footers and foundation basics for folks trying to build on permafrost. There’s just so little information out there. With your experience and gift for explaining things; Your tips could really be useful.
