Found your channel a week ago and love your methods. They removed me of the gentleman that trained my first two working dogs. I'm glad I met him all those years ago, because I'm not afraid to give a leash correction, and I didn't fall into the cute soft positive training methods most are preaching today. Dogs are animals with their own motivations and their own language. They're not meant to be cute. Nature is not cute.

I'd say that nature has those 2 faces, one sweet but another one that's really cruel, and that's precisely what many all positive and animal rights activists don't understand, they think everything in nature is beautiful and sweet, like in Disney movies where animals are friends. Pure anthropomorphism!

Joel, I just recently found your channel. After volunteering for our local animal shelter for close to a decade, I went into animal control for 5 long years. Around the same time we started a rescue. Because we see so many "2nd hand dogs" we are often tasked with "testing" dogs. Many potential adopters already have a dog so we actually use other dogs to "test". Of course we use muzzles, leashes and gauge the dogs slowly. I was very excited to see your method. Only other dogs can give accurate feed back on other dogs. We thought that was common knowledge. Some trainers that don't even attempt that is mind blowing. Thanks Joel and Prince.

One thing I like about how you use Prince is to also read how he reacts to the other dog. So we can better understand what the dog is putting out there

Yeah, one of the reasons I love watching Prince interact w dogs and correct them, is it's almost like having a dog translator. Prince interacting w dogs and Joel pointing out what's happening between them helps us understand the dogs perspectives and how they are similar to and different from humans and what we think is going on in the dogs mind and body. I love how Joel will say something about a dog's behavior like "you don't get to come in to somebody else's home and rush a dog in its home" and then we see Prince communicate the same thing to a dog in dog language. The little communications between Prince and the dogs and the body language that people would usually miss, that Joel points out to us, and it actually makes sense, helps me so much to understand dogs and just how much they communicate through body language and just how much humans unintentionally miscommunicate with their dogs.

A Cane Corso owner here. A few years ago I actually had a positive only trainer/supposed behavior expert give me some academic references as an excuse for why my dog, at the time, was not able to work around other dogs and may in fact never be able to. I was also told it was all mostly based upon fear and lack of positive experience. I always knew this was most likely NOT the case based upon behavior I had witnessed and just having a sense after owning many large dogs for multiple decades. I had rescued her after she was 1 year old so her puppy stage was unknown but I knew she needed more time and experience with strong leadership not desensitizing using treats and praise. She's a big strong 125lb girl who knows she can get away with behaviors and muscle you if you do not maintain leadership at all times. What I was instructed to believe was fear, I believe was her being a mastiff. She will spit a treat or ignore a positive praise to get what she wants unless you are clearly in charge. She is extremely protective and defensive of her domain and takes her time to warm up to strangers but that is ok. Today she's a happy loving respecting big sister. As large dog owners we already know we can get away with maybe 1/10 of the annoying or unacceptable behaviors that small dogs get away with and so channels and resources like yours are an absolute necessity to staying sharp on the skills required. Thank you.

Thanks for your post. I have a Karakachan/Akbash mix who is very similar in personality as yours. I wondered if what I was witnessing w/my dog was normal for his breed or if he has behavior issues. After a little research about my dog's breed, I learned his behavior is cemented deep in the nucleus of his cells! Knowing his breed has been around since Christ walked among us, they were bred to fight wolves & bear, his dominant/extremely alpha behavior was necessary in fighting off huge predators and they'll fight these predators to the death. I should have known when at only 2 months old he barked back a full grown mastiff.

I believe there are different types of trainers. Some that teach lessons for dogs to learn and grow up the correct way, understanding and learning commands and what is expected from them. Others like yourself are there to fix more extreme issues, whether lack or training, irresponsible training, social issues, or psychologically damaged dogs. You do an excellent job helping those dogs. Kudos to you!!

you were my inspiration to use my dogs in a mentor way, first it was when i got the second dog i tried it on her and worked wonders. Especially when she was still there around 2-6 months, it was super easy teaching her the basics of obedience and how to behave in general, she was copying the older one in everything and added a few quirks of her own. Then i tried using the older with a few clients dogs, and worked wonders, i will not forget i had a really shut down dog, and i mean, extremely shut down, if you approached him while he was on the leash with the owner and he didnt meet you ever before he would hide behind the owner and shake, especially with guys like me, big and burly, that behavior came out even more. I tried everything i had with this dog, btw it was a cross between a pittie and i believe an istrian hound, beautiful dog, but really skittish, really scared, i was without any ideas, i tried patience, luring him with food, toys, nothing worked. As soon as he saw my older dog approach me and give me kisses he first came out of hiding and then after i played with my dog a bit he wanted to join in. That dog is still one of the biggest successes in my short carreer so far and he is doing so well, i check up on him 1x month and he is great now, super outgoing, confident and enjoying his life to the max. Props to his owner as well, that girl really puts in the work and does everything she can for that dog, they both came such a long way

I’d be interested to see more about small dogs with problem behaviors. In my limited experience smaller dogs are more difficult to correct than large dogs. Obviously untrained large dogs are more dangerous, but small dogs with bad behavior still have a huge impact on an owner’s quality of life. Love your stuff. But I haven’t seen much about small dogs.

About the trainers that don't want to work with aggressive or extreme dogs: I think it is fear and a lack of trust in their own abilities. I have noticed a pattern in good dog trainers. They are all very dominant, self secure and rational people. Not only with dogs, with people too. It takes gutts, intelligence, feeling for animal behavior and a rational mind to take on the 'bad guys' and get them balanced. Starting out, it is scary though sometimes... As for training your own dog: kind of a difference if that dog was an aggressive pit bull turned right or a yellow lab you owned since 8 weeks old. Around here the trainers al have problem dogs, that to me is a HUGE red flag.

We have an ex street dog. She is called "the mediator" in our local park because she seems to intervene when a fight threatens and stops the aggressors in their tracks, often with a single bark She is also very good with over boisterous puppies. (when we got her she had obviously just had pups) I have never, in 40 years of owning dogs had one like her. She is very gentle with people and kids. I take no credit for the way she behaves and indeed she is sometimes stubborn when I call her to go home Our newer street dog "tried it on" attempting to dominate her and push her away from us. She soon put him straight. She has never touched another dog aggressively and I really don't know what it is about her that makes them toe the line. I found your channel and think you are the bees knees! (as we say in UK)

Adopted an 8+ yr old Boxer from the local animal shelter. Best dog! Loved by people and dogs - whomever she met. She would casually walk by this one Springer that had rage syndrome at a party I was attending. She watched the dog go after a few dogs that ventured to close to her tie out. Paisley walked by, close enough, acted like she wasn't paying attention, as soon as the springer charged, Paisley just grabbed on to him and put him on the ground as if to say, knock it off, we don't act like that. Dog was fine the rest of the day. Almost like he woke up. Oh wow, alrighty then. Just the right amount of force without any repercussions - just telling you the way it is, dude. Miss her so much. Lived in Grenada for a year, but most of the loose dogs shy away from people and other dogs. Miss Grenada too - 80 degrees year round.

Wildlife Biologist here, and I've always thought that the long canine teeth of the Smilodon Cats were indicative of them feeding on huge animals, probably scavenging carcasses, and those long canines were used by the cat plunging them into the belly of, say, a mammoth, and using powerful neck and shoulder muscles to pull the teeth and cut open the body cavity to get at the internal organs. The Smilodon canines I've seen have sharp, sometimes slightly serated edges that would help with that. But those same teeth would have made it almost impossible for a Smilodon to pursue prey and kill it like all modern cats do. They would basically keep the Smilodon from being able to bite smaller prey as modern cats do. That would explain them going extinct with the huge North American megafauna, if they were unable to prey on smaller, faster prey.

I used to train dogs as a teenager. I worked for a brilliant balanced trainer and ran her operation for a few years before she officially retired. At one point, one of the "Force Free" certification groups reached out and asked us to certify people. We said yes mostly out of curiosity. The criteria for us to pass them was super simple - they had to bring their own dog to a puppy class. It was my first experience with a truly aggressive Golden Retriever and reinforced how much damage all positive training can do. This was 20 years ago.

At 17:45, you reminded me of a quote I use often. In the movie "Leap of Faith", Steve Martin plays a shyster revival preacher. He does laying on of hands healing. It's OBVIOUSLY a con. But, a kid actually heals. The climactic scene of the movie is the kid catching up to him. Steve is sitting across from the kid and tells the kid that he's a fraud. During the interaction, he asks the kid, "Do you know the greatest fear of any con man?" and he continues, "The genuine article. The genuine article will see through the con every single time." Trainers like yourself, Ceasar Milan and not many others are the genuine article.

Another fantastic Pod! I get your pyramid I would augment the hierarchy as increasing authority and skill. Anyone can google a subject and then talk about it or opine on the topic. Behaviorally, they are self rewarding by bashing others without any skin in the game. It's mental masturbation, best not to support their videos. You're just rewarding their psychosis. Same with showing their own dog. I've seen several youtubers that show off obedience (in several cuts) and show it off within a safe sterile environment like it is a trick with perfect precision. The third rung is probably where anyone actually has some relevance. I applaud your skill at training a helper dog. If you can be objective enough to train a working dog that trains other dogs is a force multiplier. Special forces stuff. My only gripe is that the helper dog is a only a tool. It's right up there with the inventor of the gentle leader. At the end of the day it's all about the trainer and daily study of behavior modification. I hope your pod opens up and effects a larger audience. I believe wealth in any capacity is caused by an individual's ability to successfully help/satisfy the greatest amount of people. Obviously in dollars, Bill Gates is an excellent example. love it or hate it, windows is used by the vast majority of people around the world and the man is financially wealthy. Mother Theresa in the same way was wealthy in grace by inspiring individuals, communities, cultures, and countries to be empathetic towards the poor and neglected. I think your cause is solid and I wish great wealth for you in your particular facet and hope that you are able to effect exponentially more people and animals. You'll figure out how.

I think there are some excellent dog trainers with social media presence who stay in the 3rd rung not because of lack of ability but rather their lane is more focused on performance / dog sports. They may help their paying members with dog aggression individually, offline, with more of a dog sports approach… but it’s not their main business.

Hello, coming from a 7+ years dog daycare/boarding background. Prince is not that unique. Many employee dogs (not all but several) have dogs with similarities to Prince because of the sheer exposure to other dogs. My husky/border collie mix at the time helped me with both aggressive and skittish dogs. Aggressive dogs seemed to respect his calm but assertive demeanor. And terrified dogs seemed to find comfort in him because he knew to give them a little space in their terrified state and would wait for those dogs to come to him when they were ready (which is where I feel Prince is a bit too intense at times). He helped dogs that could not be around any other dogs be able to integrate and take part in daycare and socializing. And when working in a room with 100+ dogs at the same time, my dog assisted me with getting a hold of naughty dogs by knocking them off balance until I could get to them (something he picked up on his own). I managed dogs similarly to what you do (and before having a kid ha ha). Just never quite got into dog training as it didn't quite interest me. The responsibility of being expected to transform someone else's dog was more than I wanted because I know it comes down to the owner ultimately managing their own dog for long term success. I'm now a homesteader with farm critters but eventually want to create my own small (3-5 dog) boarding facility. What you do with Prince is unique as a dog trainer (other than Cesar's been doing it for years). But in the dog daycare world this concept is not new for integrating and managing dogs with employee dogs (similar to Prince). Love the pod cast. A lot of great info. Keep it up!

Hi Joel, I am in Ohio and follow you. I have a faciilty for boarding & training. I would like to see if you can do a podcast on how crazy it seems that many of our client dogs come in on MEDS! Setraline, Prozak Trazodone, a myriad of psychotic drugs. Young dogs that vets are prescribing for thinks like barking , jumping , anxiousness etc. Of course when the dogs are here they are worked daily and they are in social playgroups . The dogs have no issues when they are worked and tired. The minute they go home, different dogs , back to the issues.. So the parents put them on meds to keep them like zombies.. Your hierarchy is brilliant, wish I saw it before because it explains so much. May I suggest another possible stage to your hierarchy? What about those who have physically saved a dogs life through first aid, accidental fights, CPR? I suggest this to go after aggressive dog stage - below the dog teaching another dog. The only reason why I have suggested this, is because applying first aid, CPR or physically break up fights, this takes a certain kinda of Trainer to be able to deal with the adrenaline of the moment. You have to be a certain type of pack Leader to be able to save someone else’s dog, not just my own. Lastly… I think you could also add a level for “dog walkers.” So many people think dog walkers can solve unstable behaviour and it’s simply not true. I believe it’s an evolution from bottom to up and I would put a Dog Walkers level just above the “Talkers.” These are just suggestions, and from my working dog perspective. I love your channel, it’s a source of clarity, truth and expectations. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it’s so valuable. Cheers from Canada. 😊

Not really. Most of her cases are certainly problem behaviours on a course towards aggression, but generally speakingh what she deals with are basic lack of boundaries and focus. The odd cases I have seen her that were aggression based, did not really get to the root of the problem either and i definitely would not call them successful interventions. One ended in nearly full time muzzle wearing for safety's sake, and the other (leash choking morbidly obese shih tzu) was still sitting 40 feet away from any passing, dog getting 5 treats per minute, 6 months after the owner were taught that "desensitizing" technique and never progressed beyond that. I'll agree her methods are fine for shaping a young dog or calming dog a spaz that has never been subjected to boundaries but she is of the school that would rather destroy a dog gone too far rather than utilize methods she disagrees with to reel them in.

Hey Joel and Eric. I have a driving game I used to play with my family on road trips when I was a child. The person starting the game says the name of an animal that starts with the letter 'A'. The next person has to say the name of another animal that starts with the last letter of the previous animal that was said. If you can't think of one then you are out. If you accidentally say an animal that was already said then you are out and the next person keeps going. You play until you have one person left. I didn't just have to remember animals, but how to spell their names too. I also had to have a way to prove later that an animal exists if no one else had heard of it.

@robinrutherfordcost4748 oh! Yes. My school teachers got us to play that. Usually it was "on my shopping list I have..." or "I brought to the picnic..." I always lost that game or I remembered everything in the wrong order which got me out of the game right at the start. 😅

EMPATHY! GENUINE, ORGANIC EMPATHY! THIS is the reason why I call Joel the Real Deal. The proof's in the pudding. This man and his 4 legged sidekick has changed thousands of lives, and I'm one of them. Never grew up around dogs, didn't care too much about em regardless of what breed or size. Decades later I'm blessed with one, ran up on Beckman's vids and I can't even describe the love I have for my 4 legged bro. Joel is the main reason me and my dog have such a bond; then there was American Standard. Joel, thank you and may your family prosper.

Okay, as far as fantasy animal picks. I'm a former Dungeon Master, so I'm thinking you have to do this orderly. In the campaign, my players would sometimes encounter wolves and other wildlife. Say with a bobcat or something the attack would go something like sword vs. claw, claw, bite. There would be 3 possible attacks to the one attack by the sword. Each claw and bite would have a numerical amount. Something like 4/4/8. And you would roll for initiative, and then to see if each attack would hit, and then roll for damage. (1d4/1d4/1d8). So, if you do that with a rhino, they would have 2 attacks- charge and impale. Say 10/8 and so forth. Get some DM dice and have at it.

BTW...there would be agility type bonuses for cats etc. You basically add some points to their "to hit" score. I would totally go with a Kodiak Bear or Grizzly.

I do think there's an in between portion where they are showing their own dog to "clients" even when you are fixing your dogs fault s/ you lack of training and able to correct yours. Like I have a great dog but due to medical issues I often need to retrain mine and use him on some things to show exactly how you need be and show the discipline with your own.

New dog owners are really both spoiled by the great information out there, but also thrown into the deep end of badness. I enrolled in a local place well recommended, and had a weird experience with a very young trainer. I love you guys, Robert Cabral, Tom Davis, Haz Othman, the actual “balanced” trainers out there. Out of curiosity I enrolled in a couple Susan Garrett courses, and there’s a lot of good learning to be had, but, the semantics are carefully chosen as well as the dogs used in examples. Her techniques work great with the Cockagoldendoodledoos but fall short on headstrong, high drive dogs. Or rather the techniques work especially well on brand new, “not screwed up or mentally sound” puppies. At one point she says “your dog might show some signs of frustration but (after working through) will learn to make better choices.” Which can be applied to methods that are more balanced. If “no force” was truly being used, why have a collar and a leash? Does a mother dog use cookies to get the puppies to stop suckling, or to discipline them? She says “Aaah-Aaah!”..and “Leave it!” shouldn’t be used as instead the dog should be so well trained that they ignore whatever and make “better choices.”. Well..sounds good in theory, but, my 18 wk GS ain’t there yet, somehow, I think I’m getting ready to have to move to a prong collar because he’s injuring his throat pulling so hard.

Just started following you, and appreciate your knowledge, and experience. You and Robert Cabral are the only trainers that i can take seriously, and have mad respect for. I got caught up in the "positive only training" topic because of what's going on with two trainers right now. It actually had me rethinking what I learned about how dogs work (mostly from Cesar Milan), and perhaps I needed to look into the research that the positive only trainer was providing to back up his argument. Fortunately, I have not fallen for this positive only position. It just doesn't jive with how dogs are wired. There has to be clear leadership, as the majority of dogs are not born to take the leadership role. I've only had two dogs in my 61 years. My first i got at 3 months old (terrier mix). And the second one i just adopted a couple of weeks ago. She's an older (5-7 years old) GDS who was so fearful fearful, and sensitive when she got to the shelter that they didn't put her in a kennel (had her in staff offices). After two months of being there, she made some progress, but very little, as she's still very fearful and jumpy. I believe it's going to take quite a while for her to get better. She's pretty much glued to me, and gets anxious when she doesn't know where i am. At the same time, still doesn't really engage with me. Occasionally, I can get a little bit of play behavior, but its only for a few seconds. I'm so hoping that i can help her turn into a happy dog. She appears to have a great temperament, and is not really active. I'm finding it hard to know if I'm moving to fast with her. I only take her on short walks, as she just can't seem to relax, but at the same time, need to find a way to keep her moving for the sake of her physical health. Sorry... such a long comment. But I've found that puting our story out there has been helpful (getting different suggestions from folks) since i have no experience with a shelter dog like her. Thank you!

I really appreciate your advice. I now recognize the difference between play position and aggressive in dogs as I walk my five-month-old puppy around the neighborhood and she encounters new dogs. She has made new friends each week and stays away from the ones who are too aggressive. I also listened to your advice about the puppies from PA and OH and instead went with a great breeder near me. It was worth every penny for sure. Could you talk about the Volhard puppy temperament test on one of your podcasts as a means for picking the right dog for your family.? I am curious what your thoughts are on it. This is how I picked my puppy and she is the perfect dog for me and my household. I would also be interested in learning about the best dogs for service for children with autism.

Love you Joel ❤ your training methods have helped me Immensely. I'm having some difficulty with my tiny dogs.. a Shih Tzu, Morkie and Multipoo with loose leash walking they keep walking ahead pulling on the leash. They could do circles allll day in trying to get them to connect that the direction is changed as soon as they begin to pull. I'm at the point of being frustrated. I take a deep breath and I clear my thoughts of being frustrated, I look ahead and begin again! I've got to be faster on my leash snap and of coarse much lighter with that then with my Labradoodles and Great Dane. I'm gonna say that bigger dogs are easier to train than the tiny ones at least for me.

6:38 People who are making valid critiques of your training are not automatically "unemployed or bankers, not a dog trainer, etc., in your humble opinion," that's a fallacy in logic, you have no idea what the person's skillset is behind that comment. A person doesn't have to be a so-called professional dog trainer to make a valid point. Are you really at that point in your life where you know everything and there's absolutely nothing else you can learn from others? From the first volunteer fosters that do all the ground work of socializing, desensitizing, basic obedience, putting the dog on a strict bathroom schedule, then up to the next tier that do real world skills... 10 000 hours of training and shaping and narrowing down the pool of viable candidates for service. So ...Joel, you just said the next level of training that you need to develop. Make a channel where you train existing dog trainers, where you walk through the process of selecting, training and *testing? a dog to be able to "assist" in the training. When and how to introduce the dogs. What you expect to happen and how to get there. You kinda have to do this... because if you don't that means that you CAN'T. So develop the process and start your train the trainer program. Imagine how much good you could do for society if you could make it even a little bit repeatable.(stages maybe) *lawsuits can be avoided with waivers. (oh, and check out Canis Panther for a hybrid)

This d### measuring contest of yours is really dangerous. Good thing I don't have one, I guess... 🤷‍♀️ Went to the shelter today to volunteer again. Personally only really interested in enrichment through play for the working breed dogs. I like them. And I hate knowing they are couped up without an outlet. Family members will go to stroke the lapdogs (in case it is not obvious, I am not a fan of lapdogs). Saw this giant probable mastiff x. Although corsos are a comparatively rare sight here, I think he might have corso blood, because he is a beast. He was growling and barking, but when I refused to back away, he took cookies (dog biscuits) from my hand very gently through the wire mesh of the kennel. Going back to play with the working dog breeds and going through a very hard decision whether or not to take this dog out into the yard for exercise. If I was going to listen to you, I would film all of this and post it for clicks. Do you even care that your "dare" might get people hurt, or dogs put down? I am not going to film it for the internet, because, if I do decide to do this, all my attention needs to be focussed on the dog - not on how it will look for the camera. I have no illusions that this dog is adoptable. Honestly, it would probably be the kindest thing to put him down, because with his sheer size and weight, I would never allow him near a child with any history of (even mild) aggression. I don't think I am going to fix him to stroke my ego and build a following. I just want his day to be a little less miserable.
