ive honestly been obsessed with this game for the longest time for multiple reasons, i like the characters, i like the artstyle, i ESPECIALLY like the music and while the story is nothing to write poems about its simple and i like it that way, something i think that is worth noting is just how interesting the character dynamic between andrew and ashley actually is, aside from the incest it always seems like ashley is the evil out of the 2 and how andrew is the victim but once you really dig into it you realize that andrew is as bad if not worse, the simplest way i can describe it as is that andrew is an enabler of sorts, hes never tried to do anything about this type of behaviour from ashley even considering that the signs of it were shown really early on in their life as we see in the flashbacks, while her personality is a result of terrible parenting and the environment being pretty fucked up in general (as we see with all the advertisements and general ignorance of side characters) andrew is also one of the reasons why shes like this, its really interesting to dig into and its probably what i love most about this game, i also like the writing and humour of this game, while it is obviously edgy for the sake of being edgy i do think its the interesting kind of edgy, and while for granted the dialogue can get a bit cringe sometimes i think it fits the characters of andrew and ashley, they are mentally ill people raised in a terrible and rough environment so its only for granted that they act like this, and while the incest really is the thing this game is popular for, it kinda pisses me off because theres so much more to this game but people just dismiss it on a whim after hearing about it. yapping aside, this video is fucking hilarious and really deserves more attention, might be one of my favorite videos about this game on this platform, good job man.

thank you! man i love this comment and you encapsulate a lot about how i feel about this game and others like it in the indie game space. i think a lot of indie games get written off for their 'gimmick' which is really unfortunate, especially with character-based dynamics and storytelling, so i'm glad there's plenty of people actively enjoying how these games tell their stories and present their characters in a way other than 'haha they bang'
@susmusv34 ай бұрын
@@PolarityVEVO a reason why this game is so hated in my opinion is that people just go into the game EXPECTING to hate it, so they end up picking on everything obviously not perfect on the game and build their opinion about that, if people just went into the game not expecting anything i think they would understand it way better and maybe would end up liking it, most my friends that i have introduced this game to so far have really enjoyed the game and that just further supports my theory

Honestly i've been preety intrested in this game for the longest time now, but for bad reasons, I won't lie, it's so refreshing to see something that just breaks societal, so much murder and crazy stuff, incest too which is crazy, just a preety unique story, i'm preety intrested to see where it goes. also idk why people have such a big deal with potential incest in the game, it's not even that far off from does twos character, wouldn't even put it past them to do something like that, and also that it just isn't real.

Everyone's response to this game is either pure, naked embracement of it, or outright disgust. So am I weird for feeling sorry for these characters? Don't get me wrong, I'm not an idiot. You can't "fix" or change people, you can only influence them. But Holy Crap, I feel bad for all the characters involved.
@isdrakon98024 ай бұрын
I feel like that's the correct response, the reason Andrew and Ashley are the way they are is because of their mother and a little bit of their father. It honestly makes sense to feel bad for them

@@nickthepick8043 I'd really like to know why you don't want to vilify the mother and father who abandoned their youngest to the care of their eldest child who only had a two year difference in age
@nickthepick80434 ай бұрын
@@isdrakon9802 For many, many reasons. Firstly, it sorta reflects how I want to view my own parents on both sides, father and mother, because they started out with good intentions with wanting kids, but it just descended from there which reflects into Renee & Mr. Graves. That, and the mother did try to make amends with her son in the middle of the night. And she did keep hush-hush about the incident with Nina. From her point of view, she was trying to protect them. Whether or not the feeling was based on biological mothering instincts or something deeper is unknown. But she did it. Point being, is that she demonstrated a level of self-awareness that most often doesn't occur within parental types of a similar sort who don't see a reason to change, or only care about immediate results. Hence why she knew she was a "fuck-up". In addition, while I do not condone this, I think the reason she took out an insurance policy on her kids could have been because it was a moment of weakness. Let's not forget that their government is corrupt and has descended into decadence. I personally theorize that Toxisoda had something to do with the mental degradation of certain consumers with the corresponding blood types who drank it as children years ago, meaning Ashley and by extension Andrew can be one of the victims which could explain their anti-social behavior as children. Anyway, this may be wishful thinking on my part, but I think their parents were pressured or pushed into accepting an offer like that just to escape. Similar to how Andrew and Ashley went to cannibalism just to survive. They were both afraid of dying. Otherwise, she wouldn't have said "... I'm sorry..." over the phone with Ashley, And Ashley looked disappointed after. Showing that she isn't as bad as people think. I really appreciate these bits of humanity shining through, which is what makes me sympathize with them. Both were pushed to extremes which explains why they act and behave as the way they do, because they lack the knowledge or skills needed to stop it. As is the case with my parents, they do love me, but they lacked the knowledge/skills on how to raise me and my siblings proper. Only one of my siblings is suffering heavily from it. And if all we do is villify them, then we're in some way continuing the cycle. It's harder to walk away from that kind of simple hatred because it's so addicting. Point being, is that I desire to be a wise man, and it all starts with how we think and approach these things. I'm also sick of living in a world where we need to be stimulated and distracted from the truth that might save us.

You can figure that out from some of the paperwork in the Guards’ Room combined with the fact that the owner of the Water company that started it is also the owner of Toxisoda and a Surgeon (suspension of disbelief goes a long way). They harvest the organs from the better blood types to give transplants to the people who have had their organs ruined by Toxisoda.

Okay, I have a disagreement with your summary of the two characters at the end, but I can still respect where you’re coming from. My interpretation is thus: Andrew and Ashley are equally mentally ill, Andrew’s a sociopath from the lack of care from his parents and the fact that he had to raise Ashley (who is only 2 years younger than him). He only cares about appearing normal, and doesn’t care about the morality of his actions, only their consequences. Nina’s death didn’t make him panic because of guilt over killing her, but rather because if it were discovered, Ashley would be taken away from him. To maintain an appearance of normalcy, he even goes on to date the best friend of the girl HE HELPED KILL. And despite knowing about Ashley’s harassment of his girlfriend, not only did he do less than nothing to help, he actually tried to argue in Ashley’s favor, claiming she was “affected” by Nina’s death. Yes, Andrew’s life is worse because of Ashley, but he’s the one who’s kept her there.

The reason why i personally like this game is because it has the balls to tell the story that no other artist or company would. Everything these days is all black and white with very generic villains and simple themes, but then there's... this game. And it's utterly unfiltered story and writing. A game that touches very delicate subjects such as murder, abuse or incest and presents them in a way most people wouldn't think of. It challenges you in a way no other game is, and it makes you realize that as fucked up as it is, the things shown in the game DO happen in real life. Add to it a very dark, edgy and unfiltered sense of humor and you have a recipe for a game that shouldn't exist in this day and age, but does. It's sickening, it's gross, it's weird, it's creepy... but it's also, a breath of fresh air in the sea of generic boring horror games.

That's obviously doodoo. Nowadays there are hundreds of movies and series that are more complex than black and white. what about the boys, what about Joker? Ever heard of Killers of the Flower moon? there are so many good movies and games, you just gotta know where to look. To pretend like a little indie incest simulator is revolutionary with its narrative is a bit ridiculous.
@RailwayScholar3 ай бұрын
+ this game hasn't "challenged" anyone's views on incest, it just embraces it and caters to actual incest fetishists who probably only watch Incest hentai as well.

I agree with this totally. In the last decade (or couple of decades) media of all stripes has become exceedingly sanitized, unwilling to explore things that are uncomfortable or even *present* things that are outside or against the range of current day social/political acceptable views, at least not without hammering the viewer on the head with the prescribed common view and messaging of "THESE ARE BAD PEOPLE THIS IS BAD YOU HATE THIS YOU WILL HATE THIS". I like TCOAAL in the same way I liked Joker, it showed bad people in dark subject matter in a way that's empathetic and not super prejudiced against the characters from the director's chair. Exploring the dark side of humanity and how it comes *naturally* and is a piece of everyone in some way is pretty much a dead art that nobody really practices anymore. It's because of the current socio-political climate of having extreme kneejerk reactions, no empathy, and wanting to distance yourself from and eradicate all things that aren't "pure" imo.

So completely unrelated topic, but am I the only one who thinks that TCOAAL would mesh well in The Boys universe? Like, I feel this would be a good idea for an AU where instead of demons, the duo just get compound V cause their parents suck and need money, so not only are they are co-dependents siblings where both are really bad people, but now they have powers.

Nah fr i rlly want what you're smoking it HAS to be top tier
@sammy094sbiggestfan2Ай бұрын
nah I think I get what they're smoking. They're constantly running from their problems (murder) that they're ultimately powerless to avoid, so the only way they can actually deal with it is to use the supernatural to see threats coming and prepare. But the supernatural is 'single use', and the only way they can get more of it is to kill people, thus digging themselves into a deeper hole. You could replace the supernatural with compound V and the story remains the exact same, as V is a single use dose of some superpower (with theirs being some kind of future vision), and there's no real way of obtaining more compound V without crime.
