What Every Woman Over 50 Needs To Know About Weight Loss that you didn't learn in the last 50 years. Most of us have learned things that don't serve us well. Unlearning those in order to adapt habits that will get results we want is key. You can lose weight but not with most of the techniques you think work.

Your videos have been extremely helpful on my journey back to health. I am a 52 year-old menopausal woman and have gone through some significant health challenges over the past several years. Over the past couple of months I have really been paying attention to how the right exercise, the right food, adequate sleep, and managing stress have impacted my hormones and how essential hormone balance is in order to lose weight, especially during menopause. To the newcomer, I would say my biggest lesson is to apply all of this gradually, especially the exercise, and slowly build a daily health regimen towards optimal health. For example, I wasn't in terrible shape but I spent my first month getting back on track by walking everyday for a minimum of 20 minutes. My goal was just to move every day. Over the span of a couple of months I gradually worked myself up to a 60-90 minute walk on most days. Now I am doing strength training at home, high intensity interval walking up hills, and brisk 60-min nature walks, each a couple of times a week. I picked this combination because I do not like gyms but love the outdoors. However, while I try and have a daily plan for exercise, I always judge how I am feeling each day and let that ultimately determine what exercise I do (if any). I am a former athlete, so letting myself have the freedom to exercise at a gentle pace is not part of my identity. However, gentle and steady exercise has been so beneficial as it does not put any undo stress on my body and that has been so key for me (and the belly fat is slowly coming off!). I use heavy weights that are appropriate for my level and I work to fatigue, but I don't push through when my body is too tired to let me. Now I love to exercise most days but I never reach a point where I feel like it is too much or that I need to push through it while feeling poorly. One just has to trust that this all comes together over time, gently and slowly. Finally, while my diet has always been pretty good, it definitely needed some tweaking. By drinking more water, by gradually cutting out sugar, flour and coffee, and by reducing my alcohol intake to a glass or two of wine a week, I am feeling sooooo much better, on top of slowly losing weight. While I still have at least another 20 pounds to lose, it is the feeling better that keeps me most motivated the most, not simply what the scale says. My hope for others is that the really take your advice and expertise to heart, as your focus on hormone balance really is the key towards optimal health, especially after 50.

I don't have the time or the desire to go to the gym. Did that for years and I'm sick and tired of it. I get more exercise than I need doing my housework, walking and playing with the dogs etc.

Personally I don't have the energy to work out too often. I am exhausted all the time with all this weight I've put on over the last few years. I was always rail thin in my younger years and was at a good weight in my mid to late 30s. Now, forget it. Sweet cravings galore and they are strong. It takes all my will power to avoid sugar and sweets. I am struggling lately.

Thanks for the comment. It sounds like you may be truly burnt out. Start with dietary changes and lifestyle tweaks instead of adding exercise. Many of my clients, and self!, take time off exercise to get these things right and hormones better balanced before adding exercise. I often suggest a week or as much as a month (what I personally do annually) of fat less exercise and make sure my nutrients are sufficient, sleep, rest, and sleep are where they need to be so that the rest of the house of fitness is built on a strong foundation. Try the quiz at foreverfitandfab.com and see how those habits stack up before you exercise.

Eat once a day. Every time you eat, you raise insulin which is a fat hoarding hormone. Eat frequently and remain fat.

Odd, at this point (52 and holding) it's not so much about the scale, but how I look. Tone is a thing of the past sadly. I get confused if it's more weights I should be doing or cardio? Alas it was never even thought about yrs ago....thanks for the vid!

+bikerchick21 hi bikerchick21 - I have to chime in (this is Katy) as I am also 52 (but saying I'm around 47-48 lol) and know for me weight training is our friend!! Still burns calories but tones wonderfully. I'm in the process myself. Cardio I need mainly for stamina...so I can move about without feeling 'out of shape' or winded if that makes sense. Sooo just my 2 cents...but I'd step up the weights or resistance training...maybe even some yoga (also strengthening) for flexibility Here's hoping we can start seeing results soon!

+bikerchick21 Thanks for the comment- and yes weight training along with short intense cardio intervals and a few longer walks...to reduce stress. But nutrition is key. Dump "carbage" and eat lean protein along with veggies as your mainstay!

+bikerchick21 Started out small. I decided to trade my ice cream to those into child size. I still get to treat myself without taking in too much sugar. Dieting doesn't have to be me suffering just to get the body that I want. I just have to learn how to compromise. I started taking Weight loss green store tea a couple of weeks after I officially started my dieting and it gave me a quick jump start. Each week I get to see that I shed a pound, so in my cheat days I'd reward myself with my child sized ice cream. Everybody's happy!

+Carolyn Lambert WRONG Carolyn... you send your body the message to burn fewer calories when you eat fewer. Eat MORE of the right kind of calories and ADD JOY...stress is not going away while you have a heart rate. So add joy and balance the equation. You can create testosterone by lifting weights.
