No Marko, we just focus on the science. Depends where you store your fat as to what type of nutrition, exercise and a combiner of 7 things will help. Usually, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Are you 50 or over?

+Flipping50 I was deeply overweight, obese, after a 'hormonal pill' that would re-balance me... I went to weight watchers not expecting anything as I already was a vegetarian, a lousy one. I happened to see a video of Mercy For Animals on 'milk' that night, a 1st of November, 4 years ago... My heart missed a beat, dropped into my feet, I instantly ditched all milk above the meat (even fish) I was forcing myself to take because I thought it was 'necessary' to our body. I instantly learned about 'VEGAN' what I had never heard about before... Now I am an angry vegan for the rest of my life, lost about 40 pounds in 18 months, despite not much exercise... I am 51. GO VEGAN !

Great! Inspiration. The points are still true..for those who are struggling! I'm not saying someone can't but often with the wrong information, and old habits a woman will get stuck! Absolutely aging with optimal weight and energy are possible!

Flipping50 I'm 58 and started 10 weeks ago at 18.5 stone. I'm now 15 stone and still losing. I changed my diet and started working out with light weights and lots of reps and a few isometric exercises. My body is becoming muscular, toned with a nice shape developing. I'm aiming for 13 stone or less. I won't let my age stop me 👍

I’m 58. My wife post menopausal and 56. We read Dr Mark Hymans book, and lost 54/36 lbs respectively and kept it off. Lipid panels and all other blood work has come back absolutely perfect. Blood pressure meds gone. Arthritis much reduced. Just feel good. High energy. At least 12 hours between supper and breakfast. Sleep great. No morning fog. Keto for me thanks. Proof living it.

I absolutely agree that it is possible to lose weight after 50. I was 182 pounds at age 60 and by the time I was 61 I weighed 125 pounds using Weight Watchers and weight training with free weights. It's totally possible but I had to incorporate the weight training to counter the post-menopausal muscle loss and kick start my metabolism.

I am 55 and I have lost 22 pounds. I did it by increasing my exercise, and I eliminated gluten and wheat from my diet.I also lowered my intake of junk food and ate versions of foods I refuse to give up that have less calories,fat,sugar, and salt. The hardest change that has really helped in my weight loss was eating three meals a day. This really helped me not eat heavy dinners and it keeps my hypoglycemia in check! I either walk on my treadmill or I actually go out walking. I started thinking about how did I stay slim when I was young and I realized when I was young I walked a lot. I went back to walking and that is how I lost weight. I tried going to the gym but I just really hated it and I would work out for 6 months and only lose 3 lbs.I found walking was a lot more effective and I lose weight weekly just by walking!

I'm 52 and keep adding new challenges for myself. I started backpacking two years ago and that helped a lot, this year I started running and that's helping. Going vegan last year also helped a lot. I'm still a little overweight but I'm VERY fit. The backpacking has an interesting side effect because I backpack at 10-12K ft and there's a physiological effect that reduces grellin (sp?) production the higher you go, it starts at 8k ft. When I go over 11k I practically have to force myself to eat because I'm not hungry even though I'm moving several hours a day with 25-30 lbs on my back. I looked it up after someone else mentioned having the same affect (loss of appetite at high elevations). I can't wait for winter to be over so I can hit the trails again.

I'm a 62-year-old woman, and have lost 37 pounds since October. It's not as fast as it used to be, but it's happening. I wish older people wouldn't give up on trying to lose weight. I'm not selling anything, just counting calories, eating more nutrient-dense food, walking and beginning strength training. I do agree that adequate sleep and stress management are really overlooked components of weight loss. Also, if you have to consult anyone about nutrition, make sure it's a registered dietician. In many places, anyone can call himself a nutritionist. Scary. Great video!

Good thoughts affectivity. Sometimes a RD is the right answer. You do need to have an RD who can work outside of clinical recommendations however. We know now that calories in and calories out is not the only factor. Hormones not calories control your weight and the goal of creating a healthy environment are what makes or breaks success. That includes much more fat, protein, fiber than traditional RDAs which were written for disease prevention. We want to thrive and those functional health choices are much different than RDAs have kept up with.

Thinking about your age gives you the wrong believes in what you can do or not. Thinking about your diet puts your body in calorie storing mode. Forget about your age. Don't focus too much on your diet. Just listen to your body, eat a bit of everything and not too much of anything, stay active and live your life. That's all that's needed to be fit and slim.

Thanks so much. I just talked to my doctor today. I was having some RA symptoms, so I went vegan and stopped eating sugar, wheat and alcohol. I've also started walking for over an hour a day every other day. She said it's very hard to loss weight at this age. No sh*t! I guess because she's overweight too. Well, I will unlock this. I also told her I had a goiter and that I wanted my thyroid checked. She said that's not it. Doctors are just not good listeners so much of the time.

***** Yep, it's possible to be putting weight on on a vegan diet too. I've been vegan for almost 3 yrs and put on a bit of weight because emotional issues made me binge on sweets and carbs, etc. So now I stopped binge eating (because I recovered emotionally and I stopped watching TV) and I plan my overall calories for the day and eat in the 1600-2000 range. And I'm slowly losing weight. Calories still count, whatever diet you're on.

I tend to my flowers and have a large golden retriever dog to keep me active. I cannot lose a damn pound. At 45..np, but now at 51..nothing. I sleep 12 hours sometimes, skip ALL family meals, starve to the point I feel sick. Not one damn pound!

Well, I can vouch that things are different. Honestly, the biggest thing I notice is that if I work out strenuously, I don't lose a thing. I joined a gym, and in ywo weeks, nothing had budged, and that was 4 days a week for an hour each. Really. However, I've always counted calories when dieting, and it has always worked, even after 50. If I want to lose weight, I count calories, increase my exercise, but no strenuous exercises, and eat better choices of food, that's about it. It works for me.

Yes, lots of stress as I was still working full time and dealing with a husband turning into a grumpy grouchy old man constantly being negative with his observations of me, from my driving to how I made love! It will definitely help you lose fat and gain lean. You'll see the scale change less quickly... but the point is be healthy- and losing fat is a part of that! You need to get protein.. to fuel the lean muscle exercise will help you maintain. Exercise, aging, and lack of nutrition all contribute to breakdown of muscle so we have to be super diligent getting the right fuel, exercise, and rest to build and maintain lean tissue for longevity. Go you! Congratulations! Very exciting for you!

I am so glad you talked about the current popularity of "Bootcamp" style fitness training. It is almost impossible to find classes today that are not built around this concept in some way. I have seen people get injured because they are being asked to train way too hard and way, way, way too fast. In my personal experience, I became the fittest and leanest (at 42) in my life doing traditional weights and cardio. I had a trainer who took me through a routine. There was a little bit of interval training in there but the focus was more on weight baring exercise and standard recovery 45 sec between repetitions. The last trainer I had about 5 years ago (I'm 57 now) had me doing three sequential sets with NO rest in between. I almost threw up most sessions. And while my fitness level did increase and I lost a few pounds, I dreaded my workouts and did not stay with it.

YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT OVER 50. I'm 52 and I lost 22 kilos in a year. I tried it, when I was younger and I failed. It's not a age-problem, it's a motivation problem. I used to hate pictures of myself. After my 50th birthday-party, my friends showed me pictures. I recondnized, how fat I was. I have still a little to much weight, but I don't care, better than wrinkles! This was not easy at the beginning, but now I feel good. No diat!!! Quit the white flower and in general less carbohydrates and shugar! Walk every day 30 minutes ore more, no matter how bad the weather is! That's all. You can do it! And forget all the skiny, young Barbies in the world, nothing important to compare with!!!

At 55, my doctor told me my Blood Sugar was high (started into the T2 diabetic range). I always exercise, but tend to over eat although I didn't think so. I talked with the nutritionist/dietitian who said my diet was good but could us some tweaking (basically lower salt intake, try yogurt or similar more, and cut out all 'added sugar/fructose/etc' products which I don't consume other than an occasional white chocolate fixation). I decided to measure how many calories I actually consumed and how much I burned (metabolism and exercise). I kept meticulous records in a free software program that you can enter your food (lots of foods in the database and you measure the serving weight), take weekly body measurements for metabolism, your weight, different exercises (variety is good, keep track of time and intensity and with weight you get calorie burn) and it will keep track of all your calories. I aimed for 1000 calorie daily deficit, while still consuming around 1800 calories per day. Over a period of about 5 months, I lost 55 pounds, (25Kg), and have been stable since. My blood sugar is now in the normal range. I never realized until I actually started measuring the weight of the food and entering it into the software database, just how many calories there are in foods we eat. For me, the killer is nuts and seeds. I still like nuts and seeds, but now I know to eat small amounts over long time periods. I felt a little tired/fatigued during the first week. Now, I feel like going jogging.

I eat healthy, exercise ( although I know I need to do more ) and that needle on the scale doesn't move. So, thinking I can't win - I'll eat ice cream or something else that I shouldn't. I beat myself up about it constantly! I waste so much time and energy thinking about it. You look absolutely fabulous by the way! So - moving forward, I am going to watch more of your videos and see if I cant get motivated. Thanks for all the info!!

One very important factor that should've been included in this video is normal LIVER function. It's too much taken for granted that it's always working well in all of us but that's really not the case, especially after 50 when a lifetime of not eating as we should, having too much stress (excess cortisol can affect the liver negatively), "social drinking", taking medications, etc. cause repeated damage that it can't readily recover from. Lots of people have fatty liver and/or gallstones and don't know it, and an impaired liver cannot process sugars and fats properly making it impossible to lose weight even when we're really trying our best. An unhealthy liver will in turn affect the thyroid and adrenals and cause terrible fatigue and horrid hot flashes, night sweats and general heat intolerance. That's been my case btw, so I've learned a lot about it and through dealing with it. I got to a point where I could no longer control my weight and that made me terribly depressed. Then between last December and January I transitioned to a vegan diet while taking iodine and, more importantly, a MILK THISTLE supplement and the weight began dropping off me completely effortlessly. BUT when it ran out I didn't get more and also reduced the iodine (was short on cash) and the weight loss stalled after about 16 lbs. and even Intermittent Fasting didn't help. I also regressed to the nearly crippling level of fatigue that began plaguing me last year (but I've suffered from various degrees of fatigue for years). At first I thought reducing the iodine was responsible but it only returned my body temperature to normal and helped resolve a "paradoxical" sinus infection that had lingered for 2 months, I still remained stalled, horribly fatigued and had developed horrible hot flashes that I knew were not hormone related. Only when I felt an ache in my right upper abdominal quadrant I began thinking about my liver again and then remembered things I'd learned years ago and confirmed it by doing searches online. Long story short, I bought another milk thistle supplement, this time with dandelion root & fennel and after just one week I broke the stall, it was only 1 lb. but I was hopeful. I weighed myself again the following week (this past Monday actually) and had lost 2 more lbs. so it looks like I'm on my way again (yay!) and this time I plan to continue the milk thistle and dandelion root indefinitely, I ordered both in "bulk" online to save $$. I'm also going to stick to eating low fat because of my gallbladder, it's particularly hating non-fresh fats, earlier I had some plantain chips out of a bag and am paying for it, so no more impulsive indulgences for me! So, if any of you find you still cannot lose weight after following the advice in the video give some love to your liver, it will surely love you back!
@kvakma
@kvakma 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reminders that with an unhealthy liver, most body functions aren't "normal" and therefore giving up is not the option but, being less sensitive to difficulties & roadblocks is less stressful. Yep, about 60-70% of thyroid conversion occurs in liver & an impaired liver doesn't do things "normally". Appreciate 'Flipping 50' addressing a myriad of issues related to being healthy, fit, & looking better.

Mariana Melear Last year I first took one that I bought at one of the stores where I shop, not any known brand that I recall. Then I got Sundown Naturals Milk Thistle Xtra which also contains dandelion root, fennel and licorice. Then I bought whole seeds that I grind myself (the thought being they would be fresher that way) and dandelion root powder, but perhaps this way taking much more is necessary, perhaps the ones in supplements are processed to have more silymarin in the amount contained in a capsule because I haven't felt it's been helping as much.

Try not eating btwn 7pm and 10am. If u cut out on sugars, including carbs, it's fairly easy n keeps getting easier. Just don't go low fat! Over time, u can do a longer fast and cut back to 2 meals a day. If u don't exercise, start wlking and/or doing the 'senior' 15 min exercise videos. There are good 15 min walking videos on You Tube, too! Dance to your fave songs, too!

Funny, it sounds like I wrote this. My weight has been climbing since my 40 s. I know keto helps to lose and balance the weight. I don't like much exercise but I am very active. Breakfast is my down fall cause I don't want eggs every day just a small bowl of cereal. For me to lose I would probably have to live on a carrot, cucumber and lettuce plus 1 egg. And that is a hard way of living cause I use to be slim and busy so I never had to watch my weight much. I am discouraged, I wish I was rich and could afford a food and exercise coach. Or even to join a good diet club. I have gone to a few diet clubs but they seem ineffective for me. HELP ME!!

~hey~ from Florida. I'm 52, and regularly moderately active as a retail cashier. I have gained a bit of girth over the past year. I thought that IM would work, but my crazy retail schedule won't allow it.... and being on my feet for that long makes me not want to do my old go-to powerwalks - mostly because of tiny foot arch tumors/scars and Achilles pain - and I don"'t do any belly exercise because of a possible persistant hiatal hernia. At 66 I compete in Cycling Time Trials, a race against the clock. My training is demanding with workouts 5 days a week, usually 100+ miles per week during that time, using power meter zones as the metric. I eat about 12-1500 K a day and still can't loose the weight. I eat no refined sugars, my diet is low in Carbs, with a healthy amount of protein and fats.I am currently 200lbs @ 5'9", a weight my body is very comfortable with. My resting HR is around 46, my daily HR around 60's. Blood pressure is exceptional. I know I'm very healthy, but for every 1lb loss I gain 7 watts of power, which is monumental on climbs. I need to drop to 180 before Nationals in October of 2017. Any suggestions?

The comments following this highly informative video are a good example of the current state of "weight loss wars". There are people who eat poorly and fail to exercise, and so they gain weight. When they adopt a healthier diet and exercise regimen, the weight comes off. So they say "Losing weight is easy! Just eat less and exercise more! I'm living proof!" But then there are people who eat healthy and exercise regularly and are still overweight. When they seek help, they're told "eat even less, and exercise even more!" So they do. And they become hypothyroid, their metabolism slows, their adrenals down-regulate, and their body essentially goes into energy conservation mode, just as this blogger describes. And they sink into despair. Scientists and health care practitioners who specialize in weight loss see this all the time. But those for whom weight loss is easy simply reject this out of hand. They assume everyone else's body is just like theirs. So those who say they can't lose weight must just be lazy, gluttonous liars. They also reject these people and their dilemma because they find this truth too threatening, as in "You mean I could do all the right things and STILL get fat?" I applaud this blogger for speaking to the millions of people who do everything right and still suffer from overweight or obesity.

So I’m way out of shape and overweight (60lbs). My goal when I turned 50 was to get all that changed. Well, at my 50th birthday party I was dancing and ended up with a torn meniscus, several fractures and a previously repaired ACL starting to tear. Now my doctor says I need a total knee replacement. I’m unable to o function now and in pain the majority of time. My question is, what now? I can’t exercise (or at least exercise the way I’ve always exercised before, not that I did very much of that before) but I need to lose weight in order to have the surgery. I’m ashamed I let myself get like this and not sure if I can do anything about it now. Can you offer me any advice? I have joined Weight Watchers. At least I can control what goes in my mouth. Any help will be welcomed and appreciated!

Every person and every BODY is unique. What is true for you may not be applicable to everyone else. For instance, I must take a medication that causes the metabolism to slow. As a result, most people (including myself) on this medication gain 15-20 pounds or more. I now have one meal a day and exercise just to avoid gaining more and to maintain my current weight. Always good to remember that very seldom does one size fit all. wishing you all wellness.

I have been researching how to get more potassium as I have high blood pressure. I just don't think its doable to get your daily amount. I need to lose a little bit of weight so I can't eat too much. Then I find people are talking about oxolates! and how that's bad. I'm so confused. The more I find out the more I'm confused about what to eat. I thought I had a great diet. I hit ten a day veg, salad and fruit. I eat grains and pulses every day. Drink water. Don't smoke. Drink alcohol. I have an active job that gets my heart rate up (cleaner) I exercise until I'm out of breath for 10 - 30 mins every day. I find exercise difficult as I have painful bunions, bad knees and wrists. I have been weighing my food - all of it. I am always under my calories. I don't know why I'm overweight with high blood pressure. I'm so good. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong.

.... "There' no such word as CAN'T." I CAN EASILY lose weight at age 82 and despite serious "thyroid issues". I am on thyroxine having had a thyroidectomy operation and taking Thyroxine which frequently results in weight gain. I put on a stone in three years which did not appeal to me at all, but a KETOGENIC lifestyle and some INERMITTENT FASTING has enabled me to lose the weight and keep well. Why is it so important to loose weight? Loosing weight seem so misleading in many cases. There is a big difference between being big or being fat. There is not much you can do if you are big and healthy. Face reality and play rugby. If you are overly fat then you may change size but not necessarily weight as muscles are heavier than fat. Your waist line can improve while your weight increase and that’s a good thing. In any case this is my nickel on the subject. I totally agree with every thing that was said in the video. I simply find it so saddening to see so many women trying to loose weight as an objective instead of being strong active and healthy.

Hi Laura, It varies by the client. For someone with any adrenal fatigue.. not at all. For midlife women with good energy.. this is really just good eating but most don't do it: 3 meals no snacks and at least 12 hours overnight. Beyond that, we monitor blood sugar levels (for stress) and gradually increase playing with 13, 15 and 17 hours (trying to do it with early ending to meals NOT fasting through morning - women do better eating high protein in the morning vs fasting through it. Dr Mindy Pelz and Cynthia Thurlow also might be great resources on fasting for you. Most importantly though... Exercise FED!

I weighed 163 in 2014 and now 122 but have weighted the same since May. I have fibromyalgia and my doctors pushed me for 7 yrs to get in the gym but I was afraid of the pain level. Best thing i ever did my pain levels have decreased. Also, told that my calorie intake should be 1200 there is no way I can eat that many calories not on a healthy diet. If i can get 800 daily that is a good day and it is trying really hard to get that much into me hard. I am a healthy eater and eat three meals a day. My question is losing all that weight I have lose weight every where but my lower belly i just cannot lose weight there. I know over the years weight gain and lose lose skin but there is still fat on my lower belly. I am limited to the machines i can use due to my deg disc disorder and fibro. I do go on the bike and do at least 40 min go from level 3 to 6 up and down. Told i can not go on the tread mill any more and find it hard on my legs due to the fibro the nerves on the eliptical. Any suggestions to help me..I am so discouraged with that ugly lower belly and no weight loss over the last 3 months and i go to the gym 3-5 days a week. I do some strenght training also.
