UTIs (or urinary tract infections) are bacterial infections in the urinary system, whether that’s the kidneys, ureter, bladder, or urethra. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what UTIs are and how you can treat them.
UTIs don’t cause symptoms for everyone. But if you do experience UTI symptoms, you might notice a strong need to urinate that doesn’t go away, and a burning sensation when you urinate. You may also urinate more often, and your urine could look cloudy, smell strongly, or contain blood. A common symptom for women is pelvic pain in the middle of the pelvis, as well as around the pubic bone. If a UTI affects your kidneys, you might get pain in your back or side, or experience nausea and vomiting, a high fever, shaking, or chills. UTI treatments are typically antibiotics that target the bacteria responsible for the infection, stop them from growing, and kill them off.
