When your parents didn’t grow up in a affectionate household it’s a bit difficult for them to say “I love you” I say I love you to my mom all the time and I obligated her to say it back 😅 My dad maybe I said it when I was little but since never, even hugging him I can’t - weird 😭

@MelanieCK Жыл бұрын
My parents were married, but weren’t very affectionate to each other. My mom was to us, but my dad was an old fashioned provider who showed his love by doing everything for us. If I called in the middle of the night because I fell asleep in the train, passed my station and there was no train back, he would pick me up. When he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer he became very ‘warm’. For me it was a now or never kinda thing. So giving him a kiss when I went to see him and when I left, holding his hand, giving him a hug. I’m glad we had the time to show him our love for him and he could receive it. Even if it’s awkward AF, just give it a try. Maybe not an “I love you father”😄 but a “love ya!”. We all love to hear we’re loved❤️

I never had an issue telling either of my parents that I love them, but I don't think I used to say it every time we talked until after my dad had a major heart attack in 2020. From that point forward up until his passing this past December I definitely tried to make it a point to always make sure I told him I loved him at the end of any interaction because I never really knew when the last time I would speak to him would be. In retrospect this is always true for everyone so I try to tell my loved ones that I love them any time we talk no matter what. It's been a few months but I still look at pictures and old belongings of my Dad and tell him I love him and I tell my mom any time I speak to her as well. Life is just too short and I'd hate to think how I would've felt if I didn't know that the last words I said to my dad were that I loved him.

As a girl, saying “I love you” to both my parents is never an issue. Growing up though we (me and my younger sisters) had to set the tone for that. Because our parents are from the Caribbean (Haiti) and that wasn’t a thing for them. My dad never told his mom that he loved her and she didn’t tell him that. Same for my mom. So it’s definitely a learned behavior that we had to drill into our parents and now the new generation in our family says it like it’s natural. Both boys and girls. ❤

Grew up saying good night and I love you to my parents and siblings(1 sis, 1 bro, myself) Now I’m married and I do the same with my wife, and whenever I speak/see my parents it always ends with a love you 👍🏽 The generational thing though. Guaranteed your grandparents were the same with your parents, if not worse tbh 🥴 so it’s understandable why some parents have a tough time saying I love you to their children

As a girl, I grew up in a very loveless home...I can remember nearly each time I told my mom I loved her, it was very very few times she did not say it first except for maybe once or twice...my dad I don't recall it, but once. He was dying. I would be starting at my mom (who had cancer and was dying) begging myself to just be brave enough to tell her. I couldn't do it for some reason. Be thankful if you hear those words, I'm sure she loved me, she just was so overwhelmed with life and just trying to survive...so I forgive her, BUT I now have a hard time saying that..I have a 17 year old son who I struggle to say those words to, he struggles with it also. I have made sure that with my 7year old...I say it all the time, it's made easier because she says it first ALOT, but it's traumatic to feel so unloved.

So really weird thing happened, after I moved out from my parents house, about 3 years ago, my dad started saying "I love you" and also giving hugs everytime I would go over the house to see the parents. For my mom its normal but when my dad says it, i'm still not use to it. I guess after the pandemic and stuff and see so many people pass away its changed his outlook on being emotional and open has changed but even now when he says it i'm like "ewww!" but I do make sure I say it back.

But, just Saturday, I saw him for the first time since Thanksgiving of last year, we went to an Atlanta United game together. He dropped me back off at home and we dapped up and he told me he loved me and I told him I loved him and it felt nice although I don’t really recall us doing it much when I was younger. He’s started to be more affectionate since his father passed so it didn’t feel unnatural but it’s not “common” either.
