I would actually put goldfish in the nibblers category. Cuase they really aren't that bad.in fact most plants are safe with them.the only plants they really seem to touch are soft stem plants.also their digging behavouir can be managed by putting river stones around the base of the plants so they can't up root them. I know this to be the case cuase I have done planted goldfish tanks.
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! What kind of plants would you recommend for a goldfish tank?
@briannaharter44115 жыл бұрын
so far I've had success with amazon swords,java ferns,anubias,crypt wendtii,java moss,those bulb plants you get from multi packs and dwarf aquarium lillies. basically anything with thick leaves and decent sized roots is goldfish safe.you can also test plants by trying to rip them apart.the easier it is to rip them apart the less likely they are to survive in a goldfish tank.

The first fish I added to my planted tank are Buenos Aires Tetras. It has only been about 5 hours and they have been nipping at the java ferns, but just the tips of the leaves, and don't seem too interested after the first bite. Luckily, most of my plants are of the stronger variety on this list, so I'm too concerned. The biggest issue I have read with this fish, is they eat constantly, so if you're not feeing them 3 time a day with a varied diet, they will eat what they can find. Given this video is 3 years old, this could be a nice update if someone reads the comments. I will have to see how they do over the next month or so and have to add more.

My mystery snail doesn't let me have any carpeting plant. And he likes to eat all the new plants that I introduce into the aquarium. He wont eat the ones that are well established, but the new lush plants that are not yet well rooted 😅 Sometimes I have to put my snail into "time out" for a week or two, in another aquarium, to give a chance for my new plants to settle before he eats them.
@atcaleb5 жыл бұрын
Are you feeding your snails? Are they in acidic water? Hungry snails will find food if you dont feed them and in acidic water mine like to chew stems of leaves just to the point the leaf dies, then they come back a day or 2 later and finish eating the dying leaves. At ph of 7.8 my snails do not touch the plants, I feed them 2x a week- green beans and after 12 hours or so I remove the leftovers. I also toss in the cores from lettuce. I put them in raw, green beans go in the tank right from the freezer. Try it, wont hurt to try.
@sarav97985 жыл бұрын
@@atcaleb I feed zuccini to my snail. I have tried giving him many other vegetables but he doesnt seem to like them. I also tried with the like veggie wafers you give to plecos, but he never touched them. It seems like sometimes he just wants the plants, as the zuccini is floating there, untouched, and he goes after the plants. 😅 The PH is usually around 7.8-8 btw. That being said, I havent tried with green beans specifically, so I will give them a go to see what happens haha.

@@sarav9798 I've tried wafers too and didnt see much interest only a mess a few hours later. I am so attached to my snails I put them in their own tank, no fish allowed. When I took out the fish the snails changed a lot. 2-3" antenna length and the snails never go in their shells anymore. Sometimes I drop veggies in and all the snails on the glass will let go and all the snails float to the bottom, it's so cool even tho I think I've scared them and kinda feel bad for it. Only other thing I remember doing was I left for a week and left the tank light off and my curtains stayed closed and nerite snails started to lay eggs and haven't stopped since. I have a ton of colors and types, all freshwater snails, no assassins. I've bought 8 mystery snails, orange blue white and brown and everyone is male. I'm watching the local stores for a female but I haven't seen one in 3 months since I learned how to sex them. Goldfish are grazers and will comb threw sand and small light weight substrate to avoid this just buy substrate that is kinda heavy and bulky. I noticed a Kuhli loach towards the end of the video. Back in the early 90s when we started our journey into aquariums. We had a group of Kuhli loaches. Those little wrigglers won't eat your plants, but they will dig around and burrow under the substrate, thereby uprooting your plants. Back in the day, we had them in my Dad's 55 gallon and he was not happy with those little loaches. He's a sailor from the old Navy when you could still physically discipline the insubordinate. So he likes his order and efficiency. They truly are the last of the greatest generation. When something like a group of Kuhli loaches starts to mess up his tank, it begins to wear on him rather quickly. The tanks were suggested by our doctor to help my Father alleviate some stress - not create more. So they were traded back to the LFS after a few months. Keep up the good work my friend. *Apologies for the double spacing. KZbin is aware of the internal error.

I do have a nice spot of grass like plant that I keep in an area for them since they tend to go for that the most. Then they eat carpet plant, but after having them in my tank for a while they are starting to leave the carpet plant alone and just going for grass when they feel like they need to. In my experience, all livebearers are willing to peck at plants for algae and may end up taking bits of them with them. Roots of floating plants are also a really easy snack. Even my tetras went after smaller roots of my frogbit when I had cut back on their feeding schedule. I think the safest bet is to make sure your fish have enough plant matter in their diet/are being fed enough, and then you won't have any problems! My bn pleco likes to munch on the spongey undersides of frogbit, but other than that he leaves the plants alone. Ramshorn snails only touch decaying plant matter, although mine love the frogbit.. I think what I'm realizing here is that frogbit is kind of ideal for aquariums. If I miss a feeding at least I know nobody will starve haha

I've had 2 bristle nose in my planted tank for 3 months and I haven't noticed any harm to my swords. They do a nice job cleaning, I see them on the leaves of all my plants. Maybe in a year I'll see different and because of your video I'll know to watch my plecos

Cory cats are no goes with carpeting plants or anything that is freshly planted. They just bulldoze and up root anything that is not weighted down

You know, I had cory catfish, and they didn't really bother my plants once they were a little more established. Just put some rocks around the base of your newly planted plants to protect them. I don't have an experience with corys and carpeting plants though; sorry!

My list from my personal experience; Bristle nose catfish Siamese Algae Eaters (This 2 are fine when small but as they get mature they are bottomless pits ...you can throw as much veggies as u want or algae wafers at them ...they will still eat your plants when they are large... including Anubis’s & Java Fern)

My dwarf gourami chow plants at the base or just pull my water wisteria right out. I THINK it might have to do with territorial issues because they only pull plants in certain spots.

Many gouramis (and it varies by species) will tear apart plant leaves to add to their bubble nests. I had a Pearl gourami do that to some fine leaved plants.....So not eating them, and it's situational(male making a nest in the "mood") but still not completely safe all the time
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I never thought about them using plants to build their bubble nests but that totally makes sense.

My goldfish even chewed up the roots of my pothos ... so now my tank, which was once a planted tank with what I thought were goldfish safe plants is barren except for mossballs

I had a dwarf Gourami that I had to remove from my tank because he was nibbling my rotalla wallichii and my amazon frogbit. I also had anubias and bucephalandra but he didn’t touch those. I was upset because he’s such a beautiful fish. Now I play safe so I only have ottos and cherry shrimp

My plants never seemed to do well in a guppy tank. Just your normal cheap plants are trimmed down although i dont know how as i have never actually seen them bite the leaves

Interesting... might be worth posting some pics or video on a Facebook aquarium group or planted tank forum to get more eyes on the problem and see if anyone has any advice. Good luck and let me know what you discover!

I had yoyo loaches absolutely destroy all of my plants, no roots, no leaves, just then floating stems. Caused a big nitrite spike that I had to do an annoying large water change, rehome the loaches, and rebuy and replace the plants. So I got a Rose and Mango sword, java ferns, and a small carpeting plant whose name i cant remember as I'm typing this. Got it replanted today!

@@fuegosthekid3200 none of the fish nip at the angels. The ba tetras swim together and do not nip at the angels. . I've never had fin nipping and my angels have beautiful find.

My mystery snails love to eat my new shoots of my jungle val. They are not hungry either. They get algae wafers, zucchini, pellets etc. I'm overfeeding them to try and stop it but man they're killing me with the water changes and cleaning because of it

The only fish I didn’t research before I bought them were mollies. Soon after I put them in my tank, I see one of them nibbling on a plant, and I’m thinking “You little bastard…” Woke up the next morning and most of the roots from my top water plants were gone. They’re on thin ice right now!! Might trade them in for a plant or two at the LFS out of spite…lol…Kind of irks me I made a big deal about getting plant safe fish while I was there and no one said mollies could be an issue…
