What Genshin's Alternative Outfits Do RIGHT (from a design perspective)

Reviewing the updated designs for Amber, Jean, Rosaria, and Mona that were added during Genshin Impact's 2.4 update. In general I found them to be well designed and personally really like what they bring the game.

I know i might be stretching it a bit but i hope mihoyo add regional costume/clothes for the Traveller. You know with Liyue it has some Chinese elements on the clothes but just enough to make it unique from the rest, same as well for Inazuma. And whether if it's Sumeru with some Incan, Mayan, or Egyptian style of clothing or Fontaine with its I guess Venetian or French style of clothes to add to Traveller's style. I think that'd be really cool

Rosaria's alternate skin reminds me of those battle/warrior nuns from 40k warhammer which is badass. Her OG outfit was more of a nun cosplay stripper from the angels tavern than a rebellious assassin nun. I agree that jeans alt skin makes her look more dignified, prestige, strong and visually represented more as the acting grandmaster. They couldve done better for mona's alt skin and never liked her OG costume. She's portrayed as an astrologer from fontaine that is broke but simplistic. I dont really see it from her OG costume.

I love Rosaria’s new outfit to be honest. When I first saw her I didn’t even know she was a nun, but the new outfit definitely shows that off better, while still straying from the typical formal style the other nuns wear.

Yes, I am not a big fan of her original outfit since it make her look more like a pole dancer than a assassin creed character. I prefer her new one since it would make sense for her to wear it running through the forest protecting other nun like Barbara form wolfs, wild boar of treasures hoarder like her lore suggests.

I prefer the new one as well since it's far more modest yet still outlandish and unique in a good way. My biggest issue with the original design is definitely the fishnets which personally makes her look like a stripper and that made me extremely reluctant to build/use her despite having her at C6.

It's like Rosaria's new outfit is the nuns making her that outfit and then Rosaria secretly made adjustments to it haha. So it's a best of both worlds though, she looks like a nun and at the same time a sneaky assassin character. As much as I like seeing her thighs hehe and...backside. Her new outfit looks gorgeous still and I'd prefer that more than the OG one.

And when we get to Beidou and Ninguang and Chongyun we can immediately see a theme or air of importance from these characters while Yanfei is just fire=red

And seeing as she's presumably one of the well-renowned individuals in Liyue (meaning rich-rich) her outfit doesn't really speak her role. Plus they could've made her dragon scales more intentional than just having them placed on her sides and hands. Out of all the female characters in-game, she's the one with the least amount of clothing on her - it just looks like scraps of fabric tied around and onto her.

Well. Even though she doesn't look like a lawyer her design shines on too many things to throw it out to use a more traditional design. From her silhouette being the CLEANEST to the ideal color pallete of complimentary red colors with brave jade pieces, I'd say rn she's one of the best designs of 4 stars. Whilst I can't disagree that lawyer wouldn't go out like that, I can say that it's like arguing that sucrose would be wearing the biggest hoodie bc she is a bit shy. Let's hope her changes will be good

I like all of them, but I think I'm gonna keep Amber's default outfit on most of the time. It just feels more right to go adventuring in the simpler outfit that'll hide the dirt better with all the brown. Though I have the new outfit on her for Lantern Rite, then it kinda it feels like she's a diplomatic envoy that needs to look her best while she's wandering around the city.

Her traveling talent is being able to spot Liyue specialty items which means that she is active and outgoing even outside of Liyue Harbour? She also feels like a jester. Jumping around and throwing fire balls before finally showing her "academic side" by stamping the enemies. So it's kinda in character.

I think Mihoyo did rather well with these outfits. Obviously the reason behind their existence is not good, censorship no matter how small is always bad, but the decision to do some slight changes to the base outfit to give them a variant one is great. They could have easily taken the lazy route and stayed with the censored main outfits, but they were better than that, and while I don't use most of them, I actually like Mona's variant more than her normal outfit.

This is an optimistic aspect of the incident, it’s nice to see characters have more outfits to represent their personalities. But as a CN server player I just can’t get over the fact that mihoyo was forced to make these redesigns, it happened on such short notice that the changes were made the same day as 2.4 was out, led to the fact that almost everyone in CN community was angry and frustrated, everyone was talking about it and no one wanted to pay attention to how beautiful enkanomiya is. I just hope that any change on the characters they make in the future, is because they want to, not because they have to.

This is how i see them: Amber and Rosaria: On the clock uniforms. Mona: Broke but she has to change clothes. Jean: Formal dress for diplomatic meetings. On future outfits discussion, considering the issues that certain government has, the ones that has the most potencial to get one are: Fishl, Lisa, Yanfei and Yoimiya. On the same note but more of a "maybe" are Ganyu, Xiao and Kaeya. Outside of that issue maybe the following: - Noelle: I still remember that KFC artwork, she looked gorgeous. A more maid looking outfit would be nice. - Diluc: He is... plain. Yes that is his character personality but man he is REALLY is plain, give the man a bit more personality. Or that KFC outfit, he looked pretty good there. - Venti, Zhongli, Raiden, AKA all archons: Their archon suits. Everyone want them to have those and they should REALLY do. - Xinyan: she needs a bit of love but personally a loose hair version would look way better. - Traveler: I know they said they wont do it because plot but... CMON! Any traveler would use the clothes of the places they visit. - Tartaglia and future Fatui characters: On their official Fatui uniforms. If Jean has one, they should also. - Sayu, Klee, Qiqi and Diona: They could be capitalizing on their cuteness or comic relieve further more. Sayu bulky payamas, Klee a dodoko suit, Qiqi herb collecting and Diona bartender. - Hu Tao and Kokomi: Casual outfit. Im really curious what would they wear when they are off the clock.

Nothing in Kaeya's tone nor speech lines in-game denotes anything of such. If anything, he looks more like a gigolo/playboy to me. With all that being said, he needs a formal attire like how they did to Amber and Jean. actually, there is a basis for Mona's OG outfit looking like that... look up a female stage magician outfit, and possibly specifically the DC superheroine Zatanna Zatara (another character with that same design inspo). you'll see that she consistently has the same kinda thing going on on her bottom half, leotard over tights. also, if you count her twintails as lop-eared bunny ears, Mona also looks like a playboy bunnygirl, which fits in the sense of rabbits being closely associated with the moon in eastern asian countries in general

About Jean still getting fresh air under her pits At C2, her normal attack speed increases for a few seconds after you deal damage to an opponent with her E. This makes her the fastest sword normal attacker in the game. She needs to have her shoulders loose and free to make aesthetics match mechanics But this is of course only speculating Mihoyo's intent

Mona's new skin matches the style of swimsuit that Barbara's summer skin has, so the swimsuit vibe is still there. Also, Jean's partial sleeves are sticking to a specific aspect of the genshin deisgn language; detached sleeves are associated with active young women. Other characters who have this design element are Mona, Barbara, Diona, Old Rosaria, Yanfei, Shenhe, Ganyu, Xinyan with a minor modification, and Sara, Kokomi, Keqing, and Ningguang sharing a modification where the sleeve is shorter with a piece of fabric hanging off of it. Additionally, each region so far has a variation on a base npc design with poofy shorts and the puffed sleeve variant of the detached sleeve. Diona's outfit draws from this npc design to an extent, actually.

On mona's outfits. Her first outfit looks like they went all in on the hydro aspect of her character, while adding embellishments that signify that she's an astrologist. Her new outfit looks like they focused more on the astrologist part of her character. Her being hydro was never the focal point of her character, which is why i think i prefer this outfit rather than her first one.

when it comes to mona’s alternate fit i’ve got to say that while i don’t dislike it i also can’t bring myself to completely like it either. i like the way her clothes were sectioned and ultimately like the change but i dislike how crowded her outfit comes off as. imo it takes away from the “simplistic” look her og outfit seemed to be going for. there are just certain things about it that i don’t like so i just choose to use her og outfit instead

They can do the same thing, but how they engage with activities and their expectations are completely different. Yanfei isn't a lawyer because she doesn't represent anyone or any party. @@salceds If you view a busy design from further away, it only gets busier, since you see a ton of stuff happening, all clumped up together. It's not like your draw distance on a character is the 3 metres of the maximum zoom out of the camera, the details don't suddenly disappear.

Mona's case might be slightly different because the lines on her top aren't suggesting the straight horizontal booty shorts like it does. But anyway, my point still stands, the overdesigned aspect is intentional so they could be interesting at any angle.

@@salceds It's not a matter of interest, it's a matter of clutter. Of course adding more things will make it more interesting, but there's a fine line between intricacy and a jumbled mess and while new Mona's design does provide nice new details (the hat underside being my personal favourite), I really do not like what they've done with the midriff. Not in comparison to the old one, rather on its own, it is far too busy. It's _overdesigned._ It's not a portrait that lets you draw the face with plenty of detail and then fade out the rest for the brain to fill in the gaps, it's a whole design of a character where every part matters, and if you stuff so much detail into the torso, which has no real reason to be the main focus of the design, it is distracting and all the small segmentation done by the golden accents, with the addition of the new thigh highs' hem, does not help in the slightest. I'm judging it based on how well it performs as a design, not on how much I like it, I don't have a preference for either of her outfits. And again, while it achieves some good things, others are just too much.

The interesting thing about the censorship is, that I personally feel like it actually opens up design space in a lot of ways for the designers of Genshin. While yeah, we probably won‘t see new characters with the sexiest designs ever, the sexiness can also be a hindering factor in a lot of designs, because sexiness sells and of course they want to sell their characters as well as they can. The characters are designed to be sexy and the character being sexy and attractive is probably one of the main goals a design has to achieve to become official. This limits design space big time, but most of the community don‘t seem to understand this. It‘s not like all of the designs we currently have are the perfect representation of the characters, it‘s more like the designs being specifically made for the target audience. It‘s really interesting how character designs might actually become better and more detailed through the whole censorship.

As much as I personally love the new designs (and how they get rid of some character design pet peeves of mine) I really hate the reason why they were done in the first place. Genshin is such an amazing game and you can tell that Mihoyo wants to do so much, but is restricted by their garbage government. However, I do appreciate that the artists did their best to add more to the new designs rather than just filling in "problematic" areas. Though I really don't know why Amber was changed. The others I can see the reasoning behind it, but Amber's is literally just a pallet swap. Ah well, maybe they just took the chance to give her a bit more of a fancy look rather than any censorship demand.

Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed the design breakdowns. Lots of things and details I hadn’t seen before! As concerned as I am about CCP censorship (and I am very, very concerned) as much does it anger me when people call female characters getting remotely normal clothing “censorship”. Full disclaimer: I am *incredibly worried* about actual censorship coming to Genshin Impact. I’m worried how these party politics will censor what we can say (it is already not possible to type out “Taiwan” or “Hong Kong” in the chat) and influence the story telling and character writing to subtly or not so subtly spout elements of the CCP’s propaganda and regressive world view. But *the current redesigns are literally only making the female character’s clothes more “everyday”-like* just like the vast majority of male characters in this game are “""covered up”"" to degrees that are completely normal for men in everyday life. What happened here is a *very ironic case of “a broken clock is right twice a day”* on both parties’ sides. The CCP’s ideals are evidently incredibly regressive and conservative. But Mihoyo’s hypersexualised character designs are not their forward-thinking opposite, it’s the hyper-objectified equivalent. They are two sides of the same coin. The one propagates hyper-modesty and “traditional” values with women’s sexuality being seen as “private property” (husband), the other is “modern” objectification that postulates women’s sexuality belong to the public. They are publicly “shared”, e.g., by fans “bonding” over their favourite "waifu” that they collect based on how much their sexualized designs appeal to them. When Mihoyo redesigned the characters, they did not go full “traditional conservative modesty” because that would uproot the basis of their entire game but could not stay with their current level of sexualisation either. Ironically this led to designs that are *neither modest nor as sexualised* as before. Esp. Jean and Amber look relatively normal now. (Although I wish they had given Jean a normal blouse. The shoulder-less sleeve idea looks as if they were obsessively trying to keep at least some level of fan-service even though the design just doesn’t come together. A normal blouse would have looked a lot better.) And even with the redesigns Rosaria and Mona are still not dressed as everyday-ish as most male characters. Mona is still unequivocally on the sexual(ised) side. It’s not like they are suddenly wearing Sunday church dresses or potato bags. Whenever someone points out that the female character designs in Genshin are incredibly hypersexualised (whereas the male characters are sexy because of their coolness, their attitude, or their strength etc.) people think they are making a compelling counter-argument by replying “well duh it’s a sexy waifu collection game after all” but it’s not the well-thought-out refutation they think it is. Rather, it’s a confession of failure. It says a lot about someone if their "waifu" primarily appeals to them because of ridiculously sexualised outfits and high heels, double D cups with trampoline-esque jiggle physics, ditzy run animations and butt shots whenever they fly. And if you were to take these things away - if they looked like normal people as the male characters do and not like sexy dolls - they’d lose interest in them. This is especially frustrating with characters that are otherwise really strong and have a lot of authority. It’s as if the more powerful a female character is, the more she needs to be sexualised as a means to counteract this power. To make her palatable and most importantly: non-threatening. Beidou has canonically slain one of the most dangerous sea dragons all by herself. She runs a fleet of pirate ships and is a very unladylike, brash (but kind-hearted) woman, who loves to fight a good fight and drink a good drink (and drinks very sloppily at that - see her idle animation). She also runs around in a leotard with huge jiggly breasts and high-heels. Nothing of her outfit even remotely conveys her actual, canonical character. As if the player base couldn’t be head over heels for Beidou if she actually looked like she is described. If she was a male character, she’d probably wear something like Kaeya. How is that not also attractive on a woman. I’d probably fall in love three times at once if she looked like that. Raiden Shogun is a highly-esteemed warrior and an archon so powerful and scarily threatening she can engulf a whole island in a thunderstorm. She also has the most ridiculous cleavage (her jiggle physics kill me) from which she draws a sword in a close-up cutscene during each burst. Shenhe is a “damsel of devastation” who constantly threatens to beat people up that annoy her and carries so much bloodlust in her soul it has to be bound with adepti magic. She also wears a skintight suit with extra shiny a** cheeks. Etc. The less smooth a female character’s personality is in this game, the more sugary sweetness or spicy hotness the devs poor over her to “balance it out”, anticipating that otherwise the average waifu collector couldn’t stand them for being “too much”, whereas were they male characters they’d be the epitome of coolness.

You seem to be implying that showing any amount of skin or form-fitting clothing is inherently sexual, in terms of outfit design most of them look entirely normal to me, and I'm saying this as a woman myself. It hardly comes across as hypersexualized compared to many other anime-styled games. I mean, showing shoulders being fanservice? Maybe, but have you seen how incredibly common shoulderless outfits are in real life? What is so strange about that? Also, how does sexuality make a character non-threatening? Can't a woman who is confident in her own attractiveness still be threatening and powerful? Why does one's position in power determine how much skin they should be showing? I agree that saying the game is a "sexy waifu collection game" is a stupid argument, as it also ignores that it has a mixed gender cast that would appeal to those who like men as well, but this does not mean that the new designs are objectively better. It still is a result of a regressive conservative viewpoint on what is acceptable for women's appearances. And I'm biased towards her, but Beidou looks beautiful as she is. I love her personality and I believe her outfit is perfectly suitable for a fictional pirate, but if she wore an outfit like Kaeya's, yea that would still be attractive- but she'd also still show plenty of cleavage, and I can't help but wonder if that would still be seen as fanservice. The high heels is about the only thing I can agree on that might be silly about her design, cause those are hard to run in! Heck I can barely walk in those, I don't know how other people manage it, but that's just me lol. (To balance out that bit of unrealisticness, might I suggest the game also be open to giving male characters heels?) Also I hope this reply didn't come across as overly combative, it is just that although I can see where your viewpoint is coming from (trust me, I used to feel the same way before realizing I had a lot of unnecessary self-hatred about sexuality in general) I feel it can do more harm than good in some cases. And ultimately, designers should be free to make whatever kind of game they want, if they want to have attractive characters they should be able to do that, I just usually advocate for having that attractiveness being distributed over all genders in the cast to make it fair. It should not be seen as shameful. You aren't required to agree, but I felt like giving my thoughts. I wish you a good day.

Got very mixed feelings about Jean's new skin. I was hyped for these kind of changes for her, and I love the shape of the new clothes, but I think the new colour palette really pales in comparison to the old one. The Navy blue of the old skin is what made her look official to me; the new greenish blue just feel awkward to me. I also find it it doesn't contrast as much with the teal jewellery and the red accents, red which I'm really sad was toned down that much. Then there's the chest piece. That huge black spot stands out so much, it doesn't feel natural. I'd rather it was white with black lapels. The last one is a nitpick and can't quite explain it, but something about her arms make me sad. Maybe it's because of the pure black fabric that drowns the details of the geometry, maybe it's because the armour now has two separate colours for the arm and hand...

Great points you made there! Also, ye, I agree, I barely noticed Amber's redesign. My sister told me Amber got a redesign and I had to take a closer look to notice. Honestly, Rosaria and Jean are tied in my fave redesins cuz Jean just looks so formal yet practical, like she could work at the office but run out without a costume change i shes needed in the field. Rosaria actually looks like a nun and I love the skin description that her fellow sisters actually made her outfit. Like ye, I get that rosaria is supposed to be rebellious and doesnt take her job too seriously but at the end of the day, she's still a nun and well, if Barbara has to come after her whenever she misses her duties, you cant tell me the others dont run after her to dress in a more proper uniform, which actually made me think that thy probably made the outfit as a compromise. You might say that things work different in a fantasy setting like Liyue but if you look at authority figures like Ningguang and Keqing, they look really formal, like you know you have to take them seriously. Yes, Keqing is more casual than Ningguang but then again, if I remember correctly, she poses as a worker sometimes(?). Even then, Keqing is still dressed pretty formally. Also, law school teaches lawyers how to present themselves at court and they're really strict abt presentation. Im pretty sure if a lawyer comes into court dressed like Yanfei, they'll be in huge trouble. Ei (suggested by sis) - listen, Venti and Zhongli have good reasons in their outfits cuz they're disguised as humans. Ei isnt in disguise so why is it that she looks so simple? Like, even Zhongli in his casualwear is still able to make fans think "yo, what if this is the geo archon?". Yes, the upcoming Boss Raiden is coming up and she does look like an archon but come on, man, maybe playable Ei could use a glow up too Traveller (suggested by both of us) - We just think regional costumes for traveller makes sense. Plus, we have to be in disguise for both Liyue(suspect for Rex Lapis' death) and Inazuma(vision holder + resistance member) anyway, so it makes sense plotwise.
