You may not know this, but all Gunnar lenses have a +.25 magnification. This isn't always clear to the consumer when they purchase the glasses. Don't worry, it's safe for your eyes and Gunnar is getting better and making it clear to the consumer that this is present in the lenses.

I agree with everything said here, and I have also noticed my eyes are not as dry because these glasses actually sit very close to the eyes and wrap around the face.. I can tell there is definitely more moisture maintained as the fan on my desk is not blowing into my eyes as much. They really are great! Worth the purchase.. my only complaint is that all their glasses are not that great looking... sort of look nerdy but If they could get the styling down better I would wear them out and about but unfortunately these stay on my desk at home.

@Santiak.
@Santiak. 2 жыл бұрын
Bought a pair of their glasses, but so far i haven't been able to wear them for more than 5 or 10 minutes before my eyes start to hurt - I can feel the strain immediately, especially at the outermost/top edge of the eyeball. Don't know if it's because I have above average vision (according to an eye exam, at least), but I feel like my eyes have to compensate more with them on than without. They do mention on their website now that the regular lenses have magnification. However, most 3rd party retailers don't - and arent aware! - nor do they give you the option of choosing the non-magnifying lenses Gunnar has (called "Natural focus" as opposed to the standard lenses called "GUNNAR focus"). So, yeah, the magnification might be theoretically beneficial, but that's assuming you are sitting a certain distance from your monitor and tend not to move your eyes but your head to navigate the screen. But most experienced users i know move their eyes and not their head, to avoid neck strain, and they sit at a distance that's comfortable for their natural eyesight. So in my experience, they're good if you have horrible positioning and computer use manners, but they also will reinforce some of those (like the neck strain). If you're already comfortable but just want to avoid blue light, these aren't the brand for you - especially if you plan on buying from a 3rd party, and especially if you want any other model than the Vertex and Intercept models, which are the ONLY (adult) models you can choose "Natural focus" lenses for.
@palmab
@palmab 2 жыл бұрын
I second that!
@Santiak.
@Santiak. 2 жыл бұрын
As an update; after scouring the shops that sold their glasses in my country (Denmark), I could conclude that indeed no reseller is aware that the standard lenses have magnification. So I bit the proverbial bullet and ordered a pair if Interceptors with "Natural focus" (0 magnification) directly from them - as mentioned, only Interceptor and Vertex frames has that option, and only for the 64 rated glass type. No strength is MUCH more comfortable for me, and are recommendable, but the hazzle involved in getting a pair, and the extra cost involved, still don't quite mount up to being worth it. So if you can get them without strength in your country, they might be worth it. Just be aware that any reseller is unlikely to be aware that "standard" from GUNNAR means +0.2 magnification. On an aside, I brought the previous pair to work, and not a single person among my 7 (programmer) colleagues finds them comfortable enough to do much else than try them on, and conclude that they strain their eyes almost immediately. And note that I brought them in the guise of "having an old pair lying around", planning to tell anyone who might end up using them why I didn't use them afterward, to avoid bias. And among them were both people much younger and older than me, and with and without poorer eyesight. The 0.2 magnification was either insufficient for those that needed it, or too much for those that didn't, so I can only conclude GUNNAR is severely shooting themselves in the foot with this. Maybe they were wearing GUNNAR Focus lenses when they were taking aim.. *ba-dum tish* Anyway, as mentioned, without focus, if looking only at the glasses, I can recommend the glasses themselves, but I can't bring myself to recommend them due to the process of getting ones without being so obscure and opaque for everyone involved.

Omg this was the comment I was searching. Please help me to if you see. So I got Gunnar Focus without knowing about magnification. I got it couple days ago. And as soon as I put them on, I had headache and dizziness little bit. And I could see that things look slightly bigger and closer than their reality. I definitely felt something is special in the lenses. But I didn’t like it. And I also didn’t like my eyes staring at me back. It was having reflection of my eyes and skin under eyes I could see and it was bothering me. I am thinking if I should return and get natural focus instead. I don’t have any vision problems thanks to God. I see well and my recent eye exam doctor told me to come back for dilated whole eye check up after 2 years. So I have no problem with my eyes, but I wonder if these magnification glasses will harm my eyes. Coz I felt the little headache and very light dizziness. I am thinking too much now on what to do.

Thanks for the video. The only thing I would mention is that the reviews I read and the FAQ on the gunnar website all mention that the non rx lenses are 0.2 diopter. Its also apparently in the manual though I cant confirm that since I havent bought yet. Its not on the main page but it certainly isnt a secret, it is what drew me to them in the first place in fact.

I hope they are more transparent about it. I know they don't want to put it in bold print on the front page but I think you'll agree that most people don't find that Gunnar is making it obvious enough. Just scroll through the comments of this video. Many people don't know about it. I'm not against the magnification. It's not a negative. I made this video for consumer awareness and general computer eyewear information.

Very well done video and descriptions. @Eye Influence I am thinking about buying one of these Gunnar's. My eye sight needs a magnification of about -2.75 and -3.25. These are actually messured for the distance. I read from some articles that it is better to use a magnification for a closer distance lower magnification, just to see the specific distance (in this case the monitor which is in most cases 60-65 cm far away from the eyes). So I would need a magnification of about maybe -1.75 and -2.25 (that's just a guess, i need to proof it at the eye doc). What do you think about this?

Hey Oliver! Thanks a ton for the detailed videos. I don't wear glasses yet (20/20 now, but I will need glasses soon, for sure, because I didn't know about computer glasses for decades), but these videos convinced me to pull the trigger on some Gunnar's, and I'm VERY surprised at how much they help. I do have a question for you though. My mother has a VERY weird prescription, like one eye has a custom lense which is close to 1/4" thick, and the other is relatively normal. My question is; do Gunnar, or Felix Gray make custom lenses like that? Or do they just do standard prescriptions? I'm convinced digital eye strain is the cause of her headaches, double vision, and blurry vision. Thanks a ton for your time, and the videos!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like she may have anisometropia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anisometropia) which could be the reason for the thickness difference. Gunnar and Felix Gray offer prescription options but you'll want to check with them to see if they are comfortable with your moms prescription. I hope this info helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great day.

+Eye Influence, Oliver, thank you very much for a detail and a professional review. This is by far more useful info, especially the lensometer test. A question though: How those glasses affects someone with a -0.25 or -0.5 prescription? Thx!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 6 жыл бұрын
It actually serves the same purpose even when the wearer has a slight correction. The mind may not see a magnification difference (since the +.25 of the Gunnars would get canceled out by the -.25 of the wearer) but the eyes will still benefit from the decentered Ocular Centers. The ciliary muscles will continue to feel the relief. I hope that's the info you were looking for. If you want to know anything else please let me know. Thanks and have an awesome day!
@ArkaTV
@ArkaTV 6 жыл бұрын
Oliver, thank you for the reply. Though I didn't understand about Gunnars +0.25 cancelling the -0.25. Isn't it like wearing the wrong prescription? Nearsighted wearing farsighted glasses? Or am I missing something? Or at this values it won't matter much? Won't it affect when looking away from computer monitors, for example at a tv monitor that is 4 meters away?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion, what I meant by those numbers cancelling each other out is that there would be little to no noticeable change in visual acuity. They technically don't qualify as farsighted glasses because of how low the power is. I hope that helped explain it. I'm here to answer any other questions you may have. Thanks!

I am thinking of getting a pair of Gunnars work-play transition lenses, but after watching this video, am concerned about the 50mm PD. If the glasses cause the eyes to converge, would wearing them as everyday glasses away from the computer screen for a long time likely cause some eye strain?
@EyeInfluence

For most it’s so minor that it’s not a problem. I noticed it and I wouldn’t wear them full time. If you want an alternative, look into Felix Gray. They give the option to not have the magnification. I have a video on their product. If you have any other questions just let me know. Thanks for the comment.

Gunnar is actually my middle name (and what I was called until I turned 25), so I came close to purchasing a pair when I first saw them, but now you have convinced me to actually place an order. Excellent review and video, but-as others have pointed out-your title is misleading,
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't intend for the title to be misleading or to be clickbait. So for that particular feedback from the video has been minimal. Most people find the title to be right on target with what I presented. It's not that Gunnar doesn't tell customers, they just don't make it perfectly clear how their lenses work and why some people are unable to use them. Also, that a cool middle name. My middle name is "Danger". As in Austin "Danger" Powers. j/k Thanks for watching the video Chris!

I know this is an older video but they do mention this in their FAQ, at least now they do. From the FAQ: GUNNAR lens material has specifically tuned focusing power providing you with sharper, clearer vision. This patented lens technology aids natural focusing and reduces stress and strain on your eyes. Less eye strain reduces digital fatigue and issues associated with prolonged computer use. The GUNNAR non-Rx frames have a standard +0.2 diopter that allows the eyes not to strain and stress when looking at close computer distances for extended periods of time.

Thanks for the nice video. I have a question, I had near perfect eye sight 2 yrs ago when I checked, I have used Gunnar glasses for 4 years now. I started getting migraine aura about 7 months ago, I noticed I had to shrink my eyes to view far distance. Could the +.25 magnification have caused my eyes to go bad? I will appreciate your response.
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
The power itself wouldn’t do that. It’s possible that you’ve been over working your eyes and so now your having trouble focusing in the distance because of that. Or, your vision is just changing with age. If you’re now around the age of 40, presbyopia May be starting and the .25 on the Gunnar’s May just not be enough to satisfy your eyes anymore. I hope this helps. :)

I spend more time on my computer, and my gaming monitor, than I should. For 3-4 days per week its usually 15+ hours (daily total, about 12 hours in 1 sitting on average), and for the other few days I usually spend about 9-10 hours on the computer, or my laptop. For years now I have headaches, eye strain, my eyes always feel sleepy, and its become harder to see things that are further away (Its been like this for a while, but I still cant read street signs from distances that others can, and things like that), so i was wondering if these had any long-term negative effect, or if they would help overall long term. Thanks! And your video quality is fantastic, you've got yourself a subscriber.
@EyeInfluence

There are definite long term effects. Your muscles strain more when focusing at close to medium range. Those muscles get fatigued and with time they won’t recover as quickly. Maybe you’re already feeling that. Try to take breaks. Relax your eyes by closing them for a few minutes during those long stretches of gaming. That’s gonna be the best solution long term. The glasses will help but not fix the problem. Hope this helps. Thanks for the sub.

I got a copy of the one your holding right now, but I wouldn't say it helped my eye strain. I bought them because I've spent many months lately doing exams and gaming from noon till dawn. Maybe it prevents some damage on my eyes, but I personally feel like the pain comes considerably faster when having the glasses on. I regularly take breaks from the glasses because it feels better without. Not sure If I want to continue wearing them at all

Great video! I was diagnosed with dry eyes recently and I game a lot. Would these glasses ease dry eyes or is it mostly for eye strain?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
Glasses can definitely help with dry eyes by reducing the amount of air that comes in contact with the surface of your eyes. I'm not sure if your doctor suggested artificial tears but that can help. Another not so well known thing is taking Omega-3 supplements. A recent study shows that Omega-3 fatty acids lower the evaporation rate of the film that coats the surface of the eyes. Combine that with just about computer glasses and I think you'll find some relief. Here's an article I wrote on this: www.eyeinfluence.org/single-post/foods-for-healthy-eyes Hope it helps. All the best.

If you need prescription then that's always going to be your best choice. If you don't need prescription then nonprescription options like those made by Gunnar and others are just fine. @EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
I actually made a video covering that exact question. But to answer your question, no, your eyes won't get worse but you may become dependant on wearing computer glasses because your eyes will notice the difference. Think of it like coffee. People have become dependant on the cafeen and they can't go through the day without it. Computer glasses are much the same. They help but they don't really make things worse. Our vision is good or bad because it's genetic, not because we spend hours on the computer. To go really deep and evolutionary, if we continue down this path for generations, then our eyes will evolve to become more nearsighted and thus future generations may become increasingly dependant on glasses even if their great grand parents didn't. Hope this helps. Sorry for the long response.

Our vision, much like our hair, is genetic. So if you're meant to wear glasses (genetically speaking) then you'll need them eventually either way. You may find that your eyes become slightly dependant on the computer glasses but you have to weigh out the alternative. Yes, you'll become slightly dependant but the alternative is the headaches, blurry vision and tired eyes that come with computer eye fatigue. Hope that helps. Have an awesome day!

Hi, I am considering buying a pair of these glasses for work as I basically sit in front of a computer screen all day. I loved your explanation on how these glasses work, but is there anything special about the tint that they use?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 6 жыл бұрын
squidmak The color isn’t unique to them if that’s what you mean. Most optical shops can make lenses that color. If you mean “is the tint really part of the reason why it works for computer work and gaming “ then the answer is yes. The color helps with contrast. The anti glare helps make things sharper. The combination of that with prescription = Gunnar’s success. You need all of it. So yes the tint is important. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

Hi Mike, Sorry for the super late reply. I've really been encouraging something that I call "Light Management". By this I mean control your light exposure throughout the day and you may be able to stop digital eye strain and other computer related issues. Because you spend so much time in front of a computer screen I would really encourage you to implement breaks every 20-30 minutes. Just 20 seconds long, looking away from the screen, will really help reduce eye muscle fatigue. I know that it's tough to remember but I would start with this before wearing glasses to filter blue light. Glasses should be worn during the second half of your workday to help prevent sleep disruption. Computer glasses can help but it sounds like you have perfect vision. Start with taking regular breaks and I think you'll see a big improvement.
