Not all "computer glasses" are created equal. In this video I'll show you the difference between glasses that just filter out Blue Light and those that help with Digital Eye Strain. I use Gunnar Optiks and Felix Gray as examples.

I'm just now finding your videos but have had eye strain problems for awhile due to looking at screens multiple hours a day, but couldn't find a reputable source to clearly explain all things blue light glasses! I've ordered 4 or 5 pairs over the past few years from amazon that were all under $20, but have never known if they're working (well) or not and it's been driving me crazy! Thank you for these videos. I recently enrolled back into school full time and my first semester back my eyes hurt so bad. @Eye Influence, I basically have 20/20 vision and was thinking of getting the $40 Prospek computer glasses you have in your link, but they have magnifications from 0 to +3, how do I know which to get? I know you explained magnification in your video, but I was either too tired or too stupid to follow along. Not sure if I have eye strain per say, but I get migraines and nausea which could be due to something else, but seems worse when I'm staring at my work screen (could also just be the job in general making me sick, I hate it, dear God help me, but I digress). Do I need no magnification or should I just try a mid-range +1.5 magnification?

Thank you for an amazing video! I was wondering, given that computer glasses feature some slight magnification and slightly decentered pupillary distance, should I have such made at the optician? Or could I simply order online? (I do not normally wear glasses.) Thanks once again!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
I'm always going to support going to see an experienced optician. They will be able to measure your Pupillary distance and decenter the PD accordingly. Think about going to an optician like getting a shirt tailored. For most, off the rack is just fine, but others like to get things fitted for their specific measurements. Hope this helps. Thanks for the support!

Hi! Thanks for video. I use my laptop for work. I was thinking about getting a 27in monitor to work on. Specfically the BenQ which are supposed to have low blue light. After watching your video I'm not sure if I should just get computer glasses for eye strain or if I should do both, get glasses and a monitor. Any thoughts? Thanks!
@EyeInfluence

If a monitor filters blue light then the result will be a less than accurate color balance. I would stick to a standard quality monitor of your choice and install a filter like f.lux

It’s probably some companies way of making their lenses seem more “fancy” but in the end there is no difference. They’re are no consumer level radiation glasses. I’d stick to the blue light blockers Georgina.

Very informative video, but my if I were to purchase computer eye glasses do have to get an eye examination or just purchase them online and would eye glasses maintain or improve my vision?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
If you haven't had an eye exam in a while then I would suggest starting with that. If you have 20/20 vision then you can order them online without any power from the company of your choice. The glasses will not help to maintain your vision, it can only help to reduce sleep interruption, glare and some other symptoms of digital eye strain.

What glasses would you recommend for computer and iphone? I have no idea which one to get for using both iphone and laptop. Help please! My eyes are feeling dry and the vision is blurry and when I look at words which are not even that far away - it all looks blurry to me now. I totally feel like looking at phone screen and probably laptop screen too is making my vision even worse. I used to have great vision but I can feel the damage happening every second I look at my screens.. feel so dry and sometimes like they are on fire. Which one!?!?! help!!!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
First, you should get an eye exam and ask an eye doctor about the possible need for glasses. If you're doc says you're 20/20 then they are likely to suggest starting with regular breaks (every 15-20 minutes). The truth is blue light glasses won't really do much do stop dry eyes. Computer glasses can help with eye fatigue so that may be a good way for you to go. If so, Felix Gray and Gunnar offer lenses with low powers.

Really good job explaining the difference and importance of them!! Thanks a lot! I am software engineer and my job requires a lot of staying in front of laptop and also at home, I do lot of studying which also makes me spend a lot of time in front of digital devices. however, I don't have any "digital eye strain" issue. But I am worried if I shall wear Blue light glasses to be proactively cautious about this. Also, I had a lasik surgery. In that case, would you still recommend wearing non-prescription blue light glasses in the spirit of being cautious about eye ?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
It's always a good idea to get ahead of the problem but you don't need it for eye protection, but rather, for reduced glare and to help transition into a proper sleep routine after late hours on a digital device. Take regular breaks and you should be able to keep digital eye strain away. have a great day!

Hello, even though I've been in glasses most my life I've always only had one pair. So my question is, do you recommend buying different glasses for different uses? I do a lot of gaming but also web surfing via computer(hooked up to a giant tv)/phone. Since my current glasses are scuffed up, I reckon its time to buy a new pair but I wasn't sure where to buy them from and if I should buy normal ones for when I go out, gaming ones for when I game and blue light filter ones for evenings like some of your replies in past comments. I really am just this ignorant about this stuff, thank you in advance!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. It's actually quite common for people to ask if they should have multiple pairs and I often answer yes... but only if you can afford it. Computer glasses can be made with blue light blocking coatings that I personally don't like to walk outside or drive with because they actually cause more reflections than a typical AR coating. So if you can, go for separate glasses. If you can only have one pair, try to get lenses that filter blue light, like the BlueTec lenses, and have a standard AR placed on top of that. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the videos!

have question about Blue light glasses. I knew about 20/20/20 rule and I follow it. as I have dry eye syndrome (but I have perfect vision) and I have some information about it. as you know who have dry eye syndrome eyes are getting tired more often than those who have normal eyes. I also use Artificial tears such as avizor lacrifresh(I don't know if you familiar of this brand , it's doesn't matter as they have same purpose). I am learning web development so I spend lot of time in front of PC, but I always take little brakes. So my question is Does Computer Glasses will make little difference (and little difference will be a "Good Thing") to me and help me with pain which cause dry eye syndrome ?

Do you have an opinion of the blue light glasses from mvmt since I want those since I’m always on my phone and my games all day and wonder if from there if they would be good Also would it be bad to wear them for style throughout the day as well as blue light
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
The frames look great but their website has zero info on how much blue light their lenses actually filter. You can certainly wear blue light filtering glasses all day but switch to sunglasses when you go outside. During the day, if you can, try to get some natural and unfiltered sunlight through your eyes. It will be good for your health and we can all use a little more sun in our lives. (just don't look at the sun. That would be bad)

So if Im correct prescription computer glasses should be better option than ready universal computer glasses like Gunnars right? Because for the all measurments that should be taken personally? I got something around +0.50. As far as I know if I am starting to wear some glasses with magnification my eyes will become lazy and I will need to continuosly ingrease the magnification? Thats why Im scared to buy a computer glasses with magnification.
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
It's a common misconception that our eyes will get worse once we start wearing our doctor prescribed power. Our vision is much like our hairline and height; it's based on genetics. At +.50, yes, you'll see an improvement and become somewhat dependent on the glasses to help relax your eyes throughout the day. But think about the alternative. If you don't wear the glasses then your eyes are going to strain and suffer more than they need too. Your power is pretty low so you can do most things without wearing the glasses but I would suggest wearing them when your going to spend extended periods of time looking at things up close. I hope this helps. Remember, your eyes are not going to get worse by wearing glasses. That's a myth.

Thanks! Good info here. I used only anti/reflective coating glasses until now (Zeiss Duravision Blue and Rhein 12% brown tinted lens - I do not recall the name) to protect from blue light from screens. I did not find Gunnar or something similar in my country at a decent price so I have to continue with reflective coating lens. I have searched the web for more info and I found that in some tests Nikon did better than Essilor in blocking blue light. I believe that in my country Essilor has an aggressive marketing as the optometrists recommend Essilor probably for the bigger slice of the price they get so I tend not to believe them. Could you please help with an opinion? What would you recommend out of these: Hoya BlueControl, Zeiss Duravision Blue, Nikon SeeCoat Blue, Essilor Crizal Prevencia, Rhein UVALLBLUE or Rodenstock?Thanks!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
I've personally tried Crizal Prevencia, TechShield Blue (VSP coatings) and the many products I've reviewed. I'll be quite honest, most of the coating level filters are not that great. I'm not a fan of having that much color on my lenses. I prefer to filter the light on the lens level and have a colorless AR instead. You should look into BluTech lenses. They are the same type of lenses found in Felix Gray glasses. They filter blue light on the lens level instead of just bouncing it off with a coating. I think this type of lens in the future of filtering harmful blue light. Check them out blutechlenses.com/ Hope this helps.

If you suffer from eye strain and fatigue then computer glasses are the better way to go. I would also suggest taking breaks every 20-30 minutes to at least let your eyes refresh a bit. The lenses are $140 so idk if its gonna be the same as gunnar or worse. I'm just having trouble deciding what I should get to reduce my digital eye strain alongside having the right prescription. So far the filter in the gunnars make it easier on my eyes but I find I feel really weird due to the magnification.

I need to get reading glasses with slight magnification. I'm getting mine through Firmoo which seems to have good reviews. I'm debating on adding their anti-bluelight lense to my prescription. I want glasses I can use for reading, drawing, and computer use. I have a lot of eye strain and difficulty focusing on nearby objects for long periods of time. My eyes literally start spazzing out which gives me headaches. So I guess two questions here: 1. Can I use my reading/drawing glasses for computer use too or should I invest in a separate pair for that with a different magnification? 2. If I can use my reading glasses, would it be worth it to add the anti-bluelight filter or will I be fine with just the prescription alone? (I work with computers)

Great question Brit. Personally I wouldn’t get a blue light blocking coating for my full-time, all day glasses. The pinkish color that is has is just a bit distraction to me. I’d start with the regular anti glare using your doctors Rx. If you’re noticing extreme symptoms of eye strain I would really encourage resting your eyes more during the day. Short breaks every 20-30min make a huge difference. Hope the glasses help.

Good explanation. I stumbled upon this while looking for some anti blue light glasses for my girlfriend who works in front of a computer all day. I'm now aware of what computer or reading glasses are and the combination of the two. I have a question though... If she already wears glasses already (she's officially short sited in one eye but wears the glasses both driving, reading and when in front of a computer and doesn't wear contacts)... Does this mean she wouldn't need computer glasses and only require blue blocking glasses to fit over top of her existing prescription glasses?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
Since she already wears prescription glasses she may want to ask her doctor to write a prescription for the specific focal length of her computer screen. If she ends up getting a set of glasses designated just for this use then she can get anti-blue light coatings on that set. I wouldn't suggest a set of fit over glasses simply due to the extra weight and the "look" it gives. It's better to just have a set of glasses made for that purpose. The computer glasses can also be made using her near PD. This will help to reduce eye fatigue. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the videos.

I'm on my laptop since i wake up till i go to sleep That's 15 hours to 18h I've had lasik surgery done in 4 months I use F.lux, a program to make the laptop yellow tinted and also activate the iphone night mode almost all day Is it enough? My eyes are very dry and i feel them "tight", i dont know how to explain what glasses would you suggest? and does buying cheap glasses help at all or is it just wasting money and F.lux is enough? As of now i cant spend more than 20 or 25 bucks :/ it needs to be online since my country doesnt have options thank you!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
I would say using f.lux and night mode should be just fine but the dry eyes and "tight" feeling are just a result of not taking enough breaks. I understand that you are on the computer all day but you must rest your eyes. We blink less when we stare at a computer screen and that means your eyes are not getting wiped and refreshed by you eye lid as much as they should be. Glasses can help keep your eyes less dry if you sit by a vent or fan but that's about it for right now. I would start with the breaks every 15-20 minutes and if that doesn't help as much then you should get a set of glasses like Gunnar or Felix Gray which have a slight magnification to reduce eye strain. I hope this help. Don't forget to take breaks. Thanks for watching my videos!

question: Does the screen look any different when using blue cut specs in front of a computer or a phone? As compared to naked eyes?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 4 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the type of glasses and the amount of blue light being filtered. Sleep glasses, like those made by Felix Gray, will have a noticeable tint on the lens and you'll see your color affected by it. Their standard lenses will not distort color. Gunnar also makes different blue light filtering lenses and some will change the way colors look while others (like the crystalline lens) will show no signs of blue light filtration. That's because they filter a lower part of the spectrum and also filter a lower percent of it. I hope this helps. Thanks for leaving a comment here.

Would it be possible to damage the magnification on the lenses if you cleaned them wrong? Would mlg phantom gunnar non prescription glasses have the same effect as prescription ones?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
The power can not be removed since the magnification is placed within the lens and not a coating. As for the non-prescription glasses, it wouldn't have the same effect because there is no power in the lens which would allow for the decentration. Not sure if you've seen my video on Gunnar but in that video I talk about how all Gunnar glasses have some magnification. This is done to help keep the wearers eyes focused. Eye Influence would i be better off going for the gaming eyewear when working at computer and games or go for the computer eyewear? I have dry, tired and strained eyes which go puffy in the morning. Also would they reduce my puffiness in the morning?
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'm not a fan of the amber tint that Gunnar is known for but it's a popular lens among FPS gamers. I would start with a clear lens like the Crystaline lenses from Gunnar. The puffiness is most likely a byproduct of overstraining your eyes late into the night. I would suggest taking breaks every 20 minutes or so to refresh the eyes. You can also try artificial tears. That can help keep them moist. Here's a link to our Relief Tips video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4awo5yqe9CGetU Hope this help. Have an awesome day.

Hello, I went to the optometrist recently and I (again) seem to have retained my 20/20. Although I still have perfect vision, I feel my vision, sleep, and day to day life is lackluster. I’m starting to suspect it’s my increase in screen time due to being in the studio a lot. If You were to recommend computer glasses with the blue filtering, which brand or what glasses would you recommend specifically? Thanks :-)
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
By studio do you mean music studio? The reason I ask is because many music studios tend to be poorly lit with little natural air flow (to reduce noise). In any case, I like Felix Gray and Pixel because their lenses are virtually colorless and they filter at least 50% of blue light. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

If they have never heard of it, don't get your glasses there. Here are some things to ask for: Shamir Blue Zero Lenses Zeiss Blue Protect Lenses Those lenses are the best choice for prescription blue light filtering. If you need extra blue light filtering you can go for an addition coating like Crizal Prevencia. Thanks for reaching out. I hope this helps.

Hey Eye Influence, I have a question. But let me tell a little story. I have been experiencing eye fatigue and eye strain for some time now. I thought it may be just that I have dry eyes, so I bought some eye drops to heal my eyes for a while. Well it worked for a while, but then I experienced those symptoms again. It even lead to some extreme eye strain that I could feel the "nerves" being quite in pain (I played video games longer than usual). So I took some break from any digital screens for a week and the nerves were rested and healed. Right now, when I look at digital screens, I just have the feeling of dried eyes (even though I drink a lot) and eye strain. I myself wear prescribed glasses for everyday use with 0.75 power on the left and 1 power on the right. I don't use them, when I'm looking up close at digital screens. Lately I have discovered your channel and something about Gunnar glasses. So my question is, if I buy pair of Gunnar glasses, do you think they will effectively reduce the symptoms? And as I said, that I don't wear glasses, when looking up close at any screen, do I need prescribed power as my normal glasses, or is the 0.25 power enough just for close distance? Thank you for taking your time.
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
They can definatly help but it sounds like the main issue is over straining your eyes. Before investing in glasses I would suggest implementing breaks more often. Every 15-20 minutes you should look away from your screen and rest them by taking long blinks and looking at something more than 20 feet away. This will "restart" and refresh your eyes. After that you should look into Gunnar or Felix Gray glasses. They each have magnification but Felix Gray gives you the choice. I like to suggest Felix Gray because you can always switch the magnification version out for the non-magnified version. In regards to your dry eyes, you should look into taking supplements with Omega-3 Fish oil. It's been proven to reduce the evaporation rate from the moisture on your cornea. Here's a link to an article I wrote on this topic. www.eyeinfluence.org/single-post/foods-for-healthy-eyes I hope this helps.

Alexander Miller III I don't really know in your case, but could this be your brain playing a trick on you. Flux tends to make your screen look warmer in tone so maybe your brain is tricking your body into thinking it should be at a higher body temperature causing you to feel cold.

It's really hard to say what caused the discomfort because progressives require an exact measurement. When you do it on your own it could lead to misalignment. If you're looking into progressives again you may want to have them made at your local optician.

I would start with an eye exam. If it turns out that you do not need correction, I would have to say the blurry vision and headaches is the result of extreme digital eye strain. You should take breaks every 15-20 minutes and look away from your device during this time. Take long blinks and let your eyes rest for at least 20 seconds. Again, with the way you describe the symptoms, I would start with an eye exam and go from there. Thanks for supporting the channel. Hope it all works out.

Love the professionalism in your videos, both interesting and informative. I do have a few questions though. To preface I am near sighted and as such wear a prescription. I am also a video and photo editor so not only is true color is important but I also spend 6+ hours in front of a computer screen just for my job so I do get a bit of eye strain (I also game another 6+ at home each day but that's on a tv about 6 to 7 feet away). Today I went to get a up to date prescription so that I could order a pair gunnar crystalline glasses but was informed at my local optometrist that I could have a blue filter put on my standard glasses. So I feel like my questions are going to be all over but: would the blue filter on the lenses effect the true color I'd need for my job? Should I specify that I need my prescription to be more for computer glasses? If I did specify (last question) would you still recommend the gunnar crystalline over the prescription lenses I'd get from my optometrist? Lastly if I did get the gunnar crystalline would it be safe to use them as my standard glasses ie driving, being outside, etc?

Maybe I missed it if someone already asked but what about if you wear contacts. I have prescription contacts that I wear to work (on computer all day) at night i take them out and wear glasses. My eyes feel tired dry and red most of the time. I also have sleeping issues so think blocking out blue light would benefit. Can I wear computer glasses or blue light glasses in addition to contacts? Would you suggest different for day versus night? Thanks in advance!
@EyeInfluence
@EyeInfluence 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. I think you have a few different issue that need to be addressed. First, your eyes may be feeling dry and tired at the end of the day because we blink less when staring at digital devices. This means your contacts will dry out quickly and that will lead to eye irritation. Combine that with eye strain from looking at computer screens and you'll find the problem. Wearing computer glasses can help in a few ways. 1) reduce the amount of air making contact with your eyes. This will lower the moisture evaporation rate 2) reduce light intensity from your device. 3) filter blue light at night to help you transition into "rest mode" Lastly, there is no problem with wearing computer glasses over contacts. They can still help. I hope I answered all your questions. Thanks for watching the video. Have an awesome day.

Felix Gray is another nice option. They also offer a +.25 lens with a virtually clear lens. I hope this helps.
