to kick off this season Open Mike Eagle and El-P dig into El's early life leading up to his first recordings and the forming of the seminal underground rap group Company Flow. Along the way we hear the story of his first encounter with the music business and how that informed the ’independent as f*ck’ aesthetic of his early releases. We then explore the record label bidding war that lands the group at legendary underground label Rawkus Records.

The part where they basically hacked tower records to send out their records to tope djs around the country was beautiful. So dope how co flow blew up and el-p’s whole progression as a musician. So dope

I’ve listened to many EL-P interviews in the past and this is by far my favorite. Being the biggest EL-P Stan ever I knew a lot about his back story, however I never knew about how they came up with the name Funcrusher Plus for the album. That is dope, great question Open Mike.

Same here. I've listened to the first 2 eps and I hear there are 12 total. It's already gone way more in depth than anything, and I've read and listened to just about any interviews available from the Rawkus days through RTJ4. I thought I knew just about everything but I've learned quite a few new details already.

Possibly unpopular opinion: Cold Vein is El-P's masterpiece. This is dope though, pause tapes and casio sk-1 forever.

C4C and R.A.P. music are equally brilliant but on a different plateau technology wise. C4C especially sounds waaaaaay futuristic even for 2012.

I love Run The Jewels, but I’ve been dying for an El-P solo project for years. I miss the dark and experimental music he provided on the last 2 albums, which he rarely touches on RTJ.
@interstellaroverdriven6450

Agreed. There was a dark touch to the 1st 2 RTJ albums - tracks like Angel Dust but not like the 2012 epic duo of C4C and R.A.P. Music which are INCREDIBLE albums and are among the last recordings on Def Jux. I have had a hard time adjusting to the RTJ 3 & 4 - good but not the same magic. Would LOVE a new El-P solo album having him break down the madness around us in 2023!

el-p is easily one of the most unique and talented figures in hip hop as a rapper and emcee, but the story of how he and jus had the idea to use the tower records dj connections to release the first company flow ep is genius. this was pre-internet, at a time when labels still ruled the land, and these young dudes figured out how to release their music independently to a huge audience. that's insane

Its sad and headz i ran with in the south really think HiPHop in NYC still exists the way it was. When i explain theres no mics and underground shows in the same way it really breaks their heart. It broke mine when i came back. HIPHOP NYC is either someone's bedroom or a niche limited scene that you really need to be in the very limited loop of headz.

Mike I'm not the most computer savvy guy so I wouldn't know how to reach his socials but how can I get my demo into El P's hands, I'm currently working on an album and I'm completely inspired by El P. I produce my own music on Fruity Loops and its kind of like Chemical Brothers and hip hop but I would love to see what El P thinks and its amazing people even get the interview with this guy he's such a successful true artist. I've talked to Mr. Len on myspace before and he was super cool but I wouldn't know how to get it to El p just to hear it.
