He didn’t leave Journey at this time he just went off and did a solo album. He leave Journey a few years later over health problems. They wanted to tour for the new album and he was unable at the time. So that ended in time with Journey.

It's kind of a sad story. Perry suffered a bad hip injury while hiking in Hawaii. He didn't want to rush into surgery, but with a big tour coming up, his bandmates asked him to have the surgery. Perry refused, and this led to him leaving the band permanently. OF NOTE - this happened in the late 90s, WELL after the release of this song in 1984. To be clear, Steve was still in the band at the time of this song and video's release. It was just a side project he did between Journey albums, and it spawned three other hits, "She's Mine", "Strung Out", and "Foolish Heart". "Foolish Heart" is probably the one that got the most airplay besides this one.

That was the 2nd time he left. The first time, he was burnt out, his mother had recently died, and he was having creative differences. When the hip issue came up and he wouldn't go on tour that 2nd time, the band saw it as a power play so rather than have him go on hiatus, they officially replaced him.

For me, he's number one for sure. You could certainly attribute this to nostalgia because it's been my favourite band since I was 12-13 years old, but hey, to each their own! I can definitely appreciate other male vocalists that are perhaps more technical, heck even... "better", but Steve Perry with Journey was a force beyond comprehension in how their songs felt so nostalgic even if it was your first hearing.

@@kristinabushnell3652 Arnel sounds like Bryan Adams not Steve Perry. He was hired because he covered a number of 80s rockers. Schon called him a “chameleon”. Their voices aren’t “similar”, he has half Perry’s vocal range and can’t sing the whole Journey catalog, that’s why the band hired 2 extra backup lead singers to fill the gap. @Scott Hill English Perry doesn’t “praise” Pineda, he’s nice to all singers. Perry wanted the band to go with Jeff Scott Soto so that they could go in a new direction.

At this point, Steve hadn't left Journey. This was just a hiatus from Journey for a solo album in 1984. He rejoined them for a couple of more Journey albums in 1986 and 1996. He recorded more solo albums in 1994 and 2018, plus a Christmas album in 2021. Basically Steve was in Journey from 1977-87 and 1995-98.

Journey was a band that had a singer b4 Steve but it was Steve's voice ND him that made journey global, but there was friction w/him and his band after several years but the Hawaii injury is really what did it in foe them all..

Steve Perry never felt like he was a part of the journey. He felt like an outcast and they all argue all the time about what songs are we’re going to sing and everything else he just felt like an outcast but he was the lead singer.

There is still plenty of Journey with Steve you haven't heard yet, 9 albums worth, you have just scratched the surface. Nice reaction keep diving into Journey and when you can live is best especially the Escape tour in 1981 in Houston. Love you Guys 👍

A local radio station here in Philadelphia, a few weeks ago, played this song with only his vocals. They isolated his vocals and dropped the music. I've heard this song a million times, but never isolated. AMAZING!!!

In 1982, Journey guitarist, Neal Schon, was making projects outside of the band, which prompted Steve to make a solo album in 1984 (Street Talk). Returned to Journey at the end of the year, and they worked on their next album, Raised On Radio. In 1987, he was burnt out after nearly 10 years of recording and touring along with his mother dying, so he quit the band in mid-tour. He came back in late 1995, after touring for his second solo album (For the Love of Strange Medicine (1994)). His last album with Journey was released in October 1996 (Trial by Fire), and he injured his hip while hiking in Hawaii shortly after. He held off on surgery, which prompted the band to fire him 1998, after Trial by Fire fell off the charts. He holds a grudge against the members of the band, whom he felt were sticking their noses in his business with the surgery and then firing him, and he's been a solo artist ever since.

Awwww - I'm so glad you guys finally did this song - but a little sad that you didn't react to the video. There is actually a really funny one to go with it. Please please do Foolish Heart next. It's just vocal perfection. And I would still love a reaction to Journey's Don't Stop Believing.

Steve Perry left due to creative differences, but came back in 1986 with Raised on Radio with Neil Schoen and the keyboard player and it was a huge hit album with lead single, The Girl Can't Help it ,a song you should definitely react to.

The biggest issue was his crippling hip injury, which he didn’t want to surgically fix until after their tour. They said NO. Leading them to creative differences.

Actually "When you love a woman" was NOT Originally from the Greatest Hits Album....It was from 1996 Album "Trial By Fire" after that, Perry left the band because of a Hip injury.....RIGHT before the tour was supposed to start.....That's when they fractured....

There's a "behind the music" documentary on vh1 that will answer your questions. If you watch the original video of this song, you'll see his real girlfriend he was singing to. Sherry was so pretty. She's also party of the documentary. Highly recommend it! From the documentary, you'll see why the Journey song "Only the Young" is my favorite song by them.
