@@tinkletimegaming8488 scavengers/birds usually go for soft, “easy to pick” parts likes eyes, cheeks, lips, tongue etc. They need a larger animal to open up the carcass first to get to the innards, small scavengers don’t have the strength and time to get to all of a frozen body. I seem to recall that one of the hikers broke through a snow bank and landed face first in a small ravine, which turned into a small stream of melt water later, essentially thawing and “eroding” the face only, while the rest of the body remained frozen. If you look at the autopsy pictures it should show one of the bodies missing most of the face due to that.

I'm surprised how little this is getting questioned. An avalanche was one of the first theories but was easily disputed since the terrain was too flat for one and the tent was barely covered in snow. The injuries would make sense if there indeed was such a "snow wall" directly behind the tent but according to the photos there was no sign of such whatsoever. And how were there visible footprints weeks after or did the avalanche magically stop as soon as it struck the tent? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah plus if these ice slabs crushed a lot of them and injured them thier would be blood all over the tent. Also the cuts into the tent are high up if they were being smashed they would of crawled out. Something doesnt add up. The injuries could easily have occured after leaving the tent. The "crushing" injuries occured to the 4 hikers who were found months later under hundreds of pounds of snow that had collapsed on top of them. Yes that was a good scientific conclusion and explained the injuries on some bodies. Adding that they set up the tent in that unstable place due to the fog that took away the visibility and left them without seeing anything and night was coming; the photo of the tent assembly shows this. The two who died near the fire were the first to die and not the last because their bodies were lined up and their clothes were being worn by others. The scratches they had were because they climbed the tree. And finally, one of the members worked in the university's nuclear laboratory where he presented traces of radiation

@@DanSk451 "Cut their way out of the tent and run? No way. " What's the alternative? Stay in their crushed tent, smothered by snow and ice in the high wind with no source of warmth? The tent would normally insulate them but, being crushed, it would immediate fail to serve that function; their wind wall that they had created by digging the hole would normally deflect the wind, but unfortunately that wind wall was the thing that collapsed and crushed them, so it too no longer served to protect them from the wind. They were completely exposed to the elements with several of their crew severely injured and needing shelter. What's your alternative plan? Remember, they had no idea what had just happened scientifically -- we only just figured it out 60 years later -- for all they knew, they might be sitting on top of the next piece of the avalanche to fall. They might die in seconds or minutes if they stayed there. They had no way of knowing what the best course of action would be, especially since it was the middle of the night. Stay in a potential death trap while listening to your friends crying in agony? No way. Running for actual safety doesn't seem unreasonable, given the limited knowledge of the true situation they would have had. "Dead silence ..." Howling winds! Snow blasting your face and all around you! You were just awakened by a tremendous crash of ice and snow on top of you! Not 'dead silence'. "... run to the tree line without anything?" 4 of the members were dressed, some weren't. That shows that it wasn't so easy for them to recover equipment, if only 4 managed to do so. That, plus they didn't know if staying put was safe or not. Where there's one avalanche, another may follow.

Its weird that after the avalanche and they dung themselves out, they would walk away from the equipment. Several people are seriously hurt and most have no proper clothing. Its dark, windy and the snow is deep so its not like they ran. They knew that leaving clothing behind is a death sentence. You would think there would be a moment when they all got out and took a few minutes to determine what to do. What was the motivation for leaving the tent without clothes?...another avalanche?. Leaving your clothes behind is 100 percent death sentence in those conditions . How many people have been in an avalanche and then another one comes soon after?....its possible but rare. I could see them moving away a bit and let things settle and then go get the equipment. Not going over a 1.5km away in the dark, cold, naked night. The logic of this baffles me more than any other story. You would think one or two of them would stay and collect gear while others moved away. Avalanche seems likely but what they did after does not.

That's anomaly hunting. They saw four of their friends die crushed by an avalanche. Got out in the dark scared without knowing how big the avalanche was, some even got burned by the stove, so they ran for their lives in an adrenaline rush in different groups. When they realized the avalanche wasn't that big some tried to hurriedly go back to get their clothes and equipment. Some died moving back to the tent frozen in place. Some didn't knew were they were or were in shock, so they tried to group and light a fire so they could wait for light to get their equipment but failed and got frozen themselves. Easy explanations for everything. People do not act perfectly logically or rational all the time, specially in high stress situations, and that even cost them their lives.

Anton, could you please explain some of the very strange injuries that some of the people had. How could they have suffered severe skeletal damage without any outer signs of injury? How could one of the people have had his tongue missing/ cut off? How come 2 people's eyes were missing? One person's skull was severely crushed on one side, again no outer damage? I find these injuries very puzzling and cannot accept that an avalanche could have caused them! You did not mention the types of injuries or go into too much detail about them, so I am a bit confused. Thank you very much.
@jameschristensen1055
@jameschristensen1055 Жыл бұрын
The various injuries were perfectly consistent with the effects of a slab avalanche. Avalanches generate tremendous forces, such that victims can be twisted like a dishrag. The missing soft tissue - admittedly horrifically - can be explained by the scavenging activities of wildlife. Ravens are notorious for plucking out the eyes of deceased mammals, whether human or other species. The more bodies are concentrated in a given area, the greater the likelihood that they will quickly be discovered by Ravens.

The hikers also used a portable stove in the tent for heat. Some have speculated this was the source for the burns on their bodies. It would make sense that if the tent were crushed, the stove would be tossed and cause burns as the hikers tried to escape. I think it was Nexpo here on youtube that did a good analysis of the incident. After escaping the tent the hikers may have been separated, some went to the trees for shelter and others went to some hills, where both groups perished to the cold.

@@Se7nDust I don't think they needed to be in a panic to leave the place in such a hurry, after all if an avalanche that caused serious injuries to 3 of their members just happened it isn't a bad idea to get out of there as soon as possible. They can't tell at that moment if they had misjudged the nature of the local terrain and its conditions (avalanches do occur despite seeming unlikely when they camped) or if this is a freak accident, and to what degree they were responsible for it (the Swiss team considered it so, that without the little digging they did it would've never happened). It is also possible that the 2 "naked" hikers (they had their underwear on) left with their clothes on but were stripped out of them when they died and the other 4 survivors made haste down to the ravine seeing how the weather deteriorated. The placing of the bodies, parallel to each other, in a similar posture, suggests that their companions didn't want them to be found in the same tragic position of their deaths, the leg of one of them a little out of place from taking the boot off at the last moment and obviously not having time to put the sock on again.

@@Ometecuhtli In a follow up post i mentioned the main theory of the "dead mountain" book as wind reverbations from the crest causing breathing panic. This is the most probably theory I have come across. It does explain pretty much everything. For a while I seriously doubted the avalanche theory because the footprints of the hikers were fond going down the mountain. If there was an avalanche, the footprints surely would have been covered! However, now that I understand what a slab avalanche is, it makes a lot of sense. This would perfectly explain why they left the tent in such a rush but walked away slowly, why they were so poorly dressed, and why they died with such bizarre injuries. It would also explain why the tent was found covered in snow. I'm never one to subscribe to conspiracy theories, but this case was so strange I actually found the weapons testing theory to be compelling. But now that I know about the science behind the slab avalanche, I am satisfied to lay this case to rest. Thank you for putting forth such a clear explanation of the paper!!!

I find it really wonderful how science can explain the old mysteries. Can the simulation of the slab avalanche also explain why the 4 members of the expedition, who were stricken hardest by the slabs (smashed skull, one- or two-sided chest collaps, heart chambers inner bleeding) were also precisely the ones who were best clothed, walked furthest, and died last? Also, can any avalanche theory, slabs or not, explain the horizontal cutsthrough the tent? Slits on eye level, they make sense only when the tent was standing upright and not being smashed by snow/ice. And why the vertical cuts were, well, all vertical? It also makes sense when the tent was standing upright? BTW, nobody ws sleeping on his/her skies. The skies were found intact, sticked vertically, in front of the tent. Pretty selective slabs. Sorry Sir, this mystery has yet to be solved.

When I was a kid in a nordic country and skiing in spring I often saw similar incidences on a microscopic level: The sun had melted the top level of snow which then froze and might be covered by fresh, soft snow. These ice slabs would then break and fall down slopes. I don't remember wind was involved, but it is likely as all I remember is watching the snow falling down at spots bare or mostly bare from vegetation, such as frozen lake banks. Such places would most likely have at least some gusts of wind even on a calm day. We called them " mini avalanches" and I sometimes wondered how would I cope if they were big ones like in the mountains? I never thought of a scenario where it would happen in the middle of the night while sleeping in a tent!

One would be insane to sleep naked in a tent 🙄🤷🏻‍♂️
@whozk
@whozk 3 жыл бұрын
@@doggSMK Sleeping naked is actually the warmest way to sleep, especially in the cold. You sweat while you sleep and that sweat soaks any clothes against your skin, decreasing their thermal resistivity. When you sleep naked in a sleeping bag there is quite a bit of air that your body heats up while being insulated by the sleeping bag. And as we know, air is a wonderful thermal insulator as well as air doesn't get wet nearly as quickly as clothing would. This means that you are warmer at night and your body doesn't have to work as hard keeping you that way, which results in a more comfortable night's sleep. Pro tip: if you like your new clothes to not be ice sheets in the morning, bunch them up at the foot of your sleeping bag; they'll stay warm with you without soaking up all your sweat (which would cool you off quicker than you can stay warm when you're sleeping). Also, if you want more insulation for your sleeping bag, wrap insulators around the outside (like a thick wool blanket and a plastic/waterproof outer layer to keep the wool dry).

So the radioactive part could be explained by one of the groups members working in a nuclear facility and then sharing clothes with his mates. The missing body parts cant be explained by animals though. There were no bite marks or something. The tongue was most likely removed while the person was still alive and what animal is strong enough to rip out an entire tongue and then stop right after that and dont eat anything else and all without leaving any marks?
@REIDAE
@REIDAE 3 жыл бұрын
The missing tongue can easily be explained by the person accidently biting it off themselves from it going completely numb. Eyeballs falling out of a body postmortem is also quite a common occurrence. Several had no clothes on because it happened when they were sleeping and they fled immediately without stopping to look for their clothes buried in the ice and snow. They could have also taken their clothes off themselves since extreme cold can cause people to paradoxically undress. The tent was discovered 2 months after the incident so the wind could have already uncovered the tent, plus it doesnt necessarily have to be completely covered, just some pieces of ice had to fall on it.

Anton, just quick question. As I understand, several of these people were severely injured. if so, how did they make it to the fire, and then went to the forest or back to the tents? I understand the avalanche causing injuries, but the rest doesn't make muck sense.
@REIDAE

you can still move around after receiving those injuries. Its not like they lost their legs and there have been instances where people survive even gunshots to the head.

Yup, you can continue to function normally or apparently as close to normal when you're a couple of seconds away from death, during the winter war there were a lot of soldiers who just sat down to rest to die immediatly afterwards. Survival conditions like this force the body to continue to operate in unison as long as possible, if their injuries didn't produce internal bleeding, a perforated lung or such they could ignore the pain and discomfort for some time while they continue to try to find a way out of the situation they're in, since treating the injury becomes a 2nd priority and they focus on the immediate threat (the possibility of another avalanche and remaining out in the cold).

So they were sleeping while snow crushed their chest and skull, and after such injuries they were able to cut through the tent, without wearing clothes decided to randomly run a few miles away, then lit a fire and eventually died. Ok. To me, alien theory still is more ‘scientific’.

What's the hard part to understand? A few years ago a friend was involved in a car accident and remained unconscious for about 5 minutes and yet was able to get out of the car. How did that happen? Did aliens help her out? No, not likely, maybe it was a yeti who just happened to be passing around. An invisible yeti probably, since no one saw it.

After all these years, this is the most reasonable and thought out explanation of what happened to those hikers at Dyatlov Pass. Being woken up to find your tent collapsed and covered with snow would make your only method of escape to cut the tent. And then the explanation of why they were all in different places, also makes sense.

A documentary I watched many years ago said they pitched the tent where they did on purpose then cut holes in the side facing the tree line so they could keep a lookout for something that had been stalking them. There's a photo albeit a bit blurred of something big in the woods.

Part of the reason why we have evolved as a species to regard death and injury of our fellow creatures with such powerful emotion (creating terms such as "tragic" "poor people" and "oh no!" is because it creates a build-up of stress hormones (such as adrenaline) and a cascade of neurotransmitters which stimulate neuronic connections, forming the physical structures responsible for strong, easy-triggered memories, potentially leading to post traumatic stress and its resulting syndrome. When we combine this phenomenon with a powerful curiosity and a compulsion to find real answers as to WHY tragedies occur, we all benefit from the knowledge and can avoid those deaths or injuries in the future. In tribes or subcultures where people look upon what we call "tragedy" as something to just walk around and ignore, getting on with our business like nothing happened, or when we ignore the suffering of those in other tribes and say "Sucks to be them!" without regard to the fact that it could be "us" tomorrow, we inevitably suffer the same pain...pointlessly. This is one reason why nationalism, tribalism, racism, and all other products of lower-ordered xenophobia very rarely help us as a species. When we ignore THAT tragedy, like dismissing fascists as they march down the streets chanting "Blood and Soil!" as "just a bunch of fools" rather than follow them, take down license plates and get pictures of them so we can be ready to round them up and prosecute them when they inevitably start killing people, we suffer the same pain as others have at the hands of these protohuman misfits...pointlessly.

I've seen many documentaries and programs on this incident for years. Not a single one broke it down so well and clearly delineated the most likely causes based on science and known fact. I've heard every offered explanation. None even came close to Anton's hypotheses. Obviously there is monetary incentive to hyperbolize on PAID network programming (You listening, History Channel?) Even their big network budget graphics departments' animation couldn't hold a candle to the effectiveness of a few simple diagrams coupled with Anton's dialogue. Entertainment vs. Information (You listening, cable news?) Anton gets another subscriber today. Well done, Sir.

I've watched a lot of the Dyatlov stories... this is the best explanation I've heard. Thank you for sharing and the really clear explanation. I think we can call it solved now. May they rest in peace. ps. Another factor I haven't really heard discussed is the impact of adrenaline rush; they may not have felt the cold initially, prioritizing getting the injured to safety and assuming they could go back and get their gear.

After learning that the tent was erected on a cut-out into the snow covered slope, everything now makes sense. No Russian Yeti, no Spetznaz on secret maneuvers w/nuclear weapons, no murderous locals....just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time in the dead of Soviet winter. Case closed.
