What Happened to 2023? Project and Channel Updates

I have a lot of projects. Maybe someday I'll get some of them done.

I don't think its a case of "nobody cares", its a case of "we enjoy your content no matter what". Your variety is what makes you interesting. The farm stuff, the regular car stuff, the oddball logging robot. Your videos have been the highlight of my sundays for a while now. Don't make any drastic changes, just do what you want to do.

To me, the magic of WWW is Wes. You're the reason I watch every video you post. I don't care whether it's a build video, will it run, repair, diagnostics, or whatever, as long as it features Wes' brilliant mind solving a problem and injecting your unique humor. That's the recipe. I've described your channel to friends as the Dr. House of vehicle diagnostics. My advice, for what it's worth, don't lose what makes Wes who he is. I also really enjoying the occasional cameo by your family. I don't know Wes, and will probably never meet him, but he seems like someone I would want as a friend, and that's why I watch.

I'm a mechanic from Germany and I watch every video you put up. Because of the 4 mentioned points. And because you are a hard working, funny und educated person. I like the 'not edited out' mistakes, because they happen to me as well. Hard for me to make suggestions, other then: don't stop making the videos you did. And yes, there is no huge demand for your genre. There are much less people that like watching 'down to earth' (technical) content without clickbait, then the sensationel scripted reality media stuff, the majority is powerful clicking on and KZbin ist built for. But there is no german channel in your genre, that can keep up with your videos, educational-,humor-,contentwise. So I stick with your, Matt's, John's, Andrew's, ... videos. Stay healthy!

I think you might be overlooking a thing or two. The one that comes readily to mind is your presentation. You have a hell of a droll sense of humor. Combine that with your ability to laugh at yourself and the skill that you bring to each task then the content doesn't matter as much because you bring it alive. Hell, Wes, I'm more than a bit older than you and you always teach me something. And I finish the video feeling better. For my 2 cents you're doing just fine. And I thank you.

Hey Wes, I’m a retired architect that worked at a very large west coast aerospace company. You remind me of the Equipment Engineers that I had the pleasure to work with. They were responsible for procurement thru operations of 100’ 5-axis routers to autoclaves big enough to drive a semi into! They were also fearless, would tackle the smallest to the largest equipment. They also treated their own vehicles like puzzles to be solved, whether the vehicles were broken or not 😂. Carry on, you’re just fine. Keep finding the humor in things even though it’s tough sometimes! From a fan!

I think your core brand is a story about a small-town mechanic who is always challenged with repairing rusted out old junk and cheap imports that comes into your shop. Your ability to diagnose and fix these problems in a funny way, with professional (not half-ass) solutions, makes your channel interesting and fun to watch.

Just speaking for myself, a guy who did a lot of wrenching many years ago, I watch your videos because of your wry sense of humor, your amazing ability to diagnose, think things through, diagram out, explain your logic, fabricate parts, and your humble ability to discuss your mistakes. It’s literally “watching you work”. My personal favorites are where you receive a really messed up “piece of hot garbage” to borrow a phrase from Mortske, and you diagnose it, fix it and get it operating again. That could be anything from an old welder to a snow mobile to a vehicle. Adding the extra touches such as music etc. are nice but not why I watch. Wes, the reason I watch you is that you have such an amazingly broad set of skills at your disposal. You are an engineer that does mechanic work and a bunch of other stuff. I don't know of anyone on KZbin with your breadth of skills. Fabrication, electronics, CNC, nothing seems to intimidate you. That is really cool and that's what makes you unique in my book. I always enjoy seeing your family......it keeps us in a reality context. Your struggles with projects and how to use your time are the same that plague us all and it's always interesting to see how you navigate all that. My sense is you would feel better about yourself if you cull the waiting projects about 50% just in self defense....get some of these off your list.....as in, trash some stuff or get the wife to help market the scrap. I was thinking the same after watching all of the projects sitting outside. If you know people who want some of them, let them change owners. In total, they look like a problem of an unrealistic perception of time availability. The interior projects could be a similar situation if taken in whole, but I see that if some were to be completed, they could actually help productivity. Do you have someone available who could take on small assignments? A high school mechanics student? A nephew?

Wes, I am a 73 year old man who went to auto mechanic school in 69and 70. Never used it to make a living but it was good education for life. Was an owner operator for 30 years and a backyard mechanic all my life. your videos are good to me because they show your life and the knowledge you have gained. In my opinion, your best videos are when you go rescue some junk with your father. I like the old equipment your Dad drags home, and I find it interesting when you are working on tractors, loaders, etc. I also like your will it run videos, cars, trucks, 4 wheelers, etc are all good. The first video I saw was diagnosing/fixing some tractor problem with your Dad. I think capturing those moments is a good thing for everyone involved. Just at the 10 year mark from my Dad dying, glad I got to spend a bit more time with him over that final years, it took a while to make that a priority ... because life. I sure miss being able to share my odd project/problem successes and many struggles with him.

Wes, I'm sure hundreds of people have said the same thing already but I just wanted to put in my two cents as a long time subscriber.. Each KZbinr has their own 'niche' characteristic that makes them enjoyable to watch, Squatch has his absolute perfection, Mortske, his ability to remember interesting vintage car trivia, Diesel Creek obviously the large machinery, Pine Hollow, very detailed and advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. My point being, trust your gut and just do what you do. The longer videos is a great idea since we love watching what you do, tid bits of the family and other projects add to the variety of your abilities, and your real fans know that and appreciate that. Once you get all of your ducks in a row like organizing the shop and finishing the lingering projects you have laying around, it'll clear out some space in the shop and in your mind for the possibilities ahead. So if you are looking for some advice finish those projects and get rid of the ones that don't have a future and you know it, the sooner the better. Then hone into what made your channel great in the first place, your ability to fix anything that is thrown at you. Agree with him too - I've been here since the location X times, the first one might have been the dragline crane, but I don't watch the videos from your "youtube friends". It is mostly the person, not really the genre. I'm subscribed to other persons who have approx as many subscribers as you - they are great in their fields, make great content, but maybe this is the "extent of the territory" if you don't follow the algorythm, i.e post more often, longer videos and ask everybody to subscribe and so on. The logging robot is not really for me, but still would watch it. I would much rather enjoy seeing you paint. :) I paint bikes and smaller repairson cars, but only in the summertime as my shed is not insulated and it is always something I dread and usually do twice to be acceptable. :D

Older videos getting more views is not a problem. People find you, watch your current stuff and then wonder “What else has Wes worked on?” and the bingeing begins! Try not to overthink it Wes… you’re doing great. Also, many of us appreciate your improved sound and editing. You have so many comments I don't know if you will ever read this, but I like the bounce around content. I almost always learn something watching you. I subscribe to 8 you tube channels and yours is generally the only one I do not skip ahead several times in 30 minutes. I am a retired machine shop teacher, welder, and farmer, I still enjoy making a tractor bucket for a neighbor or re working a trailer or rebuilding a hydraulic system. Your ability to solve electrical problems has me in awe. I think if I were you I would probably be satisfied with 300K dedicated viewers, not worry too much about expanding and just relax. When it comes to older videos being watched a year or two later, I personally have all your past videos after I found your channel after it was referenced in another care repair video. That channel I no longer watch, but I am a fan of yours for a couple of years! Keep doing what you do, some laughs, some tears (rust buckets), some learning, and some just good old stories. Don’t stray too far from the format you have now. It works. We click to watch as soon as content is uploaded. You’ve built a fan base without ever resorting to like and subscribe being thrown around. That’s a faith in your audience that we respect and admire. I like your interaction with the audience and the dog. You’ve got the measure of both of us in terms of what we are thinking and what we’ll react to. Humour, interest, nationality differences and the level of experience that we have. I’ll never work on a sketchy logging robot but I’ve got some skills in electronics and mechanics that I can use to follow where you’re going with it. That makes it interesting for me but it’s pitched at a level that someone non technical can grasp too. You are one of three of my favorite YT channels. Likes are no music, no time lapse, variety of projects, humor, and repair of any machinery. The one thing that makes a channel successful imo is the personalities. Your extra views in years following release may be due to mentions you get on other channels. A few collaborations or cameos with other YT channels would spread the word.

First of all, you are my #1 choice for KZbin videos from all my subscriptions. Your sense of humor, obvious intelligence and rural spin on things keeps me coming back. Your editing is spot on for your audience. Plus, I live in a climate like yours and I appreciate the fact that sometimes nuts get rusted and bolts break off. Now, having said that, I'm going to "name names" for a little bit here. I also watch Rainman Ray, and his editing drives me bananas. I really don't need to watch him remove every single lug nut or every single bolt on a valve cover. Drives me nuts (no pun intended). I've never felt myself getting frustrated by your editing. And, as far as the type of videos, I like your variety. There are channels out there that specialize in rebuild/restoration like Vice Grip Garage. But, I actually think the name of your channel says it all. I like to Watch Wes Work. I like your insight, diagnostic thought, and your comments while you're working. Anyway, your channel just works for me. I wish you could post a couple of times a week, and I'd watch every video, but I can totally understand why that isn't possible.

The best part about this channel for me is the way you edit your videos. They’re edited in a very calm and relaxing way. Two things, possibly already mentioned, but in my words: 1) Don’t worry about being more chatty and longwinded occasionally; channels like yours thrive, in part, because we like hanging out with you! Even for those of us that are technical (and/or living with Asperger’s) the personal connection matters! 2) Whether or not someone is consciously aware of or can identify “good editing” or “high production values,” the simple fact is that all people everywhere are drawn to excellence-it’s as natural as gravity… that said, we’re not here to watch feature films, and excellence can manifest in lots of different ways. Wes, some of us absolutely noticed the improved production quality you were putting into the videos (I had to double check that I wasn't on a ThisOldTony video on a couple of the intros). If you're happy with the extra work, it does get noticed. My $0.02 only, we love the content you put out no matter what length, how much you ruthlessly edit it or what you're working on. I think your best videos are when something is so crazy you start laughing in the video and want to show us what you found. As far as your older videos getting more views, when I first found your channel, I started binge watching all your older videos. Two things: One. Concerning building a story. Some channels excel at this, but they end up feeling scripted. Two. I love the hit or miss with repair and diagnostic videos. I always learn something and they feel genuine. Sometimes it's a complicated problem, and sometimes it isn't. Real life works that way, and your videos reflect that. Final note: Those of us who work with our hands enjoy watching someone else work. It's cathartic when you see someone you respect run into roadblocks, because we all run into roadblocks. You mentioned wanting to follow a narrative in your videos' style and how that factors into your "not wasting people's time" methodology and I think you're doing great at that already. What I've come to notice about most successful KZbin channels is that the success seems to be heavily reliant on the channel's personality which you have a ton of. To me, your channel is already a huge success, which I'm sure other people reading would agree with. My wife and I have been watching your videos since back when you were repairing CNC equipment. We've enjoyed all of it. The variety of things you've worked on and the skill you show in analyzing problems make what you do very interesting. The little side parts with your wife and son are fun to watch as well. Keep on doing what you do as you want to do it. Don't worry much about editing quality in the videos. Video length is not much of a problem. My wife gets a little antsy after about 30 minutes or so, but I don't much care how long they are. Music is always good if you want to fast speed through something repetitive. And laughed at your mention of Diesel Creek, the master of projects not finished and if anyone doesn't believe it, watch his latest 1.5 hour video about them.

The variety is what makes your channel special. As for the need for "clean editing", the problem is that it ends up looking slick. Professionally produced which is what everyone is fleeing from. I 100% agree with liking the variety. It seems like the return from the hours you probably spend editing and polishing is not worth it....for me, I'd rather have another video instead. And while I love the new stuff and new gadgets, I kinda miss some of the repair videos. So for my $0.02 (which is probably not worth $0.02), keep doing what you're doing, but throw in some repair/diagnostics videos with the time you free up by agonizing less over the editing. And 30 minute length works for me...can always have a "part 2" etc. if too much content. Happy 2024(!).

Speaking as a mechanical engineer, which I am sure that you will appreciate :-) What I appreciate in your work is the scope of your projects, and the analytical method that you use (along with considerable skills) to solve the problems presented. I am always entertained and am always learning. You also have a wry wit that keeps it somewhat light and entertaining. From the KZbin perspective, IMO your audience is static with your current content at the current pace that you are creating it. You have all the subscribers who will watch every video that you put out, regardless of when it comes out that you are going to get. Those attracted to your content are more comparable to the audience of Mustie1 than Mortske. Like Mustie1, you never know what the next project is going to be. You have to THINK (and want to think) to enjoy the videos. One never knows what the next project is going to be. That is a great channel model IMO. I think if you could up your pace to one video a week, released at the same time every week, that would do a TON to improve recommended views and grow your subscriber base. People will look forward and tune into the show once a week (just like we used to watch TV back in the day.) But every other week, uneven schedule etc...your current subs are going to tune in, but it isn't the best pace for pulling in new viewers. I know that one video a week is a tough pace as you have mentioned in the past. But imagine how happy you would make your fans!

Wes just keep doing what you're doing it's amazing and I love watching everything you make but I do have a few suggestions: 1. Make longer videos, I think a lot of people would agree when I say an hour is about the perfect length. 2. Make more videos, you might not think it's interesting but I would love to watch you rebuild that loft thing, or just rearrange the shop while you're talking about it, really just anything you're doing make a video about it. 3. I think people are interested in your videos because of YOU not so much because of what you're doing in them, just keep being yourself. 4. When you're editing videos leave in the parts where something doesn't go right or you get really frustrated, it adds a real world touch.

You're fine Wes, there's nothing wrong with your brain. You're a very intelligent and technically minded man and I appreciate that you take the time to share your knowledge. I watch your channels because they're genuine and unscripted, not fake click bait crap like other channels out there. We share a lot of common interests and skills too. I've been into automotive and mechanical stuff since I was a kid. I worked in auto recycling and salvage for 20yrs, I was a production machinist for 10yrs, and now I travel around the country and fix steel mills for a living. It's nice to be entertained by someone I can relate to who has the same skill sets that I do. Will it run videos are like belly buttons, everyone seems to be making them. There's nothing wrong with them but they get kind of samey after a while. The technical videos you make are a long term investment. I've had problems with certain things in the past and have found videos that are a few years old that helped me solve the problems. Build videos are also a long term investment, like the bucket you made for your skid steer. I guarantee someone who buys a Thomas skid steer with a worn out bucket is wondering how/if they can fix it economically. You're doing a fine job, and don't let anyone tell you anything different. Sell it / scrap it. If it doesn’t bring you joy, or you’re not excited to do it.. just sell it! Projects that loom over your head that you can’t or won’t do, eat away at your joy. IMO, I just recently had to clean house, and boy what a relief. Hang in there, you are doing great Also on the channel subject, I like just the more raw what’s happening, I also like cutting out the fluff. But I like candid oops I messed up and that ain’t good. 15-20 min videos are great Keep it up and don’t burn yourself out.

Wes, you possess a rare variety of excellent characteristics. Extremely: hard working, talented, intelligent, humorous (with sarcasm!), detail oriented, retentive, methodical and simply gifted! My best advice to you is JUST BE YOURSELF - that is why you have so many followers! Your old videos might be getting more hits due to new subscribers who are working backwards to see your work from the past. Edit the videos to YOUR liking - sometimes unpolished and uncut vids show a more human side to how things REALLY ARE! We all make errors and goofs and it helps us feel more connected instead of watching some sterile, seemingly perfect guy working in a pristine, ER room type environment. Who the hell works like that?? LOVE your channel and content, and again, do what makes you happy!
