This is just not true. Minecraft has had so many more opportunities that were given by Microsoft. Bigger budgets for updates such as the Nether Update, Aquatic Update, Caves and Cliffs, etc. They were able to branch out into other games, giving us Minecraft Dungeons, Legends, and Story Mode and Earth before they were shut down. The Minecraft movie might have never come out with Microsoft, though we’ll have to see if it’s good. Collabs like LEGO and Smash would likely not be here, and so much more. Minecraft Live would likely be toned down, and there would probably be a bigger gap between updates with lower qualities.

There is a reason for the inability to get an agreement. When Notch first found C418 he couldn’t pay him much, so he said that C418 owned the Minecraft music that he created, it’s his to post, license etc. However we see now that Lena Raine and Aaron Cherof don’t have those terms, Microsoft owns the music. So it’s likely C418 wanted to own the music going forward, but Microsoft wouldn’t let that happen.

I really, really like Lena Raine's work. Pigstep and especially Creator (my favourite Minecraft music piece) are just fantastic music in general, not just Minecraft music, and Otherside is pretty relaxing. But C418's had a more eerie and dystopian, yet familiar feel to it that made Minecraft unique. I really think Lena's music is better as overall music you'd want to listen to, but old Minecraft music by C418 is just something different only he can create.

Future film/game composer (studying at Berklee College of Music) here: When making a score for film or game, there’s two types of contracts. You can License your music; meaning the composer owns the rights to the music and sells a license allowing the studio to use it. Or (most common) a Work for Hire; meaning whatever you create for a project is owned by the studio/developer, and you earn royalties. Licensing is usually only used for smaller or indie developers with a small budget (Like Notch when he licensed C418’s music). But once Microsoft bought Minecraft, they undoubtedly refused to settle for anything less than a Work for Hire. But unlike movies, game composers don’t make much in performance royalties, since the game is not usually “performed” in a public space. So C418 likely stepped away from Minecraft for this reason, although he has never confirmed the exact reason.

That's a petty and selfish thing to say considering C418 only kept the rights to his music because Notch was too poor to pay him. C418 owning the music still (which by the way, is an unbelievably rare thing for writers to ask for) is the reason that no music from Minecraft can be used or referenced in any other media except youtube. That's a part of why Steve took so long to get into Smash Bros. there wasn't any music that C418 would let them use, so they had to use Minecraft Dungeons music instead.

I'll tell exactly what happened, C418's all music tracks were open to use for anyone and he held all the rights to the music , and as expected Microsoft wasn't comfortable with not owning any rights to the artist itself thats why there were clashes and he left
