Great video. I’ve got so many phenomenal stories as a kid getting to know DD when he stayed at my parents house for the memorial from 93-04 along with the 86 US junior AM and the 92 US AM. He was so competitive, hated to lose at anything, especially ping pong. I’d beat his ass, hed get pissed and wanna play again till he won. That swing, that ball striking was superb. 98 masters still stings but the 01 British was special. He brought the jug to my folks house and I can remember drinking a few beers out of it that week. Great memories. What could have been if he didn’t start lifting weights , and didn’t stop drinking Coronas. No question the injuries, but his competitiveness was gone in 02. He was the best as a junior, the best in college, and rose to be the best on the PGA tour.

I've always respected DD. He certainly is an enigma, but that is a good thing. Not everyone has to be a poster boy for idolizing, not everyone has to live out the caricature. I've always admired him, regardless of his win total. He is a success.

I never appreciated David Duval much when he was in his prime. I should've paid more attention. As an announcer on the Golf Channel, you can clearly see he's an intelligent and thoughtful man. His commentary is always interesting. At least, we still get to see him do that very well...

His injuries really affected his swing ! he was never quite the same. I remember , when he was in his prime, he hit a sub 60 round , unbelievable talent.

DD was just a marvel to watch,from his poetic golf swing,his straighter than straight left forearm and that orgasmic pure ball striking,we were robbed off a golfing great...in my small,and most humblest of opinion,had DD not encountered the problems he did,I firmly believe he would have been 10x better than TW and easily would have amassed well in excess of 20 majors,but unfortunately the Gods decided otherwise. Outside of TW,DAVID DUVAL is my favorite player from that mid to late 90’s era,it’s just a painful pity that his health did him in,but if he were to mount a comeback,I’d cheer for him without thinking twice.😉 Thanks for another awesome vid✌🏿🇿🇦

I think the reason I liked David so much was the contrast between his stoic approach to everything he did, and Tiger's unbridled fire. It made for a great rivalry. Love you, David; always will!

I miss Duval. He was definitely my second favorite growing up behind Tiger. It made me so happy to see him play so well at the 2009 US Open after 7-8 years of poor play due to injuries. I didn't even think about the Champions Tour, but I'd love to see him give it a go when he's eligible in a couple of years.

Double D was the smoothest swinger, with the lifting of the head in the follow thru like Anika. I’ve seen him live several times he has that magical way of just flushing his irons. Funny, I saw him at the Honda three years ago and the swing and contact are the same, he just is not as consistent. A true gentleman who never lost his emotions even during a bad round. Wish him well, I love his tv analyst work. Let’s hope he comes back to the Senior tour and wins again.

I’m 45. Growing up, I couldn’t wait for the weekend during my teen years because Duval would be battling out with woods or someone else. I loved David. It was a shame wait happened to him with the vertigo and back.

Saw him win at Royal Lytham 2001. He hit over to the right on about the 15th. He engaged in normal conversation with two spectators near me before starting his shot routine. Couldn't get anywhere near the 17th or 18th with the huge number of people. Was also in an ice cream queue with Tigers Mum and then wife behind us.

I remember the 59 ...he hit a 5 iron to 10 feet for eagle for the first ever final round 59. He was Thee Man at the time as Tiger rebuilt his swing

I saw him play for the first time in 1997 in Denmark (rungsted) Very talented player, very cool and very smooth swinger and talker. He is also very humble, and back in 1997 his ball striking was on a level that I only saw 2 other times in my life: 1998 Colin Montgomerie and 1999 Tiger Woods. David Duval is one of the players that can suddenly go very low in score and make some crazy good shots. I hope he returns just like Tiger Woods. It would be so cool to see them play again. I personally think that David Duval is one of the top 10 players of all time. Where players like DJ, and Rahm, Justin Thomas, Garcia and other top names can't really follow in his shadow. I tried the clubs that he played with, and it really impressed me what he could do with that. That was probably the hardest clubs in the world to hit that had the smallest head, smallest sweetspot and heaviest shafts. And I remember looking at him, like he just arrived from the planet Mars. He was just soooo different in his approach to the game. It really blew me away looking at how easy his warm up routine was on the range. Back in 1997 his swing was maybe at the very best, and his ball flight was just crazy good. You could see at that point in time, he had no lack of confidence. This was a very talented individual, where I think that if David played his very best against Tiger in his prime, I think that David would win. Tiger is a lot more consistent and versatile/sturdy than David. But David had these streaks of insane golf where he would just suddenly go 4-10 under par in a round.

To tie it back to this video, David told Speith the best advice he could give him would be not to chase length. He was winning without it and could continue to do so. Speith started chasing length and lost his swing.

David Duvall was one of my favorite players in the PGA, he just goes out there and does it with that nice smooth swing. There was a special on T.V. where they had Tiger and Duvall and to two players from the LPGA Tiger's team won but it was a good battle.

Yep, pretty solid analysis of Duvall. One of the purest iron strikers of the modern era imo. He had an icy persona on the course , all business. Other than Tiger, the first to noticeably reshape his physique in the gym.

I remember him very well. His dual with Tiger in his prime for No 1 in the world. He did beat Tiger n became no 1. The bane of all golfers... Injuries. It happened to Tiger too but he did make his way back. I hope Duval will do so too n wish him well!!!

Definitely one of the greats in my book. Love how he lagged the club on his down swing and fired his lower body at impact. He hit it pretty long also. I think he averaged over 300 a few years.

I was at the Sunday round at the Masters in 2001 and when David finished he looked so dejected coming off the 18th green and what I thought was strange is he had someone pick him up in a golf cart, he just looked so depressed I felt badly for him even though I was following Tiger and Phil most of the day. I don’t think it was his back, Wayne Defrancesco analyzed his swing from when he was doing well and when he was struggling. His backswing halfway back was much flatter when he was struggling and he was stuck inside on the downswing, with the club head way behind his hands at P6. But I also noticed his swing was continually changing throughout his career. In his earl PGA tour years, he took the club away on his backswing pretty conventionally, if maybe a touch inside, and had a pretty cupped left wrist at the top of his swing and was across the line at the top, but played well. Later on from 1999 and on he took the club away outside and kept the club in front of him halfway back in backswing, with a flat wrist and laid off position at the top. And the club was perfectly right behind his hands at P6, when clubs shaft is parallel to ground on downswing. So I think when his swing got out of whack he lost confidence in it, and put more pressure on his putting and he was not used to playing that way, and pretty soon lost confidence in everything. Don’t know why he could not find a way to swing like he used to, it seemed many of his swing problems stemmed from his backswing.

It was the year 2000. I was just out of college and starting work. I am a huge Tiger fan. A fellow at work was a Duval guy. We bet $20 a tournament before Kapalua for every tournament they both played in who would finish higher and it was $40 in majors to be paid off after the tour championship. I almost felt bad taking those hundreds of dollars from him. Tiger won 9 times and 3 majors. Duval won the Buick Challenge

You compare him to say Greg Norman, he only won two majors but was in contention for so many more. Some players just don’t convert their chances. What makes a Jack and a Tiger is their ability to close out a tournament. And that never gets old.

I recall hearing he had bouts of Vertigo but didn't use it as an excuse. If true from personal experience it never goes away. Jason Day had vertigo at the US open the year Jordan Spieth won. It was so bad he had to sit down on the course during the round. He came back the next day but was clearly not over it. Not heard if he continues to have problems.

I enjoy Duvall on the golf channel. He once said he saved 40% of his winnings. So I doubt he will attempt any more comebacks. He seems to be happy in his own skin and after all isn't that the best success. Great player back in the day!

Watched DD at the Open last year. He still flushes it, but even on the range he had the odd wild shot. Looking back he should have worked lightly on his back and avoided the crazy fitness rush and weight loss.

Agreed..phil and other players actually suffered trying to "keep up" with tigers fitness. It wasnt necessary..and left many of them injured or struggling with swings. Even Tiger himself struggled to keep up with his on fitness. Golf is way unique in this way.

He's not really overly twisting his back no more than any other pro. His shoulders tilt back and thru and gravity does the downswing. It was the weight lifting sessions in my opinion that part of the blame. You chisel to many muscle groups and now they can't communicate as well with your golf swing. They are tighter and your feels are off. Gary player was one of first to hit the gym, but he was just doing stomack inner core strenghtening and some leg stretching, not building muscle!

I think David himself has even mentioned/identified that. There was an interview with Golf Magazine a decade or so back (I think?) where he mentioned that his swing when he was skinnier felt so different to when he was "fat", so bad swings AND good swings felt exactly the same - _off_ - which is a terrible place to be when you're trying to contend in a tournament!

You can actually watch David begin to fight through his injuries in the uploads of tournaments here on KZbin; by 2001, Duval has an extremely pronounced reverse pivot that didn't exist prior. He definitely looks like he's trying to avoid putting pressure on his right side, and "saving" the shot with his hands/athleticism. Duval's swing throughout '97-'99 has significantly more "traditional" weight transfer and rotation.

A spinal injury never seems to go away. Golf forces you to lean over and lift and that is the killer move to a player with a bad back. It happens and playing through that type of injury is a very, very bad idea. It can only heal by rest, not exercise.

For a brief few years he was the worlds best golfer. Saw him beat Tiger in Houston at the Tour championship and destroy at the Houston Open, he eagled all four Par 5s in his final round. Amazing player. I always thought he had some demons. Maybe being on top just wasnt the rewarding for him! But he can say “I was once the best golfer in the world”. Oh yeah. Bad back...it can ruin all aspects of your life. Dont blow this off as minor
