What Happened To Domino’s In Northern Europe?

Iceland is a notoriously hard market for international fast-food chains to break into. Domino’s is the exception - the pizza chain has the biggest market share in fast food there. But that love for Domino’s doesn’t extend to the rest of the Nordic bloc. In October 2019, Domino’s Pizza Group, which owns stores in Iceland, Norway and Sweden, announced it’s exiting its business in those markets.

You have to pay the market wage, not a "decent" wage. The latter is subjective.

@@mirzaahmed6589 the market wage was a wage negotiated by unions...which makes it a wage that embodies "decency" in the eyes of the Swedes as THEY HELPED DECIDE WHAT THE WAGE SHOULD BE, NOT JUST THE MARKET.

@Agent Smith No, the market wage is not what it's worth, it's what it's worth, to the market. Free market capitalism has NOT solved the pricing problem.
@lordoftheflies7024
@lordoftheflies7024 4 жыл бұрын
@Agent Smith the unions are made up of Swedes and they have a large presence because the Swedes prefer them over the gov setting a minimum wage or entrusting the market to decide it all. So then, no, the swedes have spoken. They prefer unions. Unions are made up people, if the people of sweden wanted a different way of setting the wage they would have structured their economy differently. Sweden has one of the largest and influential union presence in the world and yet u keep pretending as if the Swedish people are not deciding to be a part of them and the unions just male decision for everyone. This is nonsensical. Ur next point is the swedes are hurt by unions, lies. As expensive as most services and products are in sweden, the quality of life is significantly higher as well. Not only this, but the wages are high enough to be able to afford the higher costs. Despite the high costs in this country, they have a healthy GDP growth. U expect them to sacrifice maternity leave, paid sick leave, higher wages and paid vacation just to get a cheaper service or product when sacrificing these benefits leads to less money in the pockets of the Swedish people either way? Again, nonsensical. The services will be cheaper but the swedes would be poorer as admitted by u. So again, what is the point of having a market value to achieve cheap goods if the people aren't paid enough to still afford these cheaper goods? And no, the market will noy pay a " fair market value" wage. U speak of subjective worth, but the employers decide the wage and their opinions as to what it should be is ALSO SUBJECTIVE. Most employers underpay their workers when given complete freedom to decide on the wage. If this weren't the case, the US would have a higher wage as its economics are further to the right. After all, it has refused to adequately increase a minimum wage and has had lower taxes on corporations for years, but the wages have remained stagnant Since the late 70s early 80s.

@Agent Smith If there were no pricing problem, then communism would have worked. SInce communism doesn't work... But snide remarks aside, you mean what someone is willing to pay you given the current rules, at the current time. There's no such thing as a free market.

They keep saying that the minimum wage of almost 20$ is what is keeping the Dominos franchise from making money in Denmark. That is just plain wrong and a simplified American way of looking at it. Proof rest in the fact that we have thousands of local pizza restaurants around the country which have been making money for years - if they can do it so can Dominos with a name brand. The fact that Dominos failed to operate in Denmark speaks to the incompetence of the Dominos owners. If Dominos were to provide consistent and high quality pizzas they would easily be able to compete in the Danish pizza market where local pizza franchises often struggle to deliver good quality pizzas.
@PP-yx4rv
@PP-yx4rv 4 жыл бұрын
well it is. There are other brands that do well, but they are other brands. Dominos is dominos, and their niche as far as I understand is dirt cheap low quality food. They could obviously change that in the nordic countries, but why franchise an international brand with that branding and sell expensive high quality food? it doesn't make any sense. Thats why the high costs of the nordic countries contributed to them not making money. I have bought several dominos in my time, all of them when I lived abroad and they where cheaper than a frozen pizza, and I happened to pass by. Wouldn't even cross my mind paying 5 times the price of a frozen pizza to get the same quality back home, and I think a lot of people are thinking the same.

@@PP-yx4rv No, you don't get it. Dominos in Denmark is actually more expensive than our local pizza joints so they should have at least the same profit margin if not better. Also, the owners of Australian Dominos have just started to reboot the business in Denmark so they must see that there are profits to be made. Hopefully they won't be as incompetent as the previous owners that got busted for poor hygiene and tampering with dates on food - issues that shut them down. The new Australian owners claim they will runs things properly this time around. If they perform and don't run into any food scandals again, then I think they will be successful.

Sweden has it's own "pizza culture" which is somewhat swede-ified (pepperoni pizza is not as popular or common as the kebab pizza for example) and you can find them everywhere. More common than sushi places. Everyone I know has their own favourite pizzeria that they either live close by or grew up with, a chain like dominos could never do well here.

As a swede I think the largest reason Dominos did not work here apart from the wages is the fact that in every streetcorner here you can find your local pizzeria. It is the most common type of local resturant by far and it is with truckers resturants swedens only real comparision to a diner in the US. Kebab and pizza resturants are also usually the same resturant here, it is a staple of take away and hungover food.

Swede here, all I can say is that Sweden has a much higher local pizza quality than what dominos can possibly offer. The main thing i’d say is the dough, where dominos feels very dry and bready, but also the ingredients. You really have to come here and taste the local pizzas to understand what I’m talking about. The difference is that big. The fact that domino’s is also more pricy than local offers, and of lower quality, and the fact that it is run by a major corporation which are know to push down salaries and quality for profit does not exactly help their cause. Kebab pizza in Sweden is not just a pizza, it’s a way of life.

@Ork Frozen pizza is huge in Norway, and has been for quite some time. I believe this is mostly because of the ease of just wipping up a pizza from the freezer, throw it in the oven and wait 12 minutes. Over the years the selection and quality of frozen pizzas have increased dramatically, and you are not stuck with the good old paper plate aka Grandiosa. Frozen pizza is also not something you buy due to lack of funds! My favourite will cost you about 10 USD... you can buy alot of ramen noodles for 10 bucks!

For anyone who doesn't know why dominos went bankrupt in Denmark is because an episode of a documentary called "Operation X" had an undercover worker at dominos and discovered that the labels on their toppings and dough was relabeled so everything they sold were old expired food. They figured this out by putting a cross with an UV marker and next week use UV light to see the same box of food was just replaced with a new label. Many had the fear of eating at dominos afterwards and they were forced to close down the business because of huge drop in customers.

American pizzas tastes like our store bought freezed pizzas and we only by them on emergencys since its not very healthy or tasty. And not just that, dominoes pizzas cost almost the double of what we pay for a regular swedish pizza the same size.

actually they are synonyms. Words change their meaning over time. Maybe 100 years ago these two words meant something different, but today Scandinavian and Nordic are used as synonyms. @@artyomarty391 Just because people aren't educated on the meaning of the words, doesn't mean they get to change the meaning of the words. People also tend to think Scandinavia is named after the Scandinavian peninsula (Which is why they think Finland is Scandinavian while Denmark is not). Living in Denmark, it is my experience that local pizza is run and operated by immigrants at a lower cost in facilities and salary and without the influence of union. When eating Dominos pizza in Denmark(and Iceland), the cheese was often referred to as “plastic” due to the tendency become hard when cold, that in combination, with the bread resembling toast bread, that is maybe why it is often referred to as American style pizza. In contrast, the local pizza often resembles Italian style pizza which associated with quality. All in all, I love our local pizza. The guys that run our local place “Milado Pizza” are from Turkey, and they are very good and I like the service 👍🏻 🍕🇹🇷👍🏻

Nordic people prefer local food rather than fast-food chains. 4. Delivery pizza service sucks in the Nordic bloc. Domino's could have done well in Norway and Sweden, but they didn't make a good faith effort to capture the market. Their website was constantly broken and they refused delivery outside a 1km radius. In my city their range didn't even cover the largest student village so when I was at a party there we didn't buy Domino's because they didn't want to deliver. What they could have done is make more flexible ranges so that they could cover key areas. Another factor is dining inn and on this front they didn't capture key locations in a lot of places. Once again in my city their store was on the outskirts so 9/10 times we would find a restaurant located downtown. I've eaten more at Subway then Domino's because Subway is at least in the heart of the city. Denmark was a better effort, but it almost feels like what they did in Sweden and Norway was more of a death spasm than a good faith effort to capture a market.

Never bought a frozen pizza in my whole life - They don't taste good and are almost as expensive as "real" pizzas from the local pizzeria. I believe that the prevalence of small family-run Pizzerias in Sweden is the main cause why big chains don't do well here. You get a "real" pizza delivered to your door for 100 SEK in minutes from the local pizza place on the corner, which a lot of people form a friendship bond with over time. These big chains just feel un-personal...

Worked in Dominos Norway for a couple of years, even with only 2 employees in the restaurant, and a good flow of customers/deliveries. The labour cost was still too high. It was a big problem.
