What Happened To Dr. Ian Malcolm In Jurassic Park 3?

Rumors about Jeff Goldblum originally being in Jurassic Park 3 have been around for over 20 years but was he ever REALLY involved? And what was Dr. Ian Malcolm doing during the events of the Isla Sorna adventure in 2001? Dr. Alan Grant returned but he didn’t have the chaos theorist around the dinosaur island that go around. I like to believe that, immediately after Ellie asked her husband to use his contacts at the State Department to send a rescue party to Isla Sorna, she then called Ian to let him know what had happened. After the helicopters landed back in America, Dr Grant was probably brought to a hospital for a precautionary health evaluation, and he got calls while there from both of them. The eye-roll that would've undoubtedly ensued, when Grant heard Ian's voice on the other end of the phone, would've been so funny. (7/17/2023)

In early drafts of JP3, Hammond was supposed to appear in a small role, but was written out following a fall that Richard Attenborough had taken and he pretty much retired from acting. So it's entirely possible that Ian was meant to be in 3 as well, but was written out in subsequent drafts.

I wish Dominion had used Site B. Especially with it being abandoned and restricted it would bring back the Lost World tagline of "something has survived." It could have shown BioSyn experimenting on dinosaurs that were left behind by InGen in the building of Jurassic World, and leaking them into the wild with the other escaped dinosaurs from the Lockwood Mansion.

In the novel of The Lost World, it starts with Dr. Malcolm teaching students about the extinction of dinosaurs at the university school. Kinda make sense after The Lost World Movie 1997.

They should've borrowed that scene from The Lost World novel and translated in Dominion, him giving lectures about Extinction theories at the Santa Fe Institute would've made more sense than him working for Biosyn.

In my Jurassic World Dominion rewrite , he was giving a lecture about how genetic power could've been used to help species that were affected by human activities ( Passenger Pigeon , Thylacine, Kauai o'o, and Dodo bird ) but InGen decided to clone dinosaurs. He would then also say " You'd think after the 93 Jurassic Park incident they'd stop the cloning of dinosaurs , right ?" " Wrong , Masrani Global got the Gene Guard act off to continue the creation of dinosaurs." " All of these events keep happening because they believe they have control but that's all an illusion".

Ian Malcolm telling the students that control is all an illusion would've tied things together about what Ellie Sattler said to John Hammond during their conversation in the first film. You know what also would've been nice? Instead of the whole "I knew your mom" plot line which I really didn't care because it was never established in the previous films that Ellie "knew" Maisie's mom, They should've had Maisie admitting to Alan and Ellie that she was the one who released the Dinosaurs into the world, and she actually feels very guilty for what she did. Dr Grant response to her with a callback to what he said to Billy in Jurassic Park lll about the best intentions. Instead of the condemning tone Dr Grant used with Billy which was his mistake, He tell's Maisie in a much softer tone this time... "Somtimes, the best intentions can lead to outcomes that we never wanted. But sometimes, out of those unwanted outcomes can arise the most beautiful things."

I don’t think you meant for it to be, but “being ridiculed in subways” has me absolutely rolling in laughter. In regards to Ian Malcolm actually being in JP3, back when the film originally came out, he was greatly missed by me. John Hammond also. To me, back then, those two characters were the faces of JP, and I liked them more than Grant and Ellie, so if it had been me, Malcolm and Hammond would’ve been back instead. Hot take. I know. It’s just finding a way for their involvement in the story already established is the challenge.

Unlike many fans, I'm one of the few who really love JP3. Yes, it has some cringe elements, but, it has cool new dinosaurs, and is rewatchable because it isn't some 3 hour slog to get through. I also appreciate that it boils the story down to people lost on a prehistoric island, the basic premise that is timeless, making it, in some ways, the movie that "The Lost World" should have been.

I think Ian took more of a back seat and was playing a role to keep sorna out of the peoples hands and tried to help maintain safety for the people while trying to come up with a plan to let the island sorna alone like he said "life finds a way ."

Considering where he ended up in Jurassic World- I simply expect Malcom dedicated his life primarily to trying to remove financial and public interest power from big genetic companies. Things got out of hand FAST on those islands, and as he saw it was already in the works that chaos was foreseeing what Ingen had done making it onto the mainland. And if that happened- the consequences would be devastating- and not in the idea that these creatures are so big and unstoppable no. But ecosystems will collapse, a delicate balance would result in slow but sure mass extinctions that will inevitably work their way into human life- which we know he greatly values. I’m more than happy he wasn’t in the third movie because he was likely already fighting a battle that even he was more than aware he couldn’t win. He could only be the messenger of something that was inevitable- and MAYBE in doing so the people it would effect would be mentally prepared and adapt quicker. Life finding a way. Chaos at its finest.

I dont think breeding in itself would change the dinosaurs in JP3 so drastically. Any genetic faults in the parentd would be found in their offspring as well. Completing more of a species genome or gene experimentation would be needed for those kind of changes.

I don't see the character being talked into going back a 3rd time to either of the islands. The only reason he went back a 2nd time was for his girlfriend so I don't see any explanation that would drive him to go back a 3rd time. He wouldn't have fallen for the ruse that Dr. Grant fell for in the 3rd movie.

Its sad to say but the movies did not do justice to the books , as Malcom well he died in the original jurassic park book .Harding administers morphine to Malcolm, who spends the rest of the incident ranting about science and philosophy while attempting to assist the other survivors. His condition continues to worsen, and by the time the Costa Rica Air Force arrives to Isla Nublar, Malcolm is said to have died from his injuries. Most of the parts of this book where spread over in to the 3 movies. Also the characters where different , Hammond actually disliked children and died at the end after breaking his ankle and being eaten by comptosauruses . Dr Grant actually liked children as they where so enthusiastic about dinosaurs . Dennis nedry really got a horrific death . The dinosaur blinded Nedry with its venomous saliva, ripped his stomach open, causing his intestines to spill out, and then crushed his head in its jaws. Nedry's remains were later found by Muldoon and Gennaro, by now being devoured by a group of scavenging procompsognathus. the 3rd movie where the spinosaurus was the main dangerous dinosaur , was part of a conversation of site B isla sorna and isla nublar . where the dinosaurs where created , and where several unknown species where created as well.

It didn't really bother me he wasn't in 3. I always looked at it as JP2 was his movie whereas three was Grants. In fact if He would have appeared we'd probably be complaining about how many times can the same trio get into trouble with dinosaurs. I would have much preferred a similar plot where Grant and Elli got sucked into going as husband and wife while leaving their own kid behind. Imagine that dialogue exchange between Ellie and Amanda, Grant and Paul: You may have lost your kid on this island Misses Kirby, but now thinks to you, ours may have lost his parents.

I think Dr Malcolm was trying to avoid anything to do with the dinosaurs and the Isaldm during JP3 so he could spend more time with Sarah and Kelly while helping the Costa Reka government to keep the Island out of bonds to people and I would like to he him return in JP3 as him and Alan could’ve had a Dyna I. During the film with Billy and the Kirbys.
