The Malaysian Grand Prix has been missing from the F1 calendar since the last race in 2017, but F1 fans want it back. The Sepang International Circuit is considered one of the best race tracks in the world, and somewhere that consistently provided great racing in F1. So why did it lose it's spot on the F1 calendar, and why hasn't it returned? Why was The Malaysian Grand Prix, abandoned by F1? Enjoy!

Man. That means you got to see Schumacher's masterclasses in 99 and 2001 in person. 🥵 This video didn't go into it, but 99 was one of Schumacher's greatest performances. He was so quick he had to let Irvine pass him twice after pitting. He pulled something like a 6 second gap in the first few laps, just to show he could, before dropping back to help Irvine in the title race. All of this on his first race back after breaking his leg at Silverstone. And 2001...well that was just bloody fun.

As former staff of Sepang International Circuit (SIC) the main problem with F1 is the ticket price. Malaysia is a developing country but the ticket price are same as developed country. Malaysian minimum wage is 385$, while the ticket cost 215$. While MotoGP ticket price are around 65$, you can see why MotoGP has full spectator.

@@arep7771 Spot on. Back in 2013, the "cheapest" ticket that I remember buying for myself was under RM100 (can't remember the exact price, maybe it was around RM60-70), and that was on the hillside view where Turn 8 is located. That was the only affordable option for me as I was just finished secondary school and I was watching it with a friend of mine who share similar interest on F1. For last MotoGP event for Sepang Circuit of 2023, the highest ticket price for the Main Grandstand (where you can see the pit) is just under RM400. It's a no wonder why a lot of Malaysians chose to go watch that (with their entourage from bike clubs of course).

As a Malaysian I’d agree that the interest for motogp was always more. But since the Netflix series, there has been a peak in interest in f1, more than ever before. I think the major reason as to why it’s so difficult to hold a Grand Prix here nowadays is the cost for the spectators. Ticket prices have just been soaring worldwide. It already became unaffordable to the average Malaysian in the 2010’s. Hope to see this track come back soon though.

Hi, I a Malaysian & attended the first race in 1999. Everybody was expecting a wet race, thus many brought raincoats. However, it was hot & blazing day and I regretted not bringing an umbrella, which would fit a rainy or sunny day. I remembered Michael Schumacher, with Mika behind him, driving so slow at every corners and sped up at straights, just to build up space between Irvine (whom is leading) and both of them. And I could clearly see Mika raising his fist, perhaps angry at Michael's antics. And the engine's sound and vibration was much better in 1999 compared to 2013 (my final attendance at Sepang). Without an earplug, or anything to plug the ear, perhaps one could be a deaf for a week.

Just last week I watched the two 4-Hour Mutli-class races of the Asian Le Mans Series and the racing was great. Many corners hve more than one line that can be taken. Even the first three corners are often a side-by-side drag race! I would love to see it back on the F1 schedule.

Here’s why it’s possible. A night race on a purpose built circuit. Add in the fact that rain is possible, you want drama for to attract new fans and want it naturally to appeal to the hardcore? There you go.

With current "prices" for tracks to get on calendar (total amount that tracks pay per year could allow to build one new track from scratch!), multiple great tracks will not come back.

To be honest, on top of the motorcycle culture, the sound of the V6 engine in 2014 kills the passion for some casual fans to watch the race.

A Malaysian here. Personally thinking, since the F1 fanbase is slowly growing (thanks to DTS), I think more people would attend if the ticket prices are lower than what it were before. Since it's closer to Malaysians and if the tickets are cheaper, I think more people would come and attend the F1 races held there.

I absolutely agreed with night F1 race. Even without F1 at the moment but Sepang international circuit are not abandoned but full house almost everyday with plenty of trackday, domestic and international racing events. I already went three trackday myself this year alone, what a spectacular experience SIC.

Tracks like Sepang, Hockenheim shod be back in the calendar. Get rid off Miami and Vegas. We dont want both the tracks as its jus the money and not racing. Your videos are making an impact and i hope it draws the attention of FOM, to consider. You might actually look like a representative for us loyal f1 fans. Thanks

Vegas was decent, and if it works in the long run we could see F1 host more events by itself and then go to Africa (f1 wants to go to Africa at some point, and if they hosted the event themselfs, it would be alot easier).

Unfortunately as the saying goes: money talks and bullshit walks. The cost to run an F1 race is costing millions and the Malaysian government knows this. Plus with Malaysia being two-wheeled crazy that's not going to happen in the long run

Not fair that this track was cut from the calendar. I think part of it was that the tickets were too cheap & they weren't able to generate enough money from spectators
@MrSniperfox29
@MrSniperfox29 6 ай бұрын
Actually the tickets were cheap because they were struggling to sell any at a rate to make the race profitable. I can't help but notice for all the F1 fans complaining what a wonderful circuit it was and how they want it back, none of you were actually prepared to go there and support it by, you know, buying a ticket to watch it. They didn't cut the race to replace it, they cut it because the government wasn't throwing money away
@connorappleton1945
@connorappleton1945 6 ай бұрын
@@MrSniperfox29 I mean if you are asking me personally I was 17 years old when the race was taken off the calendar, so I didn't really have much of a chance to go myself Malaysia was actually a pretty popular place for F1, however, one theory I have was that when Singapore (next to Malaysia) announced they were hosting a GP, the locals appeared more interested into visiting that race than the Malaysian GP. If you look at the spectator decline over the 2010s for the Malaysian GP, it fits in with the timeline of when the Singapore GP arrived on the calendar.
@MrSniperfox29
@MrSniperfox29 6 ай бұрын
@@connorappleton1945 Actually the locals are not interested in F1, they prefer MotoGP. While you are correct that Singapore did play a part in the decrease in ticket sales, it was more to do with non-locals deciding to go there instead despite being a "worse race". So as I said, F1 fans complain they dropped the race when they were the exact reason it was dropped. They didn't want to actually go to it

The Singapore GP entrance to the F1 in 2008 also impacted hugely on Malaysia GP. The neighboring country, which provides easy access to the circuit (walking distance or just a few MRT train stops from many hotels as F1 Singapore race track is located in the middle of the city), more attractive night race and also host F1 concert performance by top international artists and bands means many F1 fans must pick which these two countries they want to go, especially if they are tight on the budget. Often times Singapore GP was the choice. Even Malaysian ex-Sport minister Khairy Jamaluddin admitted that Singapore GP is more attractive than F1 Sepang Malaysia
