In a bizarre true crime story too weird to believe, FDR's son Elliott was accused of hiring a hitman to assassinate the Governor of the Bahamas. But why?

I was named for Eleanor Roosevelt. My Mom was a big fan of Franklin, she just loved him, so I was given the name Jacquelyn Eleanor Horn at birth. Now I have a granddaughter, Eleanor, named after me. She is a real Dickens and a smooth operator. When she gets to be a teen, they will have trouble with her. She has already decided she wants a limo for a car.🥰

My father was Supply Officer in USS Baltimore in 1944 when she took FDR from San Francisco to Honolulu for a conference with General MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz. When the meeting was over, they took the President to Alaska for a fishing trip. When Baltimore returned to SF my dad left the ship with orders to his new duty station in Washington, DC and was met by my mother and my oldest brother who he had not seen for over a year. My mother told me many years later that my dad had told her "the president is really sick, he will not survive a fourth term", or words to that affect. Barely nine months later he was dead.

I was at Warm Springs, GA about a decade ago whilst a Roosevelt family reunion was taking place. Gathering together from all over to watch the Ken Burns documentary before it was shown to the public if memory serves me right. I was amazed at how strong Eleanor & Frankin's genes were when I witnessed their grandchildren & great grandchildren walking around town & attending functions. A few men had Franklin's looks & mannerisms & there were teenage girls so tall just like Eleanor. It would be interesting to learn about their lives & see how being the grandchildren & great grandchildren of such a famous power couple affects their lives.

I think that Lucy Rutherford should be considered "former mistress". Toward the end of his life, FDR was exhausted and ill. He craved downtime with people who didn't make any demands on him. Eleanor famously treated their one-on-one time as an opportunity to pitch her own political agenda. Anna took charge late in his life as his protector as described in this piece. Her role in the Yalta trip was very key. She facilitated many opportunities for FDR to relax and conserve the limited energy that he had. Yes, Lucy Rutherford spent time with FDR toward the end, but no one has alleged the resumption of their sexual affair. My opinion is that she was an old friend that FDR was comfortable with and nothing more tawdry than conversation happened in his last months. But obviously it was hurtful when Eleanor found out, especially when she learned of Anna's role.

Your comment sounds like something Camilla Parker Bowles would say--the Chivalrous Mistress as Old Friend escape hatch. Though ill, FDR was still president, and exhausted or not, he had a responsibility to the nation. If unable to fulfill that responsibility, he had an obligation to step down. He didn't step down, but was lucky enough to have a wife dedicated to helping or herding him to fulfill that responsibility.

@@emilerose1424 You've been reading too many fan magazines and not enough US history. Eleanor Roosevelt had nothing to do with the Roosevelt administration in terms of cabinet leadership, military leadership, or other governmental functions. She was a national figure to be sure and she was Roosevelt's eyes and ears in many respects due to her frequent travel. He would use her to float some of his more radical ideas to test them on the public. Roosevelt is a complicated person and his health up to the election of 1944 was an issue. But he was fully engaged in government and national leadership to the end of his life. Moreover, he had long before made key appointments such as Henry Stimson and George Marshall and those people continued to prosecute the war to a successful conclusion. I stand by my statement that Lucy was an ex-mistress. Can someone stop being a mistress and just be a friend? Or does a dalliance in the 19-teens that ended 30+ years prior still rate a person as "his mistress"?

@@emilerose1424 If nothing else, I don't see how resuming contact with someone who once was indeed "his mistress" makes her, in 1945, once again "his mistress". Also I see no connection with Parker-Bowles and Charles. Their "affair" was ongoing from Charles' youth until well into adulthood. He would have gladly brought her into the limelight except that "The Firm" was dead set against it. Finally the queen relented and then the relationship was normalized and even consecrated. But yes, both men broke their marriage vows so your values do pertain. Your historical analysis is less acute. IMHO that is...

If you want to know the real story of why WW2 and the Cold War started one place to start is his son Elliot Roosevelts writings. FDR brought him along to his meetings especially the ones with Churchill and Stalin. He made sure Stalin and his son were well acquainted. Both FDR and Stalin did not trust Churchill at all. FDR has said on multiple occasion that Churchill/Londons goal is to both maintain the Empire and strengthen it. FDRs stated goal was to stop the Empires of Europe and make sure the colonies have their sovereignty. When FDR died Elliot Roosevelt met with Stalin and Stalin was quoted saying "it was Churchill and his gang who killed your father". Probably the best book to read on the subject is "The Clash of the Two Americas. The Unfinished Symphony" by Matthew Ehret. I have no affiliation with them but they also have an audiobook which can make it easier since not many people like to sit down and read anymore. It has multiple references on the bottom of each page of the book.

Sir Lynden Pindling was the premier of the Colony of the Bahama Islands from 1967 to 1969 and as Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 1969 to 1992. He was never the "governor" of the Bahamas. In the Westminster system as it applies to the dominions or colonies of Britain there is a Governor-General for Dominions, a Governor for colonies or a Lieutenant-Governor for subordinate colonies. Lynden Pindling as premier and later Prime Minister was the head of the government of the Bahamas was nominally the subordinate of the Governor and later Governor-General of the Bahamas, but in fact as the system works, he was the "head honcho" as all of the Prime Ministers of Dominions of the British Commonwealth are. Possibly the most famous Governor of the Bahamas was the Nazi sympathizing traitor uncle of the current King who was sent there to get him out of the way and to keep his betrayal out of public view. He was kept under close watch by several British intelligence agencies as well as the American FBI to make sure he didn't get up to any mischief. I'm not exactly sure what Elliott Roosevelt's beef with Pindling was.

FDR and Eleanor certainly weren't the best parents and didn't set a good example but FDRs mother is also to blame. She meddled in her grandkids upbringing especially when it came to discipline. She would tell them "I'm your real mother, Eleanor only gave birth to you". Teenage FDR Jr wrecked his car but FDR refused to buy him a new one because Jr was speeding when he wrecked it. Sara butts in and buys him a new one. Jr and John got in trouble at school so FDR and Eleanor takes their pony away as punishment. Sara goes and gets them each a new pony. When Anna and her first husband Curtis Dall got married Sara bought over FDR and Eleanor objections a luxury apartment in Manhattan. It was Sara's way of entrapping the newlyweds so she'd still have control over them as they could not afford the upkeep of the apartment unless Sara helped them out. In James's memoirs he actually got fed up with Sara's control and put his foot down. She wanted him to attend a house party she was hosting but he and his wife had plans the same night. When ahe threatened to cut him off financially he said, "Fine then".

When Franklin first moved away for college, Sara took an apartment near him so she could run his life. In essence, Franklin never truly left the nest. By the time Eleanor came into the picture, her parents had both been long dead, so she had no one to turn to when navigating marital issues. As a result, she relied heavily on Sara, which I'm sure she found to be a costly mistake in several ways.

I'm old and wise enough to know we should value leaders for their public achievements and not for their private lives. Yet here's how poor American education is. I worked in a social services office and not one of my young adult co-workers knew whose image was on the USA dime, let alone why FDR was associated with dimes at all! Anyway, thanks for the video, even if you made several mistakes in it.

@@SafetySpooon she got really pissed, when she discovered FDR died “on the job” at his girlfriends place. His girlfriend had been Eleanor’s private Secretary for some years, there was speculation that both Elinor and FDR were screwing her, Elinor found out, sacked her, made continuation of the marriage conditional on him not seeing the girlfriend. The girlfriend married, had kids, became a widow, then reconnected with FDR!

Reagan saw the writing on the wall about what the Democrat party was becoming (tax and spend socialism) and switched. He said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party-they left me.” So, you’re right-Reagan was about as far removed from the Marxist New Deal as FDR was from his morals.
