Never saw much of the guy, I'm an NFL fan not a college fan, but after looking at this the age theory seems to be the best, possibly combined with the losing accuracy after the arm injury theory. He was three years older than the other freshmen in college, that's huge.

He was held back in Middle school TWO times for athletic purpose ONLY. He was born in September 20 of 1987. His first start was September 8th, 2007. All his "Hype" was the fact he was 2 years older than EVERYONE he played in HS. And in College he started as basically a Junior. He had 2 older brothers, the first went through school normally, the second was held back one year for athletic purposes. Both failed at becoming anything other than average high school athletes. So their Insane and Corrupt parents were going make sure their 3rd had every advantage. When at Chaminade middle school and Oaks Christian high school the parents paid for other athletes to go to these schools to surround him with talent. One time after one of these kids decided to quit sports and focus on school, the parent pull funding and shipped him back to public school. Obviously this kid had no chance and it is obvious why he turned out the way he did. But he was NEVER good.

Well done! I'm in a 16-team dynasty football league where the only players you can draft in any given year are rookies. In 2010, I picked him over WRs Golden Tate (his UND teammate) and Demaryius Thomas, and one reason was his year-to-year improvement in such metrics as yards per attempt, completion % (68% in 2009, his final season with the Fighting Irish) and TD:INT ratio. I didn't even know about the age factor you cited at the 6:36 mark. I wonder how his career would have turned out if he had been playing behind an established veteran for a few years, a la Steve Young in San Francisco or Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
@josepharmstrong8025
@josepharmstrong8025 5 жыл бұрын
Probably would be either A-Rod 2.0 (fixes attitude and mechanics before taking an NFL start) or Blaine Gabbert (never improves, regresses hard in second year). Although as the video points out, Clausen wore out his welcome within his rookie season, regressed hard during his rookie year, and never made any improvements in his game. If you want to, watch 2010 Panthers-Browns and 2015 Cheifs-Ravens. Clausen still makes the same idiotic mistakes and miss-reads even though he was a 6th-year vet.
@markrabinowitz7070
@markrabinowitz7070 5 жыл бұрын
@@josepharmstrong8025 Thanks for the reply! Yeah, a 6th-year vet shouldn't be making rookie mistakes, especially one who had experience working in a pro-style offense, and attitude and mechanics were two areas in which he needed to improve (pocket awareness was another, as far as I recall).

@@SuperSparrow45 If a team is 1-13, there is no "doing your part". He made Matt Moore look like dan Marino. The only thing he was good at was handing off to deangelo williams or jonathan Stewart. @SuperSparrow45

@@devinhines7974 Nah fam. Nah. They put in a rookie QB and they expect different results. It was blatantly obvious that the Panthers offensive woes went beyond just the QB. And no, Moore did not look like Marino compared to Clausen. He was just as inept, which is why he got pulled. Their receiving options were pathetic and an already bad OL was made worse with injuries. And even then, this is to dismiss the notions that Clausen is a modern day Leaf. Which is wrong on so many levels. Leaf was a top 2 pick, while Clausen was a 2nd rounder. Both came in with drastically different levels of hype and expectations. Both careers ended in drastically different ways. Clausen wasn't a likable guy and was overrated, but he managed to make a decent career as a backup for a few seasons. Leaf meanwhile, was a complete wackjob, and not only his career, but his life spiraled out of control. If anything, Manziel is the modern day Ryan Leaf.
@devinhines7974
@devinhines7974 4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperSparrow45 i agree that the ryan leaf comparisons are stupid. What i meant by the dan marino aspect is that matt Moore could actually move the ball down the field, he knows how to call a game, when to run, play action, throw the slant etc. The year after he did pretty well in miami going 6-6 in his starts. Threw almost 200 yards per game and had over a 60% rate. I watched probably all of those games that 2010 season, and i noticed when matt Moore was on the field, there were more points on the board than when jimmy was on the field. And a good couple of Jimmy's touchdowns were either really late game or blown coverages. Yea matt Moore wasnt no dan marino, but my 10 year old self was pissed on another level when the panthers kept clausen in for that long.

Saying the Irish "weren't that good" his freshman year is an understatement. They were one of the worst teams in the country. They had no Oline, no running game, and no receivers over 6' tall. Ironically, it probably one of Weis's best defenses (but still not good). His sophomore year he was pretty decent, and his numbers were great his junior year, but Charlie Weis never had a defense. My most vivid memory of '09 is when he had his defense stand up and let Toby Gerhardt walk into the endzone in the 4th of a 1-score game so he could get the ball back with enough time to try to score again (they didn't). Things might have turned out better if he had stayed in college for another year, but he and Golden Tate left because Charlie Weis got fired.

Kiper also got paid to say the same thing about Matt Barkley from USC. They were both coached by Steve Clarkson, who is nothing but a jive ass flesh peddler. Clarkson charges outrageous sums of money and basically tells these high school parents if their kids want to get a scholarship, they need to go to him. Hell- Sol Maybe his shitty attitude had a lot to do with ‘giving him a chance.’ I know if I’m a coach & some cocky ass QB acts like he knows everything & won’t listen to coaching, then goes & stinks it up on Sundays, how many chances are you gonna give him? You want to spend 3 years coaching a dude like that? Sounds to me like he just didn’t have a real passion for football & was just in it for the paycheck.

Idk for sure, but the theme seems to be that cocky college players don't do well in the NFL. No matter how good they are. They could legitimately be the goat, but if they're cocky, they "just don't pan out". Almost like the other players won't help him be successful on the field. An offensive can quickly do that to qbs.

Stop...just stop. Let's clear the air. Ever since I can remember, tv has OVERHYPED almost every athlete in and coming out of college. It's all about their numbers, not the true athletes abilities and staying power at the next level. 1) Todd Marinovich (and pretty much any west coast QB from the 90s foward, 2) Johnny Manzel, 3) Charlie Ward, 4) Jameis "crabcake" Winston, 5) Alabama QBs overall and 6) Reggie Bush is just the beginning. And of course Clausen. I mean...did Clowney, or has Clowney, even come close to ripping up the NFL as touted? No. What about Brian Bosworth? No. Tony Mandarich? No...even though he might/could be considered as having the most solid 6yr split career between the Packers and Colts. What I would like to see are the analysts true percentages in picking these "once in a lifetime/decade" athletes. Now that would be telling. You can always tell a true fan pushing a narrative vs a thoughtful and educated analyst. Just close your eyes and listen. Clausen, although talented enough to play D1, was built by the media.

In college, I could not disagree more. ND has had far more overrated QB's. Dayne Crist, Brandon Wimbush, Gunner Kiel, Phil Jurkovec. All elite blue-chip prospects, and all either were average or barely/didn't contribute at ND. Clausen was multi-year starter and put up impressive stats. It's not his fault that Weis couldn't develop a good defense or run game or line. Those '08 and '09 teams were essentially nothing but Clausen and the TE's and receivers. No line, no running game, no defense.
