Her father screwed her up by pushing her into PGA men's events at an age when she should have been competing in tournaments with players of her own age and capability. She could not be competitive with the men and all it did was create hype and put money in her father's pockets. She never really learned how to win. When she came on the LPGA she wasn't prepared to compete at the caliber of player and then started to tweek the swing and then it was down hill. She never achieved the mindset to be a consistent winner.

When your game reaches a certain degree of excellence it's just a matter of career management to determine how much further you can go. I always thought entering men's events was evidence of delusional thinking.

I have followed Michelle's golfing prowess since she was in grade school and, yes, that's exactly what happened to her. First, her parents pushed her, then Nike, Kia, and others took over and further damage her skills to a point where it was too late for her to get it back..all for the sake of money. Just glad that she at least has one major (US Open) and got her education from Stanford; but what could've been if she was raised to grow like a normal kid and given the freedom to focus solely with golf in her own timeline. A prodigy that was mishandled, misguided, and drained from achieving her full potential//

She had a ton of hype when she was younger. She was tall and had a beautiful swing. That's alot to live up to. People saw her as the female Tiger Woods...no joke. They thought she would torch the lpga tour so bad that she would eventually play full time with the men. She could have 10 lpga majors and she still wouldn't have lived up to the hype.

@@IvannaNukya Good comments. She doesn't consider herself to be a victim. The irony is that her athleticism was just too much for her body. The torque caused by a swing like that...a great swing...caused her injuries. I would know, unfortunately. As a youngster I hit the ball very long, and it destroyed my lower back. Had she been able to handle the torque, then she would have won tournaments on the PGA tour. She was already better than 50% of the men on tour at AGE 14.

She didn't have a bad career by most peoples' standards but she didn't live up to the hype of being the world's next great woman golfer (Annika, Wright, Rawls, Zaharias, Berg) What happened? She got thrust into playing above her head by parents, sponsors, and other influencers and slowly lost confidence as the wins/made cuts became far a few between. Then when she got hurt real bad with her wrist at a young age they kept her out there and didn't have it fixed with proper rest for years. By the time she got proper help she became a head case and went through putting/swing changes the rest of her time on the LPGA. I'm glad she somehow made it out of that mess and got her priorities straight to go to college and graduate so she had something to do after her career ends. She'll go down as another fan favorite that just couldn't pan out, and a lot of it has to do with the people who were around her at the time and the lack of knowledge they had of the pro circuit and how to nurture a player into it.

So much hype, so much talent, so much drama. Faking injury to beat the cut? No, let's focus on many other players that have actually accomplished (Park, Kerr, Ko, Pak, Webb...). Hate camera showing her when she's near the cut line while so many other players on the leader board getting ignored.

Claimed my friend sexually assaulted her and stole from her to his boss who was a short Asian woman herself but didn’t take anything from anyone. A tough cookie who saw bs a mile away. When his boss said ok let’s call police and check the 2 security cameras, the truth was my friend never touched her and didn’t steal anything. She left but gave an elbow to my friend’s girlfriend on the way out. Wie is banned from the hotel for life. My friend told me as soon as she got mad, he smelled alcohol. He felt like gagging as she was breathing because it was just so much alcohol. I’ve smelled it before of course but my friend told me, not like that. This was worse

Agree. My niece was on the same road and noticed her talent right away at 6. She worked herself through the Jr. tournaments and started to rack up the trophies. We took her to a weekend scouting tournament for coaches of IVY league schools recruiting for their program. She blew away the field and when we interviewed the coaches they knew she is a rare talent. However, their comment was an eye opener. One coach said, players like her are generational and that they don’t go to college and just go straight to the pros. She was 11 at that time and was not even ready for college. We knew about Michelle’s road and did not want her to miss out on her childhood and teenage years. The family decided to let her grow in her natural pace and mature along with her age level. She still plays excellent golf but more so she a gifted student too, currently matriculating in school for advanced students. We will let her decide which school she wants to attend for college and if she wants to be a collegiate player. Sports today has too many $ invovled that parents see their child as a meal ticket.
@DanielSong39
@DanielSong39 3 жыл бұрын
@@franz289 If she is a generational player she will qualify for the ANA Inspiration, US Women's Open, and win all the big amateur events. You can have a relatively normal life, play excellent golf, and still appear in 5 big amateur/pro tournaments a year. The thing about golf is that it's very unpredictable. It's more common than not for a player to have a 2-3 year run where they achieve all their career success and do absolutely nothing outside that window. Sometimes if you miss the window it's gone forever and you never get another chance. Michelle Wie was really the best female prospect in a generation. Aree Song, Inbee Park, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, and Yani Tseng also come to mind but they weren't close to Wie at the age of 15-16. Also there are a number of awesome prospects that don't have much success (Birdie Kim for example, although she did win a US Women's Open). It's easy to second guess after the fact but if she didn't grab the window while she was playing well, chances are 50-50 that she would have become no better than a middling LPGA Tour Pro.

I have met people that have met her and have ABSOLUTELY nothing good to say about her! She would use profanity and degrade her caddies. She also would be denigrating to wait staff when she would visit here … got this from wait staff. Swearing and not tipping at all. I’m-sure there there aren’t a lot of people that miss her. Good riddance!!!!

She's a perfect example of what happens when you have horrible parents that are just out for Glory and fame and not watching out for their child and her best interest. At 13 years old she was 6 ft tall and had 4 ft long arms. Most powerful women's golf swing we have seen in quite a while. The world was at her feet and her parents told he mishandled her career. Instead of being a prolific winner on the PGA tour she's only won three or four two tournaments. They're women younger than her that I've already won 20 tournaments. Unfortunately the only be known for her height and her ridiculous power at a young age it's really a shame she never became what she could have been

As Yogi Berra said, the sport is 90% mental and the other 50% physical. That Men's PGA Tour stuff was ok for a one time thing, but then she was trying to hit the ball 300yds like the men. She's not only a great natural talent, but she's also a woman for Pete's sake. It really would be like asking Tiger, at those young ages, to begin in earnest competing in long-drive Championships. It ruined her.
@joeldriver5356
@joeldriver5356 3 жыл бұрын
Her competing against men completely ruined her confidence and caused her never to be able to reach her potential. Had she only competed with females and gone through all of the appropriate stages of development she probably would have been about like Tiger was on the PGA tour. She should have completely dominated the LPGA with her length. I don't know if it was her or her parents that kept insisting on playing against males but it was REALLY stupid.

She took ownership in that. She actually had the arrogance and gall to think she could beat the men. My fucking goodness how conceited and cocky that is. She couldn't even beat LPGA Tour pros and she thinks she was better than the guys. WTF?!

Respectfully disagree that a wrist injury caused Michelle Wie to change her prior classic swing into an ugly one ...Even her putting became shockingly ugly and no wrist is involved....In all frankness David L. is an overrated coach who also introduced the so called “ A Swing “ which is totally ridiculous...Jennifer Rosales swing at best is barely passable...About. 7.3 in a scale of 10...However she did have confidence and talent to compete fairly well if she only gave importance to her personal lifestyle that affected her performance....Michelle had a pure 10 in all areas of her game but was over her head and ambitious to compete against the men...Someone should take responsibility for this stupid position that Michelle took and everything must start with Michelle herself, her parents and David...

Not only her injuries derailed her but I tend to think that Leadbetter and all the tinkering they have done to what was a beautiful swing has hurt her game. They keep tinkering and changing. Should have fired Leadbetter and stuck with Gilcrist. Even Lydia Ko fired/left Leadbetter for all the time he spends with Wie, and Ko was ranked #1!

A wrist injury is awful for a golfer. Probably forced to play through injury because of sponsor money . Parents should take note of this. If there is pain, shut your kid down. Dont rush them back to sport. I had acollege baseball coach tell me he rather have a pitcher that started pitching at 16 because of wear and tear from youth pitching.

You can denigrate her lack of success to your heart's content, but you can't change facts. During her playing career, more people tuned in to watch her play poorly than to watch the lead group play well. She achieved more than many who have won more, by bringing new people to the game.
@warholscircus

I think fast-tracking her career at such a young age is to blame for a lackluster performance and many of her injuries as she grew into the game. Imagine the immense pressure to perform up to everyone's expectation, as well as your own, and listening to the critics abuses when you consistently come up short. That scenario has always dominated Michelle's game and has destroyed the dreams of her youth. Think about it. A young woman retired from a game she loved. Not because she had to, but because it had become toxic. Now, a mother, she doesn't have to play up to expectations, now she can play for her daughter. Personally, I believe Michelle has some crazy ass shots left in that bag of hers, and dammit, I wanna see them all, every last one of them!!!

IMO, she could be one of the greatest woman golfer in the history of golf if it wasn't the fault of three people. Three people responsible to held back Michelle Wie potential to be the greatest of any men or women golf history. They are David Leadbetter, and Michelle' parent. again this is just my opinion.

WAAAAAY back then I never understood why she was so focused on playing with the men...but it occurred to me that she had no chance of winning so it was an excuse and at the same time shed get a lot of positive press. Shes just your average pro golfer with injuries from over training at a young age. Shell probably win one or 2 more majors and do what shes been doing. Lots of top tens.
