It's insane how those tiny fish make a big tank like his 125g look do small. Usually It's when you put large fish in large tanks the tanks tend to appear to be smaller than they are. So It's very interesting to see that it can be the other way around as well!

It seemed like there was a mass infection from an exporter for CPDs a couple months ago. I ordered from a few sources and all similar symptom. A white internal growth but it was virtcal in the body. I ordered again after a couple months and now they seem healthy and stronger. A week and all still alive in QT.

After working at a chain store and understanding shipping is a major plus as a hobbyist now. Im getting back into the hobby after a hiatus and found your videos so wonderful for all fish keepers at any stage. I’ve had tanks since I was 8 so it’s 30 years for me and SO much has changed! I remember starting out with internal filters where you had to mix the carbon and cotton and all that fun jazz.

@ohrats7314 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to seeing it!! The New England Aquarium has a smaller rummy nose exhibit where viewers can control what side the flow is coming from in the tank so you can see them school up against the current and there’s cool Val waving around in there too. Plus there’s a timer for the controls so people can’t over work the tetras alone day 😅 Pretty neat little setup though

So excited, I wouldn't mind putting them all together after quarantine because you can put your hand on your heart and say you've done your best for the fish over the course of a few months to try and secure their future.

Yes yes yes. I'm so happy you are going with tons of small fish again, instead of the goldfish. It's not that goldfish are bad, but it made the 800 feel more like an indoor pond instead of an aquarium. I can't wait to see it.

I can’t wait to see Ladybird in there with all those tetras! Cory, I want to thank you again for turning me from a guy who adopted a goldfish to a full on addict. I have a question about tank size and stocking loads though as I research larger tanks. Sometimes it seems like tank size is suggested due to the size of the fish and sometimes I hear about the bio load. Bigger is always better but if you don’t have much space for large tanks, will more frequent water changes take care of the tank size issue- as long as it’s big enough for the fish to grow and be healthy of course. Thanks!!
@mrdesperate14 жыл бұрын
I hope you get an answer from Cory and I'm not telling you wrong, but the short answer is yes. When it comes to size/bio-load, you CAN get away with "overstocking" by using more water changes. However, I wouldn't really recommend it... It sounds good on paper but "more frequent water changes" will wear you down in the long run. I have found that packing literally as many plants as possible in your tank will greatly increase the amount of bio-load you can handle as well as reduce the need for water changes. Either way, I would stay away from "overstocking" unless you're talking about more minor examples, e.g. 10-15% over the recommended stock levels, not 2-3 times what you should have in there.
@alexkavo89304 жыл бұрын
Chad Windham thank you so much for this response. My tanks are heavily planted and well established. I’m just thinking of adding 6-8 white clouds in the mix. The plants and snails basically take care of most of the waste and my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are always around 0 (closer to 20 ppm nitrate). I only need to water change once a week. I think I’ll go ahead and try it and if it does seem overcrowded I can move them. Thanks!!!

A valuable perspective to share. An unknown X factor (weather conditions not considered by the buyer) can make a world of difference and result in ragging on the seller about something the seller really had no control over. Looking forward to watching them school in the bigger tank. Thanks.

Vendors tend to over crowd them in the bags. Not enough water per fish. Not enough oxygen in the bag. Delayed shipping causes the pH to drastically drop in the shipped water, and ammonia is extremely dangerous if the vendor has high pH water source. Some vendors just don't know how to adjust shipping methods to accommodate changes in weather.

Enjoy man, I've done something similar with a smaller tank and a "bit" less fishes years ago. Tanks are expensive in Hawai'i so had to make do with a standard 55gal tank. Built a similar cross flow setup that is on a timer to reduce the flow rate so the fishes can rest at night. I actually went with real driftwoods and used lots of real plants of various morphology. Getting some of them was really difficult due to Hawai'i strict live importation laws! The goal was a tank that's mostly self-sufficient with a mix of tetras, dozen siamese algae eaters, a dozen bottom-feeding loaches of several small species, malaysian trumpet snails, and small freshwater shrimps. The tetras was a mix of several different species that looks very different to each other so that they would school in separate groups. I found out the hard way that Neons and Cardinals are too similar and tended to school in one large group! The tetras was Neons/Cardinals, Rummy-Noses, Serpaes, Diamonds, and one other species I cannot remember at the moment. Had about 50-100 of each in the tank. Was cool to watch them swim in the tank in separate schools with them taking turns in spending time in the open and hiding in the dense growths, all the while maintaining the school groups. The siamese function as algae control, the loaches helps keep the snails in check and aerate the substrate, the snails and shrimp are bottom cleaners, and the tetras keep the shrimp population under control. It took a while before I found the right population density of each group for a balanced tank that only required an occasional replenishment of micro-fauna feeders for the tetras. Ran across yer video by accident and seeing yer rummies schooling is making me yearn to restart fish-keeping again. Unfortunately, I currently living at a rental that has strict aquarium limits. (Basically just 1 10-gallon max, which is too small for me, I only use 20s for individual quarantines and water conditioning.) Maybe in a few years when I have my own place...

I've found a way to get male neons color fully going WITHOUT finding a rare female. Simply get a mirror on one side of the tank. Have the top part of the mirror against the tank but have the bottom of the mirror about 2 1/2" away from the tank. They start flashing because I assume they can't fully see the sex. Anyhow do that for a week and they are absolutely beautiful. Newish to the hobby and love your content.
