Nice car. I'd recommend using a jack stand in addition to your floor jack. Safety First!

Thanks. If I get under car at all, I use a stand (as you can see in the fuel hose footage). Having a car fall on you must be one of the worst ways to go especially for a car fan 🥺

Love my mk2 16v, but i think the 8v is an easier engine to live with, particular the later digifant version! :)
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
The 16v was always the needy one, not sure if it was because they were always 'frashed' or just because they weren't as tough. Also Digifant looks after itself largely, K Jet had so many little bits and pieces that all had to be in sync for it run right, many of which were unavailable 10 years ago. Has that improved now the cars are worth more? If I was buying a Mk2 for track, it would have to be a 16v as it's so lovely to wind it up something you can't do that much on the road these days.

the back axle, at 3 minutes odd is it just a rust scab or a cut on the back axle?

Just looked 3:40 and it's a drip of lube from the exhaust fitting, the rear silencer joint is right above it.

I notice a lot of your vehicles are stored outside which is fine but at the very least buy a proper outdoor cover for them particularly the R8 or in fact any of them. It really helps with the bodywork.
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
I've actually got a cover for the R8 ready to go on. Just want to polish and wax the paint before. Covers are a mixed blessing and can do a lot of damage especially in the high winds we've had recently
@peterbest59388 ай бұрын
@@volkswizard I agree about the potential for some damage. I went with the manufactures covers for mine and they worked out well. They don’t last forever I found about 2years before they started to perish and leak. I’m sure you know make sure the car is bone dry before you put it on
@ventouxR8 ай бұрын
I think you have exhaust leak. It sounds like mine mk3 8v on cold start with broken studs on cyl 1 but gets quiet after warm up.
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
The exhaust is effectively brand new and still sooting up its seals, when I tested for fuel leak after redoing the pipe clips, look out for liquid, that's condensation from within the exhaust system leaking out of a joint. (Yes I do need to use it!)

Hello Andrew, do you know if the Milltek you fitted will fit the 16 valve? They only sell a full system including the manifold for my 16 valve.
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
That's a good question. I've checked the part numbers and aside from the manifold and connecting pipe the parts are the same for both. With OEM, 16v had a bigger bore so they didn't cross over. I'd have thought the 16v connecting pipe would be to connect their system to the original manifold but it's also used with the Milltek one. Best drop them a message as I am sure there is a good reason. The good news is that you get the same silencers so it should sound similar to mine (as similar as 8v and 16v can be).

Great update and lovely car. Mine is almost exactly the same - including needing similar body attention. So enjoyable and easy to work on. I would recommend upgrading to 16v or G60 front brakes - so much better for driving with current traffic. I have G60s and they are spot on!

I know! Luckily tester was happy to record a fail but then fixed it for me FOC, the horn is in the middle of the steering wheel and it's a bit crap, easy to fiddle with it and have it stuck down permanently!

Give the 7.5 a few more years and it will be regarded in similar esteem, possibly even more so, considering the white goods EVs we will be forced to buy then

Nice to see the mk2 come out of hibernation for some tinkering and upgrades - front discs look tiny - smoking whilst changing fuel line clips could make life interesting 🤓😝
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
239mm discs, I don’t think it’s too hard to upgrade to the 256mm from 16v but if you are going to do that might as well go 280 from G60. TBH they seem to work ok now so new parts should see enough of a performance uplift without adding weight 👍

Hi Andrew What a beaut, here in South Africa my buddy owned one in the 90s and was an absolute gem...it was a 5 door version 1.8 ltr 16V That motor use to rev up to the red line with such progression and had such long legs through the gears and as for the bodywork it was built like a tank Definitely one of the best GTIs ever if not the best in my opinion Makes todays GTIs seem as if they lost all the character simply because today you dont need much skill to drive one like a pro, the car does it for you

Good video Andrew... What headlining is in your mk2? It doesn't look standard? Has it be flocked? Or trimmed in something different from original?
@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
That is correct Craig, it was retrimmed at great expense by last owner, got the receipt somewhere. They often come unstuck and from the foam backing - headliner is probably the crappiest bit of a Mk2!

@volkswizard8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the ownership history Peter, all good cars but I'd go for the 1980 GL just because it's quite a rare car. I really wanted a Mk1 Golf 1.5 GX back in the day but insurance was too much and when I could afford it, a Mk2 GTI wasn't much more.

Here in the USA we received mostly Mexico production after 1988 of the Golf II.... Neither US made or Mexican made Golf had great assembly or in some cases even identical parts were from substandard suppliers for cars made in both countries. The best were always made in Germany.

I don't a Mk2 has much in common with a Mk7 which is my next oldest Golf. It's very subjective but there are 2 reasons why I kept the MK2 1) There's a lot more I can do to the Mk2, Corrado was done bar a big bill at Stealth for an engine rebuild at some point 2) The Mk2 means more to me than a Corrado as I met my wife when I had one, 100s passed through my hands etc

The car's not standard, it got Koni top adjustable dampers, can't recall what springs as it sits lower than a lot of 8vs though could be stock that have dropped a bit.
