In this video, the first of 2023, I share with you the things that I need to attend to on my recently acquired 1991 Mk2 Golf GTI 8v. Some may say these make it a bad example but as I point out in the video, unlike missing service histories, badly repaired accident damage and structural rust, everything can be resolved relatively easily, and after 31 years on the road I personally think that is a pretty good outcome.
With regards to the Dodo Juice polisher, I bought this not long after it's 2015 launch so have had it actually around 8 years. Every car I sold was polished using it during this time so it had a lot of use, much more than if I hadn't been 'in the trade'. So to last that long is a credit to it. I contacted Dodo Juice to enquire about spares and they did me a deal on an ex-demo V2 Spin Doctor as they don't currently offer a rotary polisher in their current range so very happy with that.
Check them out here ;

Yes Neil, it was indeed you, thanks so much for that, you quite possibly even saved my life! I now vaguely remember that from my years selling Mk2s but only because you reminded me. I guess modern cars have improved the way they inform us of faults so they are less ambiguous which is a good thing, especially when it comes to brake fluid!

@@volkswizard you're welcome mate and indeed older cars require a bit more diagnosing than modern motors. It's only fresh in my head as I have a mk2 sat in the garage that I'm still tinkering with at the age of 42, and I spend more money on it than I should 😂

Great video and a nice example of a mk2 GTi. When I replaced my wheel arch trims I didn't bother with the original pop rivets. You can now get 5mm plastic pop rivets, and they fit the holes perfectly, they can be subsequently removed with a trim tool, and you don't get any corrosion issues from the different metals. A useful upgrade and its what they fit modern cars with these days.
@Bob-sy7ln
@Bob-sy7ln Жыл бұрын
IIRC my mk2 16v had plastic trim rivets you describe fitted ex factory. There was definitely no bright metal showing in the fixing points. The same little gizmos my Tiguan ‘21 mudflaps came with! As you say metal on dissimilar metal corrosion will possibly be an issue here.

Well done Andrew a great video as ever it looks like a very solid car and a good base to restore and lovely to see an original example i remember going in one many years ago and hoping I would own one one day! Well done on the brake fault I remember a similar type of light on Vauxhalls which covered multiple things to do with brakes and my dad checking everything to get it to go out! Such a shame about the rear seats hope something turns up It would be good at some point to do a video with Graham and compare mk1 and 2! I look forward to future videos and seeing this car come back to It’s best which I know it will and great to have a blaupunkt radio to go back in it’s good they have remade them to keep the look and have modern features! Well done again Andrew looking forward to the next video hope you and Kate had a lovely Christmas and happy new year to you both

Lovely car, brings back memories. I had a black 3 door on a G plate many moons ago. Two standout memories - i fitted a Remus backbox from Tim Stiles and a problem with the handbrake. My house had a short steep drive and I got home from work one evening and parked up as usual. About an hour later I had a knock on the door, I hadn't put the car in gear and as the rear brakes cooled, it rolled down the drive into my garden wall. 😭😭. A great car but I had this secret disappointment that it wasn't a Big Bumper which I think came out the following year.

Great memories, well apart from the handbrake! That's why EPB is a good thing on newer cars. If yours was a G it would have missed bug bumpers by a few months as they came out for the 1990 model which started in October 1989, a few months after your car was registered.

Fond memories of a 88 16v I smoked for a few weeks as a px in 1996, not so fond of the 6 points and £150 fine as I was (rightly) given a few days in after stretching its legs on the M4 early one Sunday morning, how did I not see that large marked Vauxhall Senior! Taught me a lesson, nearly 30 years later!

The cam belt idler is key, I nearly grenaded by 8V as the idler was failing (bearing had failed with only a few balls left in it!) . I was lucky, went to VW and they wanted to take cams out, etc for full diag, went to my local garage, 3 mins later he had discovered the failed idler, stopped the car and I had to walk home!!

Another great video, Andrew. Has me reminiscing about my Mk2 8v which I had from new and then sold on to my brother in law. Loved it and more usable day to day than the 16v as I recollect. Has me sort of hankering for one again (8v) but I suspect that I wouldn't find one as original as yours in such good condition. Have to say I wouldn't trust leaving locking nuts off those beautiful wheels though. I can't imagine a replacement set would be easy or cheap to find. Using that Draper riveter also brought back memories of the late 70s/early 80s when I used to do the maintenance on my Capri. You're not kidding - that "feedback" into the palm of your hands certainly doesn't disappear immediately! Looking forward to the Blaupunkt video

It's buried deep in the memory banks somewhere but TBH low fluid is quite a rare thing. If you deconstruct the rear bulb holder caps off the spot lamps (3 small metal tabs iirc) you can use some alcohol and a clean microfibre and a screw driver to get them sparkling again, same with the headlamps If you add the Original small Hella blue decals to the centre of the spots they will look brand new again 👌🏻 I did all of the above on my late Mk1 cabriolet and they look superb 👍🏻

I had a MK2 Jetta (Big Bumper) GTI 16v. Mine came under a VW recall for a heater hose? modification to be installed. Has your Golf had this done?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
That is a rare car, I had one too, in a bluey green, H982 HLM. No power steering and some funny velour trim but otherwise beautiful. The recall was because the heater matrix used to burst due to excess pressure caused by the water going beyond a certain temperature. The recall chopped the heater hoses near the bulkhead and put in two valves one which would close if the temperature got too high. Once it did it was stuck shut so you got no heat. Eventually VW discontinued the parts so people ripped them out and put copper pipes in their place as I think the hoses were hard to get too. Mine does have this, they look weird when they don't have them as they nearly all do. IIRC 16v was much more prone to this as it ran a lot hotter than an 8v but all Mk2s had the recall.

Andrew, why would you not change the brake fluid? did you clean and clay bar the roof before polishing? Also as far as I known that nipple is not a jacking point… it was for a jig at the factory!
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
Haven't changed the brake fluid as a) don't have the time right now b) need to find where it's leaking from. The roof is so far gone it's not worth following best practice as I said in the video. It was cleaned though of course. Some things polish out, others don't and it's only on trying you can work out which is which. Hmmm good point re that nipple, well it seems to work just fine as long as floor is sound. It's under the bulkhead I think so has a lot of strength above it and I always used a rubber pad. I don't like lifting on the sills as it can split the joint quite easily.
@georgestarke1144
@georgestarke1144 Жыл бұрын
@@volkswizard With regards to the brake fluid loss, if you can't find anything obvious it could be that it is leaking into the servo. I had this on my MK1, couldn't find a leak although the fluid level was depleting. Turned out to be the shaft seal on the master cylinder had failed and the fluid was leaking into the servo.
@Jastor00

@@volkswizard James is right. The little round cup is NOT a jack support, and the reason they're pushed in is because of misuse (plus the area inside it is horribly prone to rust from the inside out). I know from personal experience on my '92 GTI. Used a jack and pushed right through it. The pinch rail works very well with one of the solid rubber jack cups that have a slot cut in it that prevents crushing the pinch weld. Well worth buying. Alternatively, there is a stout frame rail just inboard of that area that is much more suitable for lifting. Good luck with your project! Mk2s on offer here in the states all seem to be pretty rough around the edges. You got a nice one!

Thanks also for your long term subscription to the channel, hopefully the Mk2 videos will work for you as well as the newer cars seeing as they started your passion just like they did for me. In the R8 days I did indeed film outside the front door. Then I sold that place, rented somewhere where I barely did any filming and then in May 2022 bought the current house which is a totally different frontage to the one you are referring to. I didn't buy it to film at but the way it's all worked out, it's actually very handy to do that and it's much more secluded than the old place so neighbours don't walk into shot or drive past etc. There is an explanation in the "5 days with RS6" video because there is a behind the scenes look at current driveway/front garden 👍

Hey Drew, I thought it might be you, I think we've met in the past, can't remember when, maybe a forum when they were a new thing. Glad you like the Bremen, can't wait to fit it. I guess the level sensor could be playing up or the wiring maybe? They were designed to be over the gearbox on LHD cars so maybe the heat has got to it.

Proper bloke, proper car. Alan's a busy chap and his skills don't lie in fixing niggles on old cars like this. Interesting i thought low brake fluid would bring on a orange warring light . I love older card I had a XR2 in the that time zone . new cars seem solo less especially in the The last 10-15 years
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
XR2 was pretty cool, remember it well. My sister had the H reg onwards model with all those lights in front bumper. The one before with arch kit was everywhere back then especially in red but such a rare sight now. Having a handbrake light also do brake fluid is so 1980s! The light had a brake system logo on it but doesn't give any clue that it's dual purpose. I do wonder how many people ignored it and had a mishap as low brake fluid is one of worst faults in a car.

It makes sense to double up the work of the handbrake light and if the car wasn't 31 years old I'd have probably got the handbook out but I can forgive a duff switch on an old car but even that still works. Thanks for reminding me as I must give all hoses a visual check asap. At least the wheels will come off quickly with just 4 studs and no locking bolts!

Great video! The handbrake light usually flashes consistently when the brake fluid is low. Unusual that yours was on solid. Regardless, glad it was an easy fix.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan. I think solidly on means it's REALLY LOW AND YOU NEED TO STOP OR YOU WILL DIE! As it warmed up it started to flicker though not really consistently which I am assuming was because the fluid level went up with the heat. It was an easy fix but still need to find where it's going as it's nothing you can ignore, unless it's low due to previous work on the braking system. I'll check the bills and see if there is a clue 🤔

@@volkswizard Many thanks Andrew and no worries 👍👍👍. My previous 91 8v came with 15 inch ra's and my current 91 16v also has 15 inch ra's, they are a splendid wheel and i think they even look better than the much dearer split rim bbs wheels which some fit. My 16v had two slightly buckled wheels so i picked up a set of estorils which had been hand finished to a lovely polished look, ive also got a set of decent le castellets too, i really appreciate the standard classy look of a nice mk2 👍. Regarding the black trims ive recently discovered a video by whiteland restorations, where they had some volvo 240 bumpers painted with something called "Final Systems satin black" and they looked awesome!! something i am considering for my car 👍👍👍. All the best Andrew and i cant wait to see how you improve and preserve your car! 👍👍👍That was a great result too with the wheel arch trim, its what lurks beneath that is the big worry isnt it!!
