Neneh Cherry is a pure example of an INTERNATIONAL Star. Just because something doesn’t take flight here in America, does not mean it isn’t doing well elsewhere. We’ve been programmed to only pay attention to Billboard and how high a certain song or album charts. If it doesn’t reach the top 40 here, it isn’t considered a success. Again, that doesn’t mean the song or album isn’t doing well in places like: Jamaica, Sweden, Italy, Japan, etc. Plus, just because it charts high on Billboard, doesn’t mean it’s a good project. Billboard measures sales (or streams in modern times) it does not weigh critical acclaim. Therefore, Billboard measures commercial success.

Honestly she didn’t make it big in the States because she got pregnant during her “Buffalo Stance” promo. She was pregnant in the video. Back then if you got pregnant at the peak of your career it was suicide. Lauryn had the same fate. It’s was very frowned upon. Unlike now where Cardi B & Summer Walker were actually able to thrive during their pregnancies and album promos. Maybe if times were different then we would of gotten more music from here.

Thank you for this video! Just wanted to add that singer/songwriter Marlon Roudette is Neneh Cherry’s step son. He was in a group called Mattafix and then went solo releasing two albums. He co-wrote his sister’s Mabel UK hit “Finders Keepers,” as well as Ne-Yo’s latest single “What If.” 🙂

I never knew she did so much. I grew up in Brooklyn. We were all about hip hop, r&b, reggae/dancehall. I was a teen when buffalo stance hit the airwaves and we made jokes about it. Our community wasn’t really feeling her like that but to each his own. Good story.
