They should have closed buick. Had they kept ponticac, their lineup would have been great; Chevy - brand that appeals to everyone (workhorse trucks, family suvs, grocery getters and family cars, a couple sportier options, etc) Pontiac - sports cars and other vehicles that appeal to the younger crowd or whoever is into more spirited driving Cadillac - pure luxury and comfort for a premium price GMC - all around utilitarian (mostly workhorse trucks and mid to full sized suvs) Instead they killed most of their sporty market and kept around Buick which is basically just a slightly shittier version of Cadillac
@FreshMootz5 жыл бұрын
Buick has people with more disposable income. Pontiac had people just starting out and having some success. As a business it only made sense. Still, Buick has some of the ugliest and blandest cars/SUVs I have ever seen.
@thecanucklehead30345 жыл бұрын
@@FreshMootz what i dont understand is why theyd offer two luxury brands that are very similar in both consumers and products. theyre effectively splitting their market in half. Why not cut it down to just Cadillac, rebadge some of the more unique buicks as new cady models, then youd have a larger consumer base with more options to offer them. And pontiac (at least for a while) had the fiero, arguable one of the cheapest sports cars ever mass produced. Had they continued making the trans am/firebird, maybe introduced a hot hatch and a couple smaller sports cars to compete with the imports that were blowing up, and maybe even a successor to the fiero, i think they couldve done pretty well.
@coooclmmaann125 жыл бұрын
I have a Buick and can pretty much confirm this. They attempt a cross between luxury and sportiness but are ultimately lacking and just a lesser, restyled Caddilac. They are decent but are basically slightly less for slightly less, might as well just stick with Cadillac.

Absolutely true. Everyone loved the mid engine design, but they put an i4 in it, and that totally killed it. Sales in it sucked, so they finally realized they needed a better engine and they released the Fiero GT. This one had a V6 and it was a fantastic car. However, by the time the GT came out, people had already written off the Fiero as a trash economy car. It ended up never getting popular. Also note* The Pontiac Division, logo, brand, etc. still exist in the GM Headquarters and there are about 3 people (at least) who work at "Pontiac", so it's not quite dead. Only MOSTLY dead. An entrepreneur recently (last year) tried to buy the brand to revive Pontiac but GM declined any amount of money; they're still holding on to the name-sake. I called the Pontiac Division and was greeted with, "Hello, Pontiac General Motors" about a year ago. I asked about the brand and was told it's in limbo-status. I offered to have a digital petition set-up to revive the brand and they insisted I not do that, and that if Pontiac is "revealed" at some certain time in the future, they would rather do it publicly rather than from, well, a civilian such as myself (understandably). Still, harassing them to bring it back is fun.

There would also be some designated cheap areas outside the city where parking for them would be cheap and it would build like a colony there of so many trailer homes. And for commute to city for job they would just use bicycles, bikes which they can store in their trailer or juat use public transportation. Ans they can just mobe to another city whenever they want by just driving there home there. And like all those young people in those trailer colonies will just party good and have fun. Because they don't really have much money to buy houses these days. I really think this idea can come into play and car manufacturers may build something like this

It really bummed me out during the financial crisis that GM decided to keep Buick instead of Pontiac. I honestly felt betrayed because quite a few of my favorite cars were Pontiacs. I've since bought an 02 WS6 Trans Am, 08' G8 GT, and sold my 2008 G6 GXP a few years ago. If I ever get the kind of serious money that it would take to buy a 67 GTO then you bet your ass I'm going to lol. The Corvette has always been my top dream car but I want the GTO just for the sentiment haha.
@MrJrredneck6 жыл бұрын
The big reason they kept Buick was it was selling like crazy in China. I agree with the betrayal because almost all of my cars have been pontiacs. My fist car was a '92 grand am . I also had a '99 grand am gt, '05 grand prix, and my current baby '09 G8 GT. Everyone I talk to thought Pontiacs were good cars but just were not fun enough. I think the main problem is GM seems to make great cars and then put in crap motors with no power or excitement. Personally, I love your dream car of the GTO, but a dream Pontiac of mine would be a '88 Fiero GT with a L32 3800 supercharged swap.
@franktorre19816 жыл бұрын
Pontiac failed when the company brought back the GTO. Unlike the Classic styling the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger got. Pontiac brought over the Holden Monaro and just called it the NEW GTO. The company failed to create a Halo car. Which doomed the brand. While GM, Ford and Dodge are doing fine with their retro muscle car designs. A retro design of the classic 1970 GTO Judge would've without a doubt been a huge seller for Pontiac.
@malcolmsmith3336 жыл бұрын
historically the monaro was more closely related to a chevelle then a GTO so the sucked that one right up. look up the HQ series Monaro.
@franktorre19816 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Smith I agree with you there. It was never going to win over US drivers as a GTO. Especially since a huge fuss was made over the first version not having hood scoops. Pontiac could've been saved by making a new GTO from ground up with a retro style like their domestic competitors did. A halo car really would've kept the brand around.

Most people wouldn't even know the GTO is a sports car. It's kind of plain looking compared to it's competitors. I just wish they didn't kill off the 4th gen Firebird and Camaros, but they did need a body to compete with the new retro looks coming out.

I wish Pontiac would get revived as a performance division.Similar to how Scion was to Toyota. Then we could see the release of a new Firebird and hopefully another Fiero. ALSO I heard Pontiac was working on a prototype Fiero to return to the lineup. There were like 5 or 6 made as prototypes and tested against the same year Corvette. The Fiero killed it in every test. Chevy bitched to GM, and GM pulled the plug saying something along the lines of "The Vette is America's sports car, and we can't have it getting beat by anything else we make." Funny now that the next Vette is mid-engine.

I see what you're after, but I always thought Scion was branded as a hip young person's car. In fact, weren't they trimmed and spec'd lower to make them cheaper as to appeal to this demographic?
@8bit_bryan6 жыл бұрын
My direction with the reference to Scion is simply the position it is to a larger car manufacturer, I'm not intending to reference it's business model to them. As for them failing? Failing is something any business faces. Just because one fails, doesn't mean you can't improve upon that concept. THey did make a huge presence and became a household name through its advertising and media out reach to the younger demographic for several years. Just something to think about. Think more along the lines of if TRD or Shelby made various cars as a brand under their parent company. I mean production lines level cars like scion. Now this would be New Pontiac cars is sold in Chevy dealerships. The Pontiac (Pontiacs, Pontiacs'? Not sure the plural) will have something unique for those looking for something more. Not the Cadillac level, but above Chevy's trim. Definitely style oriented to reflect that customer base interest. Now I can relay what that would be for hours, but think of your own interpenetration what Pontiac would be or have to sell as a good idea for you. Either way, it's an idea how theoretically they could brand the brand back.
