After relistening to alot of older work from Joey Bada$$ recently, I couldn't help but to think, whatever happened to PRO ERA? They seemed to have a TON of hype, and just never lived up to the expectations they set when they first started to burst onto the Hip Hop scene.

They never fell off, they organically went on their own path. Plus, STEEZ’s death effected the collective, similar to what happened to A$AP MOB when Yam$ passed. They were the heart and soul of the movements

@@camiamproducer yeah but damn at that point Rocky was still HOT. So many people forget that Rocky is literally the lost 4th of the Kendrick Cole Drizzy comparisons he was dead center in the talk and you couldn’t even deny him and if I remember correctly Fergs song Shabba was still booming around that time as well. Shit I see it tho Yam$ was a huge part in the momentum and how they should do things

@@gilbanzo4187 That shit never coming out, it's not Joey's fault. It's STEEZ's toxic ass family. They've been trying to shake Joey down over shit they don't have the rights to. There was some drama between Joey & STEEZ's sister a while back which told a lot about the dynamic.

Surprised you didn’t mention the Beast Coast album that came out a few years ago. It got a fair amount of press before it released and they even did a live spot on jimmy fallon. Its a super group with PE the Flatbush zombies and the underachievers. Prolly would support the whole “they fell off” observation, but it was a notable body of work

Bruh you gotta do more research if you wanna call this a “documentary”, You say they fell off but you really don’t know much about any of their projects. You only mention 3 Joey projects and American korruption. After 2012 Joey released rejex, rejex 2. Pro era released the secs tape and all of their members have released a lot of their own projects that have done well. It seems like you aren’t much of a fan of pro era, It’s pretty obvious that you just listened to Joey,s 3 albums that are on mainstream streaming platforms and took a quick glance at the pro era wiki page, then decided to make a video on them without being too informed

I was actually gonna write my own comment until I saw this. You read my mind, at first I thought I was a pretty good video then not much was brought in the terms of PRO ERA and the crew’s individual projects. Plus how we was comparing everything to 1999 showed he didn’t care about anything else until it sounded like it. Mad disrespect in my opinion to not show love to the other crews work. One love.

Well, Capital Steez died. He was the one with the vision that united the whole group. Joey in 2013 had a different style than in 2012, and it didn't fit with the rest of the squad as well. Capital Steez would have been more interesting of an artist had he lived.

CJ Fly's album RUDEBWOY was honestly one of the best hip-hop albums of 2020 in my opinion he has an aggressive delivery and chooses beats that make him shine in a sense. Nick Caution's mixtape was tuff but it didn't stick with me the way RUDEBWOY did, that album is an honorable mention for best pro era releases in my opinion behind 1999, B4DA$$, Amerikkian Corruption, AMBadass and maybe PEEP.

I was behind PE 100%. I still slip in Kirk knights project ‘liwii ‘ in my public playlists. To this day I’m still disappointed with how big Dyemond Lewis could have been 😔 him and Joey had chemistry. I felt like no one stepped up to be the leader. Joey was the face but wasn’t that good of a leader to push the others. PE’s downfall is very similar to ASAP Mob’s

Steez is one of the greatest rappers I have heard in my over 20 years of listening to Rap music He looked to guide the members of the pro era and build a movement almost like Tupac did with Thug Life He's also one of the most talented lyricists I've heard ever he reminds me alot of Earl Sweatshit and I can defs tell he listened to alot of MF Doom I would bet, he's a true Poet that loved to play with words. All in saying that I absolutely love this guys music the reason he took his own life is a mystery mixed into Tragedy not only for his family.......but for us the fans he has alot of music yet to be released as Joey can not do a thing so I have heard big shame Neegus my bruh RIP Steelo 47 forever

I peeped Kirk's, CJ's, Nyck's albums/mixtapes when they came out and that single Dirty Sanchez put out like 2-3 years ago. But never saw anyone talking much about them at all. Even though Nyck's Disguise The Limit is mad quality imo. I don't know if they all need more cohesive advertisement or what, like drop closer together in a ProEra season or something, I dunno. But it's kinda wild how much Pro Era's faded. Hope they pop off more. Good to know they're still getting solid streaming numbers though. ...Hearing T'Nah on a feature track with like Rapsody would've been fire. It has been pretty quiet for a bit, but Joey did drop that Light EP like a year or two ago btw.

Bruh this man obviously wasn’t a real fan of pro era lol. He said the they only had 1 collab project when they’ve had 5. Not to mention Kirk knight and Nyck Cautions collab project Nyck@Knight. And Peep the aprocolypse wasn’t their first. It was the first Seccs Tape. And their only competitor wasn’t only odd future at the. They came up during the “new New York wave” where a lot of solidified ny rappers came up and some fell off like ASAP mob, action Bronson, bodega bamz, suicideboyz, Troy Ave etc. And CJ Fly is arguably amazing, all his single projects are fire. I feel like they haven’t even fallen off, I feel like they have a cult following and they’ll remain underground considering they have their own label and it’s doing well for the underachievers sales wise. Not all of them are as successful as Joey, CJ, Nyck, and Chuck though.

At that time tho, I was closed off from rap and never listened to their rap. I started making music myself less than a year ago and recently started to be consumed into rap in general and finally decided to listen to Capital STEEZ not expecting much and expecting only a hand full of songs. But boy, was I surprised and heavily influenced. Then I listened to 1999 by Joey and he is probably one of the few people I would want to meet. Their stuff is amazing and some of STEEZ’s songs I play on repeat. Man I really wish he wasn’t gone. I’m working hard to make my first mixtape/album will live up to theirs and more.

I felt the label didn't give a damn about pro era and mainly just joey and a very select few members of pro era. So the label put most of the marketing and budget behind joey and let the rest of the group fall to the wayside. Plus the fact that music started to evolve more and pro era got boxed into the classic 90s rap hip hop genre. OG pro era fans like the classic old zchool style, but it doesn't appeal to new listeners that much. So their fanbase doesn't grow but instead it stagnates and slowly decreases because many of the pro era members dont consistently drop music. But idk if they're not dropping music because of label politics or because they just aren't dropping. But I think that's what struck a major blow to pro era, not dropping And being boxed into 90's hip hop. Cuz even Flatbush and underachievers weren't boxed in as 90's rappers, they had their own unique sound. I think the zombies outlasted the others because everything they do comes from in house. No label cuckery and they don't have to rely on any outter entity for beats merch and release dates

As a collective, they missed their window. Cause they could’ve and should’ve been WAAAYYY bigger. I always compare them to OF cause of their collective talent but Odd future split too, yet all of them collectively are more well known than that of Pro Era. Frank is one of the most sought after artist that people feign to hear, Tyler is doing BIG things! Syd & the internet are doing their THING!.. Earl has the underground on lock with the alchemist, Knxwledge and all of them.. Domo doing his thing! Even Hodgy Beats aka Jerry has rebranded himself and is making it musically…. They’re all killing it with names for themselves… on the other hand, If you wasn’t true fan of Pro Era you won’t really know who Dirty Sanchez is or A la sole aka Aaron Rose, or Dyemond Lewis (who left the group), or Dessy Hinds, a lot of people don’t even really know Kirk like that. So they definitely could’ve been bigger.. & STEEZ passing away had a lot to do with it.. RIP King CAPITAL

Dirty Sanchez is still active, super active he creates and drops almost Bi Weekly 47 Merch plus his music and still consistently holding it down for Steez . Cj is bouta drop a lil project , Nyke still doing shows making numbers & Kirk just got a platinum plaque for his producing plus his own music he’s got on the side . Chuck is constantly making beats and dropping projects They all got different paths and things going for themselves at the root of it all it’s still 47

Let's face it, Pro Era and Joey Bad died when Steez died. He was literally carrrying them from the background.

Thanks for covering this, been missing PE lately. PEEP has been on rotation a lot since the 10th anniversary passed. Being a teen in Brooklyn when 1999 / PEEP came out was such a surreal feeling. I think another important part of Joey's career was when XXXTentacion died. They seemed to make a really strong bond within the time that they knew eachother and for Joey to lose someone else that was close to him must have been devastating.

Bro I just miss their Cyphers and the best thing ever came out before each member going solo was the Beast Coast Album in collab with The Underachievers and Flatbush Zombies. Now everyone’s going solo with no collab in sight for a sign of hope. We need this experience once more.

Good video/breakdown. I love Pro Era. You're right that they definitely just had that combination of swag, skills, & style, especially for a group so young. I didn't get into a lot their group stuff, besides Joey's material where they were featured, until the last couple years. But been listening to them heavily since. I obviously knew them because of Joey & have always loved his flow as he's one of my favorite contemporary rappers. They could've been really special as a group. Like you said I think two of the big reasons they fell off as a group was that they really were #1. Just too big in size. It's hard to be very successful over a long period of time with a group that big. Even Wu-Tang during their rise focused on a lot of their solo projects for 4 years (with a lot of features from other members) before they dropped their second group album in 1997. & I think that was the right move. #2. reason was definitely Steez's death. Suffering a loss of someone who had that kind of impact, leadership & skills to a group would be devastating & I just don't see how you'd be able to recover from that fully or how it'd ever be the same. He probably would've been one of the all time greats had he lived even a few years longer. I'm sure there were other reasons but feel like those were big factors that kinda killed their buzz/progress. I'm still a huge fan & will always bump their stuff. Fav. posse cuts besides Suspect (Third Eye Shit) are Last Cypher (Peep The Aprocalypse) & Sorry Bonita (Summer Knights). Those tracks really showcases all their skills. But with that said, hard not to think what could've been.
